Your King’s College London Law Society Committee 2011/2012
Dean’s Welcome
First of all I would like to congratulate you on gaining admission to one of the best law schools in
the UK. I am sure that you will find being a student here a challenging but also highly rewarding
experience. The School is well known for its friendly ethos and has a strong concern for the pastoral
care of its students. Members of academic staff in the School are among the leading figures in legal
scholarship both nationally and internationally and their aim is to give you the best and broadest
education in the law that can be achieved during the course of your degree programmed. This
means that we have high expectations of you and of your commitment to your work. At the same
time the facilities of the College and of London itself are open to you and you should seek to make
the most of the many and varied sporting and cultural opportunities that are available.
For most of you coming to the School and to central London marks quite a steep change in your
lives and you should not feel at all inhibited about asking questions. One good source of
information is the King's College London Law Society which promotes both academic and social
events. You can also turn to the Student Law Forum, which represents student interests within the
School. I strongly commend the work of both these groups to you. I very much look forward to
getting to know you over the next few years so the best of wishes and good luck in what will be
among the most exciting times of your lives.

Dear Students,
Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on attaining a place on
the law programme at King’s College London. It gives me immense pride in recognizing
that the university’s law school, remains one of the top five law schools in the country, and
earning a place on its prestigious law programme is a tremendous achievement.
I am extremely passionate about our Society as I believe we cater well to the needs and
wants of our student body. As president I am proud to be an ambassador to our faculty. I am
happy to offer help and advice to current students as well as prospective students. It is also
my duty to liaise with law firms and other members of the profession to organize
sponsorship and ensure that the members of our society are exposed to the profession and
all the relevant information they need to best enable them to forge a career after their law
degree.
Being a part of one of King’s College London’s biggest, and most successful societies,
ensures an unparalleled opportunity to benefit from your time at university. The Law
Society organizes a vast variety of different events throughout the year in our attempt to
cater to as many of you as possible. The Law Society’s social events are the envy of every
other society as we as lawyers are infamous for our superb parties at the most exclusive of
London venues. Debating and mooting offers a fantastic means to improve public speaking
skills and to try something new. Our vocational events ensure that our students have
access to the highest quality information regarding careers from the leading global law
firms. Finally, the sporting opportunities organized against our rival London Law Schools,
provide a platform to meet other like-minded students and to excel, not only at an
academic level.
And so I urge you to join the society and to take the opportunity to maximize your student
experience. We are always discovering new and exciting ways in which we can add to our
full and fantastic programme so please do explore our website and find out more about
what we have to offer.
I look forward to meeting and welcoming you to the society in September.

I hope this brochure find you in good health and spirits. I would like to first congratulate
every single one of you for being accepted into one of the most prestigious Universities in the
world. In September, you will commence your first year of law school, and we are very glad
to have you join us. At the Law Society, we strive to create a collegial and family oriented
environment in which we are working towards a common goal of academic and career
success for all our members. Through a significant amount of events, and networking
opportunities with large city law firms, and seminars with the countries leaders in the legal
profession, we strive to ensure that every law student reaches their full potential not only in
their academic careers, but also as future leaders in the legal profession.
As the Vice President of the Law Society, I organize many of the first year events. For
instance, I compile this booklet, as well as organize our presence at the KCL welcome fair.
The Fresher’s Fair is a fantastic opportunity to meet with you, and to learn more about
KCLLS, and to learn more about other societies at Kings, I encourage everyone to attend.
The Welcome Fair is also provides the opportunity to sign up for societies and meet
classmates before the term begins. Furthermore, as Vice President, I work closely with the
President to ensure that the society runs in a smooth and effective manner, to ensure our
members receive all the benefit the society has to offer.
I hope to meet every one of you at the Welcome fair. Feel free to email me, anytime or visit
the law society website at kcllawsociety.org.uk.
Regards,
Nima Mahdavi

Vocational Officer
Ruba Ameen
Firstly, congratulations on successfully obtaining a place to study Law at King’s College
London. The KCL Law Society is here to assist you on your journey, from preparing the most
high-profile social events to providing you with information on the range of professional
opportunities open to you once you have completed your Law degree.
As Vocational Officer, my role is to ensure that you are provided with a range of vocational
events where you have the opportunity to liaise and network with employees of world
renowned Law firms as well as those coming from other professional backgrounds into which a
Law degree can help you gain access. It is my job to make sure that you are aware of all of the
formal presentations, interactive workshops and more informal networking sessions held both
on-campus at KCL and off-campus at firm’s offices elsewhere in central London, and to assist
in organising these events to tailor to your needs as new students of Law.
Attending such events is always helpful and enjoyable, and provides you with the chance to
learn of the skills required to work successfully within the legal sector, and also with the
opportunity to meet and get to know some of the most reputable legal professionals in the
country. With so much of the professional world today being about who you know as much as
about what you know, learning to liaise with such individuals at such events is key to ensuring
a high-flying career in both the legal sector and elsewhere.
I wish you the best of luck in your endeavours, and am sure you will enjoy your first year as a
Law student of King’s College London.

