The Southeast Fire Centre is asking the public to exercise cau-

tion while conducting any outdoor burning ac-tivities this spring.

As the snow melts, dried grass from last

summer gets uncovered and that material can be highly flammable. Almost all wildfires at this time of the year are caused by people and are therefore prevent-able.

Homeowners and in-dustry personnel are en-

couraged to consult the B.C. FireSmart manual, visit the Wildfire Man-agement Branch web-site: www.bcwildfire.ca - and take the following precautions:

* Ensure that enough people, water and tools are on hand to control

the fire and prevent it from escaping.

* Do not burn dur-ing windy conditions. Weather conditions can change quickly and the wind may carry embers to other combustible material and start new fires.

* Create a fireguard at least one metre around the planned fire site by clearing away twigs, grass, leaves and other combustible material.

* If you are planning a large burn, consider conducting smaller burns around the pe-rimeter beforehand to create a fuel break and help stop the fire from spreading beyond its intended size. Each of these fires should be kept small and must be completely extin-guished before starting a new fire.

* Never leave a fire unattended and make sure that your fire is completely extin-guished and the ashes are cold to the touch be-fore you leave the area.

If you are planning to do any large-scale in-dustrial burning or con-duct a grass burn over 0.2 hectares (Category 3 fires), you must obtain a burn registration num-ber ahead of time by calling 1 888 797-1717.

Venting conditions should always be checked before con-ducting an open burn. If conditions are rated “Poor” or “Fair”, open burning is restricted. The venting index can be found at: http://

www.bcairquality.ca/readings/ventilation-index.html

In British Columbia, the Wildfire Act speci-fies a person’s legal obligations when using fire on or within one ki-lometre of forest land or grassland. If an outdoor burn escapes and causes a wildfire, the person responsible may be held accountable for damag-es and fire suppression costs.

Anyone found in con-travention of an open fire prohibition may be issued a ticket for $345 or, if convicted in court, may be fined up to $100,000 and sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wild-fire, the person may be subject to a penalty of up to $10,000 and be ordered to pay all fire-fighting and associated costs.

The Province thanks the public for its con-tinued help in prevent-ing wildfires. If you see flames or smoke, call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or dial *5555 on your cellphone.

Fire Centre urges spring burn caution

What to expect from this product:• Produces healthy collagen• Dissolves cholesterol deposits• Reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease• Increases blood ow to coronary arteries• Prevents formation of free radicalsHumans do not make Vitamin C like animals do, we need to supplement this essential vitamin to meet our daily needs. Vitamin C and Lysine work together to build collagen, which strengthens and holds together the coronary cells. Inadequate amounts of Vitamin C means poor collagen. Coro-nary cells then fall apart just as bricks do without good mortar. Coronary arteries, closest to the heart, receive the greatest pressure. Without enough Vitamin C the collagen weakens. This sets the stage for heart attack. The work of Dr. Sydney Bush shows that vitamin C + Lysine can help reverse the process.Reg $29.99 Sale $23.99 SAVE $6.00Berry or Plain 300g size

As part of the Wel-coming Communities

project, The Colum-bia Basin Alliance for Literacy and The Cranbrook Public Li-

brary have teamed up to provide a free one hour presentation for newcomers. Gain local knowledge of the Com-munity Garden and find out what resources and experience are needed to grow your own food here. If you are a new comer or have immi-grated to Canada in the last 10 years you will be interested in the in-formation offered by Shannon Duncan of the Food Action Commit-tee as part of the Ex-plore Your Own Back Yard Series at the Li-brary March Thursday 27th at 7 pm.

“So much of garden-ing is rooted in experi-ence and there is such great potential for shar-ing and learning about each other in the gar-den” states Shannon Duncan. She will share gardening tips as well as information about the Community Gar-den.

This presentation will increase the local ca-pacity for growing food by offering a place where immigrants or newcomers can learn more about growing food in our climate while exchanging skills from a local member of the community.

The presentation is

free but registration is required. This project is made possible through funding from the Gov-

ernment of Canada and the Province of British Columbia.

To get involved or

to register call Jenna Madsen at the Cran-brook Public Library at 250-426-4063 or email

[email protected] .

Christine Hoechs-mann, co-owner of The Bedroom Furniture Galleries, and Ashley Furniture Homestore is a strong Cranbrook business leader and represents Ashley Fur-niture Homestore as a Platinum Sponsor for the upcoming Speak Your Mind, The 2014 Kootenay Women’s Show.

