Kirton Primary School Autumn Term 2019 Newsletter
Welcome back to another exciting year at
Kirton Primary School. We would like to extend
a particularly warm welcome to all the new
children and their families who have joined us,
as well as new members of staff.
As ever, the end of the summer term was
extremely busy. Our hard-working staff
managed to fit in a fabulous Y6 production, a
Leavers’ Assembly, cup presentations, parties,
year group trips, sporting events, a PTA Gala,
sports days, and award ceremonies - all of
which the children and staff enjoyed
immensely.
Thank you to everyone who made it all happen.
Kirton Primary School wins STEM Award at the
Education Business Awards 2019
Kirton Primary School is proud to announce
that, in the summer term, we were shortlisted
in the national Education Business Awards in
two categories – ‘Outstanding Progress for a
Primary School’ and the ‘STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering and Maths) Award.
The Awards recognise and celebrate the
significant successes enjoyed by schools across
the UK.
The ceremony was held in London in July and
was hosted by Angellica Bell.
The school is proud to announce that it was the
overall winner in the STEM category.
Miss West is awarded Inspirational Teacher of
the Year 2019
2
Another proud moment for the school last term
was when Miss West was recognised as the
Most Inspirational Teacher of the Year in the
Free Press Education Awards.
This is the second time one of our teachers has
been shortlisted in this highly sought after
category. Last year, Mr Batterham was
shortlisted for this award.
We would also like to congratulate Mr
Slaughter who was shortlisted in this category,
and joins our school this September to teach in
Year 4.
Kirton Primary School was shortlisted for
Primary School of the Year on the same night –
this is an award we won last year.
It was an immensely proud evening for the
school!
Gold School Games Award 2019
We are delighted to announce that Kirton
Primary School has achieved the School Games
Gold Mark Award.
The School Games Mark is a Government-led
award scheme launched to reward schools for
their commitment to the development of
competition across the school and into the
community, and we are delighted to have been
recognised for our success.
It was recognised that the school had fulfilled
criteria in the areas of participation,
competition, workforce and clubs.
The school is delighted to have its hard work
rewarded. A special thank you to Mr Greaves
for steering staff and children through this
process, and for his never-ending enthusiasm
for raising the profile of sport and fitness
across our school.
tes School Awards – ‘Primary School of the
Year 2019’
Kirton Primary School was also shortlisted in
the national tes school awards for ‘Primary
School of the Year 2019’.
These national awards recognise the most
outstanding individuals and institutions that the
education sector has to offer.
Tes editor Ann Mroz said: We had a record
number of entries this year and the standard
3
was very high, so all those shortlisted should be
very proud: it’s an extraordinary achievement
to be on this shortlist.
The award ceremony took place at the
Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London.
Golden Apples Awards 2019
We are also delighted to announce that Ms
Lewis made it to the final three teachers in the
Lincolnshire Golden Apples Awards in the
category ‘Primary School Teacher of the Year
2019’.
This is the third year running that one of our
teachers has reached the final three in this
category, which covers the whole of
Lincolnshire. Last year, Miss Whalley made it to
the final three, and in 2017 the title was taken
by Mr Greaves.
An amazing achievement for one school. Well
done Ms Lewis!
tes Award – ‘Maths Team of the Year 2019’
Kirton Primary School was shortlisted in the
the national tes school awards in the category
of ‘Maths Team of the Year’ for all the amazing
and inspirational work the school undertakes to
promote a love of maths and the high standards
which result from this work.
The award ceremony took place at the
Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London.
Mr Warman MP took time out of his busy
schedule in Westminster to celebrate the
school’s recent success at an event hosted for
4
the shortlisted schools at the Houses of
Parliament in London.
National Special Educational Needs and
Disability Awards 2019
Kirton Primary School is proud to announce that
it has been shortlisted in two award categories
in the National Special Educational Needs and
Disability Awards 2019.
We have been shortlisted for awards in the
categories of Most Inclusive Practice Across a
School and Most Innovative Special Needs
Intervention. The winners will be announced
later this month.
