    Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to the KIPP NYC College Prep team and family! KIPP NYC College Prep is dedicated to teaching

our students to develop the character and academic skills necessary to succeed in high school and

college, to be self-sufficient, successful and happy in the competitive world beyond. We will continue

the great work that began in our middle schools, and prepare our students for life beyond KIPPs four

walls. It is so exciting to have you and your children join us for our third year.

Whether our KIPPsters are in the classroom studying Global History, participating in Freshman

Orientation on college campuses, performing in our student productions, identifying their long-term

goals or practicing basketball; they truly embody what it is to be a KIPPster. We practice working hard

and being nice every day. Due to their tremendous grit, love, hope, communication and support, we

know our KIPPsters are certainly doing amazing things. Our newest freshmen class will help to create a

foundation at KIPP NYC College Prep that will set the tone for years to come. The students are

trailblazers and their leadership will be vital to our success! These are truly exciting times, and we are so

glad that you are part of it!

We recognize that these efforts take tremendous discipline and dedication, which can only be done with

the joint efforts of families, staff and, of course, our students themselves. In our attempt at continued

open communication and access to information, we have prepared a handbook ofthe schools

structure, attendance, schedule, culture, and academics. I hope that this handbook will serve as a useful

resource to answer questions you may have. Please keep it handy so that you may refer to it when

necessary. As our school grows, we will continue to update our handbook and will make sure that you

always have the most recent information.

We look forward to an exciting and positive year! Please feel free to contact me if you have any

    questions, comments, or concerns.

Thank you for your continued faith and support,

    Natalie Webb

KIPP NYC College Preparatory High SchoolMission

KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) NYC College Preps mission is to teach our students to develop the

academic and character skills necessary to succeed in high school and college, to be self-sufficient,

successful, and happy in the competitive world, and to build a better tomorrow for themselves and us

    all.

    Our Name

Our name, KIPP NYC College Prep, signifies one of our primary objectives as a school to develop the

academic and character skills necessary to attain a college degree. Currently the majority of teenagers

from New York City never attend college, and many of the NYC students who do start college never

finish. By naming our school KIPP NYC College Prep, we refuse to accept that most New York City

students are not prepared to start and finish college. Our belief is that every KIPPster can earn a college

degree, which is the key to being self-sufficient, successful, and happy in our competitive world. Ourgoal is to have our students go and graduate from college.

    Our Crest

The school crest will stand as the visual representation of our values and

philosophy. Our crest will be the first thing colleges see when they read our

recommendations and when visitors enter our school. The key elements of our

crest are the laurel wreath, an open book, our motto, and the date of our schools

founding. The laurel wreaths symbolize perseverance and victory. They will

become part of our commencement ceremony and stand as a reminder that one

can never rest on their past success or laurels, but that we all must keep moving forward. The open

book symbolizes the sharing of knowledge and the importance of curiosity. It is our strong belief that

we all learn from each other and that one day our students will become the teachers of the next

generation. Additionally, the quest for knowledge is as important as having knowledge. We plan to help

students become lifelong learners by fostering a sense of curiosity that extends beyond the school walls.

We will drive our students to question the world around them and find better answers to todays

    problems.

    Our MottoAncora Imparo

KIPP NYC College Preps motto translates to "I am still learning." Michelangelo, the great ItalianRenaissance artist that created such masterpieces as the painted ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and the

sculpture of David, spoke these words in his eighty-seventh year, at a time when he was considered a

master of his craft. Ancora Imparoexemplifies KIPP NYC College Preps lifelong learning philosophy, in

which our students and faculty constantly seek to learn new things, challenge their thinking, practice

their skills and develop themselves. Like Michelangelo, we are motivated to become better tomorrow

    than we are today.

    KIPP: Credo

If there is a problem, we look for a solution.

If there is a better way, we try to find it.

If we need help, we ask.

If a teammate needs help, we give.

    At KIPP, We Believe

We believe in the creation of inspired lives produced by desire, discipline, and dedication.

We are not frightened by the challenges of reality but believe that we can change our world

and our place within in it.

We work, plan, create, and dream.

Our talent, character, and integrity will be the tools we need to build a better tomorrow.

