Thermal propertiesKingspan insulated sandwich panels with rigid IPN foam core show proven, excellent and almost
constant thermal insulation properties throughout their life cycle. The reason they are so effective is
that high performance insulation is an integral part of the panel system, so excellent U-values are
guaranteed.
Correctly installed, Kingspan insulated panels guarantee complete gas and vapor tight seal,
thus qualifying the system to be used in controlled atmosphere environments
Integral IPN core of tightly packed cells eliminates the appearance of air gaps within the in-
sulation
The tongue and groove joint interfi t to achieve excellent thermal performance. There are no
air gaps (and thermal bridges) along the joint
Reduced thermal loss (gain) results in considerable energy and cost savings
Kingspan insulated panels’ thermal and structural properties, as well as the wide range of available
panel thicknesses, uniquely qualify KS1150 TL, TF and TC panels for use in all types of applications
– chilled store, deep freeze, food processing – which require a controlled temperature environment
(“box in box” assembly)

Temperature gradient within the panel structure. In buildings
with external roof and wall envelope, the exterior face of the panels
is exposed to direct sunlight, especially during the summer season.
Therefore the temperature of the panel surface may rise up to 55ºC
- 80ºC depending on the exterior color of the panel. This causes a
large heat gradient between the exterior and interior surface of the
panel, which must be taken into account in the thermal design of the
building. Such a large heat gradient also implies signifi cant stress
within the panel, which must be accounted for when designing the
load-bearing structure of the building. It is recommended that de-
signers consult Kingspan Technical Services when designing such
buildings.
Air pressure considerations. The process of cooling or thawing of large quantities of food stored in air-
tight spaces causes considerable alterations in air pressure due to the contraction/expansion of theinterior
atmosphere. Rapid pressure changes may result in damages of the insulated box system, and in extreme
cases (eg. self contained boxes) in collapse of the structure. Therefore, especially in case of panel enve-
lopes operating in negative temperatures, compensatory pressure valves need to be installed into walls or
ceilings. The dimensions and the number of the valves shall be determined by a specialist.

Fire performance
Insulated panels – fi re resistance classifi cation
Fire resistance of non-loadbearing exterior walls is tested in accordance with European Norm
EN 1364-1. The purpose of the test is to assess the material’s performance as a barrier to fi re pen-
etration through the sampled building material.
Fire resistance criteria
Fire classifi cation of a product is a result of fi re resis-
tance tests carried out in accordance with pertaining
tests standards (EN). Classifi cation of the fi re resis-
tance is defi ned in EN 13501-2 “Fire classifi cation of
construction products and building elements – Part 2:
Classifi cation using data from fi re resistance tests, ex-
cluding ventilation services”, and is expressed in spe-
cifi c characteristics:
A product must achieve required fi re resistance characteristics in order to be classifi ed
as applicable for specifi c types of building construction.
1. Non-loadbearing walls – internal and external – are classifi ed according to E or E + I crite-
ria (integrity and insulation); additionally this classifi cation may include W and M (mechanical
resistance) criteria
2. Ceilings are classifi ed according to E criteria
3. Roofs are classifi ed according to the R + E + I criteria (loadbearing capacity, integrity and
insulation). For roof panel installations criteria R + E are suffi cient.

European Fire Performance Classifi cation
The reaction to fi re classifi cation is outlined in the European Norm EN-13501-1 “Fire classifi cation of
construction products and building elements – Part 1: Classifi cation using test data from reaction to fi re
tests”. Six primary classes are defi ned, where class A1 denotes the highest level of performance associ-
ated primarily with inorganic materials, whereas class F indicates a material with essentially no resistance
to ignition from a small fl ame.
Supplementary classifi cation is defi ned for smoke emission and fl aming droplets performance.
Based on these criteria Kingspan insulated panels achieve B-s1,d0 rating.
Insurers assessment
Kingspan insulated panels have been declared “fi re safe” by property insurers.
Kingspan panel systems have been tested and approved to European and country specifi c standards and
comply with all building regulations. Furthermore, they comply with the property insurance risk require-
ments of LPCB (Loss Prevention Council Board in the UK) and the FM Global insurance company as fol-
lows:
To comply with specifi c fi re test standards, no fl ash over or fi re propagation occurs.
No fl ame spread occurs within the panel core.
Kingspan Firesafe® roof and wall systems are secured to the main/secondary frame members of the
structure to protect fi re fi ghters.

Fire regulations concentrate primarily on human life and health safety. However, a fi re that poses no
threat to human life or health may still result in severe fi nancial losses. The use of building
solutions dramatically reduces costs and damages resulting from fi res:
• Reduces inventory losses
• Contains direct damages to building structure
• Prevents revenue loss
• Prevents destruction of archives and documentation
• Contains production losses
• Helps eliminate the threat of losing market position
• Offers a possibility to reduce insurance premiums

During loading and unloading by forklift, panels should
not be damaged by fork impacts and also there
should be enough span between fork supports in
order to avoid unacceptable defl ection of panels.
The pallets should be unloaded on site by a suitable
crane, using strapping, not cables. A load distribution
apparatus ( as shown ) should be used for long panels
and care should be taken for lifters not to crash the
sides of panels. Touching edges need to be protected
The panels must be carried edge-wise to avoid bend-
ing and the female part of the male-female joint should
not be used as a hand-grip.
93 COLD STORE PRODUCTS
Panels should be cut to size by using a suitable
compass saw or circular hand saw.The sawing blade
should cut the metarial cold, so that the panel surface
is not damaged.
Panels should be kept sloppy if there is no closed
storage so that the rainwater should not accumulate.
Stacked storage for long periods ( more than 4 weeks
) must be avoided.
The protective fi lm put on the panels at the factory
should be removed immediately after installation and
certainly not later than two weeks.
Warning: Long term storage of the panels with protec-
tive fi lm may damage the coating.
Warning: It is customer’s responsibility to protect the
panels against fi re risks both during storage at site and
installation stage.
Handling Instructions
COLD STORE PRODUCTS 94
The calculation regarding the loading capacity of cold
store panels are made by taking its own weight and
temporary service load during the assembly, into con-
sideration. Air conditioning equipment or such devices
should not be installed in Wall and Roof Panels.
In addittion, personnel shouldn’t be allowed to walk
on panels and materials shouldn’t be moved by using
panels.
Warning: Do not forget to use Pressure
Compensation Valve in your cold stores.
The bottom support span should not be wider than
150 cm when packs are to be stacked on top of each
other. A maximum of two packs are recommended
in a pile. The panel’s surface should be kept clear of
dust and direct sunlight. They should be stored on
fl at, clean and hard surface and preferably in covered
places, at job site. Condensation should be avoided
with suffi cent aeration, leaving the cover open a little
at the top but ensuring that the wind cannot blow it
off. Water must not be allowed to condense or enter
between the panels, since it can cause corrosion.