Lincolnshire Life Magazine
The school was delighted to appear in the May
edition of the Lincolnshire Life magazine,
featuring in a very complimentary three-page
spread.
Congratulations to all our children, staff,
governors and parents who have contributed as
a team to realise such amazing recognition on
both a local and national scale.
We have a lot to be proud of!
Passports to Achievement
Children from Reception to Y6 will shortly be
bringing home their personal Passport of
Achievement. Each passport lasts one year, and
encourages the children to take part in
challenges both at home and at school.
It would make a wonderful home-school link if
you were able to support your child in achieving
their challenges for the year. Each completed
passport earns your child a medal.
Please encourage your child to take care of
their passport and to treasure it as
replacement passports incur a charge of £4,
and the children would need to complete the
challenges again from scratch if misplaced.
Artsmark Award
Kirton Primary School has embarked on a
journey to achieve the nationally acclaimed
Artsmark Award, awarded by Arts Council
England. We are grateful to Ms Chandley and
Ms Lewis for spearheading this project across
the school.
Artsmark is designed to inspire young people to
create, experience and participate in the arts
and culture and, hence, enhance our school’s
already diverse curriculum.
5
Please keep a look out for our ‘Virtual Art
Gallery’ which will be uploaded to our website
this term. It will feature some of the creations
of our very talented children. Here is a sneak
preview:
Year 6 Art Club
Year 3 Art Lesson
Mosaics
Our children have already been flexing their
creative muscle and honing their technology
skills in order to producs ten huge, and quite
stunning, mosaics which are displayed around
the school.
Please take the time to view these next time
you are in. We’re sure you will agree that the
children have done an amazing job.

Visit from Matt Warman, MP
Matt Warman, MP, visited the school to
congratulate everyone on the school’s recent
successes, in particular, being rated the best
state-funded primary school in Lincolnshire for
four years running.
While visiting the school, Mr Warman couldn’t
resist testing out our newly installed gym
equipment - under the watchful eyes of our
pupils.
Duckling Update
Our ‘ducklings’ are now ‘ducks’ and are enjoying
their new lives with Ms Lewis. The children
receive regular duck updates.
New Multiplication Tables Test for all Y4 pupils
The Government has announced that all children
in Y4 are to have their multiplication skills
7
formally tested, beginning in June 2020. This
means that our current Y4 cohort will be
amongst the first children in the country to
take part in this assessment.
If you have any questions or concerns about
this, please discuss them with your child’s class
teacher.
Support your Child’s Learning
Multiplication Tables: One of the challenges of
the national curriculum is that every child
should know their tables up to 12 X 12 by the
end of Y4. We have a Tables Challenge in school
and we teach tables regularly in class, but
learning tables is matter of constant repetition
so, whenever you get a moment, please practise
with or test your child. As an incentive, every
set of full marks in your child’s weekly tables
test earns them another Kirt to save in the
bank or spend in the shop.
We are keen for our children to know their
tables, but wish the learning of them to be as
much fun as possible. To this end, our website
contains useful resources to support your
child’s learning at home. These may be found in
the ‘Parents’’ section under ‘Support Your
Child’s Learning’, as well as in the ‘Children’s’
section.
You will find a tables’ grid and some practice
sheets to download should you wish to use them
with your child. You will also find songs and
videos made by our staff and children that you
might like to sing along to.
Spelling: From Y2 to Y6, your child will bring
home a set of 10 weekly spellings to learn.
These will include words that support the
spelling rules your child is learning in class,
commonly misspelt words, or useful words
recommended by the National Curriculum.
If you want to take a look at the National
Curriculum spelling vocabulary for Key Stage 2,
it is on our website. They’re not as easy as you
might think!
Remember, we are running a Spelling
Championship in school with a top prize of 100
Kirts to spend at Kirton Stores, and every set
of full marks in your child’s weekly spelling test
earns them another Kirt.
