There are already a number of popular shareways in Berry as a result of funds raised in previous years including • the shareway outside Berry Public School,• the shareway from the railway station to the

School of Arts • and most recently the shareway along

Victoria Street linking the existing footpath outside the Berry Courthouse to the footpaths and shareways on the corner of the Showground (Victoria and Alexandra Street).

THE SECOND ANNUAL BERRYJAZZ FESTIVAL – SAT 7 & SUN 8 MAY

Building on the success of the inaugural event, the second annual Berry Jazz Festival features a wonderfully eclectic mix of musical styles within the broad church of jazz. Held over two days on the ‘Mother’s Day’ weekend (Sat 7 and Sun 8 May), the festival features some of Australia’s fi nest jazz talent with a program that literally has something for everybody. There’s even a special one hour workshop for children that concludes with a New Orleans inspired Second Line Parade from the Pavilion to the Courthouse.

Anthony Colfelt, President of the Berry Chamber of Commerce & Tourism notes “we are thrilled that the Sydney Improvised Music Association for staging this terrifi c jazz festival here for a second year. Update on the Buyback program- HOLLY LANDGREN -

When the Contractor running Shoalhaven waste depots went into receivership earlier this year, Council stepped in as an interim employer to ensure depots remained in operation until a more permanent solution could be reached. The major consequence was that the Buyback program (for bulky and / or useful reusable items) was cancelled. Other services remain unaffected, and the depot continues to accept recyclable items, including batteries, polystyrene and fl uorescent light tubes. While reusable items can still be dropped off at local depots, they are now only stored on site and then transported to the West Nowra or Ulladulla depot for sale. This seems to be a overly complicated system for items that would otherwise end up in landfi ll, and means there is nowhere in Berry to buy bulky secondhand items such as furniture, garden equipment, etc., which aren’t accepted by our Vinnies shop. The hour or more spent on a round trip to West Nowra is generally impractical for residents, who in the past were able to call into the local depot to look for useful secondhand items.A recent letter to the South Coast Register from a Barrengarry resident highlights the fact that it is not just our community missing out on this valuable resource. I contacted Shoalhaven Council to get an up-date on the program. David Hojem, the Waste Services Manager, responded that a review undertaken by Council late last year found that nine of the ten Recycling and Waste operations within the Shoal-haven area were not fi nancially sustainable, and that Council had to review operating costs. Council believes that the Buyback program diverts depot staff away from customer service for recycling and waste drop off, and exposes the Council to Work Health & Safety risks. The consolidation of the program to just two depots means smaller local depots will focus more on recovering other materials for recycling. As of 13 April (our publishing deadline) no decision has been made about the future of the Buyback program. Community consultation will be included in making the decision. If you feel that the program is of value to the local community and should be reviewed for restatement, let Council know. Email the General Manager at [email protected] and ask that any response to your email be copied to all Councilors, so that they are aware of community sentiment.

Can tourism and a fragile ecology coexist? I was prompted to ask this question in relation to our proximity to the National Park at Seven Mile Beach, after reading a recent letter to the Editor in the South Coast Register. The author wrote of his concern about the closure of a section of beach adjacent the Shoalhaven Heads camping grounds, where he had regularly been bringing his horses to exercise. The author suggested that the beach was cut in half, and that people were being denied pleasure because of unbalanced green infl uence. The author also stated that a tourist destination and a wildlife sanctuary are “mutually exclusive.” However, I believe the opposite to be true, and that the un-spoilt nature of our area is a big draw card for tourism.I rang Parks and Wildlife to get some information to better understand the situation. What I learned was that for the past nineteen years the National Parks & Wildlife Service has developed the Shorebird Recovery Program with a team of dedicated volunteers and a program has been established to protect shorebirds and help the recovery of their diminished numbers. Shorebirds don’t build nests; they create a simple “scrape” in the sand dunes and lay their well-camoufl aged eggs in this hollow. Traditionally, shorebirds would have had fewer predators, but the arrival of a growing population in coastal regions, along with dogs and foxes, have threatened the birds’ habitat and viability. By unfortunate coincidence, the birds nest between September and December, at the busiest time of the year for our beaches. If the female bird’s fi rst clutch of eggs is unsuccessful, she will lay a second clutch if early enough in the nesting season, meaning nesting areas may be closed to the public for a longer period. With over three thousand hours of time contributed this season to shorebird recovery activities, volunteers helped secure the sites of nesting shorebirds such as Hooded Plovers (less than 50 birds left in NSW, with 14 breeding pairs in the south Coast region producing 9 fl edglings this season), Pied Oystercatchers (26 nesting pairs, including 3 pairs along Seven Mile Beach) and migratory Little Terns (60 nesting pairs in the South Coast region, none of which successfully fl edged any chicks this season). This season two pairs of Pied Oystercatchers nested at the Shoalhaven Heads location, where a space approximately the size of a

