In the new geography of streetwear, a global fashion is emerging, a pluralistic mixture, where the intertwining of trajectories between creativity and manufacturing distracts attention from the purpose of “established” fashion to increasingly turn its gaze to roads less travelled and yet to be explored, with a plethora of interesting new brands such as the Latvian Qoo Qoo or Lonely Hearts from New Zealand who earn their own space in this new issue of KiT. The focal point of style moves, and with it, a different way of thinking about ethnic comes about: if fashion is synonymous with change and innovation, ethnic is a tradition which remains unchanged over time, the legacy of how other ethnic groups dress, ‘Other’ in the broadest sense. Garments like the Japanese kimono escape from their rituals to enter in their own right into the ever-changing world of global fashion, as shown in the new StudioPretzel collection and, on the same wave, we witness the kaleidoscopic experiments by Tom & Hawk, whose knitwear manages to enthusiastically mix Peruvian textile motifs with that certain boldness of ‘80s pop. Open to the influences of countries in the developing world and different cultures, ethical fashion can be trendy and also socially beneficial and environmentally friendly. From a niche topic, this theme has become increasingly heard and some exponents of the eco-friendly scene in Berlin tell us that with their collections such as streetwear, they are taking on a leading role in the promotion of responsible consumption, mainly due to the prevailing trend of recycling and the re-using of garments. Indeed, it will be the nostalgia of a time when everything seemed more beautiful, there will be some reservations about the future, but the present has a vintage heart. Well-known at the headquarters of Dockers, where the archive of historical pieces, looked after by Lynn Downey is a source of continuous reinterpretations in free style for future collections, with the understanding that the clothes remain the best guardians of the memory of a style.

Encountering the work of Magdalena Kapinos is one of those cases in which the eye and the heart thank you for the preference accorded to them as being the main organs involved. The illustrator and graphic designer maintains her Polish homeland as a basis for her work, the human body and the exploration of the emotional condition are the most frequent subjects of her artistic expression. Each one of her illustrations strikes and moves, initially, for the presence of the main figure and the richness of the colours; but you do not have time to fix your gaze on the first or record the frequencies of the seconds, when straightaway your eye focuses on particulars that have not yet been caught: the backgrounds tell a story in themselves. They are graphic characteristics - hands that perform an action, or become close to each other; animals that complete the picture, everyday objects - that add a touch of uniqueness to the work of this young artist who is already difficult to categorise under any ready-made definition. It is sour but sweet, her figures seem to have just disembarked from a past of classical beauty, yet they are perfectly immersed in their era; often depicted as a single entities, they transmit their emotions sometimes with a single glance, others communicating through a mobile phone or stroking the dog they are holding in their arms. People, first of all; hyper-real young faces with semi realistic bodies that express the full range of human emotions. Magdalena is only 23 years old, it springs to mind that the party has just begun.

The love of colour, a sense of humour and positive thinking are constants in the work of young designer Julian Zigerli. After completing his studies at the UDK in Berlin, in 2010, this Swiss neo-talent returned home to found the brand that bears his name. The title of the A/W 2013-14 collection, “Happy Tears” refers to “those moments in life when you are so overwhelmed with joy that it makes you cry.” To communicate the idea and concepts that are the basis of his creations, the young winner of the “Federal Design Prize Switzerland 2012” chooses to use the complex and innovative language of the fashion film, that fuses the aesthetics of fashion with the narrative of the cinema. The short film directed by Martin Monk and shot in New York between the Empire Hotel and Prospect Park follows the gaze of the actor Alan Cumming that is lit up and full of wonder on a path that will lead him to leave the city behind and find himself as a young man in a bare forest. The initial close-up on the cornea sprinkled with the capillaries of the protagonist, announces the theme of veining, which is the leitmotiv of the prints chosen for trousers, jackets, raincoats, sweaters and suits: a soft and practical casualwear (see the jacket convert into a backpack) that borders in sporty. Among the dominant colours, white veined with red, orange, blue, yellow and brown, while pink and bonbonnière blue peep out. A curiosity: the thing waving about on Cumming’s hand is iron filings moving due to a magnet. And the inspiration of Julian Zigerli has been made into a brooch!
giacconi, impermeabili, maglie e tute:
un casualwear morbido e pratico (vedi la
giacca trasformabile in zaino) che sconfina
nell’abbigliamento sportivo. Fra i colori dominanti,
bianco venato di rosso, arancio, blu, giallo
e marrone, fanno capolino il rosa e l’azzurro
bomboniera.

