1. Introduction

This Fujitsu Compute and Storage Platform Select for Microsoft® Private Cloud reference

architecture guide uses the following:

Fujitsu Compute node PRIMERGY RX300 S8 rack server

Fujitsu SAN Storage ETERNUS DX100 S3

Konect Elite Server Management Software

Microsoft Windows Server® 2012

Microsoft Hyper-V®

This Private Cloud Fast Track solution provides you the following benefits:

Faster deployment with the ability to adapt to market pressures by leveraging the scalable

design of the architecture.

Reduced risk with a tested and validated solution with end-to-end interoperability of compute,

storage, and network components

Predictability with a consistent experience to the hosted workloads with standardized physical

servers, network devices, and storage systems.

This solution provides rapid deployment, configuration, and provisioning of virtual machines, with the tight

integration of the storage architecture. The dynamic provisioning in this solution includes the ability to

create templates to VM library, create new machines from templates in library, to a highly available

cluster with two nodes to shared storage. Storage architecture, critical for Hyper-V cloud solutions, is a topic that rapidly changes with new

standards, protocols, and implementations. Fujitsu’s SAN storage can scale as you provision additional

VM workloads in this cloud solution, providing high availability to these workloads.

Konect Elite Server Management Software offers the ability to dynamically sync, create, configure, and

manage Hyper-V VM workloads from a single management pane tightly integrated into Hyper-V

dramatically simplifying VM workload management while maximizing investment into the Microsoft Private

Cloud to provide high availability to the management system referenced. This reference architecture guide is for IT administrators involved in small to medium sized data center

planning and design, using a Hyper-V private cloud infrastructure. You need some familiarity with the

following:

Microsoft Windows Server 2012

Microsoft iSCSI Initiator

Microsoft Hyper-V failover clustering

2. Solution Overview This reference architecture is built on hardware and software virtualization platforms from Fujitsu,

desktopsites, and Microsoft.

Two (2) Fujitsu Compute nodes RX300 S8 rack with redundant failover

One (1) Attached Fujitsu SAN Storage ETERNUS DX100 S3 with redundant failover

Konect Elite Server Management Software to configure, manage, deploy and provision Virtual

Machines

A compute node rack server used for this reference architecture typically hosts 30 virtual machines,

hosted by the two (2) node tenant cluster. Also 30 RemoteApp and desktop sites can be supported. If

you allow for the ability to failover virtual machines in case of a server node failure or maintenance, this

architecture hosts a total of 30 running virtual machines and 30 RemoteApp and Server desktop session

users.

This reference architecture provides the following capabilities:

Virtual machine high availability — With the Fujitsu Compute nodes RX300 S8 running Hyper-

V failover clustering, the virtual machines deployed in the failover cluster are highly available. In

case one of the nodes in the cluster fails, the virtual machines residing on that node automatically

fail over to another node in the cluster.

Virtual machine live migration — A virtual machine can migrate live from one node in the

cluster to another node to balance workloads or to perform server maintenance.

Virtual Machine Management Software —Konect Elite Server Management Software

provides the ability to dynamically create and manage VM library shares and templates, while

dramatically simplifying the process to create, configure, and provision new and existing VM’s.

This size of this reference architecture is based on the following goals:

Tolerate the failure of a single Hyper-V host in the tenant node cluster to continue running virtual

machines from the failed node by restarting them on another node in the failover cluster.

Reserve sufficient memory for the Hyper-V management partition

Provide adequate storage capacity and performance on Fujitsu Storage DX100 S3 to support the virtual machines and RemoteApp/Desktop user sessions.

environments. The unified ETERNUS SF storage management software enables single point

3.3.1 Konect Elite Server Management Software

Konect Elite Server Management Software Manager is the management software for managing the virtual machine center used in this reference architecture. The virtual machine center lets you create VM templates, create VM’s from those templates to multiple nodes in the cluster, manage, provision, and configure VM settings, networking and storage resources of those VM’s in a private cloud.

3.3.2 ETERNUS SF Express Manager

ETERNUS SF Express Manager is bundled with ETERNUS DX entry level disk storage systems to

simplify storage system management and maintenance. The software helps to monitor multiple

ETERNUS DX100 S3 disk storage systems with one centralized console. In addition to that, ETERNUS

SF Express manages Advanced Copy functions of the storage system for snapshots and clones with a

simple management console. Overall, the storage management software ETERNUS SF Express

simplifies operation and maintenance to leverage more enterprise features of ETERNUS DX entry level

disk storage systems.