TOURISM, SHOREBIRDS AND SEVEN MILE BEACH- HOLLY LANDGREN -

suburban block is protected. Of the two pairs of nesting at Shoalhaven Heads, only one chick fl edged, with the other viable chick taken by a fox. A third nesting pair of Pied Oystercatchers nested at the head of the Crooked River at Gerroa, again in a location adjacent a camping ground, and hardly an ideally protected spot. This is the fi rst record of Pied Oystercatchers nesting at this site. The fi rst clutch was unsuccessful, but the second resulted in one chick fl edged from two eggs laid. Local residents may aware of the program, and act accordingly around nesting sites. If you have friends visiting over the Christmas holidays, let them know about the program; ask that they avoid nesting areas by keeping away from the area above the high-tide line, comply with signage, and keep dogs out of the national park. Picking up rubbish during your beach walks also helps stop birds ingesting small pieces of plastic they mistake for food, or getting tangled in abandoned fi shing line. Berry is ideally situated to take advantage of the benefi ts of being so close to such a magnifi cent beach. Rarely crowded, generally clean, and a great escape on hot summer days. By better educating ourselves,

Photo: Sally Leonard

and being aware of the elements within the environment that need our protection like these little endangered shorebirds, we will maintain a valuable destination with strong biodiversity that continues to welcome tourism. I believe that the answer to my question above can be answered in the positive, as this beautiful photo, taken this summer at the Crooked River spit at Gerroa, shows. In the foreground, bottom left, are a Pied Oystercatcher and chick. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, the program is run from the National Parks offi ce in Ulladulla (4454 9500). It should be noted that Shoalhaven Council and the National Parks & Wildlife Service do not promote horse riding on beaches because of the potential for damage; NSW Forests have a list of forests where horse-riding is permitted, check under “Visit Forests: Activities” at forestrycorporation.com.au. Thanks to Greg Tedder, Simon Tedder, Sally Leonard, and the team at the Ulladulla offi ce for their time and help.Further reading on shorebirds at http://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/things-to-do/Volunteer-activities/shorebird-recovery-program-south-coast and birdlife.org.au

LANDCARE BERRY

Visit our pages at: www.landcare.nsw.gov.au/groups/berry-landcare for more on Berry Landcare and late changes to working bee details.

Foxground Sub-tropicalRainforest:There are many incredible natural features in the Berry surrounds. One not often encountered is the Subtropical Rainforest Remnants that are easily seen from Berry - the upper escarpment. The Illawarra Subtropical Rainforest (an Endangered Ecological Community) represents the Southern extremity of this subgroup of rainforests on the Eastern seaboard of Australia. The Subtropical Rainforest is a dense community of moisture loving trees, mainly evergreen, broad leaved species, usually arranged in several layers, and containing vines, fl owering trees, buttressed trunks and many other life forms. Berry Landcare together with Illawarra Landcare is gathering seeds from many plant communities around Berry for the creation of a seed bank. Recently a group of Landcarers visited the property “Bolwarra” in Foxground to collect seeds. This property through weed eradication has become one of the fi nest examples of ISR in the area. The name “Bolwarra” is taken from the native plant known also as Native Guava. The major part of the forest is on a steep rock strewn scree slope. The range of trees represented is typical and included Coachwood, Illawarra Socketwood (a threatened species), Myrtle Ebony, Sassafras, Koda, Pigeonberry Ash, Yellow Ash, Small Leaf Fig, Red Cedar, Birdlime Tree, Buff Hazelwood and Crab Apple. There were many plants including vines, ferns and fl axes totalling 232 native

plant species. One Kangaroo Vine was as thick as a cyclist’s thigh. Seeds found on the ground included Yellow Ash and Crab Apple. The forest has the feel of the interior of a French Cathedral. This experience is one of the exciting results of being involved in Landcare.

Weed and Native of Month:An erect shrub has recently grown on the side of the road adjacent to the turn off into Tindalls Lane from the highway. In spring its long, fl exible needle like bright green leaves were covered in sprays of yellow fl owers. Initially it was thought to be Spanish Broom, (Spartium junceum)” and it would have to go. On closer examination however it was obvious it was a native. “Native Trees and Shrubs of South East Australia” revealed it was Golden Spray (Viminaria juncea) often referred to as Native Broom. You will notice the similarity in the nomenclature (juneceum – juncea). The Latin junceum means “rush-like”, referring to the shoots, which resemblance to those of the rush genus Juncus. This beautiful plant is not common to the Berry area and has probable come from passing traffi c. Spanish Broom however has taken hold in many places with a Mediterranean climate and is regarded as a noxious invasive species in south eastern Australia.

