Mason’s three pups

Brent Stevens of Montpelier, Louisiana, hasbeen coon hunting for 48 years. As a child, hisuncle, J.D. McNab, took him hunting everyweekend, and he has hunted Bluetick houndsfor the majority of his tenure as a houndsman.Although he’s given up the sport for a year ortwo every now and then – one hiatus actually

spanned 12 years – the lure of hound song con-tinues to draw him back, time and time again. In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated

Louisiana. The very next year, the state suffered a severedrought. At the time, Brent had a promising young maleBluetick, but the extreme weather conditions had de-stroyed the woods Brent hunted. With the landscapecompletely changed, and little time to get in the woodswith his dog, coon hunting became difficult, so he calleda friend in Kansas to come and get his dogs and dog box. It’s rather difficult to keep a coon hunter out of the woods, though, and Brent soon told his wife that he missed run-ning dogs. He then set out to find another hound, but notjust any hound – he wanted a nice tree dog.

Cypress Brake Scout. Brent thinks he is goingto be the best dog he has ever had.

As Brent put in his time researching coonhound breeds and blood-lines, he came across an article by John Wick about the Jug line ofAmerican Leopard Hounds. Since there are relatively few AmericanLeopard Hound breeders, and very few are located in the South, Brenthad to make several calls in order to find a pup. Eventually, he calledJohn McDill of Mississippi, who gave him his son Randy’s phone num-ber. Randy McDill knew that Brent was an experienced houndsmanwho would do a pup justice, so he sold Brent and his son-in-law theirfirst pair of Leopard females, littermates sired by Clark’s Pride and outof Clark’s Ann.

Brent and his son-in-law started the pups, Cypress Brake Bell andCypress Brake Camo Reba, on squirrels to begin their training, and thenseparated them to allow them to develop confidence and independ-ence. Brent prefers to hunt young dogs by themselves to allow themto determine their natural ability for hunting. As he states, “They eitherhave it or they don’t.”

His son-in-law took Reba home with him, and Brent focused his at-tention on Bell. Within the first year, Bell was running and treeing coonsby herself, having never hunted with another dog since she was sepa-rated from her littermate. However, Brent’s son-in-law found that hedid not have the ability to give Reba the time she needed to developher skills, so he returned her to Brent, and she and Bell sealed the dealfor Brent’s future with American Leopard Hounds.

Aside from their hunting ability, Brent was drawn to Leopard Houndsbecause of their handling ability and their temperament, which alsoenable them to be good family dogs. Brent states that he loves startinga young pup, teaching it how to handle well, and watching it grow up.He has found that his Leopard Hounds are very intelligent and easy-going, even as puppies, and this allows them to develop superior han-dling ability.

Brent begins socializing his dogs around seven weeks old, teachingthem how to behave around people and other dogs, as well as working

Brent Stevens and Johnny Williams with CypressBrake Scout and Axle after a successful night ofhunting.