Handwriting: We use a cursive script across
the school in order to improve handwriting and
presentation. Lower down the school, this may
result in a more ‘untidy’ style at first as
children get to grips with the joins. However,
with perseverance, your child’s handwriting will
improve. Visitors often praise our children’s
beautiful handwriting skills.
If you would like to practise handwriting with
your child at home (perhaps by writing out
spellings), please follow the exemplar below:

Kirton Nursery School
We have our own web page. Please come and
visit us at:
http://www.boston-nur.lincs.sch.uk/Kirton-
Nursery-Home
Put your child on the path to a first rate
education. At the end of the summer term, our
Nursery is often full and we have to begin a
waiting list for places. If you are thinking of
requesting a place for your child, we fully
recommend that you act early so as not to be
disappointed. We often have places at the
beginning of the year, but they are unlikely to
be free for long.
Our award winning provision for 3 and 4 year-
olds, which is led by a fully qualified school
teacher, provides seamless transition and
promotes excellent progress for every child
entering Kirton Primary School. Did you know,
for instance, that the children in Nursery begin
early phonics and number work that will give
them a head start when they begin school in
Reception?
We notice a marked difference in the starting
points of those children who have attended our
Nursery and those who have attended other
local settings.
As well as the 15 free hours a week to which all
three-year-olds are entitled, we offer
additional sessions over and above this. We also
offer flexibility when selecting sessions for
your child. You may choose mornings,
afternoons, or a mix of both - or even five full
days a week. We will do our best to
accommodate your request, but we are more
likely to be able to do this if you get your
child’s name down early.
Additional sessions, above the free entitlement
of 15 hours, may be purchased at a cost of
£12.00 for 3 hours. This is extremely
competitive locally. Eligible working parents may
be entitled to 30 free hours for their child.
The purchase of a lunch is also available if
required.
Please come and talk to us to discuss your
options and to see for yourself what one of the
best pre-schools in the county has to offer.
If you know anyone else who might benefit from
our excellent Nursery facilities, please let them
know.
Message from the Parliament Federation’s
Governing Body
Hello and welcome to all new parents - and
welcome back to all our parents with children
returning to a new school year. We hope you
have enjoyed the summer holidays.
We would like to start by saying
‘Congratulations’ to Kirton Primary School on
the shortlisting and awards received at the end
of last term.
We are particularly proud to be awarded the
‘Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths
9
Award’ in the national Education Business
Awards.
We would also like to offer our congratulations
to Ms West who was awarded ‘Inspirational
Teacher of the Year 2019’.
These awards are testament to the amazing
staff, children and parents at our school, and
we all feel immensely proud to represent Kirton
Primary. Please see our website to view all the
awards received by Kirton Primary School.
‘What do Governors do?’
The Governing Body is an elected group,
including teachers, support staff, parents and
members of the local community. We work as a
voluntary team with the Executive Head
Teacher and the Heads of School for the
benefit of all the pupils and staff across the
Federation.
We’re here to give the school a strategic
direction and to act as ‘a critical friend’ –
helping to guide the school to improving the
standard of education for all our children. We
don’t get involved in the day-to-day operation
of the school, but set the criteria by which the
school is managed. We ensure that local and
national government legislation and targets are
met, that we spend our school budget wisely,
that the safety of everyone is paramount, and
that the curriculum is delivered to benefit all
children. Governors take an active role in the
school, not only attending meetings, but also
school functions, undertaking visits to
classrooms and helping out with school visits.
If you require any further information
regarding our Governing Body, please refer to
the school’s website.
Message from the PTA
The PTA wishes to thank everyone who
supported their most recent events: the
Sponsored Walk and the Summer Gala. Thanks
to your generosity, the Sponsored Walk raised
over £1 200, and the Gala made almost £2 100.
The money raised will be spent directly on
improving learning opportunities and
experiences for the children in our school. In
the last twelve months, we have paid for a
theatre production, fish and chips for Y6,
recollection folders for our Y6 Leavers, stock
for the school shop, a Christmas entertainer,
and Santa’s candy and satsumas for our younger
children.