And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”Come and join us at 7.00pm on the second Tuesday of the month at the Uniting Church Hall, 77 Albert Street, Berry. Please contact Kevin Watson on 02-4448-6267 or Craig Green on 0488-031-961 or email: [email protected]

Berry.org.au website:The Berry Chamber Committee runs and maintains the Berry.org.au website. This provides information for visitors and locals about shops, accommodation, restaurants & cafes and events in Berry and surrounds.Berry Map and Visitors Guide:The Committee also publishes an annual visitors’ guide and map of Berry. This is distributed free to visitors via local businesses, the Visitor Information Centre at Berry Music Centre, and brochure stands within the town. Newspaper AdvertisingWe take out strategic newspaper advertisements where we think they will be most effective. Recently, we negotiated a good deal with the Vision China Times newspaper, which has a large readership of people of Chinese origin living in Australia. Special features about the Berry Show, Berry generally, and the Berry Celtic Festival appeared in the newspaper over the summer. Television and radio advertisingWe regularly undertake advertising campaigns on local television stations such as WIN. We negotiate rates and timeslots and update vision and sound in the ads, to refl ect the main markets for Berry products and services. We have a number of different ‘styles’ of ad campaign, some of which focus on particularly local businesses, some on local events, and some on Berry more generally. We also put the ads on the Berry Chamber YouTube channel.Where appropriate, we also run paid radio advertising, which is usually focused on particular events.Social Media The Chamber committee runs two Facebook sites: the Berry, South Coast NSW Facebook page(which is aimed at external visitors and locals) and the Berry Chamber Facebook page (which is for member businesses and local residents). We keep these updated with news, events and opportunities. We also review the number of

One of the Berry Chamber’s main activities is promoting local businesses, and marketing Berry as a tourist destination.

We do this in a number of ways:hits, click throughs and shares we are getting on each site on a monthly basis, and respond appropriately.NewslettersThe Committee issues two regular newsletters: the fi rst for Berry Chamber of Commerce members, with updates on Chamber activities, invitations to events and details of opportunities for members; the second a tourist facing newsletter which is emailed to people who have signed up for it through our Facebook or website, or when visiting the Berry area. We will soon be putting forms in local shops to allow tourists to sign up to the newsletter more easily. How can you participate in this advertising and promotions?Advertising opportunities are offered to Chamber members on a regular basis, either for free or at reasonable rates and can also post news and special offers on the website and in the newsletters. They also have opportunities for feature advertisements in the visitors’ guide. All members receive a free listing on our berry.org.au website and have additional opportunities for featured advertising positions, free event listings and news articles. If you would like to fi nd out more about these opportunities, or membership, please contact our secretary Jean Sorensen, at [email protected] Positions VacantWe’d love a couple more committee members for the Berry Chamber of Commerce and Tourism committee, especially people with marketing and PR skills, to help with our newsletters and Facebook page. The position is voluntary, and involves a monthly meeting and some work in between. If you’re a Chamber member and are interested, please contact our President, Anthony Colfelt at [email protected]

Open Day at BerryFire Station26 Prince Alfred StreetFirefi ghters are encouraging people to visit Berry Fire Station for the Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) annual Open Day on Saturday, 21st May 2016.Berry Fire Station will be open from 10am to 2pm and families are encouraged to come along and meet their local fi refi ghters and learn more about fi re prevention.A range of free activities will be on offer, including fi refi ghting demonstrations, station tours and fi re safety presentations. Firefi ghters will also be able to provide advice on installing smoke alarms, changing smoke alarm batteries and preparing a home fi re escape plan.Children will be able to see fi re engines and fi refi ghting equipment up close, which is always one of the highlights of this much-anticipated day.Station Commander Jim Abbott said: “With winter approaching, Open Day is a timely opportunity to talk to the experts about home fi re safety. Winter is the worst time of the year for home fi res, with 60 per cent of all house fi res occurring in the cooler months of May to September.”Station Commander Abbott added that the joint FRNSW/GIO online home fi re safety audit was one of the best ways of assessing home fi re awareness and identifying the risks throughout the home. Go to http://www.homefi resafetyaudit.com.au/ to see how your home rates.“Head over to Berry Fire Station on Open Day and talk to our fi refi ghters face-to-face about simple safety tips you can use to ensure you and your family escape a fi re quickly and safely,” Station Commander Abbott said.