We believe that we can take this place, this time, and the people here and build a better place, a better

    time, and a better people.

As a team and a family, we will either find a way or make one.

    The Five Pillars of KIPP:

KIPP NYC College Prep is part of a national network of KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) schools,

which share a set of core operating principles known as the Five Pillars:

I High Expectations: KIPP NYC College Prep has clearly defined and measurable high expectations for

academic achievement and conduct that make no excuses based on students backgrounds. Students,

parents, teachers, and staff create and reinforce a culture of achievement and support through a range

of formal and informal rewards and consequences for academic performance and behavior.

II Choice & Commitment: Students, their parents, and the faculty choose to participate in the program.

No one is assigned or required to attend the school. Everyone must make and uphold a commitment to

the school and to each other and put in the time and effort required to achieve success.

III More Time: We know that there are no shortcuts when it comes to success in academics and life.

With an extended school day, week, and year, students have more time in the classroom both to acquire

the academic knowledge and skills that will prepare them for competitive colleges and to engage in

    diverse extracurricular experiences.

IV Power to Lead: At KIPP NYC College Prep, we believe that great schools require great school leaders.

KIPP NYC principals have control over their schools budget and personnel, allowing them maximum

    effectiveness in helping students learn.

V Focus on Results: KIPP has a relentless focus on high student performance on standardized tests and

other objective measures. Just as there are no shortcuts, there are no excuses. Students are expected

to achieve a level of academic performance that will enable them to succeed at the nation s best

colleges. KIPP NYC College Prep will administer New York State Regents tests in all major subject areas,

    in addition to school-based assessments.

ACADEMICS: Grading Policy and Graduation Requirements

Meeting NYC and NY State requirements for graduation does not necessarily mean that a student is

prepared for college, which is why KIPP NYC College Prep is setting standards above and beyond the city

and state requirements for graduation. Academic preparedness for college is essential for success in

completing college. Colleges and universities expect to see at least a C or 75 (2.0) average in both

course grades and NY State Regents exams, which is why KIPP NYC College Prep High School requires

students to earn at least a C or 75 in NY State Regents exams and maintain at least a C- or 70 average to

pass a course. If a student is not meeting these standards, academic support services will be provided to

every student in need (see Academics: Support and Probation).

    Grading Policy

    Letter Grade GPA Description

A (93-100) 4.0 Students receiving an A show deep mastery of the knowledge and skills that

A- (90-92) 3.7 have been taught; they demonstrate an ability to go beyond the basic

requirements of assignments to produce creative, thorough work.

    B+ (87-89) 3.3 Although students receiving a B may still have some

value of the letter grade where an A is 4.0, B 3.0, and C 2.0.

    Assessments and Exams

At KIPP NYC College Prep, students will be assessed in their classes in various ways. Classroom teachers

will use class work, homework, participation, conduct, papers, projects, presentations, tests/quizzes,

and major exams at the end of each semester to determine each students grade. Unit assessments,

tests, quizzes and/or essays will count for at least 70% of a students grade.

As the vast majority of colleges use final exams, at the end of each semester KIPP NYC College Prep

students will have a mid-term and final exam or paper/project in all their core academic classes. If a

course includes a NY State Regents or Advanced Placement Exam, these tests may replace a final exam.

    Attendance Policy

    School Hours

KIPP NYC College Prep believes students need to be at school daily to maximize their learning

opportunities. We strongly request that students and their parents make every effort possible to

minimize the number of days they miss school. The school will open for breakfast at 7:30 AM. Theschool day begins at 8:00 AM and ends at 4:30 PM on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays; at 3:40 PM on

Wednesdays and 3:01 PM on Fridays. Students must arrive to school by 7:50 AM to ensure that they will

be in their first period class by 8:00 AM. Additionally, students who participate on sports teams may

have longer practices and practice four to six days a week depending on their sport.

As a college preparatory high school, regular classroom attendance is an absolute necessity in order to

build the habits of accountability and responsibility needed in college and throughout life. Classroom

instructional time is invaluable to preparing for the demands of college and work. Making up missed

assignments, while required, cannot replace classroom time. Therefore, we strongly encourage that

students and their parents make every effort possible to minimize the number of absences.