Q: Tell me a little about your business and your role in it.

A: The Bedroom Fur-niture Galleries has been around since 1977 and was started by my husband’s parents. My husband and I have been working in the business for over 10 years and are honored to take over the family business. I work in the office doing commercial projects, accounting, buying and

pretty much anything that requires attention at that particular moment!

Q: As a woman, do you have to do anything differently in business than your male counter-parts?

A: I think as woman we instinctively do a lot of things differ-ent than men. Our in-dustry is dominantly male and I have had to grow to be more con-fident and assertive. I

have had to put extra effort in my ability to negotiate which I don’t think comes naturally to women. On the flip side, being a woman in business I feel I am more cautious and pa-tient. My husband and I are great business partners partly because we have the advantage of making decisions together which include a female and male per-spective.

Q: What are some of the challenges you have faced in the region in terms of business and how have you over-come them?

A: Some challenges in the region in terms of business is local government. Our only way to overcome the challenges is to stay in-volved and make sure the community knows business is vital to all our survival. No busi-ness, no tax revenue to fix roads; no business, no jobs; no business, no donations to any fun-draisers. The list goes on. The fastest way to kill our economy is for local government not to embrace current busi-nesses and welcome new businesses in the community.

Q: Is there a person, or an idea that particularly inspires you?

A: Many people in my life bring me inspira-tion; from my children, my husband, my best friends to Coco Chan-nel! One thing I have to work on every day as a business woman and mother is to shed the guilt; make your decisions and move on knowing you are doing the best you can. The minute you let guilt creep in, you diminish all that you were able to do. Find your balance and embrace it!

Re: William Hills March 17, 2014 – Letter.

Hello Mr. Hills – it’s been awhile. Nice to see that you’re still out there holding your elected of-ficials accountable! I ap-preciate the opportunity that your letter provides to clarify some miscon-ceptions. Let me take it from the top…

Total cost for the Firehall Fountain was $38,623 – about 2/3 of that was staff wages. The project began in 2012 using money saved from the funding of the renovations and consoli-dation of our Fire Ser-vices into Firehall No. 2 on 2nd Street South. It is a nice visual addition to the street and is designed in the shape of a Maltese Cross, symbolic to fire fighters everywhere.

The cost for the Eliza-beth Lake Welcome to Cranbrook sign sculp-ture was $49,115, and we have received many positive comments on it. Total cost of the im-provements to date for the day use area, which included paving, land-scaping, picnic area improvements and the year round provision of tourist information was $210,511, which in-cluded $35,000 from the Ministry of Transporta-tion and Infrastructure, and $57,000 from Co-lumbia Basin Trust.

Total cost for asphalt-ing the road into the Spray Irrigation Pump-house building was $143,083. This project was not approved by Mayor or Council.

UBCM is held once a year. It brings together all municipal elected of-ficials from around BC to find solutions to com-mon issues, to lobby for our communities by meeting one-on-one with Provincial Cabinet Ministers, and by sub-mitting and voting on resolutions that go to the Federal and Provincial Governments to make our municipalities better places to live. We limit expenses by staying in cheaper hotels and walk-

ing to the convention location whenever pos-sible.

There are no members of Cranbrook City Coun-cil attending the Federa-tion of Canadian Munic-ipalities Conference in Niagara Falls.

Cranbrook was cho-sen by the Province of BC in 2009 to be part of the Asia Pacific Ini-tiative and to work on building Friendly City relationships with Tai-cang, China and Wonju, South Korea. $59,000 was provided to Cran-brook by Provincial and Federal Grants. To date the city has invested an additional $23,839 from surplus funds. As a result of the initiative a major import export company from China, the Jiangsu Wuyang Group, brought their team of executives to Cranbrook last fall to look at buying lumber. We arranged for them to meet with Tembec, Gal-loway Lumber and Can-for. The College of the Rockies is pursuing rela-tionships with Universi-ties in both countries as a result of this initiative.