It’s exciting to see so much community enthusiasm for the Berry Estate Trails concept. With nearly 800 ‘likes’ on the Berry Estate Trails Project Facebook page in the fi rst week alone , the support for the trails concept is quickly growing. But like anything worthwhile, there is much to be done to bring this fantastic idea to life. Here’s an update on progress, and how you can show your much needed support. The goal of the Berry Estate Trails is to give locals and tourists alike, the chance to enjoy the beautiful local environment and connect the communities of Berry, Gerroa, Gerringong, Kiama, Shoalhaven Heads, Bomaderry, Fox Ground and Kangaroo Valley. The trails will provide a safe, mostly ‘off road’ alternative to explore the area without the need for a car.The entire project will see approximately 200km of dedicated, linked trails, allowing users to undertake short trips of around 5 km up to all day adventures. The network will include a number of trail types which consider things like the location, environment, ease of access, user safety etc., balanced with a need to minimize cost of construction and on-going maintenance. One of the most exciting trails will be the ‘rail with trail’ route, where the trail will run inside the existing rail corridor, between Bomaderry and Gerringong. As it runs alongside the rail line, the route will be fl at, and easy to run or cycle along. The location of the rail line also allows numerous connections to the roads

What you need to know about the Berry Estate Trails“BEST IDEA EVER” Project Facebook Page

that cross the rail corridor, allowing local residents a safe alternative to travelling into town without using their cars. The trail will be separated from the rail line inside a purpose built ‘corridor’ established using appropriate fencing to provide separation from the rail line. This would give users 26kms to roam from the country to ocean, past restored colonial era rail buildings, such as the Berry Station Master’s house, and the historic Harley Hill cemetery. A detailed proposal for submission to the NSW Government and Shoalhaven Council is currently being prepared. This will include detailed maps, feasibility analysis, community benefi ts and economic considerations. We expect the submission work to take approximately six months; with a goal to submit the fi nal version around September 2016.To access the required funding and approvals from the various levels of government, we need to demonstrate that the community support the project. If you, or anyone you know would benefi t from the trails, please show your support by:Attending the community forums in Berry, Kiama, Shoalhaven Heads, Gerroa, Gerringong and/or Bomaderry. We will publish the dates when we will be presenting to these forums via the Facebook page and the (Berry Estate Trails website – launch end April at berryestatetrails.org.au).Like, share, show your support and ask questions via the Berry Estate Trails Project Facebook page. We’ll continue to keep you updated via the Town Crier, local publications and more as we progress. Until then, trail dreaming…

2016 has been a great year for Knit with Love in Berry. If you pass by on the verandah at St Luke’s Hall, any Friday between 1 and 3pm you will hear much happy and animated chatter, as about 20+ ladies knit or crochet for the needy of the world.

One of our main projects is to support “Wraps with Love” with their slogan, “Cold humanity is our concern; people caring about other people.”There are millions of people in the world suffering extreme cold. In 1992 Wrap with Love began with the idea to help as many as possible by providing warm Wraps to ward off hypothermia. In the past 23 years they have sent more than 400,000 Wraps to people in over 75 countries, including Australia, with the help of many hardworking and generous volunteers. For example, some were sent to Fiji in the aftermath of Cyclone Winston earlier this year.

Welcome back to all our lovely children and their families for a fun-packed second term at preschool. We wrapped up Term 1 with a few more exciting and educational activities, including a science show. Our most recent visitor from Shoalhaven Zoo was Tristan, who told us all about the wriggly, squiggly world of bugs. We learnt lots of buggy facts and the children were in hysterics when Tristan ate a worm! It’s always an entertaining session with the educators from Shoalhaven Zoo.We fi nished the term with an excursion to Berry Public School on the Friday to take part in their school walkathon. We enjoyed taking part with the big kids and seeing the school that many of us will be heading off to next year. It was a wonderful way to end the term. Finally, it is with great excitement that we announce our brand-new initiative for this coming term. The older preschool children will have the opportunity to learn French! We have been accepted into a government initiative called the ELLA Program, in which they are trialling the benefi ts of learning another language in the year before school. We will be using technology such as iPad apps and extended learning activities across all our curriculum areas. Au revoir!

Leaping into learning for Term 2 at Berry Preschool

Just one 25cm square provides one twenty-eighth of warmth, and collectively, twenty-eight assembled squares create one whole warm and sheltering Wrap. Our group encourages knitters to join us on a Friday for a social time together, but we also accept completed wraps from the community, adding them to our wraps which are transported up the line to Sydney.Winter will soon be upon us, and now is the time to bring out your needles (4.00mm). All welcome, and bring a ball of 8 ply yarn. Patterns are provided. Contact people: Lyn on 4464 3651 or Niesje on 4464 2558.

VIEW club members raise funds for The Smith Family, which is a national charity helping young Australians in need, to get the most out of their education so they can create better futures for themselves. The most effective combination of support comes from the following:• Financial support for school essentials and

extra-curricular activities. These help students fi t in and participate, and build self-confi dence

• Targeted support from a Learning for Life Coordinator which provides emotional support and encouragement and connects students to local learning opportunities

• The Smith Family’s Learning and Mentoring programs. These result in improved literacy and numeracy skills, and improved motivations and aspirations.

