Konkan Muslim Education Society’s G.M.Momin Women’s College has been selected for
the prestigious STAR COLLEGE SCHEME of Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of
Science and Technology, Government of India during the academic year 2016-2017. The
scheme is focusing on strengthening the undergraduate science teaching in colleges selected
under this scheme. Currently, our five departments are supported (Botany, Chemistry,
Physics, Zoology and Information Technology) under this scheme. Various student-centric
activities are conducted for overall development of students, including Lecture Series, Hands-
on-Trainings, Workshops, Industrial Visits, Research Projects and Competitions as well as
Faculty trainings. This Summer School was conducted specially for S.YBSc students from
Botany, Chemistry, Physics, Zoology, Information technology and Biotechnology students. It
consisted of total fourteen technical sessions including invited talks, workshops, and hands on
training sessions from eminent personalities from other institutions and our College. Total
number of beneficiary was 70. Four I.T teachers also attended the Summer School. Details of
various technical sessions are as follows:
Technical Session 1: Hands on “Fascinating Experiments in Science”
Theme of the session was based on the fact that the Universe is governed by the laws of
Physics. It ranges from micro-concepts like atoms to macro-conceptual galaxies. The Light,
Sound, Friction, Gravitation, Pressure, Temperature, Velocity, Electricity and Magnetism
have all surrounded us. Mr. Bhagwan Chakradeo and his team demonstrated various
experiments based on following topics/concepts:
Newton’s cradle (elastic collisions) Newton’s laws Centrifugal and centripetal force Law of conservation of angular momentum Equilibrium and center of mass Gyroscope Vertical spectrometer (demonstration of minimum deviation) Double refraction Reflection, Refraction, Diffraction etc. using LASER beam Total internal reflection – TIROSCOPE Optical fibers Mixing of different color lights (from LEDs) Electromagnetic induction Faraday’s laws and Lenz’s law Shock machine Plasma discharge Magnetoscope Floating Ball
Technical Session 2: Invited Talk “Micro to Macro
Wide range of animals from micro size insects to macro size mammals were discussed in the
talk. Students also had an opportunity to see Macro photography which is extreme close- up
photography, usually of very small subjects and living organisms like insects, in which the
size of the object in the photograph is greater than life size.
Technical Session 3: Workshop on “Basics and handling of Microscope”
Botany, Zoology and Biotechnology students are using the microscopes more frequently
during their practical courses. Various topics such as parts of microscopes, microscope usage,
microscope care, How it works?, Magnification, Resolution, slide preparation, Image
capabilities were discussed in the session. In addition to this various Microscopy activities
were takes during the session.
Technical Session 4: Workshop on “Using Software for plotting graphs and data
Analysis”
Origin is the data analysis and graphing software of choice for scientists and engineers in
commercial industries, academia, and government laboratories worldwide. Origin offers an
easy-to-use interface for beginners, combined with the ability to perform advanced
customization. Origin graphs and analysis results can automatically update on data or
parameter change, allowing us to create templates for repetitive tasks or to perform batch
operations from the user interface, without the need for programming.
Similarly GraphPad Prism, available for both Windows and Mac computers, combines
scientific graphing, comprehensive curve fitting (nonlinear regression), understandable
statistics, and data organization. This workshop gave the basic information on the software
and hands on practice were taken for different sets of readings.
Technical Session 5: Invited Talk “Medical applications of LASER”
A laser is a device that emits light through a process of optical amplification based on
the stimulated emission of electromagnetic radiation. A laser differs from other sources of
light in that it emits light coherently. Our Eminent speaker Dr. Arvind Shaligram from Pune
University, discussed the topics such as basic theory for lasers, types of lasers, high and low
level lasers, applications of Lasers in cutting, welding, optical communications, Oil
Fingerprinting (spectroscopy, Atmospheric pollution monitoring (LIDAR), Lasers used in
Medical applications(CO2 Laser, Nd YAG Laser, Ar+ Laser, Dye Laser), Lasers in beauty
therapy, Laser Treatment & Diagnostics, LASERS in Ophthalmology, Concepts of LASIK,
coagulation? This session really raise the curiosity among students and teachers to know
more about Lasers.
Technical Session 6: Invited Talk “Generating Research Idea”
This session gave the brief information on research methodology to be adopted by the
students while doing their research. Topics such as attributes of good research, sources for
generating research topics or research ideas and turning research idea into research project
were also discussed. Dr. Sathe also suggested some topics for projects.
Technical Session 7: Workshop on “Chocolate moulding and Cake baking”
The basic technique and procedures for “Chocolate moulding and Cake baking” were
demonstrated to the students in the session. Students enjoyed the session a lot. This session is
an attempt towards the Entrepreneurship Skill Development among our students.
The resource persons were the students trained in last year certificate course
Technical Session 8: Invited Talk on “Aquarium setting and ornamental fish”
This session on setting an aquarium offered students the opportunity to learn directly through
experience. Caring for the aquarium kindles a sense of responsibility, achievement, and a
genuine desire to learn. It also helped to encourage and develop an interest in reading,
writing, critical thinking and problem solving skills in science.
Technical Session 9: Hands on Training on Gel Electrophoresis
Physical basis of Gel Electrophoresis, types of gels (Agarose, Polyacrylamide, Starch),gel
conditions, Buffers, visualization and applications were discussed in brief. Also students
learnt the technique by doing hands on practice. It was wonderful experience for students
from non biology background.
Technical Session 10: Invited Talk “ Chromatin Remodelling factors: The Global
regulators of gene expression”
One of the emerging topics in biological sciences i.e Chromatin remodelling which is the
dynamic modification of chromatin architecture was discussed in the session. Some of the
topics covered were levels of chromatin organization, replication and transcription in
chromatin context, solution to packaging problem, chromatin remodeling complexes, role of
chromatin remodeling Complexes, Distribution and role of chromatin remodeling complexes
in plants, and roles for chromatin remodeling in human cancer.
Technical Session 11: Invited Talk “Recent Trends in Nanotechnology”
Brief information on Nanomaterials, Nanoscience, Nanotechnology and property
enhancement in nanostructured materials was discussed including the various methods of
