KNIGHT LIFE2

GRAND KNIGHTS REPORT One of the hardest parts of being the Grand Knight for me is

attending funerals. I really enjoy hearing the stories about the lives of men who are Knights and their relationships with their friends and families. I really love to hear about their relationship with the Knights and their stories about their experiences at EDW. I just wish it didn’t have to be at a funeral!

In November we honor our brother knights who have died in the past year and this year we honor a Knight whose passing we had not recognized until now. We have a very special Remembrance Mass November 18 in the Main Hall. I hope you can attend this Mass to remember our brother Knights who have passed away and maybe tell a story about their life at the dinner after Mass. It also is a way for us to tell the widow and family of our Brothers that they are always welcome at EDW.One of the things you have to do as Grand Knight is go to State Meetings. They are not my cup of tea, as they say. They do have their benefits though. At the last meeting, I had a chance to text with my cousin in Ethiopia. But State Meetings also are a great way to hear what other councils are doing and how they do things. It is clear EDW is unique. There are no other councils in the Knights of Columbus like EDW. But I am not referring to the Pool or the Deep End or the Council Home. I am referring to the people who work with us as our fraternal benefit advisors. These men work hard to help our members and our council. Take the time to listen to what they are saying. A number of councils do not have a field agent. EDW has three.

Another person we have at EDW who works with us is Fr. Joe Giordano CICM. The support that Fr. Joe provides our council and our members is uncommon amongst other Councils. We are lucky to have a chaplain who gives us so much. Thank you Fr. Joe.

Thanksgiving is a great and wonderful time and is my favorite time at EDW. And for the 32-year, we will be making sure that everyone we can help enjoys this special holiday. Special thanks and to District Deputy Thom and his wife Marijo Galvin, David and Sharon Nasser as well as everyone who helps. We have been doing this for 32 years and there are people who have been helping for almost that long but there is always a place for someone new to come and help.

Don’t forget to come and help decorate the Council Home with Ladies U-Knighted again this year after Thanksgiving.

Thank you very much for all your support,Vivat Jesus,Chris Bannon

KNIGHTS HELPING OUT

EDW knights were helping out at Saint Agnes annual picnic last month. Owen Beirne (pictured with Father Edlefsen, pastor,) has coordinated working with volunteers to cook the food for many years.

Nick Beirne, Columbus Club Operations Manager, adeptly mans the beer booth.

Knights cooking and serving at Saint Ann Fall Festival Octoberfest include PGH Kenny Goss, Chuck Cogar, and Dan Valentini.

EDW WINS STAR COUNCIL AWARD AGAIN

Once again EDW was awarded Star Council at the Virginia State Quarterly Meeting in Fredericksburg. District Deputy and PGK Thom Galvin is depicted presenting the award to membership Chairman Greg Strizek. The Star Council Award recognizes outstanding achievement in membership, insurance and service program activities. To be eligible to earn the Star Council Award, a council must qualify for the Father McGivney, Founder’s, and Columbian awards.

GET INVOLVED IN HELPING EDW ACCOMPLISH 32ND ANNUAL

THANKSGIVING CHARITY EVENT

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday season, we should reflect on all of the blesings, which God has given us and how we might share those blessings with others in our community. This year EDW will once again be serving the greater Arlington community and its surrounding areas. You can get involved with our upcoming Thanksgiving Event by donating 20 lbs. turkeys (cooked/unstuffed) in an effort to reach our goal of 250 turkeys. Financial donations are needed. Those can be sent to the council office to the attention of the Financial Secretary. Note? Thanksgiving 2016? In the memo section. For further information, please contact: Thom and Marijo Galvin: (703)-623-4544!

Are you ready for some fun??? I hope so, because the 13th Annual Halloween Party is almost here!!! Please don’t forget to stop by and enjoy this pleasurable event. Once again, the Old Council Home will be transformed into the house on haunted hill. You only have a few days left to find a costume that may win you a fabulous prize in the Costume contest. Shakedown is back to provide great music and there will be lots of weird and wonderful food. Cash Bar, costume contest, live band, yummy food, and great friends – what’s not to like? This fun Adults Only party starts at 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 29. So grab a babysitter and come on by. This is an event you really don’t want to miss. If you are around the night before and want to help decorate – please come on up to the Old Council Home anytime after 7:00 to lend a hand.

Save the Date! LUK, together with the EDW Council is having their annual Christmas Tree Decorating family event on Saturday, November 26 beginning at 6:30 p.m. As always, we are having a “pot luck” get together to kick off the Christmas season. Please bring a Christmas ornament to spruce up the tree and snacks to share. If anyone is looking to downsize your old decorations and is trying to find a new home for them, please drop off any decorations in good condition and we will try to make your old decorations look elegant in the Old Council Home. Please stop up with your family and help decorate the Old Council Home.

It is already time to prepare for the annual Thanksgiving dinner to benefit the less fortunate citizens located in the Arlington community and the surrounding areas. We are looking for volunteers to donate cooked turkeys for this very worthwhile venture. If you would like to help, please drop off a cooked (unstuffed) twenty-pound turkey from November 21- 23. For more information, please contact Thom and Marijo Galvin at [email protected].

