FROM THE PASTORGreetings,

Through the efforts of the Parish Council, the Building Committee, and the Finance Council, we undertook three projects here at Christ the King--the new Immaculata Center, the Athletic Complex, and the restoration of the Preschool building. I appreciate the input of all those associated in any way with these projects, particularly WHLC Architecture, Belfor, and Mobile Forest Products.

An Athletic Complex of our own has been something we have wanted for some time at Christ the King. If it weren’t for the engineering efforts of Gary Cowles, and the construction efforts of Fred Corte, we would still be without an athletic complex.

We are very proud of our new Immaculata Center. I don’t mind telling you I was on edge the last two weeks prior to February 12, because I thought it would not be ready on time. Mike Jones, the superintendent for Langan Construction, assured me just about every day for those last two weeks that it would be ready on time. Sure enough, Mike was right. It’s good to have people like that! John Crane has been like Coach Nick Saban as we progressed through all three projects.

I take this opportunity to draw your attention to the fact that there is a memorial to Rusty Cowles in the new Athletic Complex. The memorial is located at the scoreboard. As part of the memorial dedication, Rusty’s football jersey, number 11, has been retired.

Thank you parishioners for your continued support which is greatly appreciated. In Christ,

PARISH LIBRARY: THE RUNDOWN The Lord is here, come and read Him

Comments by Publishers and Others – R. Reid

Comments: To be one of six children to meet with a Lady dressed in shimmering blue, a Lady with secrets, a Lady requesting prayers for peace, a Lady with a backdrop of uninterrupted blue, a

Lady whose presence you don’t want to leave, whose presence you are drawn to along with the anticipation of the writer, none other than the Blessed Virgin Mary,

how good is that? It was in this small Yugoslavian village, Medjugorje, that these apparitions began in 1981 and continue to this day. The autobiography of Mirjana

(Mir-ya-na) Soldo details the events of her life as one of those children. But wait, this began as a life of disbelief, not on the part of the visionaries, but on the part of the

local clergy, the bishop and in particular the communist government. Mirjana during this time lived a life of visionary joy and a life of trial by the secular badgering. This

trial of being questioned incessantly by the government which urged and demanded that she deny the apparitions, is countered with each of the “heavenly” messages such as:

“I desire to be a mother to you, a teacher of the truth—so that in the simplicity of an open heart, you may become cognizant of the immeasurable purity and of the light which comes from it and shatters darkness, the light which

brings hope.” — From Our Lady’s Message of May 2, 2014

120 SOL My Heart Will Triumph: Soldo, Mirjana: 2016 “My name is Mirjana. I’ve experienced visions of the Virgin Mary for more than 35 years. I cannot say it more

directly than that.” Mirjana Soldo was only sixteen years old when she and five other children saw a mysterious woman on a

hillside near the village of Medjugorje, ex-Yugoslavia. The woman—who possessed an extraordinary beauty and grace—identified herself as the Virgin Mary. The events that began on that summer afternoon in 1981 dramatically changed Mirjana’s life and brought intense suffering at the hands of the communist authorities. After more than 35 years of apparitions, people still flock to Medjugorje in search of answers to life’s big questions. Stories of miracles

abound, and, according to Mirjana, more are yet to come—the Virgin entrusted her with 10 prophetic secrets concerning the future of the world.

In My Heart Will Triumph, Mirjana tells the story of Medjugorje through her own eyes—the same eyes that, according to her testimony, gaze upon the most revered woman in history.

Our main project for the past quarter was the celebration of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos' birthday, which we celebrated on Sunday, January 8. At breakfast after the 8:30 AM Mass, the Blessed Seelos had a cake and table set up with information about our group. Interest was extreme and many questions were asked of the Seelos group, especially from some of the young children who wanted more information on the relic. The Seelos Mass reliquary was on the altar for the 11:00 AM Mass. Father Dan Good was the celebrant. After mass most of the congregation came up to venerate the reliquary. Pictured at left: Seelos reliquary on altar for Mass with Ethel Smith, Blessed Seelos Prayer Group leader and CTK pastor, Rev. Mathew O'Connor.

