Why using the INDEX and Thesaurus while searching ERIC data bases

Please select EBSCO (Education) ERIC,

following the next slides:

• 1. From home page, look for the bar across the page, click on STUDENT SERVICES or look for Library, under STUDENT SERVICES.

• 2. Select US University Online full text databases

• 3. Scroll down to EBSCO EDUCATION (ERIC)

Why browsing through ERIC Thesaurus

• The Thesaurus tells you the words to use in your searching, sometimes we need to think in general terms, instead of specific terms

• Browse for nouns and adjectives. Do not use articles, verbs or adverbs


A new thesaurus Browse screen is display. Enter your search term in the Browse field, and select

Terms Begins With


What Browse field do you want to use?

• If you select Terms Begins With, the list displays the terms in alphabetical order

• If you select Term Contains, the term searched for appears first followed by a list of terms displayed in alphabetical order

• If you select Relevancy Ranked, it will appears the exact match for the term first in order of relevance


The words to be browse are:“EDUCATIONAL THEORIES” OR “TEACHING

THEORIES.” Let’s search EDUCATIONAL THEORIES first


Mark the headings that match your interest, as many as you need


The terms selected combined them with AND, OR, or NOT and click the

SEARCH button


Limit your results to Full Text, Peer-Reviewed and from 2000 to

present time

Let me briefly explain you the reason why we need to use the

index • Our vocabulary is not

the same as the database, we need to learn the database vocabulary

• We need to be sure we are searching with the right terms, otherwise we are loosing results, and loosing relevant articles for my term paper, essay or theses

• The index tells you how many articles are indexed under each term, so you know what to expect

• The index tells you what terms to use in your search


Click the INDEX link at the top of the EBSCO host screen


Select “Descriptors” from the drop-down list


Enter your term in the Browse for field, for example EDUCATIONAL THEORIES and click Browse. From

the list, select your terms. See 8311 records


Select the check box of the terms that match your interest


Selected the terms and combined them with AND, now click the ADD

button.


Click the search button for results


Limit your results to Full Text, Peer-Reviewed and from 2000 to present

time


Click PDF Full Text to open the article


You can print, email, save in your EBSCO HOST folder and see the

citation


Now you have to continue your own journey