Overall, this support delivers improved, long-term educational outcomes. An extract from a story by Mitchell says: In Australia, a uniform is our identity for the fi rst years at school. I just wanted to be like other kids and having a uniform was the fi rst step to that. Having a sponsor really helped me to be like my classmates. It also meant we could afford to buy stationery and books. This gave me confi dence to learn and be happy. Mitchell is now in his third year of a teaching degree. He continues to be supported by a Smith Family sponsor. Please look up the VIEW club website www.view.org.au for more wide-ranging information.Members participated in the Anzac Day march and wreath-laying ceremony, on April 25. It is always a sobering occasion where we remember those who did not come home from war.Our next coffee morning will be at Hedgehogs on Thursday May 5 at 10.30 a.m, with our next meeting at Berry Bowling Club on Wednesday May 18, 6.30 for 7.00 p.m. dinner.

As we commence our second term at mainly music we also celebrate our 5th Birthday for the group. We have seen many families grow and having children move onto school and pre-school. Then we have the new babies come along and join our happy band of music lovers. We are always pleased to have new families come along and become part of the group. Our children this year are quite a bit younger than previous times and we have been able to make choices of younger types of programme that suit the children and the age group that attends. Our playtime after the music session has been enhanced with thelarge covered area and the deck which allows us protection from all weather conditions. Mainly music is open to all families and children under school age, we would love you to come along and become part of the group. Cost per family $5.00 per session located at Berry Community Church, 8 Schofi elds Lane.

The following statement was made when our club formed 16 years ago and still applies “Our aims are simple: to provide a friendly afternoon of Duplicate play where friendships and partnerships in bridge may be formed, to welcome visitors, help in providing partners and all in a non-profi t making manner.” So if you are a Bridge player visiting Berry perhaps wondering how to fi ll in a Saturday afternoon but you need a Bridge partner then please phone Lee Ann Roberts on 44642742 we would be happy for you to join us. We meet at the Masonic Village Recreational Hall in Albany Lane Berry every Saturday and players are asked to be there 12.45pm for a 1.00pm start. The Annual Inter Club Bridge Competition between Bowral, Berry, Goulburn, Kiama and Southern Highlands commenced on the 13th April when Southern Highlands Club hosted the fi rst game. Our representatives were Margaret Ann Crossley, Maggie Elderfi eld, Lorraine Gilmore and Helen Thornbury as the fi rst team and Harriet Champain, Winsome Kish, Lorraine Penhall and Peter Muller the second team. The event runs from April to October the fi nals played at Kiama where the overall winners are announced and presented with the perpetual Trophy.Participants at these sessions can expect a friendly day as they mix socially and meet up with new and regular competitors over a welcome cuppa and later during lunch but once the game starts there is a competitive atmosphere as each player concentrates to do well. Team games are approached more cautiously with bidding contracts and players take fewer risks in play as they are trying to defeat just one team at a time. Scoring also differs from the usual pairs game which makes it interesting in itself. Whether one plays social or competitive Bridge it is a good exercise for the brain and provides the opportunity to enjoy the friendship of others.

Walk-A-Fun-A-ThonAt the end of the term, our students raised a whooping $8611 at their Walk-A-Fun-A-Thon! A huge thank you to every student for their wonderful efforts and to everyone who supported and sponsored them. The money raised will be used to directly support student learning, so we are all very proud of this fantastic effort.

Kitchen GardenOver the past few years, we have been gradually building a new teaching and learning space at Berry Public School. Thanks to a NSW Environmental Heritage Trust grant, a large donation from the Berry Garden Club and the skills of the Berry Men’s Shed, the Kitchen Garden is nearly complete. The project has been student-led, every step along the way, from the early design sessions with students researching soil quality, dreaming up fun features such as creek beds, ‘Peter Rabbit’ gates, scarecrows and caves, and working alongside local farmers and landscape designers who provided technical advice; to shovelling 6 tonnes of soil and planting out the new garden beds. Every Monday and Thursday lunchtime, a community volunteer opens up the shed, turns on the hand pump and students put on their high-vis worker bee vests to play in and tend the garden. It’s been exciting to see this project come to life. Next time you’re walking along Clarence St, have a peek over the fence and see how the garden is growing.

Berry Public School has had a jammed pack Term 1, and it has been amazing to see the students, parents and wider community getting right behind our P&C!

Waste Free WednesdaysWaste Free Wednesdays are proving to be a big hit, generating a lot of discussion amongst the students. It is wonderful to hear the children talking about composting and reusing containers. Remember – if it can be eaten, refi lled or re-used, or composted – you have a waste free lunch!