There is also a little bit of Italy in the young German brand Tom & Hawk. The sisters Annette and Susanne Wirz from Aalen founded the brand in August 2011, uniting the tiny sparks that for some time had been wandering into their creative minds to create the fire of colours and patterns that is today Tom & Hawk. Susanne comes from a knitwear environment, and as a designer and product manager has satisfied her thirst for innovation at the font of the best teachers of Italian knitwear. It is with them that she creates the first samples for the new brand. The spirit of observation from Annette, who while working in retail realised how hard it is to find electrifying collections for young men, does the rest. And so comes a collection that is entirely made in Italy, new and yet inspired by the ethnic patterns of the past and the vibrant ‘80s. In the A/W 2013-14 by Tom & Hawk, knitwear reigns supreme, but the collection also includes jackets, accessories and shirts. The latter, in Portuguese flannel, give that air of the lumberjack, so suitable for lambswool coats with Aztec motifs. The cms knitting machine, capable of implementing any design, a technique that was forgotten during the rule of plain sweaters, was rediscovered. The palette includes shades of blue combined with dark red and shades of yellow, with each one trying to dilute the other thanks to the camouflage effect of the new patterns. Jackets and trousers of the same pattern can be worn together, in an all-over outfit, or as individual pieces that catch the eye and amuse.
completamente made in Italy, nuova eppure ispirata
‘80. Nell’A/I 2013-14 di Tom & Hawk la maglia regna
sovrana, ma la collezione include anche giacche,
accessori e camicie. Queste ultime, in flanella
aztechi. La macchina per maglieria cms, capace di
realizzare qualsiasi disegno e dimenticata durante
la dominazione della tinta unita, viene riscoperta
e valorizzata. La tavolozza include toni del blu
combinati a rosso scuro e ombre di giallo,
e ognuno gioca a diluirsi nell’altro grazie
all’effetto camouflage dei nuovi motivi. Giacche
e pantaloni con lo stesso pattern possono
indossarsi insieme, in tenuta all-over, oppure come
pezzi singoli che catturano l’occhio e divertono.

creating clothes that are not limited to a single season and will last over time. The 100% natural silk gives life to the range of clothes, including chemises and nightgowns; high quality cotton makes up the skater dress and sweatshirts; leggings can be wool, polyester or viscose. The collection is called Botanika, and celebrates the simple yet meaningful beauty of northern flowers. In accordance with the ancestral traditions of the place, every flower, every plant possesses a miraculous power. QooQoo shows it in every detail, with the precision of the design and the imaginative and colourful patterns.

LET’S GO GREEN
Ethics before everything: from ultra-green Latvia - that EPI (Environment Performance Index) has crowned the second greenest region in the world - comes QooQoo, a brand characterised by the unshakeable desire to produce fashion without disturbing the balance of the planet and abolishing labour exploitation. The trend is increasingly to rediscover respect for Gaia and her inhabitants, and Alyona Bauska - creator of the brand that was founded in 2010 - has made that article number 1 in the QooQoo Constitution. Latvian by birth, Alyona was inspired by memories of her childhood and the people of her land. Grandfather; costume designer, grandmother and mother loving creators of his clothes for little girls, Alyona could not help falling in love with the subject. Mass production is not allowed so as to not lose control over the entire process, QooQoo focuses on natural organic fabrics,

