May 2015 4

In several weeks we will celebrate the Festival of Shavuot, known as “z’man matan torateinu”—the time of the giving of the Torah. In addition to the practice of reciting the Yizkor Memorial prayers for our loved ones on Shavuot, there is also the

custom of reading The Book of Ruth. Many reasons have been advanced for reading this book on Shavuot. One is that the entire Ruth story takes place around the time of the early spring harvest, which is about this time of year. The other reason given is that the book ends with the genealogy of King David, and legend has it that King David was born and died on Shavuot. I personally believe that these reasons are less cogent than the simple rea-sons I wish to advance. Shavuot is the festival that commemorates the giving of the Ten Command-ments, the giving of the Torah, which shaped the life of the Jew. For a long time we had a good idea what a good Jew was. Today we are more confused. The Jew who attends the synagogue regularly says he is a good Jew. The Jew who is charitable comes along and says that he is a good Jew. He is followed by the Zionist, who says that he is a good Jew. The member of ADL says that he who defends Jewish honor is the good Jew. Who is right?

Our confusion comes from the fact that our Jewish

life has become fragmented, and each one holding a

fragment claims it to be the whole. The Book of

Ruth gives us an answer to what we should expect

of one who calls himself a full or complete Jew.

Ruth, the main character of the book, is a Moabite

who threw in her lot with the Jewish people. Tradi-

tion considers her to be the first convert to Judaism.

In the most touching scene in the book, Naomi, the

mother-in-law of Ruth, argues with her saying that

now that her husband has died, she should return

to her own people and to her parent’s house. To this

Ruth answers with moving words that overwhelm

us by their beauty and sentiment:

“Entreat me not to leave you, and to return from

following after you; for whither you go, I will go,

and where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall

be my people and your God my God.”

Our rabbis comment that each statement of Ruth

was an answer to some query of Naomi. Naomi

explained to her what was expected of a daughter

of Israel, and Ruth accepted each of the obligations.

It was not enough to say, “Whither you go, I will

go.” It was not enough that she would mix with

Jewish groups and join Jewish organizations. She

said “Your people will be my people” because one

cannot be a Jew and not identify himself with the

Jewish people as a whole. To “your people will be

my people” one must add “and your God will be my

God.” What makes one a Jew is the total picture.

One can claim to be a good Jew by embracing just

one of the characteristics of the Jew. But it will be

an incomplete Judaism.

As we begin the countdown to Shavuot, I hope that

you will search your hearts for what is incomplete

in your Judaism, your faith and in your life. Let us

learn from the counting of the omer to number our

days and utilize each day to make it the most useful

and the most meaningful. And for those of us who

will be joining us on Shavuot to recite Yizkor, I pray

that the memory of our dear ones inspire us to do

deeds of tzedakah and that God guides us in the

path that will lead to a life blessed with peace, dig-

nity, meaning, usefulness, and a sense of satisfaction

that comes from a life of achievement.

May 2015 5

The Monthly Skimm for May 2015 (borrowed from my favorite morning email) Some of you may know The Skimm. It’s a daily email (Monday - Friday) that brings you the most important news of the day (according to their online editors) and delivers it in

a humorous manner. So here’s my take for the TEMPLE SHOLOM May 2015 Skimm for the hundreds of you that wait for my monthly column with baited breath (that’s my attempt at humor).... Skimm’d while trying to act Presidential before services...... When a congregant you’ve introduced yourself to four different times still asks why you wear a name tag and are so friendly all the time. (I’m smiling, really, I am). QUOTE OF THE MONTH (or for the last nearly two years) Change is hard. Yes it is. In the past two years our Temple has un-dergone an enormous amount of change -- (think: new Cantor, new Temple Administrator, new Rabbi to start July 2015, new parking lot, new old wing HVAC system, new Chapel windows, new Bayit (essentially), new chavurot for your social pleasure among other things). Someone (and he’s a friend) told me recently that my legacy as President will be the new parking lot. My answer was: REALLY?? THINGS PEOPLE SAID “WHERE ARE THEY?” THE STORY Over the last many years, our annual May Congrega-tional Meeting has been attended by relatively few of our Congregants. It makes me believe that either everyone is busy on that particular night OR they are just not that interested in being a part of the de-cision making at the Temple. (It’s probably a bit of both). However, non-attendance at a Congregation-

al Meeting doesn’t stop any number of Congregants from complaining about a variety of issues at Temple that can be discussed in that forum. Don’t get me wrong -- that’s okay, but come out so we can talk about it. So, in an effort to include as many of you in the process of lively discussion and decision making, please mark your calendars for our Annual Congre-gational Meeting on May 26, 2015 at 7:30 pm in the Chapel. Sorry, dinner won’t be served -- but I would hope y’all will come out anyway. The annual meeting tru-ly gives you a spotlight on where our Temple is headed in the future and we need you to be a part of it. “HOW COME THE BAYIT DIDN’T LOOK LIKE THIS WHEN I LIVED HERE?’ THE STORY Well, that was Rabbi Isaacs’ line when I took him through the Bayit to see the renovations we are do-ing for Rabbi Dan Selsberg and his family. He was duly impressed. We’ve had a small committee working with Richard Skydell (our congregant) to rehabilitate the home that Rabbi Dan, Karen and the boys will occupy shortly. It’s coming along and it’s coming out beautifully. Watch your email for a date where you can come out to the Bayit and help us plant shrubbery and perhaps clean up the back yard even more than it has been. We need your help! Well, that’s the SKIMM for May 2015. Hope to see you around Temple soon, (and yes, I’m still smiling....) Ellen

