Welcome to Kings and Queens, we are so happy to see you here.

Today, we delve in to the triumphant world of royalty, with processions, marches, waltzes and who knows what King Guy will bring to us! I always adore playing Handel’s fabulous Entrance of the Queen of Sheba and just get carried away with the interplay between the majesty of our oboes and the joyous accompaniment of the string semiquavers. I have to hold myself to my seat though, as I always feel like standing up in reverence to watch the arrival ceremony!

Another favourite - Mother Goose Suite by Ravel. Just the third movement today but if you’re ever looking to engage our youngsters AND our young at heart in classical music, then check out the animated piano duo versions online.

We also have a collaboration of two great musicians, King Wilfred Lehmann, who composed the trombone concerto you will hear today, and Prince Jason Redman, who will perform it. I was lucky enough to begin my Queensland Symphony Orchestra days with Wilf as a violinist in the orchestra too - a ‘supreme’ musician. Coupled with my friend Jason’s exquisite trombone playing, we’re in for a royal treat.

Great to have renowned conductor Fabian Russell with us, oh sorry ‘King Fabian’, and an orchestral mantra, ‘We only work on Sundays if we can have Guy with us!’ What will his costume be?

WHO SITS WHERE

The following terms appear in bold the first time they appear in the listening guide.

Sinfonia an orchestral piece used as an introduction to a work, common in the 18th century.

Oratorio a vocal work based on a sacred or secular text, usually religious in nature.

Overture a piece of music usually performed at the beginning of an opera or play.

Symphony a large or extended musical composition, most commonly written for Western orchestra and containing around three or more movements.

Movement a self-contained section of a work.

Waltz an elegant dance which has groups of three beats, with the first beat receiving the most emphasis.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS

Orchestras sit in sections based on types of instruments. There are four main sections in the Western classical orchestra: strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion, and sometimes a keyboard section.

LISTENING GUIDE

Georg Frideric Handel (1685-1759)Entrance of the Queen of Sheba, from Solomon, HWV 67Music and a sense of royalty often go hand in hand. In Solomon, Handel represents the Queen of Sheba’s arrival at Solomon’s court with this vivid orchestral sinfonia. Handel’s oratorio apotheosised his friend King George, symbol to Handel of just, constitutional government in his adopted homeland. This piece was also featured in a pre-filmed sequence at the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 London Olympic Games when James Bond (Daniel Craig) met Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace.

Guiseppe Verdi (1813-1901)Nabucco OvertureYoung Giuseppe Verdi almost gave up composing after the failure of his comedy Un giorno di regno (King for a Day) in 1840, but the director of La Scala persuaded him to read Temistocle Solera’s libretto for Nabucco and Verdi fell in love with the words ‘Va, pensiero’ (Go thoughts on golden wings) and started composing again. Nabucco begins with what’s known as a ‘pot-pourri’ overture, previewing themes from the opera. Besides ‘Va, pensiero’ you’ll hear the furtive ‘curse theme’. Incidentally, Nabucco isn’t just a king in this opera. At one point, he proclaims himself god!

Joseph Maurice Ravel (1875-1937)Suite from Mother Goose: Laideronnette, Empress of the PagodasRavel originally wrote Mother Goose as a two-piano piece which was premiered by two children in 1910. The work was inspired by fairytales and therefore conformed to miniature dimensions. ‘Mother Goose’ refers to Perrault’s Contes de ma Mère l’Oye, published in 1697, but the third movement refers to ‘Laideronnette, Empress of the Pagodas’, from a story collection by the Comtesse d’Aulnoy. It concerns a former princess who has been made ugly by a wicked witch. With a Green Serpent (once a handsome prince), she has sailed to the land of the Pagodas (tiny people-like articulated figurines, with bodies made of jewels and porcelain). Here the two travellers are restored to their former appearance and married. The scene described is the Empress’s bath, accompanied by Pagodas and Pagodines singing and playing on Oriental-sounding instruments.

Wilfred Lehmann (born 1929)Concerto for Trombone I. Prelude III. FinaleJason Redman, our soloist and Section Principal Trombone, had the following to say about this work: Wilfred Lehmann wrote this Concerto for Trombone in 2004/5 after phoning with an idea to write a piece for me. Wilfred had returned to Queensland Symphony Orchestra as Associate Concertmaster during my early years with the Orchestra, during which time he also conducted many concerts and recordings. The Concerto had its premiere performance in March 2005 at a Studio Series Concert in our old Ferry Road Studios in West End. I was the soloist and Wilfred Lehmann conducted the entire programme. I am particularly excited to be able to perform the two outer movements of this Australian Trombone Concerto again this evening.

Lehmann uses the full orchestra in a very dramatic style, with primal, tribal rhythms and surging climaxes, and it demonstrates his deep understanding of orchestral sounds and textures. The majestic opening theme of the Prelude, with its striking rhythmic, leaping intervals, is one that reappears throughout the work, for example later returning in the muted solo trombone voice. Musical dialogues between the opening theme and melancholy melodic lines bring us to a striking finish to the movement. The pulsing and energetic Finale develops a lot of the same thematic material from the Prelude, beginning with an inverted variation on the Prelude's opening theme, repeated in the orchestra. After a slow, lamenting melody on solo trombone, the full forces of the orchestra launch into a final furious ascent, with the trombone leaping, running and sliding to the climactic last chord.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)Symphony No.7 in A, Op.92 II. AllegrettoThe first performance of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony took place in 1813 at a benefit for Field Marshall Prince von Wrede’s soldiers wounded at the Battle of Hanau. The patriotic significance of the occasion was augmented by the premiere of Beethoven’s Wellington’s Victory, celebrating Joseph Bonaparte’s defeat at the Battle of Vitoria. Even on that first occasion, the Seventh’s dignified second movement attracted most audience attention. It has since been used in several films including The King’s Speech, where George VI (Colin Firth) overcomes a speech impediment to address the British people at the outset of war.

