Christian Sandström holds a PhD from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. He writes and speaks about disruptive innovation and technological change.

Page 3: Kodak and Facit

There are many striking similarities between Kodak and Facit, a former Swedish

manufacturer of mechanical calculators.

Page 4: Kodak and Facit

This presentation will put the two

companies next to each other,

illustrate and seek to explain those

similarities.

Page 5: Kodak and Facit

Facit prospered in a kingdom called Sweden.

Page 6: Kodak and Facit

The company was founded in a small

town called Åtvidaberg.

Page 7: Kodak and Facit

Kodak was founded in Rochester, NY.

Page 8: Kodak and Facit
Page 9: Kodak and Facit

Along the Genesee river in Rochester…

Page 10: Kodak and Facit

… The visionary George Eastman built the Eastman Kodak company.

Page 11: Kodak and Facit

Along the ’river’ in Åtvidaberg…

Page 12: Kodak and Facit

… A man named Elof Ericsson

founded Åtvidaberg

Industries (which was named Facit

later on).

Page 13: Kodak and Facit

The successes of these companies were based upon two major product innovations.

Page 14: Kodak and Facit

In the Kodak case it was the

Roll film…

Page 15: Kodak and Facit

… a product that empowered people to take pictures on their own.

Page 16: Kodak and Facit

In the Facit case it

was the world’s first ten-digit calculating machine…

Page 17: Kodak and Facit
Page 18: Kodak and Facit

… A masterpiece of mechanical engineering.

Page 19: Kodak and Facit

Both companies grew rapidly…

Page 20: Kodak and Facit

… And became sources of national pride.

Page 21: Kodak and Facit

As Kodak grew, Rochester grew. More and more people moved here from the countryside in order

to get a job at the company.

Page 22: Kodak and Facit

In Sweden, people moved to the small town Åtvidaberg. Here, there were

plenty of jobs at Facit.

Page 23: Kodak and Facit

”A lot of people travel to Facit for

work.”

Page 24: Kodak and Facit

Basically, these two cities wouldn’t have grown into what they were without Kodak and Facit.

Page 25: Kodak and Facit

The two companies provided their populations with well paid jobs…

Page 26: Kodak and Facit

… from the cradle…

Page 27: Kodak and Facit

… to the grave…

Page 28: Kodak and Facit

A job was a job for life…

Page 29: Kodak and Facit

… And it gave a stable income for a good family life.

Page 30: Kodak and Facit

Those who didn’t work for the company, either worked for suppliers, or the local government, which

obtained its tax revenues from the firm.

Page 31: Kodak and Facit

”Willing to cross party boundaries for the company.”

Page 32: Kodak and Facit

Mr. Eastman made a huge fortune from his success with Kodak…

Page 33: Kodak and Facit

… He lived here…

Page 34: Kodak and Facit
Page 35: Kodak and Facit
Page 36: Kodak and Facit

… Mr. Ericsson lived here…

Page 37: Kodak and Facit

… down by the lake…

Page 38: Kodak and Facit

… ministers and directors came from all over the world in order to meet here and build networks.

Page 39: Kodak and Facit

These two men also made sure to take care of the local

community.

Page 40: Kodak and Facit

Elof renovated the soccer stadium and donated vast amounts of money to the local team.

Page 41: Kodak and Facit
Page 42: Kodak and Facit

Mr. Ericsson also re-built the local church where he currently rests in peace.

Page 43: Kodak and Facit
Page 44: Kodak and Facit

There are at least 30 organizations that were either created or partly funded by Eastman.

Page 48: Kodak and Facit

In Rochester, people refer to Kodak as ’The Great Yellow Father’…

Page 49: Kodak and Facit

Both men are remembered more than half a century after their death.

Page 50: Kodak and Facit

This statue of Elof Ericsson was raised by the company and its employees in 1963.

Page 51: Kodak and Facit

When Elof’s son Gunnar took over as CEO, he managed the company in a similar way…

Page 52: Kodak and Facit

To sum it up: Rochester became a Kodak town…

Page 53: Kodak and Facit

… And Åtvidaberg

became a Facit town.

Page 54: Kodak and Facit

But the companies had much more in common…

Page 55: Kodak and Facit

… They both enjoyed a considerable global expansion.

Page 56: Kodak and Facit

Page 61: Kodak and Facit
Page 62: Kodak and Facit

Both companies were very vertically integrated – owning and controlling the entire value chain…

Page 63: Kodak and Facit

Kodak signs can still be found everywhere throughout the world.

Page 64: Kodak and Facit
Page 65: Kodak and Facit

Just like Kodak, Facit controlled the entire value chain…

Page 66: Kodak and Facit

… From the production of special components that were needed in the products…

Page 67: Kodak and Facit
Page 68: Kodak and Facit
Page 69: Kodak and Facit
Page 70: Kodak and Facit

… To the close relationship with the end customer.

Page 71: Kodak and Facit
Page 72: Kodak and Facit

Both these companies were turned upside down by the electronic revolution…

Page 73: Kodak and Facit

In 1971-72, Facit’s coggwheels were

substituted by integrated circuits…

Page 74: Kodak and Facit
Page 75: Kodak and Facit

The same thing happened to Kodak about 30 years later.

Page 76: Kodak and Facit

… Both companies lost their technological leadership…

Page 77: Kodak and Facit

… for the simple reason that the technology was now all about electronics.

Page 78: Kodak and Facit

The value of producing specialized parts was rendered

obsolete…

Page 79: Kodak and Facit

… Since those parts weren’t needed anymore.

Page 80: Kodak and Facit

Controlling the end of the value chain was also

an asset that lost its value for both

companies.

Page 81: Kodak and Facit

People were not consuming film anymore…

Page 82: Kodak and Facit
Page 83: Kodak and Facit

And they stopped buying calculators from a special company with a huge sales organization.

Page 84: Kodak and Facit

Both companies went through some tough times…

Page 85: Kodak and Facit

… And so did their respective societies.

Page 86: Kodak and Facit

Rochester and Åtvidaberg had become very dependent upon their respective companies…

Page 87: Kodak and Facit

… and this started to become painfully obvious.

Page 88: Kodak and Facit
Page 89: Kodak and Facit
Page 90: Kodak and Facit

A job at Kodak or Facit used to be a job for life. Not anymore.

Page 91: Kodak and Facit
Page 92: Kodak and Facit

Tax revenues decreased at a furious pace when all those jobs were lost.

Page 93: Kodak and Facit
Page 94: Kodak and Facit
Page 95: Kodak and Facit

While both cities have undergone some major changes, they haven’t ended up as ghost towns.

Page 96: Kodak and Facit

Summing up once again, the Kodak and Facit stories are strikingly similar, even though the companies were in different industries, in different countries

and at different points in time. Why?

Page 97: Kodak and Facit

Industries tend to grow and prosper in certain ways.

Page 98: Kodak and Facit

They’re founded around a product innovation, which is then further developed and introduced throughout the world…

Page 99: Kodak and Facit

This is often done by an entrepreneur who spots the new opportunity.

Page 100: Kodak and Facit

As industries grow and prosper they become increasingly vulnerable to technological change.

Page 101: Kodak and Facit

The vertical integration was necessary in order to handle a complex product.

Page 102: Kodak and Facit

When the technology changed and the product became much simpler, it did not require the same

dominance of the value chain.

Page 103: Kodak and Facit

… And since the companies once upon a time made their cities grow, those towns will go through some

structural changes when the firm declines.