The preview for the experts at Columbia Halle in Berlin at the end of January, in conjunction with the Bread and Butter exhibition has dispelled any possible doubt on the research undertaken by the creative team of Scotch & Soda designers, in outlining the chosen themes. The company was founded in the ‘80s, but had a new beginning in 2001 when it decided to launch into the fashion world. With more than 90 stores worldwide, Scotch & Soda creates refined clothes, with rich, indispensable details, while remaining accessible to the public and, indeed, asking everyone to adapt the style to the individual, to fully enjoy what they wear. The Scoth & Soda Man for the cold 2013 season chooses a sartorial look with a worn and comfortable taste, in warm, enveloping colours. The treatments normally reserved for denim are applied to different fabrics to obtain special effects. Prints, all-over graphics, even thin lurex to light up the knitted inlays. A/W 13-14 sees a return to origins: inspired by the rebels Pollock and Jagger, the look for man mixes denims treated with new techniques with shirts, blazers and chinos in fascinating shades of Japanese indigo. Maison Scotch instead takes care of the woman and the cold of 2013 wanting her immersed in classic denim but updated with rock details, ‘80s glamour, inspired by Blondie and Marilyn, skinny or boyfriend fit to be worn with high heels. The oriental influence mixes with a romantic Parisien taste, the must-haves of the season include leather dresses with all-over prints and crystal bullet necklaces.
Stampe, elementi grafici all-over, persino un sottile lurex a illuminare intarsi in maglia.

The practice of “dressing in used clothing”, deeply rooted in the history of clothing and fabric, has been able over time to reinvigorate the concepts of “second hand” and “worn” with an irresistible charm, creating a real costume phenomenon. In recent years a growing number of companies have realised the importance of enhancing their heritage style, offering to the market reissues and new interpretations of iconic pieces that have made their brand famous, and that, by virtue of this history, give the modern garment value and authenticity; an evocative power, this, that speaks right to the ‘heart’ of the consumer, indirectly making them a witness to the past, belonging to a tribe, and an integral part of a cultural status symbol. The importance of the past in creativity is a staple of the house of Dockers, a company forming part of the Levi Strauss Group that has made chinos an institution and has been able to develop research and modelling at the highest levels without neglecting the heritage of the past. Lynn Downey, historian and archivist of the company, illustrates with her white gloves, 166 years

of innovation in the context of khaki, showing some of the most unique archival items that have shaped the history of Dockers and explaining how the cryptic term, probably derived from Urdu or Persian, means “dust” or “dusty”. A heavy cotton, with diagonal weaving, which was used for the first time by the British Army in the mid-nineteenth century for infantry uniforms, was ideal for its faded tint that blended well to the mud of the trenches. In the ‘20s, therefore, safari trousers become the favourite garment of explorers and adventurers, writers and wandering spirits, from Hemingway to F. Scott Fitzgerald. Here Levi Strauss & Co. enters into the fray with its first production of khaki clothing named ‘Sunset’. The Hollywood star system of the ‘40s unleashed it from its military bent, giving it a glam allure and allowing a safari style into civilian life. It is in the mid-eighties that the company

NECK PLUS ULTRA
After presenting his latest Autumn/Winter collection in Paris, “The Stiff Neck Chamber” the eclectic Danish fashion designer Henrik Vibskov, artist in all fields, as well as drummer in Trentemøller picks up the theme of the neck, thrashing it out to extremes. Not surprisingly, the title of his solo exhibition at the Galerie des Galeries, which will be on until May 4, 2013, is “Neck Plus Ultra”, a playful paraphrase of the Latin phrase Nec plus ultra. With a multi-sensory approach, poetic and playful at the same time, Henrik Vibskov introduces us a to visual universe that corresponds to his fashion style, full of colourful geometric sculptures and textiles. A path that leads through a forest of black flamingo necks hanging upside down, the inside of a tunnel formed by rotating cylinders in a tangle of black and orange op art, in search of tactile installations that lever the intrinsic aesthetics of the raw materials - gigantic growths of wool or cotton casings rhythmically wound on themselves - and their processes. There are also references to abstract painting, revisited using wool instead of paint. The neck is in short, the link that connects the works, all related to a more or less tubular form and with a textile common denominator: a tasty mix of surrealism, pop culture and psychedelic.
The neck “nothing further beyond” by Henrik Vibskov, on display at the Galerie des Galeries in Paris.

