14WHERE THERE’S A WILL

1 Prevention is better than cure, so girls with long hair should have their hair tied up in aplait or a ponytail and boys should try and keep their hair shorter.

2 If your child doesnt like having there hair tied up try buying some trendy accessoriesas this may help.

3 Check on a weekly basis for head lice, check at the base of the neck and behind theears as this is where the head is warmest and where the lice may be found.

4 Buy a good nit comb (fine toothed comb) use it on a weekly basis to help detect headlice.5 If you find eggs or head lice don’t panic go to your chemist and they will recommend a

good solution and tell you how to use it.6 Tea tree shampoo and conditioner are very good apparently lice absolutely loathe tea

tree, after washing your childs hair put on the conditioner, this makes it easier tocomb the wet hair with the nit comb. Do this every 3 to 4 days for 2 weeks after thelast live louse was seen.

7 Parents and close relatives keep an eye on your own hair as well as your childrens, it iscommon for head lice to be passed on to other family members.

8 Don’t be ashamed if your child comes home with head lice its very common and mostof us have been there at some point, just treat straight away and inform the school toprevent them spreading.

9 Most importantly be sure to emphasize to your child that although having lice cancertainly be an embarrassing nuisance , anyone can get them. It's important forchildren to understand that they haven't done anything wrong and that having licedoesn't make them dirty.

I hope this helps but if you have any problems don’t hesitate to get in touch with me atStyles by Mel in Park Street, Kingswinford 01384 404950 I will be happy to help.Mel xx

Now your children have returned to school, the bane of many parents life will be head lice, the head louse is a tiny, wingless parasitic insect that lives among human hairs and feedson extremely small amounts of blood drawn from the scalp. Although they may soundgross, lice (the plural of louse) are a very common problem, especially for kids ages 3 to12 years. An adult louse is no bigger than a sesame seed and is grayish-white or tan.Nymphs (baby lice) are smaller and become adult lice about 1 to 2 weeks after they hatch. Most lice feed on blood several times a day, but they can surviveup to 2 days off the scalp. With lice comes itching and scratch-ing caused by the bites. However, the itching may not alwaysstart right away, that depends on how sensitive your child's skinis to the lice. It can sometimes take weeks for kids with lice tostart scratching. They may complain, though, of things movingaround on or tickling their heads. Lice are highly contagious andcan spread quickly from person to person, especially in groupsettings like schools, nurserys, sleep overs, sports activities etc.Though they can't fly or jump, these tiny parasites have spe-cially adapted claws that allow them to crawl and cling firmly tohair. They spread mainly through head-to-head contact, butsharing clothing, bed linens, combs, brushes, and hats can alsohelp pass them along. Here are a few tips on how to keep thosedreaded head lice at bay and how to treat them if they do occur.

As Benjamin Franklin astutely observed only twothings in life are certain – death and taxes. Whilstwe have little or no control as to when we shedour mortal coil (and most of us have limited inputas to governmental fiscal policy) we can ensurethat we leave a properly drafted and executed lastWill and Testament. This will serve to give boththe Will writer (Testator) peace of mind and alsocertainty and security to family members at anoften upsetting and unsettling time.

Not that all Testators down the years have provenso considerate. Under his Will dated 25 March1616 William Shakespeare bequeathed to his wifehis “second best bed with the furniture” clearly re-vealing that there were no bounds to the gen-erosity of England’s best known playwrite. Therehave also been more egocentric and “puckish” Willbequests. In slightly more recent times the econ-omist Jeremy Bentham (in leaving a small fortuneto the University College ofLondon) did so on the provisothat his preserved corpse an-nually “attend” the board ofdirectors’ meetings. For manyyears after his death Benthamwas recorded in the minutesas:- “present, but not voting”.

Finalising a Last Will and Testament is one ofthose jobs we all intend to get round to but neverseem to have time (70% of the population do nothave a Will). Morgan & Co Solicitors of WollastonStourbridge therefore are hoping that their “Writea Will Week” and “Will Aid” campaigns will be justthe incentive that people need to put pen topaper.Morgan & Co have teamed up with ComptonHospice for “Write a Will week” which runs fromOctober 5-9 2009. During that week, instead ofpaying the solicitor the standard charge for thepreparation of a Will, clients will pay a reduced feeof £60.00, 50% of which will be donated to Comp-ton Hospice.

Alternatively, during the month of November Mor-gan & Co will be participating in the national “WillAid” campaign. Clients will be encouraged to makea donation of either £75.00, for a single person’sWill, or £130.00, for a pair of mirror or joint Wills. The seven charities who benefit under the Will Aidscheme are: ActionAid, British Red Cross, Chris-tian Aid, Help the Aged, NSPCC, Save the ChildrenUK, Sightsavers International, SCIAF and Trocaire.

Last year Morgan & Co raised in excess of£2000.00 for the Will Aid charities and are look-ing to better that this year along with assisting alocal charity in the form of Compton Hospice. Any-one interested in either of the above campaignsshould contact Morgan & Co by telephone on01384 440069 or via email on: [email protected].

