GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE

Gentlemen, another Tootsie Roll season down. Total

for the two weekends,

$7614 and some change.

Thank you to all who gave

up watching Football to

come out and help with

this very worthwhile

cause.

The checks are all out to

the schools from the

Bernie Tourney, I was

able to attend the St.

Mikes Family Auction and

the Holy Family School Dinner (We were the Largest

Single Donation), I also met and delivered our

donation to the Principle of JPII HS. The Venerable

Don Robbins took care of St. Martins for me. All told

we donated $6500 to Catholic Education this Year. I

urge all to reserve the date of July 30th 2016, for our

next tourney, you may not golf but, I’m sure we all

know someone who does. Please help spread the word.

Seminarian checks are all on their way to those Brother

John Sweet notified of us, as well as the Military

Archdiocese and Bishop White Seminary for Debt

Relief. Please be on the lookout for info on our next

auction, Brother John Zrykowski will head this up

again for next year, let’s all try to give him a hand.

Upcoming events, November 14th is our Annual

Veterans Appreciation Dinner. This event is not just

for the 4th Degree. All brother knights, Veterans or not

are encouraged to attend. This year the event will be in

Our Columbian Hall starting at 6:00PM. We plan to

sponsor 80 veterans again this year, if you know of a

Veteran that would like to attend simply call myself

360-870-5597 or Sir Knight and FN Karl Hoffman

360-280-1240. Our illustrious resident chef Sir Knight

Sam Pellegrino, will be catering a traditional Turkey

Dinner with all the trimmings. Nov. 15th we will have

a Pancake Breakfast at the 7:30 and 9:30 AM masses at

St. Mikes. Volunteers as usual are desperately needed.

At Sacred Heart on the 18 Oct. I had 5. I don’t

particularly feel like cleaning up until 1:30 PM again,

just ask Bill McBride. November 19th will be our

annual Memorial Mass and Potluck. 6:00 PM at

Columbian Hall. Sam will again supply a main course,

with sides coming from the attendees. I’m sure Sam

will have an announcement in this month’s newsletter.

On Dec. 20th we will be hosting a 2nd Degree

Exemplification at Columbian Hall, details will follow.

I highly encourage all 1st degree members to attend as

there will be a third degree to follow January 30th of

2016. This the chance to move forward without having

to travel too far.

Respectfully,

Michael R. Colosi, Grand Knight

KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS

Once again this year, Brother Knight Sam Pellegrino, along with a group of volunteer Knights and Squires,

will build the “Keep Christ in Christmas” display on the patio of Pellegrino’s Italian Kitchen, 205 Cleveland

Ave. in Tumwater. Prior to Thanksgiving, we will need 16 trees ranging in height from 4-12 feet. We will

also need 4 bales of straw. Set up of trees is scheduled for Saturday, November 21st We will need all the

help we can get from Squires and Knights! That morning, Sam will provide warm food and beverages for

the cold and hungry volunteers.

All of the twinkling net lighting and some of the wiring will again have to be replaced; all statues are in need

of re-painting, the big angel and the deer figurines are becoming very worn, not to mention the dramatic

increase in the cost of electricity. Your financial help with this project would be greatly appreciated. Tax

deductible contributions can be made to the Knights of Columbus and mailed to GK Mike Colosi at PO

Box 3511, Lacey, 98509. Checks should be labeled “Keep Christ in Christmas Project.” Thank you in

advance for your generous support.

OCTOBER 2015 KNIGHT OF THE MONTH – CORBETT THORNTON

The Father Nicholas Rausch

OSB Council 1643 Knight of

the month for October 2015 is

Corbett Thornton.

Brother Corb joined the

Knights in 2004 in York,

Pennsylvania, and has been the

Faithful Scribe for the 4th

Degree for several years. He is

now retired, allowing him to

participate more fully in Knight

activities. Corb is in the Color

Corps which provides honor

guards for weddings, funerals,

the annual pilgrimage at St.

George, and confirmations at

St. Michael and Sacred Heart.

He sings with the Schola choir,

most notably singing the National Anthem at the

Rainers baseball game this last August.