FESTA Italiana at Christ the KingThe Italian “FESTA” is the Church’s one & only fundraiser provided by Christ the King

Ladies Sodality with the help of over 100 volunteers. The FESTA is held once a year in Spring during the same weekend of Arts & Crafts on the Eastern Shore. The FESTA began in 1970 by the church after being approached by the Chamber of Commerce to provide a meal for the community to relieve pressure of visitors attending Arts & Crafts in Fairhope. At that time, there were very few restaurants that could feed the influx of people attending Arts &

Crafts. This event became an annual event for our parish to support the needs of the church. To this day, the monies raised still support the needs of the church such as purchasing all the communion hosts, communion wine, candles on the altar, sanctuary needs, vestments, linens, refinishing and maintaining the holy vessels, purchasing new vessels for mass and supports the Burse Club, ACCW (Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women), while helping maintain the needs of Assumption Hall. The monies raised are used and in safe keeping at the discretion of

the Ladies Sodality. What you will find at the FESTA:

Students Celebrate The Birth of ChristThe 5th Grade Children’s Faith Formation students presented the annual production of the Nativity play on December 11 during their regular class time. Students from all K-8 grade levels were in attendance along with many family members and friends. The play was directed by 5A and 5B catechists, Jan Finney and Sybil Viator. Our Contemporary Choir Director, Mary Francis, and pianist, Tracy Krause, provided the musical accompaniment. Sybil also organized and directed an additional performance that was presented for the entire parish just before the start of the 4:00 PM. Children’s Mass on Christmas Eve. Our parish’s Children’s Choir, under the direction of CTKCS music teacher Barbara Hutson, joined them in song. Both performances have become much anticipated events each year in celebration of the joy, peace, and hope that comes into the world through the birth of Christ.

CRS Rice Bowl is Back!Students and families from both our Children’s Faith Formation ministry and our Catholic School will again be participating in the CRS Rice Bowl program during Lent. In its 42nd year, CRS Rice Bowl is Catholic Relief Services’ Lenten program for families and faith communities in the United States who want to put their faith into action. Through CRS Rice Bowl, participants are invited to hear stories about their brothers and sisters in need around the world, and devote their Lenten prayers, fasting and alms to change the lives of those who suffer in poverty. In 2016, more than 14,000 Catholic parishes and schools across the U.S. participated in CRS Rice Bowl. In the first 40 years, more than $250 million has been given through CRS Rice Bowl to support programs that prevent hunger and poverty around the world. Of that, $62.5 million went to programs in the U.S. through local dioceses and $187.5 million went to CRS programs overseas. Each year CRS Rice Bowl funds are directed to between 40 and 45 countries where CRS runs humanitarian response and development programs. Lenten alms go to alleviate hunger and poverty in communities overseas and in the U.S. Seventy-five percent of gifts support CRS’ humanitarian programs around the world. Twenty-five percent of gifts remain in each U.S. diocese where they were given for hunger and poverty alleviation efforts in those communities.

SILVER SAINTS

CTK wrapped up the regular basketball season in February. Our Division 2 Blue and Silver, Division 3, Division 6 Silver, Division 7 Blue and Silver, Senior, and Division 2 Girls took wins on the last

weekend of play. The Division 3 boys team went undefeated on the season.

Congratulations!Spring soccer and golf are underway.

Our new Athletic Complex was dedicated by Archbishop Rodi on Sunday, February 12. We are grateful for the support of our parish

families.

The CTK Silver Saints remain active with fun and informative outings, where we enjoy socializing and getting to know our fellow parishioners. Since our last newsletter, we have attended several plays, two

mystery dinner theater performances, potlucks, and bowling. Our next gathering is a potluck on Sunday, March 12, at 4:00 PM in Assumption Hall. This is a great time to visit with us and see who we are and what we are about. The food is always delicious and the fellowship is

worth the visit! We are planning monthly events and an upcoming group tour of Amelia Island, St. Augustine, and Jacksonville,

Florida, April 24-27, 2017. We will continue to plan trips as long as there is interest. Keep watching for upcoming events in the bulletin and church email notices.

the former Parochial Vicar for Christ the King. Fr. Victor celebrated Mass and visited with our students to speak about our journey in holiness, and to be open to our vocation God has planned for us.

Mrs. Pierce's 3K class has been learning about the "Miracle of the Sun", one of the most dramatic public miracles of modern times, in their religion class. On that day, 70,000 people watched as the sun appeared to make three circles and “dance” in the sky in a zig-zag pattern.

The class created their own sun as part of this lesson.