Since my family and I landed in Israel, we came to understand that the weekly Keren Ami do-nation in our Ulpan went to the Jewish National Fund. It seems that it was only a short time ago that I joined Temple Sholom, this wonderful extended family,

and began meeting you and your children and get-ting to know our outstanding faculty and staff. How quickly this school year has flown by!

We learn in Pirkei Avot (4:1) that the one who is wise is the one who learns from everyone. Each of your children bring gifts to our community. And everyone can plant a tree in Israel. Actually, it was much more. Since its founding in 1901, well before the existence of the state of Israel, the JNF has purchased plots of land, preserved water, drained swamps, build farms, kibbutzim , and forests on land that people thought would never bloom. They also facilitated the Aliya of thousands of Russian and Ethiopian Jews saving them from untold hard-ships in their native countries.

Today, our religious school tzedaka boxes no long-er go just to the JNF. They go to some of the other worthy charities that the children choose them-selves.

JNF is at the forefront of sustainable living in Isra-el, but the trend is spreading and there are now many organizations that support that cause. As Israeli Independence Day approaches, I am drawn to the idea of supporting Israel and ecology all in one donation.

We are obviously on a great path here. The teach-ers here at Temple Sholom have made all the dif-ference. I would like to thank each of them for their dedication and hard work through this year, and wish them a well-deserved wonderful summer vacation. Just remember, even one little weekly quarter dropped in the blue and white tzedaka can at Temple Sholom plays its part. We do not all have the opportunity to make the big changes that will help with the environment. As much as I would like to install solar panels on the roof of my rented apartment, I know that I cannot. Neverthe-

less, we can all put quarters in the environmental pushke.

What will your quarter look like? Mine has come in the form of canvas bags. I have been making an effort ever since this past summer to use reusable canvas bags for my shopping instead of plastic gro-cery bags. I don’t always remember, but I usually do. Every plastic bag that doesn’t get used by me is one less floating in the breeze.

Happy 67th Birthday to Israel!

B’Shalom, Cantor V. Yucht.

On behalf of your Membership team, we wish everyone a successful conclusion to the calendar year to

date. Please examine the many activities for which RSVP'S are requested, because at Temple Sholom, the services, classes, summer SHABBAT picnics, and social activities never end!

Our celebrating of Rabbi and Leora Isaacs requires lots of "baseball" so get your gloves and bats and help us make their send-off a home run.

Keep your calendars open because as we lovingly send off Rabbi and Leora, we are planning a huge wel-come for Rabbi Dan and Karen Selsberg on the weekend of July 24/25, including a Shabbat dinner and ser-vice and an open house/service/lunch on Saturday. Look for RSVP information on our e-blasts.

We are excited about our Chaverot groups which are planning to continue this summer, including Knit-ting for a Cause, Junior/Seniors, and an umbrella of Book Club. Mah Jongg will finish this month, and re-turn in the fall with both a beginner group and an experienced group. Everyone is welcome and we are looking for card tables to be donated to TS and live here permanently .

No more "schlepping" of card tables.

New groups in discussion include a Men's book club, a Junior/Senior Men's group, and canasta. If there are any other groups you want and are willing to organize, please let us know. We are here for you .

Coffee every Sunday will resume in the fall, and we are looking for a "coffee club" volunteer group to pre-pare the coffee, complimentary to our consumers, and organize a bagel/muffin cafe for paying customers. Please email the office with any Sunday morning spare time.

Which is a great Segue into our next important request. We need a core volunteer/hands on group of men and women who will join us in preparing for major dinner, brunch, or Havdalah events. We will publish the dates of these events well in advance and please add your name to the "helping hands" list. "Some have fun in the sun, and we have fun in the kitchen and Simcha Room."

Yahrzeits for May

With the success of our Oneg and Kiddush program, Kosher Nosh will continue to deliver plattered cookies, fruit and challah for Friday Oneg and bagels, cream cheeses, tuna, egg salad, and other salads for Saturday Kiddush. The temple will continue to provide the paper goods and the drinks. All you need to do is pick a date and write a check or tell us to put it on your bill. If there is a reason that you are spon-soring - in honor of someone or something or in memory of a loved one - let us know and we will announce it. The cost for Friday Night is $200 and for Saturday morning is $300. This will cover the cost of the food, the delivery, paper goods and drinks. If two families sponsor the same day, the cost is only $100 for Fridays and $150 for Saturdays. We appreciate your continued generosity!

Please email [email protected] to find out which dates are now available. Shabbat should not be hard work, we are trying our best to keep it relaxed and delicious!
