To Make Up SEWING IN ENDS Sew in ends, leaving

ends from cast on and cast (bound) off

rows for sewing up.

BODY AND TAIL Fold tail in half and

sew up on outside with whip stitch for

9cm (31⁄2in). Fold the end of a

pipecleaner over to stop it poking out

and insert into tail. Curl up tail (see

photograph).

Sew down centre seam of head to nose.

TUMMY The st st side is the RS of the

tummy. Sew tummy to body, attaching

cast on row where you have finished

sewing up tail and cast (bound) off row

to end of nose, leave a 2.5cm (1in) gap

in one side for stuffing.

LEGS Cut a pipecleaner to approx

14cm (51⁄2in), insert through

chameleon’s body approx 1cm (3⁄8in)

towards head from where you have

joined tummy to tail and about 2 sts

up from tummy seam. Push

piepecleaner halfway through so an

equal amount is exposed on each side

for back legs. Wrap ri around

pipcleaner. Bend legs into shape (see

photograph). Repeat for front legs,

cutting pipecleaner to 12cm (43⁄4in) and

inserting it 5cm (2in) from nose.

STUFFING Stuff firmly, including tail,

sew up gap.

EYES Sew eye sts together so that they

form a ball, sew beads on.

TONGUE Cut a pipecleaner to 17cm

(63⁄4in), wrap in ks, leaving 1.2cm (1⁄2in)

unwrapped. Insert unwrapped end into

mouth and roll up (see photograph).

HintsChoosing YarnsWe recommend Rowan Yarns, but as

each animal takes only a small amount

of yarn, any yarn can be used, either

different colours or thicknesses. If

using thicker yarns, refer to the ball

band for needle size, but use needles

that are at least two sizes smaller than

recommended as the tension (gauge)

needs to be tight so the stuffing doesn’t

show. If using thicker yarn and larger

needles, your animal will be

considerably bigger. We feel that finer

yarns create a more refined animal.

Yarn companies are constantly

updating their ranges so sometimes

the recommended yarn becomes

unavailable.

Stuffing the AnimalStuffing the animal is as important as

the actual knitting.

Use a knitting needle point to push

the stuffing into the paw, and into the

nose of the animal. Even after the

animal is sewn up you can manipulate

the stuffing with a knitting needle. If

the stitches are distorted you have

overstuffed your animal.

We recommend using 100% polyester

or kapok stuffing, which is available

from craft shops and online retailers.

An animal takes 20—60g (¾—2¼oz) ofstuffing.

An Important Note The animals aren’t toys, so if you

intend to give them to small children

do not use pipecleaners in the

construction.

Unfortunately, for some animals the

pipecleaners are essential to sculpt

their unique shape.

Wrapping Pipecleaners in Yarn

This method is used for very thin legs

and for claws: if possible, use coloured

pipecleaners and try to match the

colour of the wrapping yarn. Leaving a

5cm (2in) tail of free yarn, tightly wrap

the yarn around the pipecleaner,

making sure no pipecleaner chenille

pokes through. Continue wrapping

down the pipecleaner to as close to the

tip as possible, then wrap the yarn

back up to the top of the pipecleaner.

Knot the two ends and slip them in to

the body. If there is a little bit of white

pipecleaner chenille showing, colour it

in with a matching felt-tip pen. A little

dab of clear glue will stop the wrapping

slipping off the end of the pipecleaner.