    Excused Absences

Daily attendance in school is required. The only absences that are considered excused are:

    Personal illness

    Death of a family member

Serious family emergencies (subject to principal approval)

    Court summons

    School approved activity

    Religious holiday

Medical appointments (please note: if regular doctor, dentist, or other non-urgentappointments need to be made, the expectation is for every attempt to be made to schedule

appointments after school, or on early dismissal or school holiday dates)

For an excused absence, parents/guardians must notify KIPP NYC College Prep before 8:00am of each

day the student is absent. When the student returns to school, he/she must bring a note signed by a

parent/guardian to the main office. The note must be written clearly in ink and contain the following

    information:

    Full name of the student

    Date(s) or time of absence

    Specific reason for absence

Telephone numbers where parents/guardians may be reached (home and work)

    Signature of parent/guardian

Any student who is absent with an illness for more than three days must bring an official note signed by

their doctor to the main office when they return to school. The note must include the name of the

student, dates of absence and reason for absence. The note must be written clearly in ink on a doctors

    letterhead.

    Unexcused Absences

Colleges review absences in their evaluation of our students. Unexcused absences reflect poorly on

student conduct, so we strongly encourage students to minimize the number of unexcused absences

    they incur.

If a student does not arrive to school or class and we have not received notification of the absence from

a parent/guardian, the parent/guardian will be immediately contacted. If students are absent

frequently (excused or unexcused), a letter of concern will be sent home and if the absences continue, a

parent conference will be called to discuss a solution to the problem.

The following are some examples of missed school days that will be considered as unexcused absences:

    Family trips

Non-school related activities (e.g. sporting events, cultural activities, celebrations,

    performances)

    Truancy (non-attendance)

Any student who is absent from school without the permission of a parent or guardian and/or without

the knowledge and permission of KIPP NYC College Prep is consider TRUANT and may be subject to

disciplinary actions in school and/or by local authorities. Under New York State law, KIPP NYC College

Prep is required to report excessive truancy to the NYC Administration of Children Services (ACS).

    Make-up Work

A student who is absent from school, whether it be excused or unexcused, is responsible for all of the

work they are to complete on the day(s) they missed. The student/parents can request work from their

teachers through email, telephone calls, and/or peers. They may also make arrangements with their

Grade Level Dean of Students to have their work collected in which case the student or parent mustreach out to Mr. Capellan (9th - 347.880.3286), Mr. Powell (10th - 917.653.6261), or Mr. Harris (11th -

646.667.4184). The students will be given a grace period equivalent to the amount of days absent to

    complete missing work.

i.e. Two days absent equals two days to complete work.

    Tardiness to School

Lateness to school and to class will not be tolerated. School begins each day at 8:00 AM, and students

must arrive in the building by 7:50 AM. A student will be considered late to school if he/she arrives to

1st period even one second after 8:00 AM, and will serve detention the same day for 45 minutes. If a

student is going to be tardy, he/she must notify the office manager Marisela Guttierez at

773.414.4196. Upon late arrival, the student must report to the office and sign in before going to class.

Five late arrivals to school will equal one unexcused absence. Parents will be notified of the update

made to the students record. Please keep in mind students are allowed up to ten (10) total absences or

five (5) unexcused absences during the year without a need for the promotion committee to evaluate

the students progress at the end of the year.

  • 8/4/2019 KIPP NYC College Prep - Student and Family Handbook 2011-2012

    17/41

    17

    Tardiness to Class

Additionally, lateness to class is unacceptable. Any student who arrives late to class without a pass will

be marked as tardy. Any student, who is late more than three times to one class, will receive a 45

minute detention. After seven times being late, a meeting with the Deans and parents will be scheduled

and further disciplinary action will be discussed. If a student is late to multiple classes in one day it will

also result in an after school detention of 45 minutes.

