Summer Reading Parent Night Hosted by Kirby’s Mill and BCLS
+Welcome
Thank you for joining us tonight!
Parents - We hope that you leave informed and prepared to help your child read more this summer.
Kids – We hope that you leave excited and motivated to read more this summer!
+Research shows…
Kids loose two months of reading skills throughout the summer.
They don’t know where to get books to read with the school library closed.
Kids aren’t motivated to read because they don’t have the support of their teachers or librarians.
Parents cite summer as the most difficult time to ensure that their children have productive things to do.
+KMS Library Summer Reading Mission
Give children access to quality reading material throughout the summer.
Create an environment that creates excitement for reading.
Supply book lists to aid book choice based on your child’s interests and their ‘just right” levels.
Provide parents with free resources available to them to support summer reading with their children.

+Kirby’s Mill Goal Our first school goal was to read 100,000 minutes from
May 5th to September 5th. We made that goal in less than 3 weeks!
Our new school goal is to read over 200,000 minutes from May 5th to September 5th. (124 days)
That is about 6 minutes a day! How easy is that! Our Hawks are soaring with their reading!
+What happens if we meet our goal? We will have a Reading Pep Rally the
morning of September 19th .
Mr. Damon will perform a science experiment as a Mad Scientist for the whole school!
Prizes will be awarded to the top three classes that read the most this summer! Small prizes for all participants.
A special second school wide assembly will take place in the afternoon on September 19th
No “Summer Slide” will occur and our Hawks will be ready for learning in September.
