3.1.1.1 Framework-level Prerequisites
FFI Components
If the application uses any FFI components, you must ensure that the following prerequisites are met
and the necessary modifications incorporated before starting the 7.x migration process. The changes
if any are necessitated due to the following reasons:

3. Upgrade Process Kony Upgrade Hub GuideVersion1.0
a. Changes in the underlying OEM's build systems such as Gradle for Android, new XCode
versions, and so on.
b. Changes made by Kony as part of the overall product enhancements, improvements, and
performance optimizations.
This section outlines the checks that you need to make prior to migrating your application to a 7.x
version. The section is organized by platform-wise.
Android
l Convert the library projects to Gradle projects, and generate the .aar file, and use it in the FFI
definition. Refer to the Steps to create an .aar file section for more information.
l FFI components must not contain konywidgets.jar, android.jar, and support-
v4.jar in the Libs folder.
l FFI components must not contain armeabi. So files and should start packing armeabi-v7.
l FFI components must require to be compatible with armeabi-v7 architecture. You must ensure
that the FFI components are compatible with the new arm architecture.
iOS
l All FFI components consumed by the application must be compatible with XCode 8, which is the
mandatory XCode version from Kony 7.x version onwards.
l Memory management of the FFI Components hasbeen changed. So, you may have to make
the changes to the scope of the variable that has been used for FFI objects in your JS code.
In the pre-7.x versions, when an FFI object is created, the corresponding native object used to be
created and used to be active the entire lifetime of the application. This would cause memory issues,
especially in case the object consumes memory such as an object containing image rawbytes.

-
3. Upgrade Process Kony Upgrade Hub GuideVersion1.0
To avoid this problem, in 7.x versions, it has been implemented in such a way that the native object
would be active as long as the FFI object (js object) is active. This enables you to have more control on
the scope of the native object. If you want the scope of the native object to be local to a function, then
you can declare the FFI object as a local variable. For example, in the following function, we have
declared the ffiObj as local scope, hence the memory for the native object would be released once the
function is executed.
function testfun() {
var ffiObj = new sample.ffi.SampleFFIClass();
ffiObj.method1();|
}
In the following code, the ffiObj has a global scope and hence the native object would also global
scope.
function testfun() {
ffiObj = new sample.ffi.SampleFFIClass();
ffiObj.method1();
}
If you want to release the memory for a native object explicitly, you can assign null to the JS FFI object.
For example, ffiObj = null;
In the cases where the native object is used as a delegate, it can be invoked at any time. So, you must
ensure that the native object is active by the time the delegate is invoked by making the FFI object as
global or by managing the scope appropriately.
l FFI components and other libraries used should be compatible with 64-bit architecture. Using
32-bit versions will lead to run-time crashes.

3. Upgrade Process Kony Upgrade Hub GuideVersion1.0
Build-specific Prerequisites
Due to several changes made in the underlying OEM build processes and tool chains used, numerous
restrictions are imposed at build time, on what can be included within the application. This section
outlines some of the most commonly observed changes and how these should be addressed prior to
migrating to 7.x
Android
The most significant change in Android is the migration to a new build mechanism with Gradle. The
Gradle imposes several restrictions or checks that require you to change the following:
l PNG-based image files should be only PNG format files. It it observed that many time users
reated a .gif and saved it as a PNG file. Previous Android build tools were lenient on this but the
Gradle flags this. Hence all PNG files must only be of PNG format.
l The 9-patch drawable images must include 9-patch regions. The build fails if Gradle detects
discrepancy in this. Refer to the Converting an image to 9-patch image using Android tool on
how to convert an image to a 9-patch image.
l In Visualizer 7.3 onwards, there is support to provide Gradle entries from Visualizer as shown in
. The entries need to be provided from Project Settings->Native->Android. Refer to the relevant
screenshot.
l If the application uses androidprecompiletask or postcompiletask (files would be present in
/ folder) for Gradle-related entries in versions prior to 7.3,
remove those entries and add the entries in Project Settings.
l Gradle needs Android plugin, which gets downloaded when run for the first time. In this case, it
automatically downloads Gradle Android plugin from the jcenter repository
(http://jcenter.bintray.com/com/android/tools/build/gradle/)to your system so you must set
necessary proxy for the command line option of Gradle to work.
iOS
l XCode 8.0 and 64-bit are mandatory for building an application.