    Signing Out Early

We strongly discourage parents or guardians from signing students out early for appointments or other

engagements which can be scheduled during school breaks, half days, or after school hours. Students

who must leave school early for unavoidable purposes must provide a written request with the reason

for leaving signed by a parent to the high school office. Family members must come to the Main Office

(Room 261) to sign students out if approved for early pick-up. Before students leave early, they are

responsible for collecting coursework/homework from every teacher. A Parent or Guardian must

authorize in writing on our Emergency Contact Form all additional family members who can sign their

child out of school. Students are responsible for any and all work missed when they are out of school. Itis not the teachers responsibility to track down students who have absence issues.

    Promotion and Retention

Students are allowed up to ten (10) total absences or five (5) unexcused absences during the year

without a need for the promotion committee to evaluate the students progress at the end of the year.

Attendance will be taken on all days that school is in session during the traditional school year,

orientation and summer school, and on appropriate Saturdays. If a student has ten or more total

absences or five unexcused absences during the year, a promotion committee made up of advisors and

grade level chairs will determine if the student is prepared for success at the next grade level. The

promotion committee may decide that a student will be retained in the same grade for the following

year for missing too much instructional time.

If a student misses a specific class a total of ten (10) times for excused reasons or cuts class five (5)

times; the student may be Denied Credit due to Absence (DCA) and receive a failing grade in that class.

The student may be required to repeat the class the following year or take summer school. If a student

has multiple failures, the promotion committee may decide that a student will be retained in the same

grade for the following year. Additionally, students will not qualify for the end of the year trips and

other rewards and opportunities due to severe attendance issues.

Illness or Injury during School Hours and Medication

Illness or Injury during School Hours

A students family will be contacted to pick their child up from school if a student becomes too ill to

remain at school. Family members must come to the Main Office (Room 261) to sign students out ifstudents are determined to be too ill to remain at school. A Parent or Guardian must authorize in

writing on our Emergency Contact Form all additional family members who can sign their child out of

school. In the case of severe illness or injury, emergency medical services will be called which may

include calling an ambulance and/or hospitalization.

Students are responsible for any and all work missed when they are out of school. Please refer to the

Make-up Work segment of the Student Handbook for further information.

Please note: we use the contact information provided on the Emergency Contact Form to notify a family

of their childs illness. A students emergency contact information should be kept current so we are able

to contact families regarding a students health in a timely manner. To make changes or update to a

students information you can contact the main office at 212-991-2626.

    Medication

KIPP NYC College Prep will not administer over the counter medications. KIPP NYC College Prep can

administer appropriate prescription medications in their original packaging to students with the written

consent of a parent/guardian. Parents/Guardians of students with special medical needs have to meet

with Elise Taylor, Office Manager, to provide detailed information regarding their childs medical need

and a letter from the doctor explaining how the medication should be administered. Please contact

Elise Taylor at 917.686.1218 if you have any additional questions or concerns.

    Discipline and Detention Policy

KIPP NYC College Prep recognizes that each individual student may have unique challenges facing them

in and out of the classroom. We strive to find solutions for all of our students; therefore, a variety of

disciplinary and supportive programs may be put in place. These are not limited to, but may include:

Progress Report - A plan where students have a progress report targeting specific behaviors and/or

academic support that each teacher fills out and the parents sign.

Detention Policy KIPP NYC College Prep High School has implemented detention in the disciplinary

policy to develop and correct the behavior of students. Parents will be notified before a student is

required to serve detention. Detention may be required for students having attendance issues,

behavioral problems, and/or homework issues. Detentions may be held by individual teachers or by the

Deans. Staff at KIPP NYC College Prep uses the following methods of detention:

AM Detention: AM detention is when a student is required to arrive at school earlier than the

required time. During this time they will reflect on the behavior they displayed that needs to be

corrected. Morning detention will be administered from 7:10am until 7:55am.

Lunch Detention: During lunch time students will be isolated from the rest of the students and

not be allowed to participate in the lunch activities. They will eat their food separately. Lunch

detention will be for the duration of their entire lunch period.

PM Detention: PM Detention will be administered towards the end of the day. Students are

responsible for getting themselves to detention on time. Therefore they are responsible for

letting their KIPP Block teacher know that they cannot stay late, if the activity is running late. A

student who reports to detention late will not be allowed to complete their detention and will

be required to return the next day and serve double the time.

Saturday School Detention: Saturday school detention will be administered from 9am-12pm.

