Party mense voel as hy ’n stroper was, danis dit sy verdiende loon. Maar wie is ons omte oordeel?

Ditwas iemand se kind, iemand se broer. Ditbly ’n groot verlies en ’n tragedie.

’n Familie is stukkend.

Moderne breindiagnostiek bied fassine-rende insigte inhoeonskoppewerk.

We should embrace change – not deny itBetty’s Bay resident Sylvia Vollenhovencelebrated two milestones this week – herbirthday and the launch of her film, ProjectSpear, a definitive visual depiction of statecorruption during the apartheid era and itsimplications for the present government.

Not to be confused with The Spear, theartistic exhibition of the president’s netherregions by BrettMurray,Project Spear is anattempt at unravelling the mystery of whathappened to the unaccounted billions thatwent missing from state coffers. It is alsoscheduled tobebroadcastbytheSABC.Well-known theatre personality Basil Appollis istheartisticdirectoronthe film,andusesmu-sic and dance to emphasise important seg-ments in the structure of the narrative.

It is a must-see dynamic, and we shouldinvite Vollenhoven to screen it in the

We should beharnessing them in all endeavours, inclu-ding bringing them into our political, artis-tic and economic lives.

I think we are scared of change, so prefermaintaining the status quo. When you havethe same people determining the local au-thority, the same people sitting on the

church committee, the same people runningtheorganisationandthesamepeoplealwaysbeing in charge, you have a staleness inthinkingandanoutmodedwayof seeinganddoing things. We smirk when we read of in-ternational politicians wanting to be inpower for many moons, and yet we do thesame in our little cultural body.

Inmost cases, history shows that people onthe ground eventually effect those changesthemselves. We should embrace change, notdeny its capacity for empowering us.

‘I’m sorry if you‘I’m sorry if youhave not noticed’have not noticed’Responding to KM Adams’ column on serviceinsanity: Sir, strangely enough, your descrip-tion in the last paragraph – of “someone whowas always available to the community, dea-ling with everything from broken street lightsto road closures, and even making his tele-phone number available to the constituency”– sounds strangely familiar. You could maybehave added things like “penguins, baboons, pipe bursts, policing, community welfare, un-employment issues, sports fields”, etc.

Oh yes! And you could even add “speedingon Clarence Drive, encroaching sand dunes, roads, buildingregulations”…The list goeson.

I want to assure you that my pledge has beenand still is to serve my community and, morespecifically, myward(comprisingatleastsevenidentifiable communities). Side by sidewith 12other ward councillors in the Overstrand, I dothis to the best of my ability. I am sorry if youhave not noticed.

Bentleys breeze into townCILENE BEKKER

The real estate value of the park on the cor-ner of 11th Street and 6th Avenue in Voël-klip increasedbyvolumeswhen25Bentleyowners parked their vintagemodels on thegreen grass last Thursday.

The stopover in Hermanus was part of thescheduledseventh InternationalVintageBent-ley Tour of South Africa covering some4 500 km.The owners hail fromAmerica, Switzerland

and Germany, with the majority – 22 Bentleyowners – from theUK. Six of the Bentleys haveSouth African owners; among themwere Rob-ert and Maryke Middelmann of HoningklipDryflowers in Bot River, who drive a 1930Speed 6model. “When Imetmyhusband,” saysMaryke, “he was already playing with vintagecars. It was a school hobby. And I still comesecond!” she smiles.Theoldestmodel in the tourgroupwasa 1922

is always included in his itinerary, and hasproved to be one of the highlights of the eventover the years. The group gathered for a quick cuppa and

a sweet bite with their Voëlklip hosts, andtimed it well to coincide with whales perform-ing in the bay like paid actors. After the teatime stop, the Bentley owners

opened throttle to Onrus for their luncheon atMilkwood restaurant. These cars may be vintage, but they can do

over 100 mph.Miles, yes. These wonderfulma-chines, designed by the EnglishmanWOBent-ley, are race cars.Woolf Barnato, son of Kimberley’s Barney

Barnato, was chairpersonofBentleyMotors inthe1920s,anddroveBentleys threetimestovic-tory at the 24-hour Le Mans race.

