FROM THE PRINCIPAL – Peter Callaghan Computers and their use as a learning tool and entertainment device is well established, however, like most things that are good for use, too much can make it bad. Here are some interesting things to be aware of with regard to your pre-school and early year’s child – perhaps up to Pre-Primary level. Next newsletter I will have information more relevant to older children. The underlined red text in this article is a hyperlink and if you are not currently receiving an electronic copy of our newsletter you may wish to contact Marcelle in our front office and be added to our electronic mail out list You can speak to Marcelle in person or on 9831 2300 or [email protected]. Computer Use and Preschoolers Computer games and programs can be great fun for preschoolers – and can be educational, too. But they do have some negatives. You can help your preschooler get the most out of computer time by choosing appropriate games and programs. Computer Time for Preschoolers Most child development experts recommend limiting children’s daily screen time – no more than an hour a day for children aged 2-5 years, and no more than two hours a day for children over five. Screen time includes TV, DVD and computer time. This is for the following reasons:

Young children thrive on being with other people. This develops their relationship and language skills.

Children need to explore the real world, developing their imaginations and creativity. But some research suggests that using video games and phones (either real or toys) opens up some interesting possibilities for pretend play - ‘I’m mummy going off to work with my mobile and my laptop’.

Lifetime habits are formed in the preschool years. Children can become too reliant on computers for ‘something to do’.

Making the Most of Computer Time

The first step is choosing from the many age-appropriate computer activities and games.

Preschoolers are likely to enjoy typing letters or words on the screen using word processing software. They might like to draw pictures with a simple drawing program. Your preschooler might also enjoy some of the entertaining and educational games available for this age group – for example, Reader Rabbit or Spot and His Friends. The ABC 4 Kids website includes games based on TV shows. Our tools and activities page also has some educational games for preschoolers.

When you spend computer time with your child, you can help with what’s happening on the screen, and show that you’re interested in what your child can do. Most preschoolers will need your help to access programs and save or print their work. They might also need help understanding what to do next in a game. Your participation will help your child develop digital literacy.

Asking questions about your child’s computer activities and games gets your child in the habit of thinking about what’s on the screen, rather than just passively taking it in. Questions could include, ‘How do you play this game?’, ‘What happens when you move there?’ and ‘Which character is talking?’

Software and websites that foster creativity can be good for preschoolers. Many computer games allow children to draw pictures and make up stories or rhymes. For preschoolers, this can be a way for them to express ideas and feelings they don’t always have the words for. Games that give children simple choices – for example, choosing a character, finding a background for a picture, or selecting a game – help your child make creative decisions.

Games with ‘explore’ settings let your child play with others, rather than competing against them. Encourage your child to play with siblings and friends.

Talking with your child about how much screen time is allowed and what computer activities are OK teaches them to think, plan and make choices about their computer use. You can give your child a list of games and activities and let them choose how they want to get their fill of screen time.

Parenting tips 101 - Try this to encourage the behaviour you want in your child. Children do as you do. Your child watches you to get clues on how to behave in the world. You are their role model, so use your own behaviour to guide them. What you do is often much more important than what you say. If you want your child to say ‘please’, say it yourself. If you don’t want your child to raise their voice, speak quietly and gently yourself. (More in following weeks.) Reports As we come to the end of this Semester, a formal report of your child’s achievement will be handed out on Thursday 2

nd

July. If this Report raises questions, feel free to make contact with the school and book an appointment time with the teacher concerned.