3. Upgrade Process Kony Upgrade Hub GuideVersion1.0
3.1.1.2 Upgrade Guidelines
l If the application is using a combination of flex and box layouts within the same form, this must
be changed. This combination is strictly not supported in 7.x versions. You must ensure that flex
forms have only flex constructs and box forms have only box constructs. From tooling this
combination was never allowed, but if your app is dynamically adding box layouts into flex or
vice versa, then these would cause runtime issues and potential crashes. It is recommended
that you change such instances, if any.
l Raw bytes APIs have been unified. If the app is using rawbytes to store or pass rawbytes
directly into the local/data storage APIs, then you must change the code. It is now mandatory
that you actually convert the rawbytes to base64 (using kony.convertToBase64 api) and vice
versa using (kony.convertToRawBytes).
l The iOS splash screen now supports different screen resolutions. It is mandatory that the
developer provides for all resolutions if he is using splash screen as a part of his application even
if they were not given in the previous version of the app.
l Legacy Studio generates functions when actions are defined using the action editor. The name
of the function is not an exposed API. If applications have taken a dependence on these names,
then you must ensure that you avoid it as these names will be different post the upgrade. This
will result in the app not being launched or functions going missing.
l If the application is using a segment/scroll container within the header/footer templates, then
this combination is no longer supported in 7.x versions. Post the upgrade, you must change the
form to Flex form, along with other widgets in it to Flex and use a flex container with
segment/flex scroll and position using the positional parameters of the flex.
l SPA and Desktopweb have the validation of duplicate widget IDs even during run time. Errors
are thrown on the console if the application is using duplicate widget IDs.
l Due to security reasons, html rendering support has been removed for the Label widget. For
example, label.text = is not supported.
© 2017 by Kony, Inc. All rights reserved 30 of 92
-
3. Upgrade Process Kony Upgrade Hub GuideVersion1.0
l Post 7.x for SPA and Desktopweb, Jetty server has been discontinued and node js server has
been used instead. To test the SPA/Desktopweb application locally, you need to enable CORS
on the MobileFabric instance where the services are hosted.
l The servicedef.xml contains a list of services used in MobileFabric app. The services in the file
can be edited and renamed. Manual edit/ accidental changes leads to duplication of service IDs
which is not recommended. The servicedef.xml must not contain duplicate service ID’s.
l There are few composite services which internally call integration/object services. In few cases,
the servicedef.xml file may not contain the integration/object service which is being called by the
composite service.
l Many kinds of connectors/services can be defined in the servicedef.xml file. Java is one of the
service for which you need to mention the class for execution. You must upload a jar in the
Server which contains the required class defined in servicedef.xml.
In few cases, wrong jar files are uploaded to server or the Jar does not contain the class defined
in servicedef.xml which results in error.
l ControllerDef.xml file contains all the connectors like JSON/JAVA/XML and the classes which
must be invoked when you use any one of the service. These are Kony's default classes. But
replacing those classes with their custom classes may lead to issues.
l There is a default class for MWServlet which must be used while using middleware/Kony
Fabric. But replacing that class with their own class may lead to many problems during upgrade.
3.1.2 Upgrade Steps
This section outlines the upgrade steps to be performed for upgrading the client application, assuming
the prerequisites have been followed and the app is now in Kony Studio 6.5.x version, and is fully

l syncconfig.xml: The syncconfig.xml file contains sync definition (in case Sync is used).
3. Create the following folders in/ and place the following file in the appropriate locations:
l dsl - The dsl folder contains one .properties file and .dsl files. The dsl folder is only for
scraper services.
The name of the properties file should match the app name.
l files - The files folder contains .properties for SAP JCo/Siebel.
l lib - The lib folder contains the dependent jars required by an app
l wsdl - The wsdl folder contains the following additional files for SOAP services.
l mapping.json - contains mapping file for wsdl source to operation names using that wsdl
source (URL/file).
l // The following is a sample entry in the mapping file in JSON format.
{
"partner.wsdl": [
"convertLead",
"create" ],
"http://wsf.cdyne.com/WeatherWS/Weather.asmx?wsdl": [
"GetCityForecastByZIP",
"GetCityWeatherByZIPtest"