John and Jill May from Oxfordshire, England, have owned their 1930 Speed 6 model for 32 years. Besides the SAtour, other recent trips included drives to Germany, Turkey, Perth to Sydney, New Zealand and a race at Laguna Seca.About racing speed, he said the only limiting thing is the wind in one’s face. Not owners, but proud sharers of the Bentley name – on the left and right are Kathy and Barney Mulock-Bentley,from Hermanus. With them, enjoying the display, are Kathy’s parents Sheila and Gerald Alanthwaite.

This was the fourth Internation-al Vintage Bentley Tour of SouthAfrica for Cedric and MandyCook, who live in Cornwall, Eng-land. He said their 1928 4,5 Lmodel has been a “member ofthe family for 30 years”. Shehandles beautifully, he added, pointing to the words on thebonnet: “A thing of beauty is ajoy forever.”

Do you know of a place called Sonesta? After the 1950s, when the nationalist govern-ment introduced separate development to thecountry, so-called “people of colour” werebarred from beaches, from living in “white”areas, and from entering hotels or cafés inthese areas. It was argued that different races should be

allowed to develop separately. In 1978 or thereabouts, the Coloured Devel-

opment Corporation obtained land on the BotRiver lagoon and built the Sonesta HolidayResort with luxury facilities to be used exclu-sively by non-whites.The complex comprised a large conference

centrewith dance hall and restaurant, aswellas rondavels and a campsite.Tom Bromley, civil engineer in charge of

the development for LTA Construction, hasbeen able to fill me in on some of the detailsof the project. He is now retired and lives inCape Town.In addition, Frans Esterhuizen of Fisher-

haven knows some of the history of Sonesta.Cape Nature Conservation eventually took

Sonesta over. In 1992, it sold the resort to theSteinmanns, who renamed it “Meer-en-See”(literally, “Lake and Sea”).Meer-en-See is situated 13 km before Her-

manusontheR43 fromCapeTown,ontheeast-ern side of the estuary. This scenic paradiseis tucked away right at the bottom end of theBotRiver estuary, where itmeets the sea. Sur-rounded by nature reserves, its “front gar-den” is the Bot River lagoon, which stretchesfor 12 km, up to the lovely white beaches withrolling waves as far as the eye can see.

The greatest variety of bird life in SouthAf-rica is found at Meer-en-See. At least 118 spe-cieshavealreadybeennotedthere,andalmost90% of the waders, immigrants from Green-land and the northern parts of the old SovietUnion, aswellas flamingosandsouthernrightwhales, are annual visitors to Meer-en-See.Oneof thenature reservesadjacent toMeer-

en-See is also the home of South Africa’s onlyherd of wild horses, which with a bit of luckmightbespottedduringahikeintothereservewith its stretches of beach, undulating grass-covered dunes, wetlands and lake on theKleinmond side of the lagoon.Accommodation offered at Meer-en-See

consisted of equipped rondavels and chalets, and a caravan park. The Steinmanns tried to maintain the pri-

vacypolicy of the previous owners, but to gen-erate funds they opened it to all races.

Unfortunately, they were inundated withbusloadsofpeopleoverweekendswhoshowedno respect for the privacy of the complex orothervisitorsor residents in thecamp, so theyhad to close the resort to the masses of dayvisitors and find other ways of generating in-come.

In 1993, they introduced conferences, wedding receptions and even Sunday meals.Theymarketed the rondavels andchalets, andthe resort was generally successful. Evengames of indoor cricket were started, andproved most popular with Hermanus resi-dents.

Slowly, the rondavels were sold to privateowners. At present all of them, as well as thechalets, are privately owned.

The caravan park was upgraded and let onlong-term. The land of the park was later sub-divided and sold to the 115 caravan owners, who became shareholders to a share blockcompany called Meerenbosch. The confer-ence centre eventually became a white ele-phantandwasdemolished,andthe landdevel-oped as Sandown Bay.

There are at present four groups of home-owners – Meer-en-See with the rondavels andchalets, as well as Meerenbosch, SandownBay, and Middelvlei.

The Steinmann brothers, Theophil andFrank, still ownsomeof theundeveloped land, but now live in Voëlklip and Franskraalrespectively.

FrankSteinmann, whogavememuchof theinformation on the matter, lived at Meer-en-See for 12 years before moving to Franskraal.
