Melbourne Marathon - 11 October
Our involvement in the Melbourne
Marathon has been growing in the
past few years. This year we filled
the bus with 31 completing the
Marathon and 14 completing the
Half.
KR pre-Marathon trot started with coffee in
Bayswater – with Barista Gav
Ten of us joined the Spartans for their
MCG breakfast on the day prior.
KR punters at the Spartans breakfast with Deeks
The place was full of Marathon
runners with most of the 11 Legends
in attendance. Also Robert de
Castella spoke, that included
spending much time with the KR
folks. He wants us to send the bus
up to his Stromlo running festival.

The bus trip is part of the event for
us. Big Dave has a big heart and
he again took care of the troops.

Saturday then picked up our bus at
4.30am Sunday – we love this guy.
What a day was had. The new
course was fast. Weather was kind
– it was very sunny but cool to start
and the Marathon started at
7.00am which was appreciated.

There are many stories of this day in
challenging the 42km. At
Bayswater we found the Doc with a
sheepish look and a red number –
he had swapped to the Marathon
from the Half the previous day – it
seemed like a good idea. We
contacted St Johns and had a fleet
of ambo‟s on standby. With Doc,
Vincey & Mike all in the 42km, this
was “Code Red”. They all did well.
Richo moving well near the end – for a PB
Debbie was diligently training and
doing all the long hard runs.
Approx 12km towards Carrum 4
weeks out she tore her calf muscle
– not happy Deb. Physio gave her
a chance and we did not see Deb
again until Marathon day – she was
there, and finished well. Brave.
Tom in focus
Two new runners joined us for
Carrum in Helen O and Veronica –
a couple of very fast young Mums –
just what we already had quite
enough of! These two ran excellent
races. Helen‟s 3.30 rookie run was
sensational. Veronica ran her first
MM 9 years ago, now has a couple
of young children and is getting
back into running – a PB is a great
result.
Our ladies are hard to beat, and
nobody did. We won the Ladies
Marathon team trophy again.
Miranda put in a “break out”
performance whilst running several
Marathons since her debut at
MM2008. GOR, Gold Coast, and
Sydney were all in the low 4 hours.
This day she pushed on for a 17min
PB – “surreal” was how she
explained it. A great year of
distance running to Miranda.
Miranda is happy – a huge PB

Bret was under the knife last year
and hoping his dicky knee would
allow him some future running. A
long rehab and much angst
culminated in a fantastic return to
form. Much deserved.
Bret on the hard part of the run
Anthony & Neil put in Presidential
like performances with Anthony
unwell at the MCG and Neil
spending much time with a plastic
bag on the bus following his
“Captain Ahab” march around the
„G due to cramping. Both brave.
Overall, there were some great
results, brave results, and it was a
fantastic day for the club.
Half Marathon
It was wonderful to have some
runners doing their first Half and
especially good that all completed
the course well.
Big news is that our ladies won the
Ladies Half Marathon team event.

AGM 2009
Whilst not as exciting as a race, this
is an important club event. The
new committee was voted in:
President: Mike Bower
VP: Bret Butler
Treasurer: Neil Woods
Secretary: Michelle Tham
Committee:
Helen Stanley, John Signorini, Kim
Wright, Karyn Mitchell, Grant Scurry,
Anja Ahale, Marie Kavanagh
It‟s really healthy for KR to have so
many good people offering to
assist in supporting the club.
2009 was a very good year for KR.
Spartans Day
This is our special day the week
before the Marathon. We had
John Dean and other key Spartans
attend. Ian Gainey the #1 wheelie
Spartan attended again. Our
speaker was elite runner Antony
Rickard who explained his
preparation for a big race.
Doc, Spartan President John Dean, Pete &
Blackie. John ran his 32nd consecutive MM the
following week.
“Maate, this is how you should run a Marathon”
Peter Battrick, Spartan Legend has run all 32
MM’s – with “bunnies” Mike, Gav & Richo
Holidays
We seem to have many members
enjoying Europe of late. Helen ran
the World Masters in Finland. John
Signorini has just returned from
Spain. Vic travelled through Asia
and onto Greece and the Middle
East. Jimmy was in Bulgaria!

exotic, take your KR singlet and get
us a famous photo.
Smokey – BBQ for Prostate Cancer
This year we will combine our
Smokey breakfast run at Wattle
Park with a BBQ for Prostate
Cancer. This nasty illness has hit us
recently with DT having his prostate
removed. Many of us are in the risk
category and this is our way of
raising awareness and contributing
to the cause.
Getting to know members:
Michelle Tham, whilst being one of
our “young Mums”, Shelly is also
one of our longest serving
members. This year Shelly has
started a new career as a teacher
and whilst her training has been
limited, she is running really well.
Joined KR: In 1991with Brian
Mahoney. I also worked with Craig
Rooney (son of Leo) at Knox CC.

Why did you leave KR? I've had
two breaks from KRR. The first was
from 1995-99 when I went over to
the UK for the first time. The Knox
Council Offices had burnt down
and I was in a bit of a rut, so I
decided to go 'for a year'! I joined
the South London Harriers and then
Corstorphine AAC (Edinburgh) and
experienced track for the first time
since school. The second trip was
in 2003, with Anthony and Lachlan.
I was pregnant with Callum when
we left. Anthony wanted to have
a go at living and working in
another country - I knew I'd be
happy returning to the UK. We
spent the first 6 months in Bath and
then moved up to Edinburgh,
where Callum and Aislinn were
born. I joined the Portobello
Running Club in Edinburgh.
Michelle with running mate Shelagh in the
Jedburgh (Scotland) Half, October 2005
At home: I’m married to Anthony
and we have three children,
Lachlan 8, Callum 6, and Aislinn 4.
Without KRR I would never have
met Anthony. He was introduced
to me through Sharyn and Steve
Harris, who did promise to take our
first-born child in return!
Little known fact: I held the
Dumfermline 5000m track record in
1996 - 19.01.95 (Fife, Scotland not
too far from St Andrews).
What do I get out of KRR?
History and friendship. I've got a lot
of friends at Knox that I have known
for a long time. They've been there
when I had my rat-bag boyfriend
(who Gaff and Kel were going to
'sort out’), they got me through my
first marathon and we have shared
more memories than I care to
remember. The Keningtons, Whites
and McGregors have even caught
up with me in the UK! I lived with
the Signorinis for a year back in
1995.
There are so many stories I could
tell about some of the other 'oldies'
that I haven't mentioned by name,
but who have been central to my
affection for KRR. Every time I have
gone away, I have been
comfortable in the certainty that I
would just be able to slip back into
running with KRR again and that
expectation has proven correct.
However, in recent times I've also
met lots of fabulous new people,
from all walks of life (mmm, not all
are teachers!). I'm thrilled that
there are so many women now,
several of whom I would also
number among my very good
friends.
Shelly, you are a KR legend.

KR Christmas Party:
Our Christmas Party is always a top
night and this year will be the best
yet. We have booked Acorn on
Forest, in The Basin.
We have the whole place booked
and need 70+ so make sure you
come along. Running friends and
family are most welcome. Specific
details closer to the event, but it is
on Saturday 19 December. It will
have good food, great music and
great company (us). Leave the
Asics at home and bring your
dancing shoes and dress up a bit.
Whilst it‟s predominantly an adult
night, if you cannot get a
babysitter, then please bring the
kids along too.
Total cost for the party is $15 per
person plus you buy your own
drinks from the bar.