The Province of BC is introducing legislation to change Municipal Government elections to 4 year terms based on a majority of municipal politicians voting for it at last falls’ UBCM. One of the reasons to go to 4 year terms, which is pretty standard in all Provinces except BC, is to save money. The average cost to Cran-brook’s citizens for each of the last two Municipal elections was $23,161, not counting referen-dums. Looking ahead the next 12 years there will now be 3 elections at a minimum cost to tax-payers of $69,483. For elections to take place annually as you suggest would cost our taxpayers a minimum of $277,932 for the 12 years. The major concern by mu-nicipal leaders who voted against going to 4 year terms was the time commitment and whether the longer term

would discourage people from running for office. Councillors and May-ors sacrifice time away from family, friendships and businesses to hold municipal elected of-fice (I average about 50 hours most weeks). You really do have to care about your community and public service to be on city councils. I en-courage everyone to run for political office and experience life from the “inside”.

With respect to Ur-ban Deer I absolutely believe municipalities need more options. We currently use education, bylaws, fences, deer re-sistant plants and culls. Municipalities should also be able to try trans-locations (mass translo-cations of mule deer and white-tailed deer have never been tried in Brit-ish Columbia), hazing with dogs (Kimberley was given a one day per-mit to try this last year and considered it prom-ising) and drugs that could render does unable to conceive. Since the Province of BC “own” the deer we can only do what they allow. I would like to see changes to the Wildlife Act to make it easier for municipalities to deal with urban wild-life in general, and ad-ditional financial support from the Province.

As Mayor and Coun-cil we are committed to making our city a better place and have undertak-en a number of initiatives to improve our city for businesses, for youth and seniors, for people with disabilities, for multi-culturalism, for the arts, and for the environment. If you would like details I would encourage you to contact me or one of the Councillors. Come to a Brown Bag Meeting, Coffee with the Mayor, or a Council meeting. Get the facts and get personally involved - consider running in this fall’s municipal election or volunteering for a city committee. You’ll find it’s an interesting jour-ney!

Each Spring Toast-masters holds a series of speaking contests that permit club members to hone their public speak-ing skills. The competi-tors start at the club level and present a speech that meets the criteria of an International Speech which is to inspire or call to action.

The other contest that happens at the same time is the Evaluation contest. Everything in Toastmasters is evalu-ated and that is what makes the program successful. Evaluations are done constructively and the speaker is giv-en points that are well done, a point to grow on or improve and then another point well done. After the club contest the contestants go on to the Area Contest.

Area 36 covers Gold-en, Sparwood, Creston and Cranbrook clubs and most recently there was a contest held in Creston to see who would move forward to the Division C contest in April and then on to the District 21 Contest in May.

Judges were able to se-lect two winners per sec-tion to go on to the Divi-sion C contest and those winners are: David Far-rell and Barb West for the Evaluation Contest. Melanie Holloway and Richard Chlopecki for the International Speech Contest. The Division C contest will be held Saturday, April 12 at the College of the Rockies Lecture Theatre starting at 1 p.m.

Come out and see if you can select the win-ner from clubs repre-senting Kamloops, Ver-non, and other interior clubs as well as the rep-

resentatives from Area 36. The winners of the Division Contest will go on to Kelowna in May

for the District 21 con-test where the winner of the International Speech Contest can win the op-

portunity to go on to the Regional contest and from there on to Kuala Lumpur to compete at

the International confer-ence being held in Ma-laysia in August.

Over the years I have writ-ten a number of articles on the limited value and poten-tial dangers of mammogra-phy. At the risk of restating what I have written in past articles, the recent publi-cation of a massive study involving 90,000 women followed over 25 years by Canadian researchers has motivated me to write yet another article that should make women very uncom-fortable about getting a mammogram. This recent and well crafted study, published this year in The British Medical Journal, found that death rates from breast cancer were the same in women who got mam-mograms and those who did not. Even more trou-bling (and this finding has been reported previously by other researchers) this study showed that one in five so-called "cancers" found with mammography and subsequently treated with chemotherapy, radiation or surgery was in fact not a threat to the woman's health and did not require treat-ment. Said in more blunt

terms, mammograms create more cancer patients than they help find. There is a principle in medicine that states: First, Do No Harm. Mammograms utterly fail in this regard. Despite this study, and others that have shown the same results, mammograms continue to be widely recommended and utilized. Science aside, I understand why: there is an enormous investment of resources, money, momen-tum and wishful thinking pushing mammograms along. The campaign to increase awareness about breast cancer has been very successful and a big part of this process has been to teach women to get regular mammograms. It is hard to change course when there is so much invested in a particular technology, even when the science repeat-edly dashes our hopes. My advice to women; get genetic testing if there is a high risk of breast cancer in your family, eat well, exer-cise, do regular self breast exams, and avoid mam-mography.

