“Knowledge is the best medicine” (KiBM) is a program that helps you take control of your health and work with your prescriber and the rest of your healthcare team to manage your medicines safely and appropriately. This program is supported by leading health organizations in Canada who believe that an educated patient is a healthier patient.

Side effects, or adverse drug reactions, are unwanted effects that may happen when medicines are used under normal conditions. Before taking any medicine, you should know:
33What side effects might occur.33Which side effects are considered serious.33What to do if you experience a side effect.
Top Tips about taking your medicines safely
33 It is best to take your medicines according to the directions on the label.33 If directed, take your medicines at the same time each day, for example with breakfast, at bedtime.33 If you forget to take your medicine, do not assume you can double the dose. Call your pharmacist for information on the best course of action.33 Take your medicine for the full length of time you were instructed, even if you start to feel better.

33 Do not share your prescription medicines with anyone and do not take anyone else’s prescription medicines.33 To reduce the risk of your medicines being stolen (especially narcotics) store them in a safe place.33 If possible, use the same pharmacy for all of your prescriptions.33 Before you use an over-the-counter medicine or natural health product, make sure it is safe to use with your prescription medicines. 33 Tell your doctor, pharmacist or nurse if you have any allergies or have had a reaction to medicines in the past.
If you think you are having a serious adverse drug reaction (side effect),
seek medical attention right away.Patients should also directly report adverse drug reactions to Health Canada using online forms at
www.healthcanada.gc.ca/medeffect or by calling 1-866-234-2345.