The Garden Club’s proposal to establish a new park in Berry on residual RMS land has brought back memories of a similar project in Apex Park. This now verdant triangle, originally part of John Hay’s estate, was just a small paddock in the late 1950s when the Apex Club sought permission from Council to establish a park there. By 1965 planting was completed, with a Swamp Cypress, Taxodium distichum, added by the Garden Club in 1979 to mark an “Alexander Berry Festival”. This deciduous conifer, which holds its dull orange autumn foliage well into winter and whose roots form knobbly “knees”, is now one of the notable trees of Berry. Since 1990 Apex Park has been used as the headquarters for the annual Berry Gardens Festival. When it was redesigned in the late 1990s, the Garden Club donated funds for both the rotunda, placed next to the Swamp Cypress, and the bridge. The Club later planted more trees, including the Cherry Walk, and installed benches and tables. You may have spotted other unusual trees in Berry. The car park behind the newsagent is shaded by a giant Quercus virginiana, an evergreen oak native to North America. Believed to be another memorial planting, this oak is a silent reminder that the area was once the site of Berry’s fi rst School of Arts. In front of St Patrick’s Catholic Church is a Variegated Queensland Box, Lophostemon confertus ‘Variegatus’. Unfortunately the beautiful cream and green leaf variation is being lost but the cinnamon brown trunk and branches are splendid. This year’s Gardens Festival will allow you to wonder at a Dawn Redwood, Metasequoia glyptostroboides in Garden 7. Another deciduous conifer, this native of China is the only living member of a genus which, before its rediscovery in 1944, could only be described from fossils. ‘The Weird and the Wonderful’ is this month’s talk by retired entomologist Dr Keith Houston, owner of another of the 2016 Festival’s tree-fi lled gardens. Dr Houston will show us some of those ‘other things’ in the garden, some often only seen at night. All too many are considered not worthy of a space in the garden, but they have a function. The images shown will surprise, they may also delight! Visitors are most welcome to join us for this informative presentation. Our next meeting will be held in St Luke’s Church Hall in Princess St on Tuesday, 17 May at 7.30pm. Zonta Empowering Women Through Service and Advocacy

SALE OF THE YEARhas been and gone and was, as usual, a great success. Yes, the famous Zonta Pre-Loved Clothing Sale brought bargain-loving ladies and men to buy from a huge range of high-quality clothing generously donated by friends from far and wide and we thank them most sincerely for their kindness. We also thank members of Berry Rotary for their assistance by ‘spruiking’ the event as they sold tickets for their chocolate wheel. Although the weather was not as cheery as it might have been, and market attendee numbers a little down on previous years, we nonetheless raised a substantial amount of money to go towards the buying of components to make Birthing Kits.

AND BIRTHING KITSwill be on the agenda later in the year – around October – when a community get-together will be held to assemble and pack these life-saving little miracles. For the cost of only $3.50 per kit (barely the price of a cup of coffee) the club always welcomes both fi nancial contributions plus hands-on efforts when the day for assembling is announced. Watch This Space!

AND OUR ON-GOING GOOD WORKSinclude more making of breast cushions and drainage bags which are given to each and every woman or man or who has undergone breast surgery in a local hospital. So there will be another big effort by the club when we get together to cut, stitch, stuff and pack our little gems on Friday, 29th April, at the home of Margot Claringbold. If anyone would like to give some time to this worthy project, if for only an hour or two, please ring Margot on 4464 1441 for further information. We welcome all comers, whether a seamstress or not, there’s a job for everyone!

EXCITEMENT RISESThe new Zonta Club in Goulburn is fast becoming a reality, with the Zonta Club of Berry proudly sponsoring the chartering on Saturday,14th May. With a grand dinner to be held at the Goulburn Workers’ Club, attended by many Zontians from around the state, and the chartering being ‘sung in’ by the Berry Zonta Choir, it will surely be a night to remember. We have been reliably informed that this new club is the only one to charter in the country this year! A special occasion indeed.

COFFEE AND READING GO TOGETHERdon’t they?? So, our monthly morning get-together will be held on Thursday, 19st May at Our Book Shop at 10am, and the monthly book sale will be on Friday, 20th May in Broughton Walk. Donations of books are always welcome and may be dropped off on the day, ready to please another avid reader.

AND DINNERMonthly dinner meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday at The Coachhouse Restaurant, Berry Hotel, 6.30 for 7pm. Please book with Mary Seelis on 4464 1191.

VOLUNTEERS can you, will you, would you be able to do an extra day? We have days without helpers but if you are able to do that extra day we may be able to work our extras into working together. Please if you can, ring JOHN to work out times. With all this new technology, have you seen our NSW Meals on Wheels Facebook Page? Take a look; read the stories of many deliverers and our clients. We are looking forward to around August when Meals on Wheels NSW Celebrates our cause with a ‘Cuppa for a Cause Fundraising event’ which we will celebrate with them with our cuppa.State Conference this year will be held in October up in beautiful Coffs Harbour. .Meals on Wheels is more than JUST A MEAL. Berry MOW is working towards this as we move forward to big and better options.