Social Secretary
Elina Mantrali

Hey guys, my name is Elina Mantrali and I am the Social Secretary for
2011/2012. My job is to organize the Law Society’s various events, from the
Fresher’s Party to the glamorous Annual Ball in some of London’s more exclusive
clubs and venues. For me, the parties organized by the Law Society have been
some of my most fun nights out in London, and I hope that I will equally provide
the same for you. The parties are a great way to meet people from our course, but
they are also open for you to bring any friends you like.
As Social Secretary, my responsibility is to make sure that you have a great time
while you are here, getting the most out of London not just academically, but also
socially. Demanding as a Law course can be, the events we put on are a great
opportunity to let go and have some fun in one of the world’s greatest cities.
Furthermore, the Law Society’s events are sponsored by several top range law
firms and are also attended by representatives of those law firms. As such, apart
from getting to meet fellow lawyers, these events are also an opportunity for the
necessary networking that is part of a future lawyer’s life.
Landing in London can be quite daunting in the beginning – it is a massive city,
and with everything being an option, choosing becomes an issue. The idea behind
these events is to give you some bearings in discovering London as well as the
chance to meet people who are also living and studying here. It goes without
saying that if you have any questions, you should not hesitate to contact me.
See you all in September!

First off, I would like to warmly extend my many congratulations on being accepted into the
prominent institution which is King’s College London.
The KCL Law Society receives much financial backing from corporations. Thus, sponsorship
from law firms is a precious resource. Obtaining this is the President’s job, and seeing this spent
in an efficient and responsible way is the Treasurer’s. As Treasurer, it is my job to ensure,
through careful financial planning, that the sponsorship received is spent appropriately and
its use is optimized throughout the year. I also aim to ensure that the membership money from
you is put to its full use, so that you can benefit from your investment to its full potential – since
joining the Law Society is your investment in your future career. I’m involved in funding the
many top-quality events within the society, mainly trying to ensure that there is no wasted
expenditure and that we can maintain the running of the society on sufficient resources.
Balancing work and play is seen by many as a difficult task. I happen to disagree with this
view – I am determined that attendance at Law Society social events should be a chance to let
off steam as well as an opportunity to network. My underlying rationale for this would be the
maxim, “Work hard, play hard.” Remember, everyone on the KCLLS Committee was in your
position once; we were all talented, bright but invariably inexperienced first-year law
students.
The Committee for 2011-12 hopes to cement the KCL Law Society’s reputation as an
invaluable source of information and advice for students, as well as inspire and stimulate the
minds of members to further themselves academically and socially.
A British-born Chinese and a Londoner through-and-through, I look forward to seeing you
all in the coming year, both on-campus and at future Law Society events! Studying in London
is not only a great opportunity for your academic and future job prospects, but a perfect
opportunity to become acquainted with the vibrant and exciting capital which is the city. My
top tip is not to stress in the law course; there is nothing to fear except not enjoying your
university experience.

It is a pleasure to welcome you all to not only one the best universities in the country but also
one of the best places to study law. The ability to offer persuasive arguments and convince
another of the merits of one’s opinion is an essential skill in any career path and even more so in
the legal field. Aside from the personal benefit in developing these skills, it is considered an
essential pre-requisite by law firms and chambers. As Mistress of Debates and Moots, it is my
responsibility to organize and promote opportunities for our members to showcase and develop
their skills in these areas.
We provide regular opportunities for students to compete not only against fellow King's law
students but also law students from other universities and the Inns of Court. This year we are
hoping to create more opportunity for participation especially for novice mooters. We are
committed to finding and nurturing new talent providing them with the skills and experience
that would ensure success.
In order to ensure that our members are able to hone their skills and better reach their potential
we will be organizing training events and mooting workshops throughout the academic year.
We will also be working with other societies to provide formal as well as informal debates on
topical issues to encourage participation if you find mooting to daunting. The Law Society will
keep you informed of such events and opportunities throughout the year, however if you are
interested in debating/mooting or have any questions, then please feel free to send me an e-
mail.

