CANCER Comparative Effectiveness Review number 174: Imaging for the Pretreatment Staging of Small Cell Lung Cancer This review found evidence is sparse on imaging modalities in the pretreatment staging of small cell lung cancer. However the authors managed to draw three conclusions about comparative accuracy: (1) Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) is more sensitive than multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) for detecting osseous metastases; (2) FDG PET/CT is more sensitive than bone scintigraphy for detecting osseous metastases; (3) Standard staging plus FDG PET/CT is more sensitive than standard staging alone for detecting any distant metastases. Systematic review: https://www.effectivehealthcare.ahrq.gov/ehc/products/595/2211/lung-cancer-staging-report-160414.pdf Toward Precision Therapy for Children with Cancer: An Interview with Dr Javed Khan Based on the results of a new study, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) is launching a clinical program called ClinOmics, which will use genomic approaches to help guide the treatment of patients with cancer who are treated at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center. In this interview, Javed Khan, M.D., of NCI’s Center for Cancer Research (CCR), discusses the promise and the challenges of genome-based therapy for children and adults with cancer. A Yale-led study finds that a new vaccine for human papillomavirus (HPV) would significantly reduce both cervical cancer incidence and healthcare costs if states coordinated policies to improve coverage. News: http://ecancer.org/news/9117-new-hpv-vaccine-could-curb-cervical-cancers-and-health-costs-if-adopted-widely.php Abstract: http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2016/04/13/1515528113.abstract Metastasis-promoting circulating tumour cell clusters pass through capillary-sized vessels Investigators have found that circulating tumour cell (CTC) clusters - which are more efficient in spreading cancer throughout the body than are single CTCs - can pass through capillary-sized blood vessels. Their findings, which contradict the widely-held belief that CTC clusters are too large to pass through capillaries, suggest potential strategies to reduce clusters' metastatic potential. Previous studies have shown that a combination of T-DM1 and pertuzumab is safe and effective against advanced, metastatic HER2-positive breast cancer, but in the new results, investigators tested whether the combination would also be effective if given earlier in the course of treatment. Age at first sexual intercourse is known to be influenced by social and family factors, such as peer pressure, but this study shows that genetic factors also have an influence on the timing of this sexual behaviour. It is known from other studies that first sexual intercourse at an early age is associated with adverse educational achievements, physical health and mental wellbeing.

RADIOLOGY Comparative Effectiveness Review number 174: Imaging for the Pretreatment Staging of Small Cell Lung Cancer This review found evidence is sparse on imaging modalities in the pretreatment staging of small cell lung cancer.
