A Guide for Taxi Drivers This guide is to help taxi drivers prepare for the Sydney Knowledge

and Regulation Test.

As a Taxi driver, you are required to have a good knowledge of the City of Sydney, as well as the surrounding suburbs, major routes and places of interest. You must also have a good knowledge of the rules and regulations, including the road rules relating to your role as a taxi driver. You are expected to know how to use a street directory quickly and effectively. The Sydney Knowledge and Regulation Test is designed to assess your knowledge and skills in these areas. There are 5 Sections in the test and it is essential that you study the information in this guide in order to pass this test. This test is updated on a regular basis, so please ensure you have the current version of this guide. You must pass this test before completing your TaxiCare Plus Course.

Introduction PROCEDURES AND INSTRUCTIONS

You must bring the following items with you when you first sit for the Sydney Knowledge and Regulation Test.

� Photo ID Card – completed and signed � English Assessment Form � Current Driver’s Licence � Certificate of Readiness for NSW Transport and Infrastructure’s Test from your

training school � Completed Training Workbooks 2, 8 & 9 for Module Two of the currently

approved training course, declaration signed by your Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

� Receipt / Invoice from your Registered Training Organisation (RTO) � Provided proof of eligibility – passport / birth certificate or citizenship certificate.

After entering the testing room, you will be asked to: � Turn off your mobile phone and give it to the testing officer � Hand over any bags, papers, notes, street directories etc. that you have with you (These items will be placed in a visible position.)

You will be under observation by NSW Transport and Infrastructure staff during the test. Any applicant caught cheating may not be considered to be of good repute or a fit and proper person to be the driver of a public passenger vehicle and may not be permitted to re-sit the test.

The testing officer will explain the procedures and ensure that you fully understand the test requirements. In the event of test booking cancellation, you must notify NSW Transport and Infrastructure and then contact your school to reschedule your test booking.

INSTRUCTIONS

This is a computer-based test. The questions you will be given are selected at random by the computer from a databank of 700 questions. The following information will appear on your screen as soon as the testing officer has logged you on.

ABOUT THE TEST You have a total of 44 minutes to complete Sections 1 to 4. Section 5 is a practical street directory test, which you have 16 minutes to complete.

ANSWERING QUESTIONS Please read each question carefully.

To answer a question, use the <Tab> key to highlight the answer you believe is right and press the <Enter> key to select it.

PRACTICE TEST There is a short practice test for you to become familiar with the types of questions and how to answer them. The practice test contains four questions selected at random. The questions do not count towards your final score, and there is no time limit on the practice questions. At the end of the Practice Test, a message will come on the screen explaining that Section 1 is about to start – press the <Enter> key.

PROCEDURES FOR THE TEST YOUR TEST WILL COMMENCE IMMEDIATELY. Ensure you read each question carefully and be mindful of the time as there is a time limit for each section. Note: There is a clock in the top right hand corner of the screen for your convenience.

If you pass a section, you will be congratulated and can move on to the next section. If you answer more than the allowed number of questions incorrectly, you will have failed that section of the test. Press the <Enter> key and move on to the next section of the test. The first time you sit for the test you will sit for each section.

After you finish Section 4, press the button on the wall and leave it on. The testing officer will test you on Section 5 – Street Directory Test. You will be asked 8 questions, selected at random, and the testing officer will type your answers into the computer.

At the completion of the test, you will be given your results. If you pass, you need to return to your school to complete your course. If you fail one or more sections of the test, you will be issued with a Test Report giving your results in each section. You will only be re-tested on the sections that you failed. Your school will book you in to be re-tested on those sections. When you have passed all sections of the test, you will be issued with a certificate.

If you are not satisfied with the result of a test, you should discuss the matter with your nominated training school, who can then liaise with NSWTI directly. Applicants who fail to follow instructions from NSWTI staff both during, and at the conclusion of, the Sydney Knowledge Test may jeopardise their application for a taxi-cab authority.

COLLECTING YOUR TAXI DRIVER AUTHORITY CARD

Prior to a driver authority card being issued, you must provide the following items to NSW Transport and Infrastructure:

Section 1 – Street Knowledge Section 1 is designed to assess your knowledge of major streets in the Sydney CBD, inner suburbs, Chatswood, North Sydney and Parramatta areas. Major streets used in the Test are those defined in your street directory as Freeways and Motorways, Main Roads, Secondary Roads and Major Local Roads.

