HEADLINE NOTICES A Warm Welcome Back!
We would like to warmly welcome all of our students back to school at the start of the Autumn term; especially those joining us for the first time in Years 7 & 12. Further details on the arrangements for on-site COVID testing and staggered student return can be accessed via our website here. We are hopeful that during the coming academic year, we shall be able to move towards a more ‘normal’ model of educational activity, whilst also remaining vigilant and responsive to the ongoing demands of the pandemic. Details of how we shall be operating in this regard, including our continued focus on highly effective health & safety and preventative measures, have been issued separately and can be accessed here. We would like to remind parents that throughout the coming weeks we shall continue to focus on implementing our ‘Recovery Curriculum’. Our aim will be to identify and address gaps in student knowledge, skills and understanding caused by the school lockdowns. Specific provision, including on-site and virtual Saturday and after school classes, will continue to be shared with students and parents on an ongoing basis.

Catch up sessions will be arranged for students who may have missed their original allocated day and for sibling family photographs. Kingsdale Foundation School
is A SAFE SPACE
At Kingsdale Foundation School we actively promote and support an ethos where everyone can feel safe and listened to and, should something go wrong as at times it may, know where to go to for support or guidance and have a trusted person to talk to. Whilst the school has an impressive support network which includes an extensive pastoral team working with each year group, mentors, school counsellors, an art therapist, safeguarding team, links to outside support agencies and a staff cohort regularly trained in issues surrounding the mental well-being and safeguarding of young people, we appreciate that not everyone will always feel comfortable talking to a member of staff or may wish to speak to someone outside of school hours. For those members of our school community who feel they need support or advice or, wish to report an incident or concern we actively encourage you to contact us on one of our confidential emails where a qualified member of staff will be there to provide the support you require:
health&[email protected]
Remember at Kingsdale we
do NOT tolerate:
Bullying
Disrespectful Language
Invasion of Personal Space
or Touching
We demand that all members of our
school community
RESPECT
each other’s personal space and
respect each other’s choices.

On Tuesday 20th May, the Art,
Design & Technology Faculty
celebrated the enormous
achievements of our wonderful
Art, Textiles, Photography,
Graphics and DT students, in
our annual Art & Design
Exhibition. GCSE and A Level
work was showcased, as well as
our Key Stage 3 Art Scholars
and Art G&T work. This
display was testament to the
continued effort and
dedication of our students,
despite the difficulties of
lockdown. It was wonderful to
be able to open the doors to
so many parents, carers, art
alumni, staff, families and
friends. Our Food Science staff
and students made the most
beautiful and delicious
canapés, cocktails and mock-
tails, which were enjoyed by all
of our guests.
Thank you too to our live
musical entertainers and to
everyone who helped to make
the event such a success.
The work in the Art Gallery will
remain on display this term so
there is still an opportunity to
come and have a look!

Year 7 Gifted and Talented and Scholarship Trip to Dulwich
Woods
On Wednesday 7th July 2021, we took a wonderful group of keen Year 7 Gifted & Talented and Arts Scholarship students to Dulwich Woods and the Horniman Gardens.
We gave the students a variety of materials to use in the woods, including charcoal, watercolour and ink, and they created a range of drawings and paintings of the environment. They even managed to create some sculptures in the woods, and enjoyed using the wire to create line drawings. Some students created drawings out of pigments found in the undergrowth.
We spent the afternoon in the Horniman Gardens, admiring the view whilst having our lunch and taking photos assimilating the wire drawings and the view.
The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and the ice creams in the afternoon. What a great trip and it was lovely to be out and about in the local area again!
Year 12 Art Trips
In the last week of the Summer term we took some of our Year 10 and Year 12 Art students to the Museum of London and the Barbican Gallery, as part of their coursework preparation. We had a great time exploring the back streets of the City of London, including the ruins of St Dunstan's in the East church and Tower Bridge. We were given an introduction to the Jean Debuffet show by the head curator, which was a real treat. A thoroughly inspiring and enriching day was had by all.

Reading Recommendations
.
Teacher Recommendation This week, Miss Brown recommends The Outsider by Albert Camus
Camus’s novella explores the alienation of an individual who refuses to conform to social norms. Meursault, his anti-hero, will not lie. When his mother dies, he refuses to show emotions simply to satisfy
the expectations of others. And when he commits a random act of violence on a sun-drenched beach near Algiers, his lack of remorse compounds his guilt in the eyes of society and the law. Miss Brown recommends this book because the novel uses simple language but manages to drop the reader right in the action and provide lots of depth. The novel is obscure and surreal but still manages to allow the reader to establish a connection with the narrator, meaning that the reader empathises with him too.
Recommended to students in Key Stage 4 & above.
Student Recommendation
This week Margaux Glipa in Year 9 recommends Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro
The novel tells the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store watches carefully the behaviour of those who come into browse, and of those who pass on
the street outside. She remains hopeful that one day somebody will choose her.
Margaux recommends this book because it is a very interesting read. The novel discusses new technology, is set in the near future and makes you think about the possibilities of what is to come!
Recommended for Key Stage 3 & 4 readers.
Please send us your reading recommendations so we can share them with the school community.
Recommendations can be sent to [email protected]
In the week of Monday 19th July, some of our Year 7 students were able to attend a workshop with actor Nicolas Tennant, who played the character of Ed in the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time play in the West End, for a number of years. Nicolas talked in great detail about his time spent playing the character, and had lots of hilarious stories about life in a West End show. The students brought with them a variety of insightful and interesting questions about the staging, directing and acting of and in the production, which made for a fantastic afternoon of student-led discussion!
