It was through working with territorial soldiers that gave him the ideafor his new career. Stu said: “A Sikh soldier in the unit had published abook about the history of turbans. The image he used on the cover wasof a stained glass window of a Sikh Soldier from the halls at Sandhurstentitled ‘Afghanistan 1919’.

“This got me thinking about how the traditionof commemorating our armed forces unitsand people through stained glass – oncecommon – has fallen away and that therewas definitely a gap in the market to makeit accessible to people once again.

“This was something that I knew I could do,I knew I had the expertise in art, designand the ability to construct bespoke stainedglass mixed with a detailed knowledge andunderstanding of the British Army and itstraditions and culture.

“I therefore decided to pursue a career instained glass after the leaving Army.Although military and heraldic work is whatI am keen to get involved I am trained inall areas of stained glass design andconstruction and can replace or refurbishany size door or window or produce abespoke lampshade, table decoration or apiece to hang on the inside a window.

It seems a simple enough task, to be able to tell when your pet is in pain butactually it can be a lot harder than you think. Animals have been programmedover millions of years of evolution to hide when they are sore or in discomfort,otherwise predators and competitors would pick up on the signs and target them.So, as owners, we need to be vigilant to quite subtle changes in our pet’sbehaviour that could indicate they are in pain, and ensure they don’t suffer insilence.

DEPRESSION

Most of us assume that if an animal is inpain they will cry out or whine but actuallythe opposite is true. Chronic (low gradeand continual) pain is very depressing andoften animals learn to cope with it andshow few outward signs of a problem,other than maybe being quieter thannormal or sleeping more. The problemwith is that this sort of pain is common inolder pets, for example with arthritis, andthis is what we expect them to do anyway.However, even in excruciating pain ourpets can be very quiet and withdrawn.I once saw a cat with a very badly brokenleg who had managed to drag himselfhome, curl up in his basket and was socalm his owner didn’t think he was in anydiscomfort, until she saw the x-rays!

LAMENESS

A very common sign of leg pain, frompulled muscles to arthritis, is limping.Other than this the pet can seem quitewell and cheerful, and often won’t respondto the leg being moved about or felt,which can lead to their owners thinkingthey aren’t in any pain, when nothingcould be further from the truth!Lameness is a very common problem andif it lasts more than 24 hours (even if it isintermittent) the pet should always bechecked over by a vet.

Often with this type of pain, it is not untilyou give your pet some pain killers, andsee the difference in their behaviour, thatyou realise how sore they were in the firstplace.

HOW CANYOU TELLIFYOUR PET IS IN PAIN?

Our pet’s can’t speak for themselves andin many cases are too brave for their owngood; trying to pretend that everything isfine when in fact they are in pain andsuffering. So, all good owners should bealert to the small changes that couldindicate a big problem and make surethey get them treatment they need anddeserve.

SMELLY BREATH

All pets have smelly breath to somedegree (!) but halitosis can often be theonly sign, without looking in their mouths,which some pets are reluctant to let theirowners do, of painful teeth problems.Often people assume if their pet is eatingthen they aren’t in any dental pain butthis isn’t the case, as an animal’s drive toeat will always overcome any soreness.In fact, if a pet does stop eating becauseof mouth pain, it is likely to beexcruciating and will have been there forsome time. Other signs of mouth paininclude tartar build up on the teeth andswollen gums. If you are concerned, mostvets run free dental clinics, so give them aring and pop along.

WEIGHT LOSS

Our smaller pets, like rabbits and guineapigs, are even better than cats and dogsat hiding when they are sore because, asprey animals, if they show any signs ofbeing ill, they will be quickly singled outby predators. So their owners have to beeven more vigilant to spot problems. Infact, it is not uncommon for these pets tobe brought into our clinics close to death,their owners distraught that they havemissed signs of a problem or thinking theyhave fallen ill very quickly, when it is morelikely they have been poorly for a whilebut have managed to hide theirsymptoms. However, one thing whichalways happens if these animals are inpain or poorly is that they will lose weight,even if they appear to be eating normally.So, weighing your small pets regularly is agreat way of monitoring them and anychanges in a downward direction shouldalways be taken seriously.

I always think that March is a trickymonth.

During the first couple of weeks at least,the potential for severe frost is still presentas is the risk throughout the month ofsudden hail or sleet showers, but equallythe days can be really warm and sunnyprompting daffodils and other early bulbs tospring into bloom. Then there are Marchwinds which can be cold and sometimesdestructive, so there is a lot to contendwith. Gardeners are chomping at the bit bynow, anxious to get started on the manytasks that lie ahead, but as always, a littlecaution is needed so that we do not getahead of ourselves.

One job that you can safely do this monthis prune your roses. I usually wait until Ican see the large white and purple crocusescome into flower (yellow ones usually flowerslightly earlier) and this is my signal thatthe time is right. Prune out old and crossingbranches completely, and then cut back lastyear's growth to one or two strong growthbuds. Generally floribunda roses do notneed to be pruned quite as hard as hybridteas. Climbing roses can again have lastyear's growth cut back to one or two buds,and as for rambling roses, well they shouldhave been done last year, immediately afterflowering. If this didn't happen, then try toremove some of the older stems completelynow and tie in all the younger growthbecause this is going to produce by far themost flowers. Go a little more gently onstandard roses, ensuring that you end upwith a nice tidy balanced head, alwayspruning to an outward facing bud whereverpossible, and after you have completedyour pruning, don't forget to apply somerose fertilizer or some fish, blood and bone.After all, you areexpecting your rosesto do a lot ofgrowing, andflowering, in thec o m i n gmonths.

If you are lucky enough to have a vegetablegarden, then you should complete yourdigging as soon as possible, leaving theground rough for a while to allow theweather to break down any clods. Marchwinds can in fact help to dry the soilsurface and this will make it easier to workdown into a fine tilth, ready for sowing andplanting. If you want to warm the soilbefore sowing, peg down a sheet of blackpolythene which will absorb the sun's raysmore quickly. If however, the soil is reallytoo wet to work properly, then do wait a fewmore days before venturing onto it.

If you are one of the very many gardenerswho like busy lizzies, then I am afraid thatthis year you are in for a bigdisappointment. Whether you buy smallplugs or larger tray plants, most goodnurseries will not be stocking them thisyear. They have been struck down by awidespread disease called 'downy mildew',which causes mouldy undersides andyellowing of the leaves, defoliation andeventually death of the plant. Even healthyplants can be affected and will very quicklysuccumb to this very virulent disease. Evengrowing your own from seed will not giveyou any immunity from downy mildewwhich can carry over in the soil from oneyear to the next.

I would suggest bedding begonias orpetunias as good alternatives. With jubileeyear already upon us, many parks andpublic places will be very patriotic this yearand will be designing flower beds andhanging baskets with a red, white and bluetheme. Petunias offer all of these coloursand many of the newer varieties are veryweather resistant. There are many lobeliasthat would also be ideal in both blue andwhite, alyssum and bacopa are usefulwhites and you can get ageratum in a nicesoft blue. For scarlet, the very traditionalgeraniums or perhaps salvias will do thejob, but there are many other possibilities.Whatever you decide to grow, if you arebuying plug plants, do keep them in a verylight place with gentle warmth to keep themgrowing nice and steadily.

We are only just into March and already mythoughts are turning to a summer garden,full of vibrant colour. I must come back toreality, put on some thick gloves, grab apair of secateurs and get the roses pruned.
