• Let us begin our story from the beginning, with Abraham the Patriarch, or better yet with his grandson Jacob. Jacob was renamed Israel when God appeared to him when he was leaving Padn-Aram and blessed him. Jacob produced twelve sons, each of whom became the father of one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Reuven, Shimon, Levi, Yehuda, Issachar, Zevulun, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Joseph, Benjamin. Ten tribes in the north formed the northern kingdom of "Israel"

The northern kingdom of Israel lasted just over 200 years and was conquered by Assyria around 722 B.C.

• Two tribes (Judah and Benjamin) formed the southern kingdom of "Judah.’’

• The southern kingdom of Judah lasted just over 300 years and was conquered by Babylon around 586 B.C.

• The Southern Kingdom consisted of 2 tribes (Judah and Benjamin). The kingdom extended in the north as far as Bethel, while in the south it ended in the dry area known as the Negev. Its eastern and western boundaries were the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. Jerusalem was its capital and it lasted from about 922-586 B.C.

 • Judah was left suddenly independent when Rehoboam flatly

refused to lighten the heavy load of forced labor and high taxation imposed on the Israelites by his father Solomon (1 Kin. 12:1-24). Upon Rehoboam's refusal, the ten tribes living north of Bethel promptly declared their independence.

The Sadducees

Claimed to be descended from Zadok (2 Sam, 15:24) a famous priest.

They disagreed with Jesus when he cleansed the temple and spoke about resurrection as they did not believe in life after death. They believed in the Jewish law and disliked anyone who broke the laws.

The Pharisees

Kept the laws of Moses but also changed them to suit their own ideas. They did not have a personal relationship with God and as long as they kept the laws they were happy. They would not have liked Jesus because he mixed with tax collectors and healed people on the Sabbath and he forgive people their sins which the Pharisees thought as blasphemy. Jesus thought they were hypocrites

Scribes

Theses were also Pharisees ands used to interrupt the law, so Jesus would call them hypocrites as they often accused him so so being.

Zealots

These people wanted the son of God (messiah) to kill the Romans and to become the king of the Jews. They did not like Jesus because he spoke about peace and forgiveness.