Saturday detention will be used as a more severe consequence. This may include community

service in the school building and/or self-reflection.

In School Detention: In school detention is when a student needs to be isolated from the rest of

the student population to serve a consequence for an action. Often time when students skip

regular detention they will be assigned ISD. However, in school detention does not affect the

students record in the way a suspension will.

In-School Suspension - For extreme disciplinary actions (i.e.; fighting, stealing, cursing, major disruptions

or violent temper tantrums) or repeated offenses, students may spend all or a portion of the day in a

quiet, supervised, in-school suspension room. Students will be given class work to complete but will

not be able to attend class until a parent conference is completed.

Short Term Suspension - In accordance with New York State Law, the Principal reserves the right to

suspend and/or expel a student. A student who has committed any of the actions listed below, or other

similar infractions, is subject to short term suspension (defined as a period of five days or less).

Attempt to assault any student or staff member or fighting with another student

Vandalize school property causing minor damage

Engage in insubordination, which is directly and repeatedly violating school rules

Fail to complete assignments, carry out directions, or comply with disciplinary sanctions

Cheat on quizzes, exams, or commit plagiarism Used forged notes or excuses

Steal, attempt to steal, or possess property known by the student to be stolen

    Prep Dress Code

Commit any other act which school officials reasonably conclude disrupts the learning

    environment of the school

Repeatedly commit minor behavioral infractions which, in aggregate, may be considered an

infraction subject to formal disciplinary action

Procedures and Due Process for Short Term Suspension - Before imposing a short term suspension, thePrincipal shall provide notice to inform the student of the charges against him or her, and if the student

denies the charges, an explanation of the evidence against the student. A chance to present the

students version of events shall also be provided. At this point, written notice shall be provided within

48 hours of the decision to impose suspension at the last known address of the parents or guardians.

Where possible, notification also shall be provided by telephone. The parents or guardian of the student

and the student shall have the opportunity to present the students version of the incident and to ask

questions of the complaining witnesses. Such notice and opportunity for an informal conference shall

take place prior to the suspension of the student unless the students presence in the school poses a

continuing danger to persons or property or an ongoing threat of disruption to the academic process, in

which case the notice and opportunity for an informal conference shall take place as soon as possible

after the suspension as is reasonably practicable. Parents may be required to attend a reinstatement

meeting before a student returns to their classes. Failure to attend this meeting may compromise the

agreed upon next steps put into place by the school, and may cause students to miss additional class

    time.

Vandalize school property causing major damage

Commit any act which school officials reasonably conclude warrants a long-term suspension

Procedures and Due Process for Long Term Suspension - The Principal may impose a long-term

suspension. Such a suspension may be imposed only after the student has been found guilty at a formal

suspension hearing. In extreme circumstances, the Principal may expel the student from school. Upon

determining that a student's action warrants a possible long-term suspension, the head of school shall

verbally inform the student that he or she is being suspended and is being considered for a long-term

suspension (or expulsion) and state the reasons for such actions. The Principal also shall immediately

notify the student's parent(s) or guardian(s) in writing within 48 hours of suspension at the last known

address. Where possible, notification also shall be provided by telephone if the school has been

provided with a contact telephone number for the parent(s) or guardian(s). Such notice shall provide a

description of the incident or incidents which resulted in the suspension and shall indicate that a formal

hearing will be held on the matter which may result in a long-term suspension (or expulsion). The

notification provided shall be in the dominant language used by the parent(s) or guardian(s). At the

formal hearing, the student shall have the right to be represented by counsel, question witnesses, and

present evidence. Parents may be required to attend a reinstatement meeting before a student returns

to their classes. Failure to attend this meeting may compromise the agreed upon next steps put into

place by the school, and may cause students to miss additional class time.

Alternate Instruction - Students who are suspended will be provided with alternative instruction.

Arrangements will be made between the school and each individual for the delivery of services, pick-

up/delivery of work, and the make-up of any missed assignments and classroom instructional support.

All IDEA mandates will be followed for students with disabilities.