BOLD SOPHISTICATION
Distinctive design and strong work ethic; uncompromising craftsmanship and style. Martina Spetlova’s experiments with colours, fabrics and techniques represent a research that never stops. The new Autumn/Winter Collection 2013-14 surprises for its level of sophistication, and at the same time, power reached by the creations of this young designer of Czech origin and Londoner by adoption. Always fascinated by the complex possibilities of combinations between different materials, in her latest creations Martina joins together intrepid colour blocks with creased, perforated leather, sometimes interwoven with a satin ribbon, or layered with soft twisted Alpaca fibre, providing a tactile and sensory experience that crosses the barriers of simple design. The colour palette includes soft blue, a green that is like the colour of moths’ wings, orange in its warmest tones and mustard combined with acid yellow and the more classic black and white.A student of chemistry in the first instance, Martina trained as a designer at the prestigious Central Saint Martins College in London, graduating with a Master of Arts with a distinction in 2010. In February of the same year, Central Saint Martins decreed the collection of Spetlova to represent them during London Fashion Week. Winner of numerous awards, Chloe Textile Award in 2009; L’Oréal scholarship; finalist during ITS9 in Italy, Martina has her own studio in London.

The place: Kreuzberg, a district of West Berlin known for its high rate of Turkish immigrants and acclaimed for the presence of punk and artists. In particular, the Staub Studio. The time: today. Better, from now on. The subject: August, the brand new men’s fashion label. Josephin Thomas and Magdalena Kohler are two young designers who have decided to join forces and establish this new fashion adventure. Both coming from different not yet completed experiences - Josephin is a theatrical costume designer and curator of the look of many German bands; Magdalena is one of the creators and developers of Trikoton, a unique experiment: an emission of the human voice creates a binary code that is translated into knitting stitches to create unique and unrepeatable pieces. Together they conceived of August and its very original men’s collections. In that, for the A/W 13-14 season, there are classics such as T-shirts, shirts, jeans, cardigans, sweatshirts and sports pants, and even tube scarves, underwear, big bags, rucksacks and sports bags are reinterpreted with paint sketches precisely distributed by hand, padded linings, optical effects of contrasting colours and digital prints. The materials? From untreated cotton jersey to merino wool, polyester with the use of wooden buttons for the padded shirts or snap fasteners to the finish off the blousons. August is the perfect place where the future ideas of Josephin and Magdalena will meet in a blend of unique collections.

I materiali?

It is time to change. Subject to creative and aesthetic aspects, fashion is evolving in a holistic direction. It no longer just clothes bodies, but also souls. It no longer solely reflects personal style, but our whole system of values. In Berlin, the elevated social and environmental consciousness is pushing a growing number of brands and stores to convert to the criteria of eco-fashion, up-cycling, fair-trade, organic fashion, and even vegan. Here are some of the the most popular. The most radical is Atelier Awash. After thinking hard about the real meaning of elegance and the multiple aspects of sustainability - the use of certified organic materials (GOTS), crops with low water consumption, carbon footprint reduction, re-use of waste products (eg. for buttons), social development, support of traditional crafts - the owner, Davide Grazioli has created a menswear line with 100% integrity that is both relaxed and timeless, for the explorer of global contemporary culture. Champion of vegetable dyes, Grazioli says that his garments are “made to fade.” Particularly noteworthy then is the showroom of high-end vegan label, Umasan, designed by the twins Anja and Sandra Umann.

The national award for eco-design is for the project by Lisa D, “Bis es mir vom Leibe fällt” (until it falls to pieces): a workshop for interactive up-cycling involving artist and client in the transformation of clothes and disused objects. On the same wavelength, the duo SchmidtTakahashi is on a mission to collect, catalogue, store, resuscitate and re-cycle discarded clothing, saving it from destruction and oblivion. The essential mix of different fabrics and materials is also the signature style of the brand. Finally, the streetwear brand Treches of Jeanette Bruneau Rossow uses geometry and colour contrasts to create a contemporary urban look that is produced entirely in Berlin, with fair trade ecological hemps, flaxes and cottons.