Firstly, well done on being accepted to one of the world’s finest universities! There is truly no
better place to pursue Law than in London, and the Law Society will be your way in to the City
firms, Chambers, Inns of Court and all other future employers often based within walking
distance of your very lecture theatre. Immerse yourself in the Law Society and, well, the sky is
the limit for your future prospects. And the canapés aren’t half bad either (which always helps).
Myself, I’m a Londoner of 19 years and a 2nd year Law student. I got fully involved with KCLLS
last year, playing rugby (a hard earned victory over the Law Society of England and Wales
springs to mind), football, and a spot of mooting too. This year as a committee member I want to
make sure you have just as much fun with all the opportunities we offer. You can get in touch
with Tom for sports, Zeze for mooting and debating, and ask Elina about the exciting socials we
have planned for you.
My job as Communications Officer includes updating and administrating the website,
increasing our presence on social networking sites, and other things such as digitalising the core
processes of the Law Society and creating this booklet. I’m also responsible for publicising
“brand KCLLS” and our PR.
The website (www.kcllawsociety.org.uk) is a hub of information regarding law firms, events
throughout the year, photos, and even has an extensive city guide. So do check out the website
and don’t be afraid to drop me an email if you’re confused about anything or just want a bit of
advice, I remember how daunting things can seem at the beginning of the year!
Finally, if you want to become a member of the Law Society (you should!) then you can either
send the slip at the back of this booklet or, preferably, join through the “Join The Society” link
on the website.
In the meantime you can find us on Facebook by searching KCL Law Society and follow us on
Twitter @kcllawsociety
(P.S I designed this booklet and front cover so any feedback would be greatly appreciated!)

Tom Millington
11
Hello, my name is Tom Millington and I will be your Sports Officer for 2011/12. Firstly I
would like to congratulate you upon gaining acceptance to one of the world’s most
prestigious institutes of education. Your degree will give you a brilliant platform to enter
careers in the upper echelon Law Firms and Barrister Inns. Unfortunately, long-gone are the
days where academic prowess alone was sufficient to succeed in the competitive scramble to
obtain vacation schemes and training contracts. Such companies look for the ability to be a
proactive team member, to have a high affinity for social events and to be able to interact
comfortably and confidently with potential clients. These are all transferable skills that can
be gained from sporting activities.
In this upcoming year I will be seek to utilize the medium of sport to help develop a truly
collegiate atmosphere within the law student body, whilst providing great opportunities to
network with potential future employers. The sporting events will mainly revolve around the
central sports of rugby, football and netball, although we are already looking into
expanding the range of sports in order to cater for different interests. Ultimately the Law
Society sporting calendar will climax in the varsity matches against the University College
London Law Society which serves not only to provide a high quality competitive event but
also a great spectacle for non-competing members. Thus I urge you to take advantage of the
wonderful opportunities that the King’s College Law Society will offer you.
If you have any questions with regard to sport within the King’s College Law Society or
simply with starting law at King’s, please do not hesitate to contact me via the following
email: [email protected]
I look forward to seeing you soon!

As Secretary this year it will be my job to organize membership for new members of the King’s
College Law Society. As well as this I will be answering any queries or questions you may have
and keeping you update with the many vocational and social events planned throughout the
year.
Once you have settled in to your studies, I will also be responsible for organizing the selection
process for the First Year Representative who will communicate your views, opinions and needs
to the Committee. Non- lawyers are also strongly encouraged to speak to the Representative or
directly to us if they have any questions particularly related to legal careers.. Finally towards
the end of the year Hustings will take place where the prospective new Committee members
will apply for positions. Again I will organize this process and be a point of contact throughout
the period.
I wish you all the best this year and remind you again to please contact me directly with any
questions you have whether a law student or a non-law student.
Ashton
Secretary
First Year Law Representative
As First Year Law Representative, you will become an invaluable member of the Law Society
committee. It will give you the opportunity to become a part of the team and contribute to
group decisions that will inevitably affect your peers. The role will require you to become an
ambassador for the first year Law students. This will therefore entail you gauging the views and
opinions of first year Law students and reporting these back to the committee to aid with our
decision making, ensuring our decisions are beneficial to students in the first year. It will also be
necessary for you to help any of the other officers in the committee should they encounter
difficulties of any kind, and this will sometimes entail you holding your own events for Law
students. Further, you will be required to address first year Law students in lectures, advertising
events and providing information. You will become an important member of the committee
and very well known amongst your year group. An email will be sent out early during the first
term asking for applicants and then all applicants will be required to attend an interview and
team-based task.
Administration Officer
Charmaine De Castro
My role as Administration Officer is a fairly new role in the Law Society, having been
introduced only last year. As admin officer, I provide support to the work of the other officers
to ensure that we are able to provide you with the best events, activities and opportunities that
would guarantee you a fantastic university experience and equip you for your future careers.
As you may know by now, the Society offers a variety of vocational, social and sporting events.
As we seek to build you up as a well-rounded law student and a future professional, another
event to look forward to this year is RAGGING (Raising and Giving) which I will be
spearheading. It is a fun and exciting event to raise money and give to our chosen charities.
This is also a great opportunity to prove that we in the field of law are not soulless, selfish
creatures but in fact, we are at par, if not even more willing than the medics (who have a very
strong RAGGING contribution) to take part in something that would benefit others. ;) This
event will be further explained in the coming year, but if anyone is particularly interested in
being involved in this charity work, please feel free to contact me.
I am also in charge of the Law Society hoodies. To get a first look, please visit the Law Society
website, and you can place your order through the site as well (perfect for the autumn/winter
season too!)! The hoodie are a great way of letting the world know that not only are you part of
one of the UK’s premier law schools, but also one of the country’s best societies too! (For all you
know, you might just bag a work experience or make great contacts with solicitors and
barristers you bump into on any London transport because of your KCL Law Society hoodie!)
On behalf of the KCL Law Society, welcome! As we all know, learning does not only happen in
the four walls of the lecture hall (though I still encourage you to do your work from day 1. ;) ).
Take advantage of every workshop; attend every party and RAG to your heart’s content.
Make the most of your year, as you’ll only go through it once! I wish you all the best and please
feel free to contact me on [email protected] for any queries.

