Summit Lakes oadfest Is BackSchool summer holidays may be winding down, but

there is at least one more amily oriented activity to placein the calendar beore they are completely over: oadest2014! Te ree event at Summit Lake Provincial Park justsouth o Nakusp, will be held on uesday, August 26 be-tween 4 and 7 pm and on Wednesday, August 27 between10 am and 1 pm.

oadest is an opportunity or the public to get up-close

and very personal with the western toads, especially thetiny toadlets, o Summit Lake. Attendees can search or,collect, and saely transport the toadlets across the high-way. Te event is to both help the western toad populationat Summit Lake, and to raise awareness about their nat-ural history, habitat needs, and the challenges that theyace. Every year, or example, tens o thousands o toad-lets, each not more than the size o a dime, get squashedby vehicles as they attempt their rst migration rom theshoreline o Summit Lake, across Highway 6, to uplandhabitat.

oadest is coordinated each year by the Fish and Wild-lie Compensation Program (FWCP), with support romBC Parks, the Ministry o Forests, Lands and Natural Re-source Operations, Columbia Basin rust, and the Min-istry o ransportation and Inrastructure. While theyare still relatively strong in numbers at Summit Lake, theirdistribution is shrinking and the centre o the worlds dis-tribution has shifed rom the USA to BC, says revorOussoren, program manager or the FWCP in the Colum-bia region, a partnership between BC Hydro, the Provinceo BC, First Nations and public stakeholders. Tey arean indicator o ecological health and an important parto complex ood web, so its extremely important that welook afer them.

Te event, now in its fh year, provides an excellentopportunity to talk to biologists, and get hands-on experi-ence at helping an amphibian in need. Western toads arelisted ederally as a species o concern and are blue-listed(vulnerable) in the province. In addition to helping toad-lets saely across the highway, there will be other activ-

ities to see and do, including liveaquatic insects, amphibians, andreptiles on display, as well as inor-mation on invasive plants, bearsand other wild animals living inthe region.

Te very dry, warm weatherwe experienced in July and earlyAugust seems to have resulted inthe migration being one to two

weeks earlier than usual, saysevent organizer Angus Glass. So we may not be hitting itspeak, but still intend to safelycarry as many toadlets acrossthe road as possible. Te publicare reminded not to collect ortransport any toadlets across thehighway outside of this organizedevent.

    Camping spaces at Summit

Lake Provincial Park cannot bereserved. o learn more about BCParks, visit www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks

Te event is ree and containers or carrying thetoadlets across the road will be provided. Park-ing is limited and carpooling is encouraged. Formore inormation about oadest call 250-354-6333.

Benet Concert With Ash & BloomAt Finleys Bar And Grill

Te musical duo Ash & Bloom (Matt McKenna andJames Bloemendal) will be performing in a benet concertfor the Nelson & District Hospice Society at Finleys Bar& Grill, Nelson, Tursday, August 28. Its a family-friend-ly event, with burgers and beer (or some other beverage)served at 6 pm, music commencing at 7 pm.

Ash & Bloom are easier to describe than to classify. Temusic is subtle acoustic, maybe a little reminiscent ofSimon and Garfunkel, but with an Indy edge. Te lyricsare smart and socially aware; they cut deep, but these guyshave a sense of humour and theyre interactive.

ickets are available at Eddy Music, the Sacred Ride, andat the door. Adults tickets are $25, children under 12 are$10. Children must be accompanied by a parent. Comeout, support Hospice, eat a burger, and celebrate the lastweek of summer!

Play-Clean-GoClose your eyes and picture this; its the rst hot day of the

year, the sun is shining, birds are chirping, and everythingaround is lush, green, and pristine. Te lakes and rivers seemo sparkle and dance under the suns warm rays. Youre head-ng out to spend this Kootenay summer day

with friends kayaking and mountain biking, aking advantage of all this incredible region

has to offer. While we are extremely for-unate to live in an area with such amazing

outdoor facilities, it is important to remem-ber the impact we have on the environmentaround us, especially when it comes to thepread of invasive species.

Whether youre into hiking, mountain bik-ng, kayaking, or an array of other outdoor

activities, the Kootenay region is the placeor you. However what should we be keep-ng in mind in terms of our impact on the

environment around us? When it comes tohe prevention of the spread of invasive spe-

cies, there are many things we can do to helphile enjoying the outdoors. Play-Clean-Go,an initiative dedicated to help curb the spread of invasives, tates, Invasive species have many pathways of spread. Fornstance, weed seeds move easily in soil so, muddy boots or

vehicles can move weed seeds. Some weed seeds have specialooks to help them hitch a ride. Tus, weed seeds can spread

on our shoes, socks, clothing, and pets.

However, the transportation of pesky weeds through soils just one aspect of our trouble with invasive species. Te

Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee (CKIPC), hasdiscovered many cases where water-born invasives havehitched rides

on vessels such as boats, kayaks, and otherwater equipment that has then been reintroduced into ourlakes and rivers, thus causing damage. By learning how toinspect and clean our equipment and belongings, we can

    begin to reduce the chance of inadvertent-ly spreading something that could harmthe pristine outdoor environment we socherish. Here are a few tips to keep inmind this summer;

During campre season use only locaor certied rewood; if you are travellinmake sure all the wood you bring is usedbefore returning home

While hiking, walking, or biking makesure to stay on designated trails designedfor this purpose

Leave clean! Before returning homemake sure to check your belongings anremove any dirt, plants, or bugs to preven

an invasive species from tagging along! Although summer is an amazing time of year in ou

Kootenay region, it is important to remember the impactsour outdoor activities have on the spread of invasive spe-cies. Tis is an issue that affects everyone, and in order tomaintain our incredible surroundings it is up to us to be-come informed, attentive, and accountable in preventinthe spread of invasive species. You can help stop the spreadof invasive plants! For information please go to www.ckipc.ca or www.playcleango.org