The meeting, the same passion and desire to dare together: Abisso Milano is born.L’incontro, la stessa passione e la voglia di osare insieme: nasce Abisso Milano.
The Abisso project, based in Milan came about from the fortuitous encounter between Luca and Ross at the beginning of last year. The shoemaking experience of the first, unites with the accessory designing talent of the second, giving life to the common dream of creating products that give the possibility of going beyond the fashions of the moment, by adding new details and turning classical matching on its head without losing the timeless taste for historic Tuscan craftsmanship. Abisso Milano launches a new concept of sneaker onto the market which is based on total comfort combined with the strong aesthetic impact of the creation, inspired by the world of uniforms and playing with all the possible shades of a military green that guides the choice of colour for autumn/winter 13-14. For men, the collection ranges from proposals with strong street influences up to the most sought after models in full hipster style. The creations for women, however, made their debut at the first edition of Super, the fair organised by Pitti Immagine in collaboration with Fiera Milano. The event, dedicated to accessories and women’s ready-to-wear, aims to give space to emerging brands for whom it wants to be a prestigious springboard. At Super, the Abisso creative team presented three new models, the Stunning Sneakers. The “stunnings” are a perfect example of excellent craftsmanship applied to an eclectic style, full of technical innovation and based on a manic research into the combinations of materials.

The definition of fashion does not exist, there is only an idea that each of us has. Even if done incorrectly, one has to follow one’s own conception or vision of fashion, without allowing current trends to bend to the will of the masses. It is for definite: with this way of thinking Emiliano Laszlo, founder of the brand Studiopretzel, will go far. We start from the target: dressing a man in that part of the day that requires the utmost precision, but that everyone would like to enjoy somewhere between spontaneity and comfort. The fashion business of Studiopretzel begins with eastern elegance, comfortable clothing with soft lines, and a docile character; comfortable materials such as muslin and linen. The precision and discipline of martial arts - Laszlo is an expert in jiu jitsu - are reflected in the linearity of the cuts, no frills or unnecessary features. Even the tie is banned on the no-tie shirts, as if to challenge the businessman to reclaim its presence. The double-breasted yukatas bring the comfort of the house kimono typical of Japanese tradition to society life. Sweaters, jackets, nothing that constrains movements. The belts are those of the combat kimono. To validate the concept of respect for Studiopretzel, it adds that every garment of its collection is totally made in Italy and zero km. The Florence-Prato-Pontassieve axis provides artisans with everything they need to skilfully make the pieces of this lover of the distant, fascinating Orient.
A dressing philosophy that has its roots in Japanese culture gives shape and substance to the young brand, Studiopretzel.

WP updates the woman’s collection by Woolrich, the historical brand of outdoor clothing. Plundering the male wardrobe, the A/W 2013-14 pieces are given a uniquely feminine and casual-chic look. Through new combinations and layering, looking back towards the legacy of the seductive wool and patterns from early last century, Woolrich reworks womenswear with an informal taste. An ultra-feminine style, but still practical and functional, urban and contemporary, with total looks and jackets embellished with warm light fabrics such as silk and wool gauze. The memorable eskimo coat and parka do not disappear, and are combined with intriguing coats in double check with a sheepskin collar. For fur collars, a clever faux-fur version is expected. Pattern prints and checks are all the rage on dresses, shirts, sweatshirts, volumes are flowing and soft. The choice of colours remains as sophisticated pastels, from beige to cream, pink, blue and yellow, but also allowing for the seduction by the more pronounced mauve, burgundy and tobacco. Hunting Package, Arctic Breeze, Teton and Porselli are the leitmotifs of the collection. It begins by redefining masculine pieces to arrive at outfits consisting of coat, dress, suit and shirt in different materials and told in the personalised label of each garment. Teton, historic nylon dear to the brand, is used for creating coats in white, military navy, red and mélange; and finally the collaboration with the historic Milanese boutique Porselli, to complete the look of this ‘gentlewoman’ with ballet pumps in three different check wool patterns.

