Black History & the English Department

Year 8 students have been celebrating Black History Month in English, considering persuasive features and making their own positive posters around Diversity. Students have been inspired by the powerful poetry of Langston Hughes, with 'I, Too,' and John Agard's 'Checking Out Me History'. Boosting their speaking and listening skills, students have also created their own PowerPoints on each letter of Cliff Joseph's 1969 artwork 'Blackboard': from Ashanti to Zulu, via Black Power, Uganda and Patrice Lumumba. We hope students enjoyed their week as much as we did.

Last month we had various events to celebrate Black History Month. We arranged a variety of cultural food, music and activities in the pod every lunchtime. Staff even dressed in cultural attire. Everyone had a lovely time.

Kingsdale are Champions

of High Achievement! of High Achievement!

This summer 2017 Kingsdale

accomplished a momentous and unique achievement with,

almost, certainly, the most successful students at both A level and GCSE in the country

with Jacob Lundie-Fallon achieving an amazing 5A*s in his A level exams and Elba Feo

achieving a phenomenal 18A*s or better in her GCSEs.

Approximately one third of all grades achieved at Kingsdale

were A*/A, nearly two thirds were A*- B and over 85% were

A*- C. Once again we expect progress made by students at A Level to be in the top 5% in

the country. Performance of students in Applied and Technical courses was

outstanding with an average grade approaching a

Distinction*. Almost 50% of Kingsdale graduates have secured

places at prestigious Russell Group Universities and another 25% are going to highly

esteemed 1994 Group Colleges.

Well done to all our students, Parents and Staff!

House Film Club Celebrated Black History Month.

We featured two films that were shown during this celebratory month. In addition to 'Hidden Figures’ and 'Race', we took on board some of the many recommendations made by our parents. These included ‘Akeelah and the Bee' which

tells the story of an 11 year old spelling enthusiast living in South Los Angeles who discovers she has a talent for spelling and which she hopes will take her to the National Spelling Bee. Despite her mother's objections, Akeelah doesn't give up on her goal. She finds help in the form of a mysterious teacher, and along with overwhelming support from her community, Akeelah might just have what it takes to make her dream come true. This film about her determination against all the odds of race and inequality. Other films added for our Black History Month schedule by our parents were ‘42’, a powerful story of Jackie Robinson the baseball player who broke the USA’s Major League Baseball’s Colour barrier when he joined the roster of the Brooklyn Dodgers. We also showed The Long Walk to Freedom,

the story of Nelson Mandela and Gifted Hands about a Detroit native Ben Carson who overcomes poverty and prejudice to become a neurosurgeon.

Frieze Art Fair 2017

Last half-term Years 12 and 13, Art, Textiles & Photography students went to the Frieze Art Fair. They had a private tour of some specialist projects, as well as viewing the rest of the fair. It was fantastic for them to see a huge range of contemporary art in real life.

Year & Boys Football - South London Cup

The year 7s first competitive cup game was an amazing defeat of Bolingbroke with a final

score of 12 – 0 Goals: 5– Zak, 3- David, 3- Tobias, and 1- Nana. Man of the match: Sam. It was a great win for the boys – we look forward to many more victorious cup games!

Sports scholars smash

Wembley

On Thursday 5th October, 60 sports scholars embarked on an exciting trip to Wembley Stadium to watch the European football qualifier against Slovenia. The Three Lions left it until the final minutes of the game to entertain us with a pitch invasion and a well awaited goal. When the goal was scored Wembley Stadium erupted - an experience that will not be forgotten anytime soon.

Year 12 explore future possibilities! On the 6th October, Year 12 students were invited to attend The “What Career and What University Live”

Exposition at the Hammersmith Olympia. With hundreds of stalls present offering advice on university options and career pathways, the day gave our Year 12s a comprehensive insight into the range of options that students may take after their time at Kingsdale has drawn to a close. A wonderful day was had by all, with many feeling inspired by the possibilities that lay ahead!