We look forward to your continuing support this
year.
Sport Update (by Mr Greaves):
Girls’ Kwik Cricket – County Finals
With the British weather teasing thunder
storms and showers all day, the Girls Kwik
Cricket final was an exciting adventure from
start to finish.
The tournament, held at Nettleham Cricket
Club in Lincoln, hosted seven qualifying teams,
10
competing for the honour of being named
‘County Champions’.
Seventy one schools entered the initial round of
the competition so just to qualify for the final
was an incredible achievement!
Kirton Primary School played their six games
with true grit, determination and some very
impressive teamwork and fielding skills.
Having won four games, been well beaten (by
the champions) and just pipped in another
match, meant that Team Kirton finished in an
outstanding third place!
Such a great event. Such a wonderful effort
from the girls. Such a superb result. Very done
to the team!
Kwik Cricket - County Final
Seventy two teams entered the Lincolnshire, Y5
Kwik Cricket Tournament in 2019. Team Kirton
played their qualifying competition at Boston
Cricket Club. By winning this event, entry to the
County Finals was awarded.
Hartsholme Cricket Club, Lincoln was the host
for the annual competition which had seven
teams in from across the whole county.
Kirton won three of their matches and lost the
other three, losing out to the eventual winners
by a mere four runs - showing what a close
contest it was.
These results meant Y5 children from Kirton
achieved their highest ever County results with
a solid third place overall. Incredible!
As always, determination, fair play and never
giving up were attributes that shone in Team
Kirton children.
Here’s looking forward to the Y6 competition
next year... a little more over arm bowling
training and Kirton should be even higher in the
results table.
Well done to all involved. Fabulous!
Y5 Kwik Cricket - County Finalists
After rain stopped play on the original Year 5
Kwik Cricket, the rescheduled event got
underway with some cracking matches in late
June. Five quality teams showed up to try to
earn their place in the county finals, win a prize
for a “champagne moment” and compete for the
fair play trophy!
There was incredible bowling, fielding, batting
and sportsmanship throughout the day’s
contest.
11
Kirton won their first two games with solid, all
round tactics. Game 3 looked like it was safe as
they were 33 runs up with 12 balls left but
Swineshead just kept hitting fours! Tom
(Kirton’s superstar bowler) launched himself
into the air on the boundary and got a hand to a
ball and stopped a six - simply outstanding,
game saving move!
With one ball left, Kirton needed to stop four
runs (to avoid a loss) so, with a little
encouragement from the boundary, he bowled a
really fast, low ball. Game saved!
The last game demonstrated superb cricket
played by both teams with the last 12 balls
containing the majority of the runs. Kirton lost
this match by 11, meaning two teams had the
same number of wins and losses! It all came
down to runs scored!
Kirton took the day by over 50 runs - and
breathed a huge sigh of relief! What a day!
Girls’ County Kwik Cricket – County Finalists
Team A
After rain delayed play, the Girls’ Kwik Cricket
Tournament finally got underway at Boston
Cricket Club.
Kirton Primary sent two teams to compete for
the chance to represent the Boston area at the
Lincolnshire County Finals. Both teams won all
their matches in the league section of the
competition which led them to the semi-finals.
Kirton B team played a fabulous game in which
Eboney was awarded with a ‘champagne moment’
for motivational teamwork (to both teams!).
Unfortunately, they lost the game by 4 runs to
come in 4th place.
Kirton’s other team whipped up an attacking
frenzy with superb catches, accurate fielding
and totally awesome run stealing. They managed
to win the game by over 40 runs to secure their
place in the county finals which are to be held
at Hartsholme Cricket Club in Lincoln.
As always, sportsmanship and determination
were in abundance. Well done to everyone
involved.
Team B
Danish Longball
Twenty enthusiastic, skilled athletes took a trip
to Holbeach Primary School for a Danish
12
Longball Competition to compete in a league
style format.