You need to know where a street begins and ends, and for one way streets, the direction in which they run. You also need to know the entrance and exit lanes to and from the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Tunnel.

There are 10 computer-based multiple-choice questions, to be completed in 8 minutes. A maximum of 2 errors is allowed.

Note: If you give 3 incorrect answers you will have failed this section of the test. Press the <Enter> key and move on to the next section.

HARBOUR BRIDGE AND TUNNEL The last on-ramp for the Northern end of the SYDNEY HARBOUR TUNNEL is at Falcon Street. The last on-ramp for the Southern end of the SYDNEY HARBOUR TUNNEL is at the intersection of Palmer Street and Sir John Young Crescent. When crossing the Harbour Bridge, to exit at FALCON STREET from the WARRINGAHFREEWAY, you should be in lane Two or Three. When taking the CITY NORTH EXIT off the Harbour Bridge, you should be in lane Seven. When taking the CITY SOUTH EXIT off the Harbour Bridge, you should be in lane Seven.When taking the PACIFIC HIGHWAY, NORTH SYDNEY EXIT off the Harbour Bridge you should be in lanes One or Two.

NORTH SYDNEY AREA ARTHUR STREET, NORTH SYDNEY between BERRY STREET and MOUNT STREET runs one way from North to South. Section 2 – Major Routes This Section is designed to assess your knowledge of major routes in the greater metropolitan area of Sydney. You will be expected to know the major route from one suburb to another suburb, or from a major tourist destination to any suburb in Sydney. Major routes between suburbs include freeways, motorways, main roads, secondary roadsand major local roads.

There are 10 computer-based multiple-choice questions to be completed in 8 minutes. A maximum of 2 errors is allowed. Note: If you give 3 incorrect answers you will have failed this section of the test. Press the<Enter> key and move on to the next section.

MOTORWAYS From SYDNEY AIRPORT to KINGS CROSS, if the passenger is willing to pay the toll, you would use the Eastern Distributor. From NORTH SYDNEY to SEVEN HILLS, if the passenger is willing to pay the toll, you would use the M2. From HURSTVILLE to LIVERPOOL, if the passenger is willing to pay the toll, you woulduse the M5.

Section 3 – Locations and Destinations Section 3 is designed to assess your knowledge of important locations and destinations in the Sydney metropolitan area. You will need to identify the location of important places such as Hospitals, Hotels, Clubs and other significant places of interest, which are sourced from Street Directories and Tourism NSW.

There are 20 computer-based multiple-choice questions to be completed in 13 minutes. A maximum of 4 errors is allowed.

Note: If you give 5 incorrect answers you will have failed this section of the test. Press the <Enter> key and move on to the next section.

You will need to be very familiar with the contents and index of the street directory. Youmust use the street directory supplied by NSW Transport and Infrastructure. There are Fixed-Point (LOCATE) and Point to Point (DEMONSTRATE) questions.

Fixed Point Questions (LOCATE) You must find the location in the index first and then the location on the correct map reference.

Point to Point Questions (DEMONSTRATE) � You must not mark the street directory at any time with a pen or pencil. � You may use the key maps in the front of the street directory to assist in identifying the

shortest route, but may not use them to answer the question. � After locating each point in the index, you must locate the correct maps, show the

testing officer the first point and then demonstrate the SHORTEST route to the second point.

� You will be expected to name the main roads you would travel along. � You may use Motorways, but must inform the testing officer that the passenger must be

consulted first and be willing to pay the toll. � The testing officer will terminate the test and you will have failed if you:

a) point to the wrong street or location. b) travel along anything other than a road or bridge e.g. a railway line, river etc. c) travel the wrong way along a one-way street. d) travel across parks or waterways. e) use a “cul-de-sac” or “no through” road as a through street. f) fail to demonstrate the SHORTEST route.

There are 8 questions, 4 locate and 4 demonstrate to be completed in 16 minutes. No errors allowed.

Note: If you give any incorrect answers your test will cease immediately and you will have failed. After completing Section 5 you will be given a Report with the results of all sections.

EXAMPLE QUESTIONS:

LOCATE Locate WESTFIELD SHOPPINGTOWN, HURSTVILLE. Locate the ENSEMBLE THEATRE.

DEMONSTRATE Demonstrate the shortest route between NOVOTEL HOTEL, HOMEBUSH BAY and DELHI ROAD, MACQUARIE PARK.

Demonstrate the shortest route between MEMORIAL AVENUE, LIVERPOOL and MACAULEY AVENUE, BANKSTOWN.
