O ne month and only eleven more to go and no impeachment in

sight! But, I want to look back on last year and give thanks and

praise to some very deserving members of our club: Kiwanian of the

Year Jeff Smelser; Hixson fellows Debbie Knotts and Randy Zook; and

Ginny Grant, our Community Service Award winner. These individuals

are some of the hardest working people in our club so please thank them

THE MOTTO

In 1920, something important crystallized for Kiwanis; something that inspired Roe Fulkerson, the gifted editor of the Kiwanis magazine, to propose two simple words—“We Build”—as the Kiwanis motto. It was the coining of the Motto, after five years of painful and exhilarating growth, that put Ki-wanis into its stride. Then in 2005, during the 90th anniversary year of Kiwanis, dele-gates to the International Convention voted to adopt a new motto, “Serving the Children of the World,” to emphasize the primary fo-cus of Kiwanis service over those nine dec-ades and make a commitment for the years to come.

* WWW.KCOW.ORG IS NOW LIVE ONLINE *

T hanks to the efforts of Bill Nordman, the Kiwanis

Club Of Winchester is now easier to access on the

internet.

The Club’s root address, “www.winchesterkiwanis.org” has

proven cumbersome to type (or remember) when trying to

visit our website. By using the acronym of our club’s name

(KCOW) you can just type in “www.kcow.org” and you

will be directed to our regular website. Bill was able to re-

serve the abbreviated web address, and by setting up a

“redirect” command, anyone typing in the new web ad-

dress will be forwarded to our usual Home page. (The

original website does not go away.)

In addition to being shorter to type, the new URL is easier to remember, easier to articu-

late and true to our organization’s name “Kiwanis Club of Winchester. (Hopefully, we will

no longer be confused with the Winchester, Kentucky club!)

We will begin two processes: 1) Inserting the URL into any links we have already set up on

our website and, 2) We will set up new Club email addresses that use the “kcow.org” ex-

tension (i.e. [email protected]). Stay tuned for more information about this effort, as some

of our membership may have to update their email address books for correspondence pur-

poses.

Save the Dates! (and then Show Up to Help!)

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR MEMBERS

N ovember’s Featured Kiwanian is: GEORGE CALEY

Birthplace: North Dakota

Favorite books: Spy thrillers by Tom Clancy

Education: Dickinson State University / Medical College of Virginia

Favorite place to visit: Berlin

George was born in North Dakota leaving when he joined the Navy

after high school graduation. It is while being stationed at Virginia

Beach that he fell in love with Virginia and decided he would re-

turn. After leaving the Navy he went back to North Dakota to Dickinson State University and

earned degrees in Biology and Secondary Education. Student teaching led George to under-

stand that a teaching career was not what he wanted to do for his life. He obtained a job in

pharmaceutical sales in Roanoke for a few years where he met many doctors and hospital

administrators. This job was what led him to become interested in how hospitals are run and

led to his passion in hospital administration. George earned a Masters in Hospital Admin-

istration at the Medical College of Virginia and stayed in the area working at the Community

Hospital of Roanoke Valley. After a few years, he had the wonderful opportunity to move to

Winchester as the Assistant Administrator at our hospital. He spent the rest of his career in

Winchester, moving up to become the President of the Winchester Medical Center. Even

though George has retired, he stays very active helping many worthwhile organizations in

our area.

George has spent many years sharing his time and talents in service to others. He joined the

Kiwanis Club of Winchester in 1979 in order to stay involved in the community and connect-

ed with a major civic club. Of course, his leadership skills led to becoming the President of

Kiwanis in the 80s and a Hixson fellow. George’s community service does not stop at Kiwa-

nis. He is also involved as a board member at the Timber Ridge School and is a founding

board member and currently the treasurer for Blue Ridge Hospice. Previously, George has

been the chair for the Winchester Medical Center Foundation, the capital campaign chairman

for the Red Cross, and the President of the Chamber.

George is not “all work and no play.” He has done a wonderful job ensuring he has a positive

work-life balance with his wife and children. George and his wife, Linda, have a son that

lives in DC, a daughter living in Fayetteville, NC, and two grandsons. George and Linda love

to travel and have been to so many fascinating and exotic locales over the past 40 years:

throughout Europe, Egypt, Morocco, South America, and the Galapagos Islands. They have

just returned from Africa where they were just feet away from a leopard and lions on safaris

in Zimbabwe and Botswana (see pics above). Of all the places George has visited, Berlin is

his absolute favorite. He enjoyed the museums, palaces, history, the wall, and even attend-

ed an interesting, chaotic New Year’s Eve celebration. George is also an avid golfer and has

achieved the rank of Life Master in bridge.

Kiwanis Club of Winchester is successful because of its many volunteer members who give so freely of their time and effort.

THANKS FOR BEING A MEMBER OF KIWANIS CLUB, GEORGE!

individually—and yourselves also. Man, what a great installation banquet we had! Thank

you Pat Snapp (and those helping her) for the beautifully decorated room, tasty meal and a

great evening; also Mr. Tj O’Connor for his wit and humor and for being a great emcee for

the evening. We also honored Doug Butler for 70 years of perfect attendance.

There is a lot we all can be proud of. We raised over $80,000.00 for our Community with

our Semi-Annual Pancake Days. With that in mind, think of the service work we provide to

area students through our Service Leadership Programs by sponsoring Key Clubs, Builders

Clubs and K-Kids.

Now, look at some of the service work we provide: Adopt-A-Highway, Salvation Army

bell ringing, food sorting, Bright Futures meal packing, Stuff the Bus, Camp Fantastic, and

our annual Christmas Party!

We had a great year and I look forward to working with everyone to help provide for

those in need in our community and around the world.

-John