6

During the week our Year 8 students had a wonderful experience with the Young Enterprise team.

Their task was to set up in their own fictitious business. Each business had to be costed, given a brand name, directors appointed including a business manager financial director and managing director. Each group had to give a presentation based on how they would develop their business and how it would be promoted. In addition they had to come up with a slogan for the business, a logo and also design the uniform for that business. These workshops were designed to encourage the students to develop their creative, communicative skills and teamwork approach to problem solving. We know that many of them will become leaders for a future society. They were thoroughly engaged and great ambassadors for the school. Well Done Year 8.

On Tuesday 26th September it was the European Day of Languages. To celebrate Kingsdale’s diverse student and staff body, different activities ran throughout the week. Portions of pupils’ lessons were taught in another language, registers were taken in multiple languages, and pupils searched the school on a Languages fact-finding mission. Questions included: “Where was the scientist Marie Curie from?” and “Find a person in the school who has the same name as the capital of Bulgaria”. On European Day of Languages itself, members of staff wore badges indicating which European and world languages they could speak. After successfully completing the Quick-Fire Quiz asking pupils to track down members of staff who could speak specific languages, congratulations goes to Hazel Blundell, Maria Korsell and Anaya Shah.

The Kingsdale English Department loves poetry. We live it and breathe it, and if necessary, we apply it as a healing balm to cuts and bruises. As such, National Poetry Day was a real treat for us. Across the school, junior English classes dove into projects centred on this year’s theme: freedom. The results were intelligent, frequently funny, and often highly political. The most visually appealing poetry came from the Metro Projects, in which students cut up newspapers and reassembled words. They remixed the mainstream media in ways that were subversive, creative, and, in many cases resembled Art School ransom notes fighting against politics and capitalism. The most eye-catching entries will be displayed on the walls around the Department in the coming weeks. Thanks to everyone who was involved!

Year 9 at the Sargent Exhibition

Dulwich Picture Gallery

On Tuesday 19th September, a selected group of year 9 Art students had the opportunity to visit the Dulwich Picture Gallery and respond to the current exhibition ‘Sargent: The Watercolours’. They visited the exhibition and then took part in practical workshop with the gallery educators. This was an excellent opportunity for the students to interact with art in a gallery setting and to develop their GCSE Art portfolios.

Last month 24 students from years 9 & 10 studying French took part in a 5 day trip to Normandy and Paris. The students immersed themselves in local history, culture and cuisine, buying their own food from authentic markets, visiting the D-Day landing beaches and even eating snails! The final leg of the trip included an ascent of the Eiffel Tower, a boat cruise on the Seine and a day out to Parc Astérix. Ils ont tous profité du séjour! Bravo Kingsdale

Kingsdale are Big Draw

Winners!

In the autumn term 2016 all students in Year 7 & 8 took part in the ‘Big Draw Awards’. The ‘Big Draw’ is a prestigious international art festival and competition

and since launching in 2000, the festival has taken place in 28 countries around the world, engaged over 3 million people and even clocked up two world records. All Year 7 & 8 students worked collaboratively to create an ‘Installation of

Inventions’ in which each student carefully decorated an object or invention in order to portray its value and function. We brought all the objects together to create a giant installation of over 600 objects. The results of which have been displayed in the Atrium

since November 2016. We are delighted to announce that Kingsdale Foundation School are Big Draw Winners. At the awards ceremony, which took place on the 25th July 2017 we were awarded the ‘Secondary School Award’ and

received a cheque for £750. To win a ‘Big Draw Award’ is an enormous achievement. Many congratulations to all Year 7 & 8 students!

Kingsdales’s new Year 7 students at Summer School 2017

Kingsdale ran its traditional Summer School for the new Year 7s. This was a wonderful opportunity for them to meet their peers, get to know the school and take part in a number of educational and social activities. These activities included team building games, dance and baking. The students also visited Lego land and Regents Park Zoo.