3.3.3 Microsoft Windows Server 2012 with Hyper-V

Microsoft Windows Server with Hyper- V is a virtualization platform that helps organizations of all sizes realize considerable cost savings and operational efficiencies. With industry-leading size and scale, Hyper-V is the platform of choice for you to run your mission critical virtual machine workloads.

3.3.4 Microsoft Failover Cluster Manager

Microsoft Failover Cluster Manager provides high availability and scalability to many server workloads.

The server applications can run on physical servers or virtual machines. Failover clusters also provide

Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) functionality that provides a consistent, distributed namespace that

clustered roles can use to access shared storage from all nodes. With the Failover Clustering feature,

users experience a minimum of disruptions in service.

3.3.5 Microsoft iSCSI Initiator

Microsoft iSCSI Initiator, iSCSI initiator makes a connection to the iSCSI Target by logging on to a Target.

There could be multiple Targets on the iSCSI Target Server, each Target can be accessed by a defined

list of initiators. Multiple initiators can make connections to the same Target. However, this type of

configuration is only supported with clustering. Because when multiple initiators connects to the same

Target, all the initiators can read/write to the same set of iSCSI virtual disks. With Clustering, only one

machine is allowed to access the iSCSI virtual disk at one time.

4. Solution Design

For ease of management, scalability, and predictable performance, this solution uses the following as

pooled resources in support of the private cloud architecture.

Compute - PRIMERGY RX300 S8— The resources to host Virtual Machines (VM)

Storage - ETERNUS DX100 S3 — Supports high availability to shared storage for rapid

deployment of virtual machines and RemoteApp/Desktops session users.

Networking – The networking and connection ports required for this reference architecture.

Management Software - Konect Elite – Server Management software to dynamically provision,

create, configure, and deploy Virtual Machines on multiple nodes in cluster.

4.1 Compute

The Fujitsu PRIMERGY RX300 S8 Compute farm has two (2) rack servers running Microsoft Windows Server 2012 with Hyper-V and failover clustering. Configure a two-node Hyper-V failover cluster to support the management infrastructure and provide high availability.

This two node management cluster supports the deployment and management of virtual

machines.

Configure a two (2) node Microsoft Hyper-V failover cluster to host the tenant virtual machines that are

deployed via the management cluster. This provides the ability to quickly move virtual machines between

nodes in the cluster enabling high availability.

4.2 Storage

The Fujitsu ETERNUS DX100 S3 is used to support the storage requirement for capacity, performance,

and rapid provisioning of a private cloud infrastructure, deploy and configure Microsoft iSCSI Target.

The storage configuration for the private cloud architecture consists of:

4.3 Networking

This documents the required network switch configuration and cable setup required for both compute and

storage referenced in this architecture requirement

4.4 Management Software

Use Konect Elite Server Management Software and Microsoft tools to provision a two (2) node

management cluster to dynamically create, manage, and deploy the virtual machines and their associated

LUNs across the storage pools. Also used to publish and assign Remote Applications and Desktops

sessions. The recommendation is to use the round robin method for allocation of LUNs.

4.5.2 Server Architecture

The host server architecture is a critical component of the virtualized infrastructure. The ability of the host

servers to handle the workload of a large number of consolidation candidates increases the consolidation

ratio and helps provide cost benefits.

This reference architecture uses Fujitsu Compute RX300 S8 due to the ability to support large numbers

of virtual machines per server. It meets the requirements in the Microsoft Private Cloud program for

processor, RAM, and network capability.

The storage architecture is a critical component of the virtualized infrastructure. The ability of the store

virtual machines and to handle the workload of a large number of consolidation candidates increases the

consolidation ratio and helps provide cost benefits.

This reference architecture uses Fujitsu ETERNUS DX100 S3 due to the ability to support large numbers

of virtual machines and RemoteApp/Desktop users per server. It meets the requirements in the Microsoft

Private Cloud program for processor, RAM, and network capability.

4.6.3 Fujitsu ETERNUS DX100 S3 Setup

First you need to setup and initialize the DX100 S3. Once completed follow these steps:

1. Create 2 RAID Groups

2. Create a volume

3. On ETERNUS Set the To-server Connection Type (Setting the iSCSI Port Parameters)

4. On the server, setup the iSCSI server connectivity as per the User's Guide -Server

Connection- (iSCSI) for Windows (p3am-3382-en.pdf)

5. On ETERNUS Create the iSCSI port groups

6. Add iSCSI host to the ETERNUS.

This reference architecture implements CSVs to host the virtual machine operating system and

application data. CSVs are exclusively for use with Hyper-V failover clustering. They enable all

nodes in the cluster to access the same cluster storage volumes at the same time.