An auto show for the entire provinceIt’s that time of year again when car shoppers can check out the hottest trends, latest innovations and some old classics at the 94th annual Vancouver International Auto Show. This year’s show, which runs from March 25 to 30 at the Vancouver Convention Centre West, promises to be a great family-friendly event with some exciting new features, following a record-breaking year for auto sales in Canada in 2013.The show is owned and oper-ated by the New Car Dealers Association of BC, serving as a new model showcase for the Canadian automotive industry and representing more than 30 distinct brands from the world’s leading manufacturers. Canadians purchased a record-setting 1.74 million cars last year: a four per cent increase over 2012 and just the second time in history that the market has ever surpassed 1.7 million units. In British Columbia alone, new car dealers account for more than $10 billion annually in economic activity. This makes it an important industry for entire province where our dealer

members employ, directly and indirectly, more than 34,000 high paying, full-time people in the more than 50 communities they serve. The show may be at the coast and therefore a little too long a drive for many readers but I would encourage you to cast your eye over show media coverage and use that material for information and ideas. Then go to visit some of our members’ dealerships where they operate an ‘auto show’ for 52 weeks a year! For those of you who can attend be sure to participate in the Green Ride and Drive, which puts you at wheel of the latest eco-friendly vehicles. Another feature is the Exotics, which is

a selection of truly exhilarating automobiles – you can dream!Visitors at this year’s show will also get to ex-perience a bit of automotive history at Hagerty Classic Alley, featuring beautiful cars from the 1950s and 1960s, including a special salute to the Ford Mustang and its 50th anniversary celebration. Two classic cars will also be auctioned off, with

100 per cent of the funds going towards two very de-serving causes. The first is a 1966 Plymouth Satellite, funds from which will go towards the MS Society of Canada. The second is a 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe, profits from which will be donated to the New Car Dealers Foundation of BC.For more information on the show visit: vancouverinternationalautoshow.com

One for all in the truck revolution

A12 www.kootenayadvertiser.com/www.drivewaycanada.ca Monday, March 24, 2014 Kootenay News Advertiser

by Ian Harwood

Years ago, we would see a pickup truck at an Auto Show (a rare find) and think this would be perfect on the farm; it has a bench seat that would fit all three of us!

My how things have changed, stepping into a pick-up today is like stepping into a luxury home with even more technology. Trucks are now outselling cars, so manufactur-ers must keep looking for in-novative designs to entice the consumer into selecting their vehicle over the competition. There are many trucks on the road today but let’s look at the three domestic brands, all of which will be represented at the Vancouver International Auto Show.

Ram introduced the EcoDies-el V6 engine in its 2014 1500 model and the consumer frenzy was on. A ½ ton pickup with 420 lb ft of torque and 4182kg (9200lbs) max towing capabilities, great! Better fuel economy, where do I sign.

Ford announces the 2015 F150 with an aluminum body and a completely new design, this had Ford customers hold-ing off on their new purchase

until this comes out, which I do not think was Ford’s intention.

GM changes not only the design of their truck but much of their drivetrain. So much so, that it was named North Amer-ican Truck of the year.

Consumers are demanding these changes, they want bet-

ter fuel economy but still are able to tow just as much. They want more comfort but still have a practical interior. They want comfortable suspension but still perform off-road if necessary.

Manufacturers have to con-sider all this when designing

a new truck. They set up focus groups all around the country asking how they can improve and what features consumers want in a truck.

So what’s driving sales, what do pickups have over cars and why are they so popular? Ver-satility, you can transport large items, haul your favorite ‘toy’, take your family in comfort to the cabin, get out and play in

the mud. I am not saying you can’t do this in a car but with a truck there are no limita-tions and that’s what intrigues people into this type of vehicle.

You can do so much more with a truck, the possibilities are endless. The truck is just the beginning, the customiza-tion then begins. Research shows that on average a truck owner spends between $5,000

and $7,000 in aftermarket ac-cessories within the first six months of ownership. Truck owners want to personalize their vehicles for practical rea-sons and some artistic reasons, but rest assured, if you can dream it there is somebody out there building it.

Ten years ago, I would have said things are slowing down and there might be a change

coming, but it didn’t happen and things picked up and it keeps picking up. I now think it will continue and in another ten years, we will see even more choices, enabling us to take the time to enjoy life on and off road.