Danish Longball is a cross between rounders,
cricket and dodgeball. It is a very strategic
game where teams need to choose where to hit
the ball, how hard and whether to run for two
points or to risk a five point move. Working as a
team, and occasionally sacrificing yourself for a
team mate to get more points, is a tough but
essential part of being in a winning team.
Kirton Primary School secured both 1st and 2nd
place with the teams they took.
New Age Kurling Competition
Early in Term 5, nine excited children made
their way to Giles Academy for a New Age
Kurling Competition.
New Age Kurling is a form of the original curling
game but adapted so that it can be played
indoors on any smooth, flat surface, such as a
sports hall, rather than on ice.
It is also a sport that can be easily adapted so
that everybody can play. At the event, there
were some superstar kurlers that competed in
wheel chairs and used adapted poles to move
their stones.
The game requires focus and is very tactical.
Needless to say, Kirton Primary School children
tried their best, behaved very sportingly and
had a great time. Nine teams competed and
Kirton managed a very respectable fourth place.
Another great sporting event.
Kwik Cricket Tournament
Kirton Primary School took part in a Kwik
Cricket Tournament at Boston Cricket Club.
The tournament was run in a league format and
then the winner of each league went through to
the final stages.
Team Kirton managed to win all the games in
their group playing some very thoughtful
cricket. They didn’t risk unnecessary run-outs
(as that would have lost the team 5 runs) and
they bowled with 100% focus because any wides
or no-balls gave the opposition 2 runs.
In the semi-finals, Kirton play St Thomas’
School. This was a cracking match and one in
which some of our team faced very quick, over
arm bowls for the first time ever.
Unfortunately, Kirton lost this game by only 9
runs. It was a cracking match though!
Rounders Tournament
Another wonderful result for Team Kirton.
Having been rescheduled due to a downpour in
May, the annual Boston Schools Sports
Partnership Rounders tournament took place at
St Giles academy (in very warm but blustery
conditions) in July.
13
Kirton took two teams to the event which was
initially a round-robin (every team played every
other team) format.
Kirton’s A team lost their first game by half a
rounder but then went on to win the remaining 6
games. They batted fairly well but their
strength was fielding as they were so focused
on running out batters at first or second base.
Some epic catches also helped their winning
streak.
Kirton’s other 9 players needed a little more
warming up before securing a victory but they
were very encouraging of each other and made
some big improvements in their tactics to see
some wins.
Onto the finals and Kirton A played
outstandingly in the semi-final to make it
through to the final where they played St
Thomas’ - the team to whom they lost at the
start of the day.
Kirton fielded first, and ended up bowling,
throwing and catching to the highest level of
the day. St. Thomas’ were all out with balls to
spare and only managed to scored 1 rounder.
Overall finishing positions were 5th and 1st for
Team Kirton. Another memorable, hard fought
tournament that saw Kirton raising the winner’s
trophy once more.
Commentary
Such has been the school’s sporting successes
this year, we might need another display
cabinet to house all the new trophies.

School Uniform
We are proud of the way our children present
themselves at our school and are thankful to
have parents who are supportive and sensible
about school uniform. We have very few
concerns and regularly get positive comments
from school visitors, or when we take our
children on trips, with regards to our children’s
presentation. Ofsted also commented positively
on the way our children dress for school and
the pride they show in their appearance.
Please take the time to remind your child that
jewellery should not be worn at school ie no
bracelets, chains, rings, wrist bands etc, We
make an exception for stud earrings, although
earrings should not be worn on PE days).
Hairstyles should be conservative.
Coloured/bleached hair, gel and close or
patterned shaves are clearly not appropriate in
a primary school. Nail polish and transfer
‘tattoos’ are also not appropriate.
For more information, please refer to our
website. As ever, we thank you for your good
sense and support.
14
Health and Safety Reminders
If your child normally goes home on the school
bus, please let the office know if your
arrangements change so we may amend the bus
register. Failure to inform the office could hold
up the entire bus.
