Kolkata, Wednesday, August 30, 2017 www.pbdkol.com 3 kolkata political businessdaily the .. . . SUMAN MUKHERJEE NABANNA, AUG 29 "TODAY'S meeting with hill parties was positive and took place in a cordial atmosphere," said the chief minister Mamata Banerjee after the meeting at the state secretariat Nabanna. Addressing the media, she said they (hill parties) raised Gorkhaland issue but we did not agree with it as it was not our prerog- ative to take a decision on the issue. "Meeting with hill parties positive. We requested them to with- draw bandh in Darjeeling hills," Mamata Banerjee added saying they can always raise the issue in a democracy. With the indefinite shutdown in the Darjeeling hills entering its 78 th day, all eyes were set on today's crucial all- party meeting convened by the West Bengal gov- ernment at the state secre- tariat. The meeting was convened by the state government following a letter of request by the GNLF. Later, GJM also sent a letter to the chief minister expressing will- ingness to participate in the meeting . Leaders of several par- ties from the hills also joined the talks, amid reports of cracks in the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) and the Gorkhaland Movement Coordination Committee. "We hope we will be able to find a solution to the Darjeeling crisis. We have to discuss the issue of withdrawing the indefi- nite bandh after being back to the hills. We also demanded the CBI probe and judicial probe into the deaths of GJM men dur- ing the bandh and agita- tion. We also wanted all cases against the GJM men be withdrawn," said GJM leader Binay Tamang, who is leading the party's five- member delegation, told reporters after the meeting in the presence of the chief minister. The Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF), Jan Andolan Party (JAP) and the Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League (ABGL) attended the meeting along with the GJM. Banerjee said that next meeting would be held on September 12 at Uttarkanya in north Bengal. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that her government wanted to restore peace in the strife- hit region. Banerjee had taken the initiative to call the meet- ing between the govern- ment and hill parties after the GNLF wrote to her requesting for opening a dialogue to resolve the cri- sis caused by the shut- down in support of the demand for a separate state of Gorkhaland. During the meeting, Banerjee was accompa- nied by the ministers Partha Chatterjee, Aroop Biswas, Goutam Deb, state's chief secretary, home secretary, police chief and ADG Law and Order. GJM chief Bimal Gurung has alleged that there is a conspiracy by some hill leaders to frame him. In an audio message on Sunday night, Gurung warned the leaders that if they discussed with the state government, any other issue other than 'Gorkhaland', then they would not be allowed to return to the hills. The indefinite shut- down in the hills entered its 78th day today. The unrest had begun on June 8 over the GJM's allegation that the state was trying to impose Bengali language in the hills. The GJM took out ral- lies in various parts of the hills demanding restora- tion of the Internet servic- es, which remained banned in the hills since June 18, and an immediate withdrawal of police forces from Darjeeling. Members of some polit- ical party, dressed in tradi- tional Nepali attire took out rallies and raised slo- gans in support of Gorkhaland when the Nabanna meeting was on. GJM activists and NGOs were seen distribut- ing food among locals as supply remains severely- hit due to the prolonged shutdown. All-party meet on hill positive, says Mamata PBD BUREAU KOLKATA, AUG 29 AMID reports of rifts with- in the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), its convener Binay Tamang today said he has no differences with party supremo Bimal Gurung and the Gorkhaland issue will be the focus of talks with the West Bengal government today. Tamang's comment comes in the backdrop of Gurung's allegation that there is a conspiracy by some hill leaders to frame him. "I have no differences with our party president Bimal Gurung. An audio clip was circulated in the media, but it is not clear against whom he has made those allegations. "Every decision was taken after the approval of the party's central commit- tee. I don't want to react on whatever my party presi- dent has said, but yes some of us have felt insulted," he said. In an audio message on Sunday night, Gurung had warned the leaders that if they discussed with the state government, any other issue other than 'Gorkhaland', they would not be allowed to return to the hills. When asked whether the issue of a separate state of Gorkhaland will come up in the talks, Tamang said, "For us the issue of Gorkhaland is of prime importance and will come up in the talks. We want peace to be restored in the hills." He, however, said even if the talks are successful, there were little chances that the indefinite shut- down, which today entered its 76th day, will be called off as the final decision will be taken by the party's cen- tral committee. "Even if the talks are fruitful, decision to call off the strike cannot be announced today. The final decision in this regard has to be approved by the party's central committee," Tamang said. Doctors man- aged to rejoin the frac- tured right hand and knee-patella after a pro- longed operation.
