A lot has changed on Lower Duval Street in

the past two decades, but Irish Kev-in’s Bar, long a favorite of both locals and tourists, just keeps getting better.

In fact this venerable watering hole, located at 211 Duval St., has built steadily on its reputation as the home of some of the greatest live en-tertainment in town, and fantastic – yet affordable – adult libations.

Now coming up on its 21st anni-versary in July, management at the bar has turned its attention to updat-ing and improving upon its reputa-tion as a great place for a fun lunch or evening meal.

Irish Kevin’s has always had bar munchies of some kind. For a while, eats were created in a Catered Affairs food truck parked out back. Years lat-er, food was provided by the kitchen at the Lazy Gecko bar, next door.

Since the opening of their new kitchen, however, everything is made fresh, in-house, using the finest ingre-dients available.

Among the locals’ favorite starters at Irish Kevin’s are the Fried Pickles, a generous portion of thin-sliced dill pickles, lightly battered, and golden fried, served with a zesty ranch dip-ping sauce.

Chicktatoes, invented by a local friend of the bar’s, are exclusive to Irish Kevin’s. They’re basically potato balls with chicken in the middle, the perfect bar food on a late night out, and great for lunch, too!

And what lunch or late night out would be complete without Chick-en Wings? Here they’re golden-fried, and served either “buck naked,” or tossed in the diner’s choice of barbe-cue, Buffalo, or garlic Parmesan sauc-es, and served with celery and either blue cheese, or ranch dipping sauces.

Looking for something rich, hot and filling on a cool evening? You can’t go wrong with a Bread Bowl; these large, fresh-baked edible rolls are filled to the brim with the eatery’s soup of the day.

Fans of local seafood will think they’ve died and gone to Dublin when presented with the Island Blackened Shrimp Wrap, featuring zesty blackened shrimp in a flour tortilla wrap, with mixed greens and a Key lime mango salsa.

On the sandwich side, don’t miss the Reuben, Irish Kevin’s most popu-lar sammy, bursting at the seams with choice house-made corned beef, Swiss cheese, tangy sauerkraut, and thousand island dressing, served on toasted rye.

Fancy a burger? Try the Irish Burg-er, topped with coleslaw, bacon, and cheddar cheese, and cooked to your exact specification.

And for the hearty ap-petite, order up the delec-table Fish N’ Chips, with choice locally sourced and fresh grouper, breaded in a house blend of panko and Parmesan cheese, fried to a golden brown, and served with coleslaw, tartar sauce, and malt vinegar.

Of course no visit to Irish Kevin’s would be complete without sampling a scrump-tious slice of Kermit’s Key Lime Pie, supplied fresh to the bar by the island’s most famous purveyor of this classic dessert staple.

Any way you slice it, there’s only one choice for great food in the 200 block of Duval Street, from lunch-time right up to 11 p.m. Follow the rainbow, to the pot of gold at Irish Kevin’s!

Irish Kevin’s Bar is open from 10 a.m. to 3:30 a.m. daily, with food service from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Private parties and recep-tions can be accommodat-ed in their upstairs loft.

I’ve always loved the charming old stone building at the southwest cor-

ner of Duval and Olivia streets.Fortunately for me it’s always been

a true “public house” of some sort, over the past quarter-century, en-abling me to waste a little time there, from time to time.

I have to say though, that its cur-rent incarnation as the Old Town Tavern & Beer Garden, 900 Duval St., is most promising.

From its unexampled and satis-fying menu to the selection of craft beer, wines and liquors, owner Nick Dent is working with “good bones,” as they say.

On my visit, I declined the offer of one of the eatery’s vast selection of craft lagers, ales, IPAs, wheat beers, etc, which was just as well, as it would have taken me forever to choose! I opted instead to get straight to the food.

After consulting with Nick we de-cided that I’d sample the vegan Vege-table Banh Mi sandwich, a specialty of the house served with a heaping mound of fries.

I have to admit that at first blush the idea of a vegetarian Banh Mi – the Vietnamese equivalent to a Cuban Mix – seemed counter-intui-

tive to me, meat-wise. After the first bite, however, I began to see where Australian-born Dent was coming from. The key, of course is Execu-

tive Chef Andy Collins’ use of from-scratch mushroom pate, alongside the braised Napa cabbage, cilantro daikon, cucumber, pickled carrots, ja-

lapeno, vegan mayonnaise and a gin-ger miso sauce. Slathered over a fresh baguette, it was deelish! (Carnivores should be aware that a fully-loaded, meaty sammy of the same name is also available.)

Nick’s personal fave is the Blackened Cauliflower Wrap, with black bean hummus, cabbage, sprouts, tomato, red pepper, and a citrus vinaigrette, though he’s also fond of the Lamb Belly Roll, with its spiced pikliz (Haitian slaw), to-mato, and smoked paprika mayo.

With its appealing blend of clas-sics and nouvelle fare the full menu pays adroit culinary homage mainly to Australia and the British Isles, and is available nightly until 1 a.m. Break-fast, including Scotch Eggs, Hash, and a Hangover Burger, is served from 9 a.m. to noon, seven days.

Dent also offers two Happy Hours daily, from 4 to 7 p.m. and again from 11 to 1 a.m., with half-off shared plates, flatbreads, well liquor and wine, as well as 25 percent off all beer.

And smoking is permitted outside, on the pet-friendly patio.