-What Lonely Hearts can do
Can you subvert revolutionary pop culture? Can you draw inspiration from religious icons and mix them up with ‘80s band, tennis clubs and biker gangs? Lonely Hearts says you can. Helene Morris and Steve Ferguson met in 2000 and, in unspoilt New Zealand in 2003 created their ultra-original brand of womenswear. From the beginning, the journey they undertook touched the most daring heights of fantasy made reality and bridging the gap between who we want to be and who we really are. The serious vein is undeniable, the idea of Lonely Hearts becomes a philosophy of life, but never misses the sense of fun. Perhaps this is what has made the brand one of the most popular in Australia and New Zealand. The A/W 2013-14 collection bears a name that says it all: Badsville. The style is now set in the Lonely Hearts, feminine without being silly. The reference, this time, is that of vintage horror and sci-fi with a taste of grunge and hip hop from the early ‘90s. The music of the Cramps, the American psychobilly band led by the enigmatic Lux Interior, has been the soundtrack behind all the unfolding of the project, inspiring the creative minds of the two lonely hearts with its atmosphere of horror. The prints on the T-shirts, designed by Stefan Sinclair of Two Hands Tattoo, perfectly sum up the stated intentions. Low waist trousers, baggy jeans, large, comfortable sizing to match with the warm sheepskin bomber jacket, one of the most loved pieces of the collection. The success of Lonely Hearts goes through all this.

For some it has always been in fashion. Indeed, more than just fashion, a real necessity. But for others, yoga could be a recent discovery, or yet to be experienced. Those who approach this world for the first time will be surprised at how the philosophical teachings are perfectly integrated with practical advice aimed at the psycho-physical balance of the person. Practitioners of this discipline are constantly increasing worldwide: in America alone, about fifteen million people are dedicated to it. The ancient Indian practice is now customary in Hollywood and around; showbiz personalities, who, for fashion, passion or straying from the first to the second, are called “celebriyogis”, and have become very loyal. No longer just deep breathing and meditation, yoga transforms and convinces even those who go to the gym mainly to exercise their muscles. The latest trend in this direction is Power Yoga, a more ‘sweaty’ version of the art of meditation that favours the metabolism through the synchronisation of movements and breathing techniques. And while this ancient discipline deals with the care of the individual,
the major brands of the sportswear universe do not neglect the appearance, launching specifically yoga-orientated clothing lines, made using soft cuts that allow a range of motion, with well defined shapes and an eclectic minimalism inspired by Eastern philosophy. In partnership with the world yoga expert, Tara Stiles, Reebok changes the rules and goes beyond the conventions with a micro-collectionmade of graphic designs and iconic writings that celebrate girl-power, but without neglecting the functional aspect, thanks to the know-how of the company in the field of fitness. Puma proposes a new type of leggings - PUMA RCVR - which combine the benefits of targeted compression with those of taping to help the natural systems of the body and support the most fatigued muscles. The Women’s TP RCVR Tight present Lymph technology that provides a micro-massage of the lymphatic vessels via flexible internal silicone bands. Patagonia also satisfied the yogaholics with a new specific collection signed by its ‘ambassadors’, including many surfers and climbers, such as an endorsement by Lydia Zamarano. A range of garments that includes both synthetic and natural fabrics, which are characterised by flexibility, quality and support, all fully recyclable through the Common Threads Initiative.

One among them, is Prancing Leopard Organics, the first activewear made in New Jersey that goes beyond yoga, designed for a 360 degree lifestyle and made entirely using organic fibres. Basic shapes, lightness of fabrics and harmonious colours also for the British brand Sweaty Betty, which focuses its expertise on the seamless technology of materials and their antibacterial properties. Everything seems to be ready for the next Salute to the Sun.