KIPP NYC College Prep High School NormsEvery KIPP NYC College Prep student is expected to conduct themselves in a manner that is appropriate

will be held to the following expectations every day at KIPP NYC College Prep:

    Classroom Norms:

Arrive on time, prepared to begin before the bell rings.

Enter the room quietly, be seated, and begin the assigned task.

Be engaged and on-task throughout the class period.

All assignments should be completed neatly and on time.

Exit the classroom quietly and calmly after you are dismissed by the teacher.

If you fail to abide by these norms, the teacher will take action to correct the issue as necessary.

Move calmly to and from each of your classes.

Quiet conversation is acceptable; loud, raucous conversation is not.

    Discard trash in containers provided.

Follow the direction of all school staff members. Every adult should be respected and listened

to just as we will listen and respect our students.

Do not engage in inappropriate physical contact of any type in the halls, including both

altercations and public displays of affection (PDA).

Do not engage in horseplay or use obscene or vulgar language.

    Bathroom Use Policy:

Bathroom use will be limited to after the first 10 minutes of class and before the last 10 minutes

    of class.

After respectfully asking your teacher for permission to use the bathroom, you should sign out

in your teachers logbook and quietly leave the classroom with the Hall Pass.

One student at a time may leave class to use the bathroom so please be mindful of your time

using the bathroom as other classmates may be waiting patiently for your return.

    Cafeteria Guidelines:

Breakfast and lunch are served only at designated times in the cafeteria. Students who use the cafeteriamust abide by the guidelines listed below:

Students must treat all food service staff, cafeteria supervisors, and fellow students with

The line in the cafeteria must be quiet and orderly at all times and students must present their

student ID to be scanned before receiving their food.

Students will be allowed to purchase items from the vending machines when their section of the

cafeteria is called to do so and not prior to the announcement.

Students are not permitted to order food from outside of the cafeteria unless under teacher

    supervision.

Dining spaces must be clean and neat upon student exit.

No student may leave the cafeteria to use the restroom without a pass.

If teachers would like to tutor during lunch, they must go down to the cafeteria to get their

students and bring them to their classroom in a quiet and organized way.

Students must exit the cafeteria in a quiet and orderly manner.

    Hallway Passes:

Three types of passes are used at KIPP New York City College Prep. Students traveling between

classrooms and other spaces at any time other than transition must carry a pass at all times.

    The three passes are:

Class hallway pass- for bathroom use

Teacher pass- for reasons of student movement such as individual

student/teacher/counselor or small group meetings, or to go to the Main Office .

Office pass - any student arriving late to school will receive an office pass to enter their

class. If students have medical or other needs that require them to go to the office,

they will receive an office pass to return to class.

Violation of the KIPP NYC College Prep Behavioral Norms can vary from a 45 min detention at the end of

a day to a Saturday School Detention depending on the kinds of inappropriate behaviors exhibited by

    the student.

    Lockers/Personal Belongings

Every student is issued a locker in the beginning of the school year. Students are responsible forproviding a lock that they will use to secure their locker. The locker is to help students secure their

personal belongings and valuables. If a locker issued to a student is malfunctioning in any way, it is the

responsibility of the student to inform the Deans at KIPP NYC College Prep that it needs to be replaced

or repaired. Please ensure that the lock that is placed on the locker is one of descent quality so that the

lockers can be protected. Locks are also sold in the Main Office for $5. In the event that a locker is

broken into, the Deans will attempt to figure out who broke the lock/locker and attempt to retain the

    belongings from the locker.

Personal Belonging and valuables are the responsibility of the student. They must monitor and care for

their own belongings. KIPP NYC College Prep is not responsible for lost belongings and valuables. Weask students to come to school with only what they need each day and to bring home any items that

they do not need at school.

    Bullying

Bullying is a widespread and serious problem that can happen anywhere. It is not a phase children have

to go through, it is not "just messing around", and it is not something to grow out of. Bullying can cause

serious and lasting harm. Some instances have led to serious emotional damage and even death.

Although definitions of bullying vary, most agree that bullying involves:

  • 8/4/2019 KIPP NYC College Prep - Student and Family Handbook 2011-2012

    26/41

    26

Imbalance of Power: people who bully use their power to control or harm and the people being

bullied may have a hard time defending themselves

Intent to Cause Harm: actions done by accident are not bullying; the person bullying has a goal

    to cause harm

Repetition: incidents of bullying happen to the same person over and over by the same person

    or group of people.

