Thursday, February 16, 2012 Year 6 Medieval Day On Wednesday, Year 6 participated in the activities of Medieval Day which was presented by Living History Australia Pty Ltd. While it was a fun and entertaining day for the students, it was also very informative enhanc- ing their knowledge and understanding of events and people from history. Included was a performance by Roland, Arwen and Matt in the auditorium where they dressed up as a monk, knight, noble lady, inquisitor and warrior. There was an inquisition where Josiah Morey was pulled out from the crowd as an her- etic! A combat display was viewed in the COLA, plus the students enjoyed outside acitivities of dance and archery. The ‘hands-on’ activity al- lowed the students to hold swords, helmets, chainmail and shields amongst other things. A great day was had by all and we would like to thank Living History Australia Pty Ltd for coming along and teaching the Year 6 students all about the medieval times.

Early Learning Programs Primary

“You be the mother, I’ll be the dad”

As young children engage in imaginative play they are learning to make sense of the world around them, to un-derstand the role of mother, baby, father or doctor, to de-velop their interests e.g. trains or simply to connect with a friend, share joys and delight in new discoveries.

Parenting with PowerScripture of the week: He

who loves his son disciplines him promptly.

~ Proverbs 13:23-25

Punishment or DisciplineHave you ever thought about the difference be-

tween punishment and discipline? There’s really quite a difference. Punishment gives a negative con-sequence, but discipline means to teach. Punishment is negative; discipline is positive. Punishment focuses on past misdeeds. Discipline focuses on future good deeds. Punishment is often motivated by anger. Dis-cipline is motivated by love. Punishment focuses on justice to balance the scales. Discipline focuses on teaching, to prepare for next time. The child who teases relentlessly, the child who whines for a snack and the child who bickers with his brother, all have one thing in common: a need to change patterns of behaviour and a need to change the heart. Some par-ents only use punishment or anger to motivate their children to act differently. This attitude says, “If I just point out the problem enough times, he’ll eventually change.” What these kids really need is firm correc-tion with a positive focus. Be sure to tell your children what they should do in place of the unwanted behav-iour. Teach them right responses to replace the nega-tive ones. Have them practise doing the right thing before they are free to go. It takes more work to disci-pline instead of punish but the rewards are certainly worth it. Children grow and develop new patterns of healthy responses.

Strategy for the week: What have you done with your children to teach them in the midst of a conflict? This week, focus on discovering the underlining prob-lem and seek to teach and develop your children’s strat-egies for self control, insight and problem solving when tough times arise.

~ In His service, Klaus Knobloch and Rosemary Whincop

SecondaryJesus is my Valentine

Children’s PoemJesus is my Valentine; I talk to Him each day.

He never, never leaves me; and always listens when I pray.

Yes He is my Valentine; there is no love like His.

He is the heart of all that is; for Him I breathe and live.

He’s a Valentine that never lies; never hurts or breaks.

He always has forgiven me; for all my past mistakes.

If you only knew my Valentine; You would love Him too.

For His love is always perfect; His love is always true.

So if your heart is longing; for a love that never ends,

for someone that is faithful; you know you can depend,

call upon my Valentine; He’ll wash away your sin. He will be your Valentine;

and your dearest, dearest friend.~ Susan Y Nikitenko ~

So, what do you think? Hopefully, we will all think of Valen-tine’s Day in a very different light from now on. Perhaps instead of thinking about what gifts may be coming our way on Valen-tine’s, we will firstly think of the gifts we have been given by Jesus.

Happy parenting. I wish you Jesus. A choice to make. Remem-ber God’s esteem. Ideal Valentine.

~ Rhonda Bevan, Head of Secondary

GeneralForgiveness!Quote from Power New Testament

Let’s say you ask for forgiveness for doing a bad thing. You ask for forgiveness and forgiveness is given! You still feel bad and you go back to God and ask forgiveness again. God will say, “What bad thing? My Son took it away; now go and live for Me! When you are forgiven, you are clean!” “But thanks to God’s gift of unde-served grace, He freely accepts us and sets us free from our sins because of Christ Jesus”. Count on it! Romans 3:24

Until I saw this poem, I must admit that I had never thought of Jesus as a Valentine. However, when you think about it, He is the ideal Valentine.

Anaphylaxis Dear Parents,Across the college, we have a number of children who suffer

from life-threatening anaphylaxis. Although allergic reactions to food are common in children, severe life-threatening reac-tions are uncommon and deaths are rare. However, for children who suffer food-induced anaphylaxis, the result could be fatal. Children at King’s may have severe reactions to a variety of prod-ucts including, but not limited to, nuts, fish, milk, eggs and latex. While we realise we can not control everything, we ask you to think carefully when preparing lunches and snacks for school, es-pecially in the prep and lower primary departments, where chil-dren love to share. We ask specifically that if possible you avoid packing peanut butter sandwiches or bars which contain nuts.

We thank you for your assistance in this matter. ~ Andrea Webb, College Nurse

they can come and try it out.Learne Hawkins, [email protected]@vpweb.com.au

Medication SafetyParents are reminded that students are not to carry medica-

tion on their person, including paracetamol. It is easy to think that students are responsible enough to carry

and administer their own medication, however, it is equally easy to overmedicate with dramatic effects.

We have a large campus which enjoys the integration of stu-dents of all ages, from age four to young adults. Medication can be easily dropped or misplaced and one of our younger students may find it and inadvertently consume it.

As staff and parents, we have a responsibility to look after each and every student on our campus. I ask parents to assist us by ensuring all medication is handed in to the college clinic for our staff to administer and ensure its safe storage.

NB: Medication must be accompanied by parental consent and have a pharmacy label attached. Medication authority available on website or from clinic.

Thank you for your assistance in these matters. ~ Andrea Webb, College Nurse

SecondaryYear 12 Camp

Year 12 camp was held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

last week at QCCC Tamborine Mountain. The Year 12s were ready to make the most of every opportunity with this being their last camp. The activities on offer ranged from bushwalking, to high ropes, to lawn bowls and of course the famous obstacle course.

The first night was the garbage bag formal. All of the students

really got into dressing up in their garbage bags and helping each other with the final touches on their outfits. Students re-sponded very well to the night’s proceedings… a ‘Cinderella Ball’ evening filled with perfect manners, a fashion parade and a disco. Following this was a devotional time with Pastor Guy.

Year 12 camp, as has been for the past few years, was themed around the concept of ‘Choices’. It was designed to push students both physically and spiritually. Devotions were a fantastic end to both nights at camp. Students enjoyed the time praying with and for their friends.

After three fun filled days, the students returned home tired,

but with many great memories of their last ever high school camp.