There is no one who does not know or has not used the legendary multi-function Victorinox penknife, the must-have accessory for all outdoor activities as well as in everyday life. This myth was created in 1884, when Karl Elsener started a small artisan company based in Switzerland. Since then, with undiminished passion and professionalism, production continues of this item, sold in millions of examples around the world, raking in dizzying profits for the company. The name owes its origins to Karl’s mother, Victoria, to which was added the suffix “inox” (steel), to sponsor the famous stainless steel blades. The company now has a presence in the market through the sale of watches, bags and clothing. We will talk about the last one today because Victorinox is investing heavily to revamp and consolidate its clothing line by relying on one of the coolest and most acclaimed young designers in Europe. We are talking about Christopher Raeburn, who was appointed artistic director of the Victorinox fashion division in January 2013. His unmistakable style has been able to give new life to disused military fabrics, skilfully transforming them into clothes that reflect and meet the dictates of modern style. The British artist has succumbed to the Swiss Appeal to the point of being perhaps the first case in which a prêt-à-porter designer espouses the cause of a brand that is casual by definition.

2013 is the year of celebrations for the Ben Sherman brand, icon of Brit style and modernity since 1963. With new stores in various parts of the world, a new collection, and above all the publication of a book entirely dedicated to this adventure, the brand that has conquered all the generations of young people from five decades ago until today celebrates its achievements and the culture of made in the UK. Born in 1925, Ben Sherman moved to the USA only twenty years after the Second World War. His art has its origins in America, in the clothing company owned by his father-in-law. Once back in the UK, Ben begins to design shirts for various companies; the design of the shirt that will become a style icon takes shape in his mind, ready to become a reality in 1963. The cotton is only the best and the softest, with softer collar and cuffs, the buttons are smaller and details like the box pleats on the back and the hanger loops make it unique. Each musical movement of the last 50 years has adopted the Ben Sherman shirt as its icon item of clothing, and today the brand has five lines that differ in target and identity, ideal for accommodating both the needs of a basic taste and the features of a more sophisticated wardrobe with a tailored twist. Of note, is the Plectrum line, founded in 2011 to bring Ben Sherman style to the catwalk through classics of the British tradition, revised and updated in terms of cuts and details. “Spirit of Union” is the theme of inspiration for the winter 2013/14 season, a tribute to the industrial communities of Britain in the middle of the last century and the figure of a miner, who, thanks to the all-over prints on shirts and fusion with workwear in the new outfits becomes the mascot of the collection. Happy Birthday, Mr. Shirt.
Buon compleanno, Mr. Shirt.

11:02:13: Long Tran, avant-garde fashion brand for men and women chooses the gallery The Artists Space, at 38 Greene Street, New York, and its fashion week to tell its dark tale. The Autumn/Winter 2013-14 collection confirms the visionary side of the young designer who has given shape and name to this line made up of pieces nothing short of spectacular; the fabulous models and the models of RED, Colby, and KB1111 and Compass contributed to the success of the show, along with the studied mood of the public as the exciting creations were revealed. The title of the collection, Anonymous, is appropriate, inspired by classics reinterpreted with elements of style that are not exactly minimalist: soft, adaptable fabrics such as silk and wool, with feathers, leather, engineered fibres and geometric shapes. The event was enriched by the presence of personalities from many different fields, all very attentive to the performance that was unique and full of meaning: from the rhythm & blues voice of Shontelle, to the rapper Misfit Dior; from the TV star Bree Michael Warner, to well-known bloggers, publishers and designers. Vince Smith Experience created unique hairstyles and make-up; while for nails and eyelashes, Kiss New York along with Jessica Tong produced unique style creations like those of Long Tran. Perhaps never before had there been so many exclamations of surprise, so many breaths held. Long Tran knew what buttons to press to trigger the range of human emotions.