    Types of Bullying

Bullying can take many forms. Examples include:

    Verbal: name-calling, teasing

Social:spreading rumors, leaving people out on purpose, breaking up friendships

    Physical: hitting, punching, shoving

Cyberbullying: using the Internet, mobile phones or other digital technologies to harm others

Bullying is a very serious problem in our country and it will not be tolerated or taken lightly at KIPP NYC

College Prep. If a student is caught bullying another student, they are putting themselves in a position to

potentially get suspended or expelled. If a student is being bullied it is vital that they seek out the help

of a Dean or a Counselor to make sure that the issue is being taken care of accordingly. The emotional

safety of our students is very important and we plan to keep our students in a safe environment.

    Gangs/Drugs

One of the realties that our students deal with is that there are gangs with bad intentions and drugs in

the neighborhoods that we work in. Many of our students travel day in and out dealing with this reality.

We suggest that you have serious conversations with your children about gangs and drugs and the

consequences that could possibly come from involving themselves with these factors and also how to

protect themselves from an external factor.

In the event that a student is found to be involved with either gangs or drugs, the student will be

required to meet with a counselor to discuss next steps. The meeting will assist them with trying to

manage this problem so that it does not have an impact on their schooling. It is likely that the student

will be required to attend outside counseling as well. If a student participates in activities, involving

either drugs or gangs, during school hours they are putting themselves in a position where they could

face consequences such as being suspended or even expelled. KIPP NYC College Prep is an institution of

higher learning and we expect that these kinds of factors will be kept away from our community.

KIPP NYC College Prep Technology and Internet Use Policy

    Cell Phone/ Electronics Policies

Cell phones (as well as earpieces) and other electronic devices have become a major distraction in

schools. Unwanted picture taking, distractions, and disruptions during class time, cheating, cyber

bullying, and theft are among the reasons for them being banned. KIPP NYC College Prep High School

seeks to minimize these and other disruptions to the learning process through the following practice.

Students are encouraged NOT to bring cell phones or electronic devices to school. If students are seen

with these items within the school building or during a school sponsored event prior to regular school

dismissal time (excluding school events outside of the regular school time), they are to be confiscated

immediately. Upon confiscation, the device will be sent to the Deans office. Failure to give the cell

phone/device to any staff upon request will be considered insubordination resulting in further

disciplinary action. In the event that a cellular phone or electronic device is confiscated, students will be

eligible to pick up their cell phone at the end of that school day. In addition to needing to pick up their

phone the student will serve a 45-minute detention prior to receiving it.

We understand many of you have purchased cell phones for your children to be used in case of

emergencies, or just simply as a means to communicate with your child after school. However, it is not

permitted for cell phones to be used during school hours. Cell phones must be turned off before

students enter the school and phones must remain off if they are being brought into the building. If you

need to reach your child during the day, please call the main office at 212.991.2626.

It is highly recommended that students keep their phones in their bags or in their lockers. KIPP NYC

College Prep is NOT RESPONSIBLE for lost or damaged cellular phones and other electronic devices. If

you need a message relayed to your child please call the school directly or a KIPP NYC College Prep staff

member, not your childs cell phone.

Students are allowed to have cell phones with them for emergency use only during their

    commute to and from school.

Phones should not be visible and/or heard in hallway transitions or any classes.

If a student needs to make a phone call home they are to use the office phone after receiving

    permission from a staff member.

If a student is seen with a cell phone it will be confiscated by any staff member. If your childs

phone is confiscated on more than one occasion, the school reserves the right to not allow your

child to bring a cell phone to school at all.

o The first time the phone will be confiscated until the end of the day. Student will beresponsible for serving same day detention.

o The second time it will be confiscated and the students parent/guardian will need to

pick up the phone. Student will be responsible for serving same day detention.

o The third time the phone will be confiscated and the students parent/guardian will

need to pick up the phone. Student will be responsible for serving Saturday detention.