Ford forges ahead on all fronts

By Zack Spencer

The Vancouver Interna-tional Auto Show gets un-derway next week. Today, the Driveway team looks at the offerings for 2014 from the Big Three domes-tic manufacturers in papr and online at driveway-canada.ca

Ford has been on a roll here in Canada; finishing out 2013 as the top selling brand for the fourth consecutive year.

There are some very big products coming from Ford over the coming year that will make a big impact on its sales and image, and you will get a peek at some of them at the Vancouver International Auto Show.

The first is the biggest intro-duction of any automaker this year, the all-new 2015 Ford F-150 full-size pickup truck. The F-150 isn’t just the best selling truck in Canada for almost 50 years; it is the over-all sales champ, selling more than any other nameplate. Period.

Ford isn’t merely introduc-ing an updated model. No, they went to town, develop-ing a entirely new manufac-turing process that will revo-lutionize the full-size truck space.

The body of the next F-150 is built of an aluminum al-loy material that Ford claims is 318kg lighter but stronger than the outgoing model. In

addition, the frame is made of thinner, lighter and stronger high-tensile steel that com-bined with the body, produces the weight savings. This is an industry first, and a revolu-tionary approach to building trucks. In addition to a lighter body, the engineers have de-veloped two new engines to compliment the existing 3.5L EcoBoost turbocharged V6 model and 5.0L normally as-pirated V8 engine. The first is a new 3.5L V6 engine, replac-ing the outgoing 3.7L model base engine.

With a lighter truck, a small-er engine can do the work. A smaller 2.7L turbocharged EcoBoost V6 is also going to be introduced with an auto start-stop function that switches off the engine when the truck is sitting still. Official fuel economy ratings have not been released but Ford executives tell me they hope to have best in class gasoline fuel economy.

Other enhancements to the F-150 include a new steplad-der that integrates into the tailgate. Ford was the first to have this feature but it has been improved for 2015. The rear tailgate also has a soft-open feature that prevents the tailgate from slamming down, plus a light switch near the back of the truck to elimi-nate the bed with new LED lights.

The second vehicle that will have a big impact of Ford, but more of an image car, is the all-new 2015 Mustang. Inter-estingly, about 25 percent of all Mustangs are sold here in British Columbia, so this is a big deal for us.

The 2015 Mustang is now going to be sold around the world and developed as part of the “One Ford” approach

to making cars they can share in every market. This means the Mustang will be sold, for the first time, with right hand drive for countries like the UK, Australia and Japan.

The stance of the new Mus-tang is lower, wider and more muscular, with the wheels pushed out to provide bet-ter stability. The fastback has a steeper rake and a bigger trapezoidal grille has en-hanced the shark nose de-sign. Initially the Mustang will be sold as a coupe and con-vertible with the base and GT trim, the higher performance models will come later.

Inside is another clean-sheet design, featuring real aluminum switches and dials, with two large gauges behind the steering wheel. The inte-rior looks more upscale than any Mustang before.

Under the hood the GT trim continues with the 5.0L V8 with improved valves and cylinders helping to pump out over 420hp. The base 3.7L V6 is also carried over but now with 300hp. The big news is

the introduction of a 2.3L tur-bocharged EcoBoost 4-cylin-der with an estimated 300hp and 300 lb.-ft. of torque.

For years, the criticism has been the lack of indepen-dent rear suspension in the Mustang but this is no longer the case. A fully independent rear suspension will help get all the power down to the ground from all three engines plus provide improved han-dling. Ford is hoping with this new platform and available engines, this new model will provide as many thrills as any German sports model and for less money. Pricing has not been finalized but expect it to be in line with existing 2014 Mustang pricing.

Ford is doing well here in Canada and with all-new products; it will have a good chance of staying number one.

Confessions of a CurberMy next vehicle came from a used car wholesaler*. There was nothing wrong with it, but he couldn’t fi nd a dealer who wanted it. I gladly took it off his hands. How hip was I? I had a new source of newer vehicles that would come right to me. “Two-year-old car for sale. No previous accident history reported, only 35,000km on it. Call with offer.”Shortly after, I got a call from a young man. His car had just broken down, and he needed a new one fast. He agreed to meet me at the local construction site where he worked. He was just fi nishing up his lunch when I arrived. He was wearing his construction uniform and I immediately noticed his tired eyes.I felt bad for the poor fellow, and I was glad that I was selling him a reliable vehicle. He didn’t need another headache on top of everything. I even knocked $500 off the price I wanted. It was a smooth transaction. The guy looked happy and thanked me immensely for all the help. I beamed back at him.Around 5:00 a.m. the next morning, I got a call. It was the construction worker, yelling so loudly that I could barely understand him. “THEY TOOK IT AWAY,” he said over and over again. “REPOSSESSED!”I hung up on him and tried to make sense of the situation. Why would the car be taken away in the middle of the night? Who’s “they”?Liens. Of course. The car had a lien on it. That’s why it wouldn’t sell on a lot. The bank must have seized it due to an unpaid balance. As before, I panicked. I didn’t want to get involved in this right now. Sure, I sold him the car, but how was I supposed to know it had