As a child, he dreamed of being a pony and walking on four feet. Judging by the A/W 2013-14 visionary collection, Aponycalypse, an ode to these noble creatures, and symbol of the end of time as we know it, Tom Van der Borght has not left his dream behind in a drawer. Newly graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Sint Niklaas, this amazing fashion designer has already attended the fashion weeks in Berlin, Paris, and London with his collections, and won numerous awards, including the ASVOFF ‘05 for his fashion movie “Danny”. In perfect harmony with the rapid rise of his career, in addition, Tom founded his own label in January 2013. His sources of inspiration are many: the Renaissance engravings of Dürer; the pervasive psychedelic paintings with dripping paint in strong colours by the artist Johannes Obers, his companion; the four directions of the wind; the structures of society. In one word: life. The interpretation the designer gives to everything shows a terribly ironic character, gifted with a playful self deprecation: the dramatic nature of our time is enhanced, dissolving in the limits of classical beauty in his transcendent creations. The collection features prints on colourful jerseys, obsessive attention to detail in the simple materials such as rope, amazing accessories, basic streetwear clothes bordering on hysteria. Men’s fashion strays into the feminine dimension and vice versa, raising everything in the hope for a bright future.

In the heart of the fashion district of Manhattan, Richard Langford and Bill Minicozzi are pursuing and implementing a project called Prêt-à-Style Lab. Richard was trained in the sales sector of brands such as Quiksilver and Ocean Pacific, in addition to having signed a partnership for the American debut of Energie and Miss Sixty some years ago. Bill began his career as a retail buyer, but the turning point came with the role of Senior Merchandising manager for several brands of the Biedermann group, from Yves Saint Laurent to Ecko Unlimited. Gifted in their know-how, in autumn 2011 they founded their own agency, or rather a creative and commercial workshop, with the aim of developing and growing brands of streetwear style, with all the credentials to become blockbusters in the American market. Prêt-à-Style was created to provide a range of services from commercial representation to product development, from PR to marketing strategies, and only a year later, it is ready to launch its spin-off, the White Box showroom. A destination not to be missed for all those retailers interested in scouting among new international brands every bit as strategic for manufacturers of clothing and accessories determined to increase their sales in the United States, facing new commercial challenges able to increase their image. Among the brands represented today by White Box, it is worth mentioning the very Italian Close-Up with its ‘fast apparel’ born from a collection of T-shirts and soon evolving towards a total masculine look; the eclectic jeans-maker Dirty Rotten Scoundrel; the surfwear evolved from the brand Surf Quest. It only remains to be seen what new surprises come out of the box.

‘For our industry, by our industry, supporting our industry’ is the diktat imposed by the new streetwear platform of the made in UK fashion system. An axiom that has been able to muster the best operators in urban style clothing at the National Hall in London to realise the fourth edition of The Ledge, the only UK trade event dedicated to action sports and clothing closely linked to metropolitan sports, from skateboarding to motocross. A mixture of established and up-coming brands, brought together under the same roof for a full immersion in the urban fashion that attracted buyers and retailers in a breathless three days from 25 to 27 January. Among the confirmations of the previous season, streetwear giants like Etnies, Osiris, and Santa Cruz, were alongside other historical names in this segment who chose to be added to the Ledgers crew for the first time: Nike, Rip Curl, Hurley, Protest and Brakeburn, to name a few. Although its roots lie in skateboarding, The Ledge is not fossilised in that world and chooses to expand its offering with a wink to punk, dark and rockabilly subcultures, still so alive and vivid in the Anglo-Saxon custom and today again taken into account by leading figures in the fashion industry; but the list of exhibitors now includes brands that are also linked to snowboarding and two wheels, fashion accessories, underwear and a shortlist of proposals dedicated to the child with an undisputed ‘rock’ footprint. And while the Streetwear Village area plays doubles by multiplying by two the number of brands present in just one season, the space devoted to action once again expresses the innovative and nonconformist spirit of this event, setting up a live skateboarding competition, for girls only.
‘For our industry, by our industry, supporting our industry’ è il diktat imposto dalla nuova piattaforma streetwear del fashion system made in UK.