If anyone other than the usual adult is to
collect your child at the end of the day, please
ensure that the school has been made aware.
If you have moved house or have changed your
telephone number over the summer, please
make the office aware of your new contact
details.
Please remember that no images must be made
with recording devices, including mobile ‘phones,
anywhere on our school site without the
express permission of the Head of School or
the Executive Headteacher. Mobile phones
must not be used by parents or visitors
anywhere within the school building.
Please ensure that your children do not access
the gym equipment or the climbing frames
except under the direct supervision of staff.
With the exception of guide and hearing dogs,
no dogs are permitted on the school site at any
time. Please note, this includes puppies and
small dogs which are carried.
The entire school site, including outdoor areas,
is a no smoking zone. This ban includes e-
cigarettes as we anticipate that all adults will
be positive role models while on site.
Bikes and scooters are a fabulous way for our
children to get to school, being both speedy and
active.
The children are aware that they should not
cycle or scoot on the school grounds as this
could cause an accident. We remind our children
regularly in class and in assemblies to dismount
while on paths and playgrounds. Please remind
your child should they forget.
Some of our children risk suffering a life-
threatening reaction to nuts – even by simply
being in the vicinity of a nut. For this reason,
we ask that no child bring any food items into
school that contain nuts, even for their own
consumption.
Out of respect for our neighbours, please take
care not to block people’s driveways when
parking.
Oversubscribed
Many of our year groups are currently
oversubscribed, despite the extra classes we
have opened. Although it may seem a long way
off, if you are aware of friends or neighbours
15
who have children who are due to start school in
September 2020, please remind them to apply
in good time in order to be in a better position
of securing a place at our increasingly popular
school.
School admissions are handled by Lincolnshire
County Council for a September start in
Reception. However, we organise our own
admissions to our Nursery, and you may register
your interest for 2020 at the office now.
We are usually able to admit children midyear
into all other year groups directly through the
school office.
Bug Busting
Every school has to deal with head lice and we
are no exception. The problem is often more
prevalent when children start back at school
after a holiday. Although we will never
eradicate head lice, there are things that we
can do to alleviate the problem. This Saturday,
7th September, we ask that every child’s hair is
checked at home for lice.
The following advice comes from the school
nursing team:
A fine tooth plastic comb is best for detecting
head lice and you should check school children
and family members at least once a week. Young
lice are the size of a full stop and adults the
size of a sesame seed. Treatments are available
from your GP and are free for children. You
should only treat those people with lice living in
their hair.
Keeping Children Safe Online
Families often think they know exactly what
their children get up to online, and that they
understand all the apps and sites their children
use. But with technology changing every day,
that's not always the case.
The NSPCC has an online safety helpline:
0808 800 5002 and a website:
https://www.o2.co.uk/help/nspcc that offers
support and advice to parents and carers.
Healthy School
We are proud recipients of the Healthy School
Award, but there are certain conditions to
which we must adhere in order to maintain this
status.
Please be aware that the only snack children
should bring in for break-time is fruit.
Children should only have water in their water
bottles.
Facebook and other Social Media
We thank our whole community, especially
parents and carers, for their vigilance over
negative or inappropriate comments made on
Facebook or other social media sites about the
school or its staff. Please be assured that all
information received, which is thankfully very
little considering the size of our school, is
treated in the strictest confidence in terms of
its source.
Negative comments can have an impact on staff
morale and, in turn, on the children in our
school. Parents and volunteers have also
expressed their distress and despair at reading
comments that have been made in the past. We
take upset such as this extremely seriously, and
engage the support of the police and legal
services where necessary. Indeed, we are
16
grateful to the police for their robust stance
on such damaging activity.
We also ask that any photographs or filming,
undertaken by family members at school, is of
your own child and for your own personal use.
Children’s images taken at school should not be
shared on social media sites – even images of
your own children. This is to ensure that we can
continue to invite parents to photograph their
children at school events.
We thank you again for your understanding, and
welcome your continuing support