Easter has come and gone and so has a vast amount of chocolate. More than a few horses may have swivelled their heads around (as horses do) when their riders climbed aboard weighing a little extra. I am sure horses have a built in set of scales. We once had a pony who wouldn’t tolerate a rider over 50 kilograms and deposited many foolhardy souls onto the turf to make his point. Horses certainly do have an accurate sense of time. Anyone who is fi ve minutes late feeding their horse knows that. I wonder what the BRC members horses feel about how busy they have been lately and whether they are, like mine, marching briskly away to hide when they see the horse fl oat being packed.Berry Riding Club had a very full calendar of events over Easter with dressage, show jumping and cross country clinics available and very well attended. This year we have already had several Dressage skills development days with Carolyn James as coach and riders are very happy with the progress of their horses under her guidance. Ashley Adams has been conducting successful jumping and cross country clinics for those who like to get airborne with a horse. I was once asked why riders kept having lessons. “Once you can ride why would you bother?” the person asked. I explained that riding is a discipline which more than any other, demands a set of experienced eyes on the ground. It is above all a partnership; never perfect but always open to improvement. I said that even the most elite riders regularly submit to intensive coaching and that is an important aspect of their success. No matter how experienced, capable or successful you are, a rider must be humble enough to accept correction and coaching. It takes hard work, commitment, dedication and courage to be an effective rider and the passion that fuels equestrian

sport can be seen at any event from a local gymkhana to the glamour of an event like the recent Sydney CDI Dressage event. It is exciting to watch the elite riders and horses performing at their peak but I am sure many of the competitors at our recent club Dressage Championship gained personal pleasure and a sense of achievement at their own performance and are planning for future competitions. As always you can fi nd out more by following us on Facebook or visiting: www.berryridingclub.com.au

More details in the next Town Crier. Then the next busy day will be the Celtic Day to be held in May at the Berry Showground. Exciting News: Berry CWA will be hosting their fi rst evening meeting on 12th May 6-6:30 start. The Evening Meetings will be held on the second Thursday of the month on a quarterly basis. Paula Smith, ICU nurse spe-cialist at Shoalhaven District Hospital, and director of Mercy Ships Australia, will be the guest speaker. It is bound to be an inspiring talk. Please come and join us. There has been an interesting exchange of information about Mongolia. Their traditional housing is a ger, a tent–like wooden framed structure covered in woollen felt, which is easy to pack up and be moved on. This round building is for eating, sleeping and living in. The Mongolians enjoy a variety of fare. Following is a short list of foods they enjoy:Horehog is a hearty stew like meat dish, catering for at least 5 people.Boohog is a traditional dish, made of Borlon, a 2 year old goat cooked with hot stones put inside it. Marmot Boodog is eaten at the opening of the hunt for marmots. This tender, tasty dish tastes like duck!Buuz is basically a meat and pastry dish with many varieties.Guriltai shol is a simple and healthy noodle soup which is usually followed by a milk tea and a Boortsog, a biscuit deep fried in hot oil. And so to bed! This all sounds very exotic but we will have an opportunity to experience some of their cuisine at our International Day Luncheon on 15th May.

While mentioning the subject of food it should be acknowledged that the CWA Tea Rooms at the Royal Easter Show did a sterling job. The volunteers, including two Berry CWA ladies, worked tirelessly and went home footsore. They did not quite make the record of 2015 (49,152 scones) but were fairly close, with 48,629 scones. These sweetmeats covered with jam and cream were named “the best thing at the Show.”April saw a few activities that will have been completed by the time of printing:Women Walk the World: On 27th April a number of folk would have walked the Berry Oval. The Associated Country Women of the

World connects and supports women and communities worldwide, to raise funds, raise ACWW’s image, and promote the organisation. This was a great opportunity to exercise, chat, and then share in a cuppa in the CWA rooms.Youth Week Shoalhaven Cup Cake decorating competition. Berry CWA supported this event held on Tuesday 12th April. Visitors were treated to quite an amazing array of decorated cupcakes, beautiful and imaginatively done. The contestants had worked very hard to make this day one to be remembered. We are looking forward to next year’s Cup Cake Decorating Day.

BERRY MEN’S SHED

This year the Berry Men’s Shed will be awarding four scholarships to the value of $4,000 to schools and colleges in the Shoalhaven area. This follows the successful launch last year at Shoalhaven High School with two winners both receiving $500 each. The schools are asked to select students who they feel meet and exceed the high standards and principles set by the schools. “Last year was our fi rst scholarship programme and it was very rewarding to stand before 850 students at Shoalhaven High School and present the awards to the students,” said Shed secretary Richard Wiseman. The four scholarships are being funded from revenue derived from the Shed and The Berry Uniting Church. The colleges that have been accepted into the 2016 programme include TAFE Illawarra at Bomaderry, Nowra High School, Bomaderry High School and Shoalhaven High School.Last week’s Seniors Week was a great success at the Shed with a large number of visitors from other Sheds as well as plenty of local people. “It gave us the opportunity to show members of the community what we make and how we go about putting projects together” said President Grahame Hepper.Last week we had a visit from 13 university students from Canberra University who are studying Occupational Health and Therapy. It gave the students the opportunity to speak to our members and obtain an understanding of how we operate. We have lots of items for sale so feel free to pop in and have a look and a cup of tea.

