L’important dans la tactique est de connaître le sabre de l’adversaire, mais de ne pas regarder du tout ce sabre adverse.

On ne saurait trop dire à quel point le sabre est vénéré au Japon : c’est un objet sacré, devant lequel on s’incline. Certains d’entre eux portent même un nom. Cette fascination remonte à la très ancienne mythologie shinto : une belle jeune fille fut sauvée des griffes d’un dragon par un prince qui, en tranchant la queue du monstre, tomba sur une lame – transmise par la suite au premier empereur du Japon. Mais, au-delà de la légende, l’extrême beauté de l’acier hypnotise.

Swords are so highly venerated in Japan that they are sacred objects. People bow to them. Some even have names. This fascination can be traced back back to an ancient Shinto legend, where a prince saved a beautiful young maiden from a dragon’s claws and found a magnificent blade inside the monster’s tail. That blade was passed down to the first Emperor of Japan. But even without such legends, the extreme beauty of the steel is mesmerizing.

With the help of some captivating film clips, sumptuous mountings and fearsomely sharp blades, let us now explore the samurai’s soul: his sword.

Le motif du crabe (cancer, en latin), et celui de la fleur de cerisier si chère aux samouraïs, s’imposaient.

To thank Richard Béliveau for so generously lending the Museum the finest items from his collection, we wanted to offer him an insignia (mon) worthy of a samurai. And what could be more appropriate, given that he and his research team are engaged in a daily battle with cancer?

The combination of a crab (cancer, in Latin) and a cherry blossom, so dear to samurai, seemed a natural choice.

Créer des classes et des définitions permet de comprendre le monde. Certains se retrouvent ainsi dans une catégorie, d’autres en sont exclus.

Hier, des artistes aux pratiques hors normes ont été qualifiés de populaires. Ils ont été mal aimés et souvent incompris de leur communauté. Aujourd’hui, ils entrent au Musée. L’art populaire et indiscipliné est enfin reconnu et collectionné. Comment expliquer cette reconnaissance? Des visionnaires comme Pierre Gauvreau ont ouvert une brèche dans la frontière rigide qui sépare l’art de ce qui ne l’est pas.

Libres de créer à leur guise, les artistes populaires et contemporains livrent maintenant un éventail d’œuvres extraordinaires et sensibles qui dévoilent une autre facette de l’identité québécoise. Le rural se déplace vers l’urbain. Le moderne se joue de l’ancien, le rustique du raffiné, le kitch du sublime, le beau du laid. Marginality Finds Home at the MuseumWe invent classes and definitions in order to make sense of the world. But while our categories include things, they can also exclude.

At one time, artists whose practices defied established values were described as folk artists. They were outcasts, often misunderstood. Now they have secured a place in the Museum. Folk and outsider art is at last being recognized and collected. Why the change? It’s owed in no small part to visionaries like Pierre Gauvreau, who opened up a breach in the bulwark that separates what is art from what isn’t.

Free to follow their own lights, folk and contemporary artists now deliver an array of sensitive, extraordinary works that reveal new facets of Quebec identity. The rural moves into the urban. Modernity interacts and plays with the past, rusticity with refinement, kitsch with the sublime, and beauty with ugliness. Shifting alignments provide fertile soil for deliciously unclassifiable creations.

LUCIE COUILLARD, M.A. MUSEOLOGY – EXHIBITION SPECIALIST

With fifteen years experience in cultural project management, I have completed over 40 art and themed exhibitions spotlighting heritage sites for la Ville de Québec. Project assistant on the Musée de la civilisation project, I was curator of the Desjardins Artwork Collection. I was also assistant coordinator of celebrations surrounding the 25th anniversary of Cirque du Soleil, with Groupe le Massif. As well, I have created countless concepts and designs for permanent exhibitions for the firm Bergeron Gagnon, and for the Charlevoix region’s many museums.

Recipient of a FCAR scholarship (Fonds des chercheurs et aide à la recherche) for the quality of my academic achievements, I interned at the Banff Center for the Arts (New Media Interactive Lab and Visual Arts) to specialize in interactive games and intellectual property development. My journey has led me to design countless technology-assisted projects, multimedia scenarios and fun user-friendly interpretation circuits destined, among other venues, for museum spaces.

Québec City can now be admired from its highest summit at an altitude of 221 metres, on a guided interactive circuit using multimedia technology. The presentation was backdated to 1965, marking the start of a new era in Québec. Taking visitors back in time, a virtual guide accompanies visitors on their time travels, much like a Pan Am hostess. Humans have polluted the planet, and 13-year-old Maeva is entrusted with a mission by her science and technology teacher: find a new planet from her space shuttle to replace planet Earth. Duck decoys and calls were born of functional necessity. Appearing more realistic than ever, they have become objets d’art. Placed against a natural backdrop, these carved wooden ducks and their stuffed counterparts show the every trait of over 30 species found across the country.

Ancient wooden plates annotated by Michel Sarrazin in the days of New France are the departure point of this exhibition retracing the evolution of Laurentian flora. It is accompanied by a presentation featuring sketches and specimens of species that were said to have ‘escaped from culture’, introduced from Europe and discovered in Sillery’s English gardens, near Québec City.

GRANDEUR NATURESeptember 2004 – January 2005, Villa Bagatelle, QuébecCollaborators: Guide Broquet d’identification des oiseaux d’Amérique du Nord Illustrated with original plates by Ghislain Caron, Audubon reproductions and canvasses by animal artists, close to 250 species were selected – birds, reptiles and small mammals – that can be observed in the Sainte-Foy–Sillery Arrondissement where visitors can enjoy them in their own natural habitat (St. Lawrence River shoreline, outdoor facility, urban forest).

Hyper realsistic 3D storyboards, inspired drawings providing details of the animation process behind IMAX film Giants of Patagonia. Spectacular content first served to create an exhibition featuring life-size specimens from the ROYAL TYRELL MUSEUM: T Rex and Giganotosaurus craniums, great Sauropod vertebrae, eggs and fossilized Archeopteryx. Evolution leads marine creatures from Pangaea (pre-dinosaur era) into the era of the Giants and on to their decline, when a cosmic accident precipitates their metamorphosis…into birds!

L’Observatoire de la capitale offers spectacular views of Québec City. Québec City can now be admired from its highest summit at an altitude of 221 metres, on a guided interactive circuit using multimedia technology. The presentation was backdated to 1965, marking the start of a new era in Québec. Taking visitors back in time, a virtual guide accompanies visitors on their time travels, much like a Pan Am hostess. State of the art technology plunges visitors into Québec’s rich historical past while interiors reveal an utlra modern signature.

Seeing farther into space also means seeing in real time. By perfecting our observation tools, mankind has freed itself of the limitations of the naked eye. Technology has allowed us to understand the relative movement between stars. From Galileo’s telescope to the Hubbard satellite telescope, our grasp of the firmament’s structure has evolved exponentially.