a lien on it? I realized the wholesaler* had scammed me! If that fellow had asked for a CarProof history report or even a provincial lien search, I’d be the one screaming.Over the next several hours, I kept letting my phone go to voicemail – I couldn’t bear speaking to the young man. I knew I had to switch phones again.I felt a bit ashamed. But I needed to be selfi sh about this. At this point, the best thing for me was cash. And lots of it.

*Wholesaler – Vehicle sellers may call themselves auto brokers or wholesalers to sound legitimate and cheaper. But if they’re selling to private buyers, they must be licensed as a dealer. Like any curber - an individual posing as a private seller but selling vehicles as a business – wholesalers and

brokers offer none of the protection the law provides for purchases from a Vehicle Sales Authority licensed dealer. Walt learned

that lesson, but his buyer paid the price.

“They took it away,” he said over and over again. “REPOSSESSED!”

Home Improvementand Renovations

Adding an island to your kitchen is an exciting project. However, it has to be well de signed in order to meet all your requirements, whether you purchased it readymade in a big box store, assembled it ac cording to a plan, or had it custommade.

PositioningUnless you’re lucky

enough to have a very large kitchen, an island is really only appropriate for an open area. For the kitchen to be functional, you should plan for 107 cm of clearance between the island and the cabinets in order to be able to circulate

freely and be able to easily open the fridge and stove doors. If space is limited, another op tion is to plan the island as an extension of the cabinets. Designers would call this a peninsula.

DimensionsA kitchen island has to

be sufficiently large to

fulfill its main purpose, which is to ex tend the available work surface for food preparation. The minimum dimensions recommen ded by kitchen designers are 60 x 90 cm. The ideal height should be the same as that of a standard work surface, i.e. 90 cm. If you’re

planning on using the island as an eating area, the height of any stools should be at least 30 cm lower than the worktop.

ComponentsLastly, it is impor

tant to determine if you want the island to

include components that require the services of a plumber or an electrician to install, such as sink, dishwasher, cooktop and exhaust fan, wine cellar, or builtin microwave oven. Now is also the time to think

about maxi mizing the po tential of this new work zone with the addition of sto rage mo dules, in clu ding drawers, ca binets, and sliding shelves.

Three tips to remember when designing your kitchen island

A well-designed kitchen island can make your life a whole lot easier.

The BC Government is proposing to offl oad the province’s world-class recycling programs, run by local municipalities, to an association led by big multi-national corporations. The idea is that we’ll get a better, more effi cient program that costs taxpayers less.

Unfortunately, what we’ll really end up with is anyone’s guess.

The association isn’t guaranteeing that we’ll get a better program, or even one as good as the current Blue Box program already in place. Since the association is led by big businesses outside of BC, many of whom are not even headquartered in Cana-da, one could presume that profi ts will come before

environmental stewardship. They usually do. They also won’t guarantee that there won’t be any job cuts here in BC.

And how is this supposed to make things better for BC?

Currently, BC homeowners only pay, on average, $35 a year for curbside recycling. Under the proposed regime, you’ll pay more. Every time you bring home a pizza, buy toilet paper,

or pretty much anything else that comes in a package, businesses will be passing their increased costs on to you.

How much more? Well, nobody’s saying.

Here’s the only thing anyone does know: we already have a Blue Box program that works, is effi cient, managed locally and puts the BC environment fi rst. So why is the BC government fl ipping a coin, bringing in a questionable recycling program that some of our local elected offi cials are already calling a “scam?”

It’s time to contact Premier Clark and ask her.

What’s going on here?

Email Christy Clark at [email protected] or call 250-387-1715. For more info, visit RethinkItBC.ca. #RethinkItBC.

This Message is brought to you by:

Heads: you get a worse recycling program.