Berry Leprosy Mission Auxiliary Reading the latest KIT article put out by the Leprosy Mission Australia we take so much for granted in our own country. If we run out of food we just pop down to the local supermarket and buy usually more that we need for the time.I am referring to a man called Murugan who was without food and water for days. The Leprosy mission Trust India rescue team found him stranded in a shed where he used to live; he had been without food and water for days. Murugan recounts many of the diffi culties he had to face:“My parents died when I was a child. No one took care of me. I was diagnosed with leprosy when I was 10. By that time, both my legs became anaesthetic and my left hand clawed.”Murugan learnt bicycle repair and how to fi x punctured tubes. When the fl oods came his hut fi lled with water and he sat on his old table and prayed for the rains to stop. An ulcer on his leg became infected due to the dirty fl oodwater.Relief workers would occasionally pass and give him food packets. Eventually the rain stopped and the water receded.Relief workers came from TLM trust India Your support of the PARTI project meant that when disaster struck, teams were ready to mobilise. You gave food and other essential items, Peter Joseph of the Leprosy mission trust says Murugan needs a house, a shop, and equipment to run his business. He needs medical treatment for his ulcer. If not gangrene may develop , it will lead to amputation. We can assist people in situations overseas, this is just one of the cases we hear about through the work of the mission our next street stall will be on Saturday the 27th June in Broughton Court.

THE AUSTRALIAN DECORATIVE AND FINE ARTS SOCIETY (ADFAS)Recently, a number of ADFAS members and friends enjoyed two extra planned events. Firstly, a Welcome to New Members, held at the Grange, provided an opportunity for forging closer friendships within our community. Our second event was a fi lm to raise funds for an ADFAS community project. The occasion was rounded off with a lunch of delicious salad boxes, iced tea and a mouth-watering selection of sweet treats. What a glorious morning it turned out to be!Our guest lecturer for May, David Rosier, will be offering two presentations – the Thursday lecture at the Berry Uniting Church Hall, and the following morning’s Half Focus Day at Nowra Players Theatre, Bomaderry. David’s lecture topic will focus on the Ultimate Renaissance Ruler, Emperor Qianlong (1735-1796), spanning a Golden Age in China’s history. Qianlong, considered the greatest of Qing Emperors, was an exceptional scholar, collector, curator and appraiser of Fine Arts and Antiques. The Half Focus Day lecture will consider formal, semi-formal and informal costume during the 17th to 20th century in the Court and High Society in China. David will focus on the robes for the ladies of the Court and the highly decorative accessories worn by them. The venue for Thursday 19 May: The Berry Uniting Church Hall at 7.30pm. Hello again! The year is once again fl ying by… I hope you are all enjoying the cooler nights and the beautiful Autumn days. We really are very blessed to live in such an amazing part of the world. At Graham Park where Berry Community Church currently resides, we have a lovely outlook onto the surrounding hills of Berry from the rear of our buildings. We can sit out there and pretend all that ugly roadwork is not really happening. It will be wonderful when it is all completed. Out the back and under the trees is where we recently held our annual Easter Egg Hunt for the children of the church and local community. I had lots of fun helping set up and hiding the eggs and the children had a wonderful time fi nding and sharing them. The Easter Egg Hunt was run as part of our

celebration and remembrance of one of the most signifi cant events on our calendar as people of faith. The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The local drama group, led by thirteen year old Berry girl Ella Munro, performed during the celebrations. There are some wonderfully talented and very funny children who performed and they all gave a great account of themselves. The drama group meets at Graham Park fortnightly on Friday afternoons during the school term. There were also some musical items and singing that was led by some of our Mainly Music team that meets at the church each Tuesday morning of the school term. Mainly Music is a program for preschool children and their parents or carers that uses music to engage with the children. It is a great

social time with everyone sharing morning tea and a play time out on the back deck after the program. Many of our programs take a break during the school holidays but there are still lots of things happening every Sunday. There is also a group of men who meet on the second Wednesday of the month at 12.30pm for lunch and social darts, cards and snooker. On the forth Wednesday they often have a guest speaker also. This time is open to men of all ages and newcomers are always welcome. If you want to know more about what happens at Graham Park check out our website berrycommunitychurch.org I hope to cross paths with you soon. May God richly bless you, Gordon.