LUK is having its annual Christmas party meeting on Thursday, December 1. All LUK members (past and present), friends of LUK, and potential new members are welcome to attend. Everyone who wants to participate in the Christmas gift exchange is asked to bring a wrapped gift worth $20. This is a great meeting for potential members to attend.

If you are interested in helping out with these fun events or coming by to meet new friends, please join us. We meet at 7:30 on the first Thursday of each month at the K of C Old Council Home. Our next LUK meeting is November 3.

Please join LUK in wishing a very happy birthday to our newest member Julie Halferty (11/13). Wishing everyone a very happy Thanksgiving.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL LOAN PROGRAMThe Arlington Diocesan Council of St. Vincent de Paul will offer low-interest, share secured loans through Lafayette Federal Credit Union. The program is intended to be an alternative for people whose credit rating and income would typically disqualify them from obtaining a traditional loan from a reputable bank or credit union. These people often become the victims of predatory lenders who trap them in a never-ending cycle of debt. The borrower agrees to attend financial literacy classes offered by St. Vincent de Paul volunteers.

Our Council has committed $1000 to the program. Please consider joining us in making a donation to this

worthwhile program.Please do this now!

FINANCIAL SECRETARY MESSAGEAs we near the end of the calendar year, EDW Council will be mailing the annual dues notice at the beginning of December. Hopefully, this will not wind up “on the floor” or “in the circular file”. Your dues payment keeps you in good standing with the Knights of Columbus; and your Columbus Club dues provides the money to support the Council Home and the magnificent grounds that surround it.

There are two easy ways to pay your dues: (1) by check or (2) by credit card plus a $3.00 processing fee using the EDW website. All members who have paid their dues by the Columbus Club Annual Meeting (January 5th) are eligible to vote in the election of Columbus Club officers and other matters that may be presented.

LIFE INSURANCE AS A GIFT? The initial reaction for many people when

you mention life insurance as a gift is a quick

step back and a questioning stare. “How

morbid,” they think. While it may seem that

way when you first mention it, life insurance is

really a thoughtful gift that can be a financial

life preserver in tough times.

The problem with life insurance is the general perception. Many think of death instead of the great benefits it provides, and the security that it offers – even while you’re alive. Life insurance should be thought of as a precautionary protective measure for a family unit. The purchase of this product can mean saving your home, sending your children to college, and preserving your spouse’s quality of life in the event of your death.

One of the times you may want to purchase life insurance for someone is when a family has a new baby. It’s a great, low-cost way to set money aside for the future (i.e. college tuition, housing, business start-up, etc.). Of greater importance, it ensures these children will have insurance as adults, in case an illness later in life makes him or her uninsurable.

Newlyweds are also ideal recipients for life insurance. As they join their lives and financial responsibilities, young couples need to make sure that their early investments are fully protected. If something were to happen to one of them, the other may be faced with serious financial hardship. A life insurance policy is an ideal way to ensure their future and protect their assets.

As nontraditional as it may be, life insurance is a wise and caring gift to purchase for many people. Jack Albright 240-350-7604 Robert J. Canter, Jr., FICF, LUTCF, CSA 301-952-0180Christopher M. Stio, FIC, PGK 703-585-4978

GALA NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTY TO BE HELD AT EDW

By the time you read this it’ll be only two months until New Year’s Eve; not too early to think about forming a group or table for the 57th New Year’s Eve Gala at EDW, and asking those special friends to join you at your table.

The evening starts at 6:30pm with an open-bar and hors d’oeuvres social hour. Mixed drinks (liquor) available gratis during this one hour only; BYOL thereafter. Just before 7:30pm EDW’s

“Redcoats” will start serving a 3-course dinner. Entrée choices are: beef tenderloin, chicken marsala, and broiled salmon; vegetarian or vegan meals available upon request at time of reservation.

Dinner service will end just prior to 9 PM when the Jim Bowie Band will be on-stage to provide their wide range of dance music. For the benefit of “first-timers” (to New Year’s Eve at EDW), we’ve a large main hall, and a spacious dance floor.

As mentioned in October KnightLife, we’ve kept the cost of tickets for this full evening of food, drink, dance and entertainment the same as last year: $110. per couple; $55. per single. Tickets are already available in our Columbus Club office - during regular business hours; M-F 8 am to 4:30 pm. Options for obtaining and paying for tickets are: 1. Stop in Columbus Club office to purchase and pick up your tickets (cash, check, or any major credit card); or 2. Call CC office 703-536-9656, ext. 310 (again during regular business hours) to order your tickets providing credit card information. Tickets will then be placed in an envelope with your name on it for pick up in main lobby vestibule on New Year’s Eve; unless you opt to stop in and pick up your envelope in order that you can distribute tickets to others in your party prior to New Year’s Eve.

Ticket cost includes beer, wine and soda all evening (BYOL for after initial social hour); your 3-course dinner; champagne just before midnight; drawing for several door prizes, and continental breakfast at midnight. Any questions - call Bob Muschamp, cell # 703-489-2856

…with Ladies U-Knighted at our Annual Gift Exchange to be held Dec. 5, 7:30 p.m. at the Old Council Home. Bring a wrapped gift worth $20 and hors d’oeuvres and treats to share!