Social Events
Fresher’s Drinks (21st September, Knights Templar) -
The drinks are held at the Knights Templar, which is the pub exactly opposite the Maughan Library a few minutes walk away
from the Strand Campus. This is the first event put on by the Law Society, and is a great opportunity to get to meet the
Committee and find out what the Law Society is all about. Being on the evening of induction, this is the perfect chance to meet
fellow lawyers, and – being a Wednesday – start the night with free drinks sponsored by BPP before we move the night down
to the typical King’s hangout: Walkabout!
Welcome Fair (22 – 23 September, Barbican Exhibition Hall 2) -
The King’s College London Students’ Union (KCLSU) Annual Welcome Fair collects all the College’s societies under a single
roof in a huge event that lasts two days. It is a massive event, starting in the morning and lasting until late, so you should make
a day of it and come with friends. This is an opportunity to sign up to the Law Society, and also to buy tickets for our Freshers’
Party! It would be ideal to arrive at the Law Society’s stand early, so as not to miss the chance to pick up your very own Herbert
Smith goody bag. You can make joining faster by filling in the attached membership form from before and bringing it to the
Fair. Remember that quite a few societies charge for membership, so make sure to bring enough money to cover you for the
day.
Fresher’s Party (October 3rd, funkybuddha) -
The Freshers’ Party is a great opportunity to experience the luxurious aspect of the London nightlife. Held at funkybuddha in
exclusive Mayfair, this is definitely a night not to be missed, and a chance to party away to great music and free drinks. This
event is heavily sponsored by the magic circle law firm Allen & Overy, and so this is also an opportunity to meet
representatives of the firm who also attend the event. This is a party put on with the idea for you to meet even more fellow law
students, but all our events are open to anyone, so feel free to bring your friends along!
Pub Crawl (October 19th) -
This is just another event to get the law students together for a chance to mingle even more, at this stage where you are a little
less freshers than before. It is also a chance to begin preparing for that long bus ride to Paris that follows just a few weeks later!
Details of the night will be sent out later, but one thing is certain – we will end up at Walkabout, yet again.
Christmas Party (December 5th, Whisky Mist) -
The Law Society hosts a Christmas Party – largely sponsored by Field Fisher Waterhouse LLP so expect free drinks – to
celebrate the end of the first term at King’s. It is essentially an excuse to get everyone together before the holidays, and this
year it is held at the amazing Whisky Mist in Mayfair! You could go all out for the evening and visit the Windows bar on the
28th floor of the Hilton for a drink before moving to the ground floor to begin the party. Again, there will be more details sent out nearer to the event, but as a heads up the theme is James Bond – so make sure you rock up in appropriate attire and order
martinis.
The Annual Linklater’s Law Ball (March 3rd, Old Royal Naval College) -
The year concludes with the Annual Ball – an event where we spare no expense. This year it will be held at the Old Royal
Naval College – not just where Henry VIII and Elizabeth I were born, but also one of the main filming sites for the most
recent Pirates of the Carribean film! The evening begins with a champagne reception, and is followed by a dinner and a
dance in the same venue. Details and surprises of the evening will be available nearer to the event, but rest assured that
this is one of those nights where London’s glamorous finer side is on show.
Elina Mantrali, Social Secretary
New this year, an exciting opportunity exclusive for Law Society members! With an emphasis on freshers, this year the King’s College London Law Society are heading to Paris. It’s purely social, and will be a great way to get to know your fellow Law students and to make new friends.
Enjoy four days and two nights in the beautiful city of Paris, with the opportunity to experience the nightlife of a different city, sample the Parisian cuisine, or simply to relax away from the pressures of University life.
It’s going to be absolutely massive and spaces are limited, so book now to ensure you don’t miss out! You can see more information about the outing, and also make your booking, by going to www.outgoing.co.uk , and entering the
group code KINGSLAW If you have any questions, you can email me at [email protected], or Priscilla at [email protected] Looking forward to seeing you there!