Important: A Kony Fabric application consists of services, and each service contains one or
more operations. But in case of pre-7.x, an app contains only service names. So, in case of
an Kony Fabric app that is created from pre-7.x (by following the earler steps), all the
service names would become operation names. The service names are auto-generated. If
you would like to know the old service name and how it is mapped to the new service
name/operation name, you can refer the _
MWMappings.properties file.
The Import services into Kony Fabric step modifies the JS modules to use the new service
names.
Also, in case you are invoking any services from pre/post processors or Java services, you must
pass the new Service ID wherever you are passing an app ID.

3.1.2.7 Saving the Client Application Post-Import
Ensure that the application is checked in to your version control system. You do not need to re-import
the app again. Once the upgrade is done, you do not need to re-upgrade.
3.1.3 Upgrade Legacy Platforms
3.1.3.1 Solution for Thinclient
From 7.0 onwards, Thinclient support has been revoked and you should use SPA.
In previous versions, Kony supported a server-side mobile web platform. This has been unified under
SPA (Single Page Architecture) for better feature richness, performance, and html 5 support. While
moving to this model, any user, who possesses a server-side mobile web must design the forms for
SPA and build the application for a different SPA-supported browser.

3. Upgrade Process Kony Upgrade Hub GuideVersion1.0
Users do not need to redesign the entire application but instead use the native platform mobile/tablet
design and build the app for SPA. All features of native platforms except native device features are
supported in SPA. Over time, browser support has also evolved in Kony's framework. The following
link provides the list of supported browsers:
http://docs.kony.com/konylibrary/general/konyplatform_supported_devices_os_
browsers/Default.htm#HTML5_SPA.htm%3FTocPath%3D_____8
3.1.3.2 Solution for BlackBerry Native Platforms
From 7.0 onwards, support for native BlackBerry or BlackBerry 10 is not available. The following are
the two options for native BlackBerry 10:
l Build the application for BlackBerry 10 hybrid platform.
l Convert APK to BAR.
* The conversion of APK to BAR is based on native BlackBerry 10 support.
Refer to the http://community.kony.com/developer/forum/apk-bar-conversion-and-installation-
process-along-faqs-bb10-and-apk-file for the steps on converting an APK file to BAR.

3.2.3 Post-installation Steps
1. If you are using custom servlets, filters, or listeners: As 7.x does not support custom servlets
or filters (for example, the classes that extend HttpServlet or implement ServletContextListener
or Filter), you need to modify them. Refer How to Use Custom Servlets, Filters, and Listeners to
make the changes and create the jar file.
Important: The custom servlets, filters, or listeners must be complied against the latest
compatible middleware-system.jar file , which can be downloaded using the Download
option from Admin Console.
2. Create the MobileFabric application from Visualizer Enterprise by following the MADP Upgrade
document. The created MobileFabric application is displayed in the MobileFabric console, as
follows:

The service names of your pre-7.x application would become operation names in the
MobileFabric application. Your existing services are grouped based on their service type and
the base URL and given an auto-generated service name. If you want to see how your existing
services are grouped, you can see them in MobileFabric Console or you can refer File
_MWMappings.properties in the Visualizer workspace.
3. Ensure that your client application is linked to the MobileFabric app.
If your client application is linked to MobileFabric app properly, you would see the following UI in
the Visualizer when you click the Project Explorer->MobileFabric->Use existing, where it
shows the UNASSOCITATE against the MobileFabric app to which you have linked your client
app.