Using CSVs eliminates the one virtual machine per Logical Unit Number (LUN) requirement,

allowing multiple virtual machines to be placed on a single CSV. This simplifies the management of

the storage infrastructure in a private cloud environment.

Because all cluster nodes can access all CSVs simultaneously, standard LUN allocation

methodologies based on performance and capacity requirements of the expected workloads can be

used. Microsoft recommends isolating the virtual machine operating system I/O from the application

data I/O. This is the reason behind creating multiple dynamic provisioning pools to host the CSVs:

CSV architecture differs from other traditional clustered file systems. This frees it of scalability

limitations, such as one virtual machine per LUN and drive letter limitations. As a result, there is no

special guidance for scaling the number of Hyper-V nodes or virtual machines on a CSV volume. The virtual disks of all virtual machines running on a particular CSV contend for storage I/O.

Understand the I/O workload characteristics for the virtual machines hosted on the CSVs located in

dynamic provisioning pools. Take into consideration the IOPS requirements of any virtual machine to

be deployed along with its I/O profile (for example, random read and write operations versus

sequential write operations).

3. Under the Connectivity tab: Expand the category Port Group, then select iSCSI

The iSCSI ports should be displayed

You can select multiple ports for this step and configure all of the ports at once, as long as all of

the ports are of the same type, i.e. all 1Gbit/s. The modification screen will then have a pull

down tab that allows you to switch between ports.

Modify the iSCSI port parameters updating the IP address and default Subnet to each port. It is

also recommended that you change the iSCSI Name on each port so that they each have a

unique name. By default the iSCSI Name is the same for all ports on the array. We usually

recommend that you add the port number to the end of the default iSCSI Name, such as

“iqn.2000-09.com.fujitsu:storage-system.eternus-dxl:0004437b-CM0P0”

4. Under Connectivity: Select the Port Group Category and then click on Create iSCSI Port Group This function creates a new iSCSI port group, and registers the port to be a member. An iSCSI port group is a group of iSCSI-CA type ports that are connected to the specified host group. This function configures the host affinity setting for each iSCSI port group.

The procedure to create an iSCSI port group is as follows:

1. Click [Create iSCSI Port Group] in [Action].

2. Specify the name of the port group to be created, select all the ports to be registered in

the port group, and click the [Create] button.

a. Name (ex: PortGrp#1)

b. Specify the port group name. An existing port group name cannot be

specified. The following input conditions apply: - Up to 16 alphanumeric

characters and symbols (except ", (comma)" and "?") – Space

5. Adding the iSCSI Host

a. Under the Connectivity tab, click on Add iSCSI Host

b. From the Add iSCSI Host screen, add a name and select the host

response type (for windows, it should remain to default)

c. Cut and Paste the iSCSI names of the host by selecting the « manual

Input » tab and clicking on « add »Click Add. A confirmation screen will

appear. Click ok.

d. Additional host groups are needed if they are not part of a cluster. If the

hosts are a part of a cluster then they should be added to a single host

group.

4.7 Network Architecture

Private cloud solutions must be designed specifically to provide high network performance and high

availability.

With Hyper-V and host clusters, define networks on all nodes. This is necessary so a virtual machine to

be able to failover to any node and maintain its connection to the network.

4.7.1 iSCSI Channel Architecture

Hyper-V users can use iSCSI Channel SANs to virtualize guest virtual machine workloads that require

direct access to SAN logical unit numbers (LUNs).

ISCSI Channel allows you to operate in new scenarios. This includes running the Windows Server

failover-clustering feature inside the guest operating system of a virtual machine that is connected to

5. Engineering Validation

This Microsoft Private Cloud reference architecture was designed to provide a robust infrastructure for the

customer to deploy a private cloud quickly. Since each environment is unique, specific testing was only

performed to ensure that the underlying infrastructure met the requirements of the Private Cloud program

from Microsoft. The specific tests performed were the following:

Ensure that the network design was properly configured for both performance and availability Ensure that the management structure was properly configured for high availability and failover on a 2

node cluster with attached external storage.

Ensure the management of VM creation, deployment, and provisioning using the Konect Elite

Management server SW.

The solution described in this white paper passed all of Microsoft validation testing for the Microsoft

Private Cloud 2012 program.