TBy Philip Baulk of Ashwood Nurseries Ltd

Our third garden was Great Dixter near Nor-thiam, the home of the late ChristopherLloyd. The house is steeped in history, butit was the garden that I had read so muchabout and really looked forward to visiting.I was not disappointed. Again, this gardenhad many 'rooms', and each was packedwith plants. Christopher Lloyd was an ad-venturous gardener, always prepared to ex-periment with new ideas and new plantings. He loved bright colours, and somehow hewas able to mix them without the whole ef-fect becoming garish. His beds were plantedin such a way as to keep them filled with in-terest all year round, and if a gap were toappear, he would have something ready inthe pipe line to fill it with colour or foliagefor the rest of the season. Surrounding hiscultivated areas, and even leading up to thefront of the house were wonderful naturalmeadows, perhaps just passed their latespring glory, but still filled with ox-eyedaisies and wild meadow orchids. The gar-den is now a charitable trust, and spirit ofthis wonderful plantsman is still very muchin evidence and well maintained. We can certainly learn a lot by visiting othergardens, and gain some interesting ideas totry for ourselves. Much closer to home,John Massey has a superb private gardenbordering the Staffordshire and Worcester-shire canal, and situated alongside AshwoodNurseries, which he has run since 1967. Atthe turn of the millenium, he decided to useall his knowledge of plants to create a gar-den around his own home. The result is nowknown as 'John's Garden', and he opens itseveral times a year in aid of local charities.

his summer, my wife and I stayed in Ryein East Sussex for a few days and whilstthere, we took the opportunity to visit someof the outstanding gardens in that part ofEngland. Our first visit was to SissinghurstCastle Garden which was developed by VitaSackville-West and Sir Harold Nicolson, andis now owned by the National Trust. So pop-ular is this famous garden surrounding theElizabethan mansion that we were requiredto obtain a timed ticket to gain entry to thegarden itself, but once inside it was a de-light. It is comprised of many smaller, en-closed spaces, each quite different both indesign and planting, but for me, the shrubrows were the real highlight in mid-June.They were in their first flush of bloom, andon this really warm day, the perfumes ofsome of these old varieties filled the air. Itwas quite stunning and we were left withlasting memories a superb garden. Our second garden was Pashley Manor. Thisis a meticulously maintained garden sur-rounding a large half timbered mansion. The lawns and flower beds were very beau-tiful and full of colour, but surprisingly it wasthe vegetable garden which was reallyamazing, and in fact also a thing of beautyin it's own right. Here were rows upon rowsof almost perfect vegetables and soft fruit, together with trained fruit trees and stan-dard gooseberries laden with youngfruitlets. Within the fruit cages, red andblack currants were already ripening, aswere strawberries and raspberries. Everyrow of vegetables had a neatly written labelshowing the variety, and there was literallynot a weed in sight. It really was the mostperfect vegetable garden I have ever seen.

The nextopening is onSaturday 26thSeptember,between 10amand 4pm, withall entrance feesgoing to 'ActionHeart' based atRussells HallHospital.

Apart from supporting this very worthy localcharity, visitors can benefit from seeing theresult of all the experience which John hasgained in over forty years in horticulture, and which he now uses to such great effectin his own garden. It is well worth a visit.

THE BEST STARTA puppy’s education starts as soon as it is born and the rightenvironment in the first few weeks of life is vital. The bestplace for a puppy to begin their lives is in the home; after all, this is where most dogs will end up spending most of their time. This way they are regularly exposed to the noises and smells of abusy household. It is also important that young pups have regularinteraction with different people, so they get used to being handledand picked up by strangers. This is also the time when pups startto learn ‘doggy manners’ and how to interact with others of theirown kind, through the rough and tumble of play with their littermates.Ideally pups should stay with the litter and mum until 8 weeks of age, leaving earlier could mean they miss out on valuable lessons ofacceptable canine behavior. Do check, when you visit a breeder, thatthey are doing their best to achieve all this.

HOMEWORKOnce you bring your new puppy home, you must continue their ed-ucation and socialisation. A young dog cannot go out and meet theworld until a week after their second vaccination, so you have to bring the world to meetthem! Usually there is no shortage of volunteers to pop round and meet the new additionto the family and this good as the dog will start to view visitors to the home a positivething. Ensure they meet lots of different people, in particular children and the elderly, bothof whom behave differently to normal adults. People wearing sunglasses, carrying um-brellas and those in wheelchairs are useful experiences too. A pup can have full access toyour garden so long as it is secure and this is the best place to start learning to sit, stayand recall. Try to keep contact with other dogs to a minimum until after the second vac-cine but it is a good idea for a young pup to meet dogs you know and trust (and who arefully vaccinated themselves) before they meet strange ones in the big wide world.

GOING TO SCHOOLTraining classes are an excellent idea for young dogs. Not only do they learn commandsand you learn control, which can really enhance your relationship with your pet, they getto meet, and learn to behave around, strange dogs. However, there is no national recog-nised qualification for dog trainers so you do have to be careful with classes as anyone canset one up. Word of mouth is usually the best way to find a good class, or ask at your localvets. Also, when you go judge for yourself. A good trainer should have the class calm andunder control and they should also take the time to help the more difficult dogs, not leavethem to one side or ban them altogether, as many do.

If you have questions about this or any other pet related subject, you should contact your local vet.Cat is the resident vet for petstreet.co.uk, an on-line social networking site for animal lovers

It’s that time of year again, the summer holidaysare over and its time to go back to school. We allknow how important education is for our children, but what about for our dogs? The right trainingand start in life can make all the difference in ayoung pup and help prevent problems when theyget older.