FROM THE PRIMARY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – Jayde McIvor WAPPA Conference In Week 8, I attended the Western Australian Primary Principals’ Association Conference held in Perth for three days. During the conference I was involved in discussions regarding the changes to education in this era of reform, listened to many Key Note speakers including Dr Alma Harris, Hon. Fred Chaney AO, Carmen Laurence, Phil Riley, Dr Paul Swan and Bill Boylan. Each of the presenters is well renowned in their field of expertise and I thoroughly enjoyed each of their presentations. On Friday afternoon the conference was addressed by the Minister of Education, Peter Collier, Director General of Education, Sharon O’Neill and Police Commissioner, Carl O’Callaghan who presented a panel session where we were able to ask questions via Twitter and have them address each issue raised. The Police Commissioner shared some very interesting ideas on how to work together on solving issues raised at a school and community based level when children are in the education system to reduce/prevent the need for later intervention during adolescence and young adulthood. Speech & Drama Festival I would like to thank Mrs Marcelle Howe for all of the hard work she put in to make the Speech & Drama Festival a very successful event. Also to the Primary Classroom Teachers Mrs Hill and Miss Hewett and Miss Caldas in Secondary for helping prepare our students for the event. To all of the Parent Volunteers and Helpers who were able to lend a hand on the Festival day, thank you very much!! Dance & Drama Week All students from Year 1 to 10 were lucky enough to participate in the Southern Edge Arts Dance & Drama Week. Students engaged in painting aboriginal inspired art work, improvised role play of storytelling and exercises to prepare themselves to complete a cartwheel. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all participating students and I would like to thank Suzie and Colin Clinch for supporting this wonderful incursion. Winter Carnival All students from Year 3 to Year 6 will be participating in the Winter Carnival in Katanning on Friday 26

th June 2015. We

are also taking numerous Year 7 to 10 students who will be umpiring the games and coaching our teams. Please meet your classroom teacher and Mr Ringrose on the Secondary Basketball Court at 8:30am to have your attendance taken then board the buses. Please make sure you have your water bottle, food for the day and a change of clothes in case of rainy weather. Assembly The next assembly will be hosted by the Year 9/10 students on Friday 3

rd July, commencing at 2:30pm. I look forward to

seeing you all there.

FROM THE SECONDARY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – Bob Trouchet Student reports will be sent home with students next Thursday. Details of the parent interview afternoon and procedure will accompany them. A focus area for secondary staff during this term has been to encourage students to have a go and push themselves a bit more. Staff report that many of our students have indeed been willing to make an extra effort. It is disappointing that some students are not prepared for class forgetting pens, paper, textbooks or calculators. The focus area for next term will therefore be organisation and being prepared for class. On Wednesday students across the school had the opportunity to be involved in a squash coaching session. This was funded through the Federal Government’s Sporting Schools Programme. On Friday a number of secondary students will be attending the Primary Winter Carnival in a support role. They will be acting in the roles of coaches and umpires with our primary students. We are pleased to report that a specific request was made by the carnival organisers for KDHS students to be umpires. And finally a quote from Dr Seuss – “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”

While Coco is at home one day having a ‘Yay Day’ her friend gets into trouble at school. Coco decides to forgo her plans and instead goes to school to help prove her friend is innocent – and gets herself into a whole lot of trouble along the way!

Borrowing will cease tomorrow Friday 26

th June. PLEASE ensure that your child returns borrowed books (not textbooks)

before the holidays. I am still getting wet books returned. If a book is returned water damaged or damaged in any way an invoice will be sent home to cover the cost of replacing the book. Leaky water bottles and books are not a good combination. Could you please ensure your child comes equipped with a water proof library bag; this will help alleviate this problem. All attendance data from Semester 2, (Terms 1 & 2) entered in the system is analysed by the Department at the end of the Semester. A report is then collated on each school’s attendance records. Therefore it is of great importance that if your child has been absent from school and you have received either a SMS message, absence from school letter or phone call, that you reply to the classroom teacher or front office. This will enable Semester 1 attendance data for Kojonup DHS to be accurate. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

KOJONUP OCCASIONAL CARE CENTRE The Kojonup Occasional Care Centre is looking for expressions of interest from families who would use the Centre after school and during holiday times for their children up to the age of 12 years old. The committee and staff are hoping to get this program underway after the completion of the new Daycare Centre later in 2015. (Have a drive by on Honnor Street as it is going up very quickly!) The new facility will have a room which can be utilised separately from the younger children and where homework could be completed. Again, this is just an expression of interest so the centre could construct a plan for care of this age group of children. Please contact Joelene at the Centre on 9831 0001.