Corb helps cook for the annual Cowboy BBQ, the

Hall Fish Fries, and helps with donut sales at St.

Michael after mass. He served food at the Flag

Football Project to raise money for the

Children’s Cancer Clinic in Seattle. Also,

he helped the Knights raise money for the

Tootsie Roll Drive.

Recently, he assumed responsibilities for

sending out bereavement and get-well

cards to those Knights in need.

Corb belongs to the St. Michael

downtown choir with his wife, Elaine. He

participates in the 40 Days for Life and

Show the Truth at Planned Parenthood.

He attended the Men’s Day of

Recollection at Holy Theophany

Monastery and has helped with clean-up

days at the monastery.

Corb said the reason he joined the Knights

can be described in one word, “Service,

"Service to my beloved Catholic Church,

to God, to my Country, and to my fellow Knights."

Thank you, Brother Corb, for all that you continue to

do, and congratulations on being selected as our

Knight of the Month for October.

Rev. Tim Ilgen – Council 1643 Chaplain

Ordained: June 7, 2003

Parochial Vicar: Lewis County cluster 2003-2004

Pastor: St. Rose, Longview 2004-2010

Pastor: Lewis County cluster 2010-2015

I am a

Washington

State native. I

was born in

Spokane in

1960. I spent

most of my

childhood

there. It is a

wonderful

place to grow

up. My parents

are still living

there, along

with my brother who lives close by. I have three

sisters who live in the Seattle area. All my siblings

are married and I have six nieces and two nephews.

The next generation has already arrived as I now

have a grand-nephew.

I graduated from high school in 1978 and from

WSU in 1983 with a degree in psychology. I had

various jobs after college. I believe the experiences

from those jobs have helped me as a priest. Some

jobs were administrative and some were blue collar

maintenance type jobs. I owned my own painting

business for a short while. It was at this time that I

felt called by God to the priesthood. I initially said

“No” to God’s call. I had other plans for my life.

However, God doesn’t give up that easily. God

eventually convinced me that the priesthood was

what He wanted for me, and that His plans were

better than mine. As soon as I said “Yes” it was as

if all the doors were opened and all the lights

turned green. I applied to the Archdiocese of

Seattle to be a seminarian, and was accepted by

Archbishop Murphy. I entered the seminary in the

fall of 1997. After five years in the seminary and a

pastoral year in a parish I was ordained.

God was right, of course. I have been tremendously

blessed since I said “yes”. God cannot be outdone

in generosity. As a priest I have been invited to

share in some people’s lives like I am one of the

family. I have been blessed to celebrate weddings,

baptisms, first communions, blessings of various

types, anointing of the sick, funerals, and the list

goes on. I have been a part of people’s lives in

joyous times and in times of heartache. I have felt

my heart be filled to overflowing with love and

gratitude, and I have felt my heart being broken by

sadness and the darkness of pain and suffering. Life

is filled with a wide range of emotions, and

people’s lives (my life too) can be touched by all of

them at some point.

Where would we be without Jesus in our life? I

have visited some people in nursing homes who

had no faith. They were usually depressed and felt

hopeless. The people that I visited who had faith

seemed to maintain a spirit of hope. They knew that

Jesus was close to them in their suffering, and that

He would soon bring them to a better life. As

Christians we are people of hope. Jesus suffered,

died and rose again to give this hope. How can we

not trust the promises of Someone who was willing

to undergo so much for us? Jesus came to give us

life in abundance (Jn 10:10). We need this beacon

of Light showing us the way. Jesus is the Way.

I feel very fortunate to have been assigned to

Sacred Heart Parish. I have a special devotion to

the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I am also a fourth degree

Knight, and I look forward to being with this

Knights council. I have heard many great things

about this council from some of the Knights in

Lewis County. They have spoken highly of you.

We can do all things in Christ who gives us

strength (Phil 4:13). May God continue to pour

forth His love and mercy upon all of us in

abundance, and especially upon His devoted

servants – the Knights of Columbus.

Sincerely,

Fr. Tim Ilgen