    IPODS/ MP3 Player Policies

If students choose to bring iPods and MP3 Players to school, they must turn them off and put

them away before entering school each day.

Exceptions will be made for iPods and MP3 players to be used during study hall hours as long as

    the privilege is not abused.

    Computer / Internet Use

Computers are used to support learning and enhance instruction. Students will use computers

frequently in their regular classrooms. However, all computer privileges depend on every student using

the technology in a responsible, efficient, ethical, and legal manner. A student may not:

Use the Internet for any illegal purpose

Use profane, obscene, impolite or abusive language

    Violate someone elses privacy

Share his/her password with anyone except adults at the school

Print excessively large documents without teacher permission

Use computers without staff supervision or permission

Download software, plug-ins, games or other programs without permission

Use chat rooms, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, or other personal social networking websites

Change Windows desktop, taskbar, screensaver, or any other computer settings

Access or change anyone else's data folders, files or documents

Send email or IM unless specified by a staff member

Eat or drink near a computer

Leave a laptop anywhere else but in mobile lab when done with it

Play non-education games on a KIPP computer

Students in violation of any of the above may be subject to disciplinary action including suspensionand/or expulsion.

    Social Networking

KIPP NYC College Prep encourages the use of technology for instruction and learning. Make sure to

monitor your childs activity online at home. An increasing number of students are engaging in social

networking on websites such as Facebook, AIM, MySpace, Twitter, HiFive, Bebo, Formspring, etc. Social

Networks are public and lack privacy, contrary to the belief of many students. In the Commitment to

Excellence form, students are made aware of the following point:

I will avoid people, places, and thingsboth inside and outside of schoolthat I know or should

know will not help me have a bright future.

Posting inappropriate information (text, images, videos) on social networks would represent one of the

things outside of school. Here are some reasons a student may be addressed, after posting

    inappropriate information on line.

If information posted on a social network is causing others on school grounds to feel

    emotionally unsafe.

    o Threats

    o Cyber Bullying

  • 8/4/2019 KIPP NYC College Prep - Student and Family Handbook 2011-2012

    29/41

    29

If a student has the school name tagged to their profile and has posted information that places

    the schools integrity in jeopardy.

o Information that is of a provocative nature.

o Information that hints towards the illegal usage of drugs, or alcohol.

o Information that hints towards participation in any illegal activity.

o Information that hints towards student involvement in gang activity.

o Information that in any way harms the reputation of the student, family, or school

    community.

It is important to note that any negative interactions by or between KIPP students on these social

networking sites will result in in-school consequences. The use of social networks in an inappropriate

fashion can be addressed in two different forms.

    A) A student posting information that is not appropriate may prompt a Counseling Session with one of

the school counselors, where a student may be asked to remove information off of their profiles.

Although the information is not gone it will be masked and not seen unless researched. A counselor

meeting with a student in reference to information about social networks is to help a student make

better decisions about how they present themselves inside of a public forum but also to develop

    some social intelligence.

    B) A student posting information that is not appropriate may prompt a meeting with the Deans that

will result in consequences. In most of these cases, these steps are taken when others in the KIPP

Community are made to feel emotionally or physically unsafe because of the material posted on the

social network. Also when, as mentioned above, the integrity of the school is put to jeopardy a

student may also be approached by a Dean.

    Protecting Your Privacy

We at KIPP want to stress the importance of protecting your privacy. As mentioned before, any

information posted on any social network is made public. Once the information is public anyone on the

social network has access to that information, whether they are your next door neighbor or they live in

China. It is important that all students are careful about the information you post because it can lead to

possible identity theft. Please avoid posting cell phone numbers, birthdates, social security numbers and

other information that may be private this is for your own protection and safety.

Ways to use Social Networks Correctly

Social Networks can be quite a powerful tool if used correctly. There are a couple ways one can use a

Social Network to benefit them. Here is how:

Connecting with peers to obtain needed information such as homework, dress code

    information, or school events.

Socialize in ways that are of a positive fashion.

Presenting ones self in a positive light to potential colleges and potential employers.

Be wise about how you use the internet and also how you use social networks. It can be a tool to use to

your benefit or a hurdle that gets in your way.