Richard Wagner (1813-1883)Lohengrin, Act 2: Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral (Feierlicher Zug zum Münster)Richard Wagner’s subject matter usually concerned gods and goddesses from German mythology. His opera Lohengrin comes from an episode in Eschenbach’s medieval poem, Parzival. Lohengrin, a knight of the Grail, answers a call from King Henry of Brabant to defend Elsa who has remained silent when accused of murdering her brother, a duke. Lohengrin agrees to defend her on condition she never ask his name. But after the wedding, Elsa becomes curious. Lohengrin reveals that he is the son of King Parsifal, but must now return to Montsalvat since she has broken her vow. Liszt premiered Lohengrin in Weimar in 1850 but Wagner couldn’t attend. He was in exile for having taken part in republican uprisings.

Johann Strauss Jr. (1825-1899)Emperor Waltzes (Kaiser-Walzer), Op.437Strauss’s music often had interesting origins. In its first performance The Blue Danube was sung to lyrics that celebrated Vienna’s new street lighting. The Emperor Waltz was written to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Franz Josef’s accession to the Austrian throne. Typical of a Strauss waltz, it exceeds its form. It is actually a cavalcade of melodies beginning with an imperious-sounding march that segues beautifully into triple-time dances that you can swirl away to.

Edward Elgar (1857-1934)Imperial March, Op.32Elgar was struggling to earn a living when his publisher Novello suggested he write a march for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. He polished off the work and hoped it would please but Novello’s editor asked for some longer phrases, ‘say, sometimes of eight bars’. Elgar refashioned the work and returned it in early 1897, swallowing his pride because failure meant returning to teaching. He contemplated quoting excerpts in the score from a poem by Sir Edward Arnold praising Victoria’s ‘glorious years three-score!’. He was a proud subject and gave the world some very regal music.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES

Fabian RussellConductorFabian Russell is at the forefront of the Australian classical music industry as an award-winning conductor, artistic director, orchestral musician, soloist, and educator.

He is the Founder, Artistic Director, and Conductor of The Orchestra Project; a Melbourne-based training orchestra comprised of Australia’s finest young musicians.

Fabian has enjoyed a long relationship with the internationally-acclaimed Australian Youth Orchestra as Associate Conductor and in 2013 was Conductor-in-Residence at the Australian Youth Orchestra National Music Camp in Adelaide.

He has conducted most of Australia’s professional orchestras and has served as Assistant Conductor at the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. He has also conducted the Victorian Opera in an acclaimed season of John Adams’ Nixon in China. In 2008, Fabian was invited to be Principal Guest Conductor of the Melbourne Youth Orchestra and was subsequently appointed Principal Conductor and Artistic Director.

Fabian has established an international reputation as a leading brass musician, holding positions as a professional tuba player with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and Orchestra Victoria, and has performed as a soloist with numerous Australian orchestras.

Jason RedmanTromboneJason Redman has been the Principal Trombonist of Queensland Symphony Orchestra in Australia since 1990, and has been teaching trombone to Undergraduate and Post Graduate students at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University since 1998.

At 17, he was chosen to be Principal Trombone with the Australian Youth Orchestra for their ‘Grand Bicentennial Tour’ of Europe. He held this position, and also Principal Trombone with the Queensland Youth Orchestra until August 1990 when, at the age of 19, he was appointed Principal Trombonist of Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

In 1996, he was awarded a Churchill Fellowship, enabling a three-month study tour of the USA, working with leading orchestral trombone players and teachers in San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia and New York.

Guy NobleConductorGuy Noble has had a long association with Queensland Symphony Orchestra, having first worked with the Orchestra in 1994. He has been host of the Music on Sundays series since 2005 and conducted the Orchestra in many other concerts in QPAC, Cairns, Townsville and the Gold Coast. When he isn’t with Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Guy also performs with the other major orchestras around the country. He also has worked with the Malaysian Philharmonic, the Hong Kong Philharmonic (in Music of John Williams) and the Auckland Philharmonic in their Unwrap the Classics series, and the Bergen Philharmonic as part of the Bergen Festival. He is also host and conductor of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s Classics Unwrapped series at the Adelaide Town Hall.

As a soloist Jason has performed trombone concertos by Mozart, Rouse, Creston, Bloch, Lehmann (2005 premiere) and Lovelock with Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

He has been guest Principal Trombone with the Adelaide, Melbourne and West Australian Symphony Orchestras.

His former students hold positions in AOBO, WASO, TSO and the Münchner Rundfunkorchester.

Jason is a Bach Brass Trombone Artist and regularly gives workshops and masterclasses around Queensland as part of Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s Education and Community Engagement program.

Guy is the host and accompanist each year for Great Opera Hits (Opera Australia) in the Joan Sutherland Theatre of the Sydney Opera House. His Opera! The Opera will be performed as part of the inaugural season of Coast Opera Australia in December.

Guy has worked with a wide variety of international performers with orchestras across Australia, including Harry Connick Jnr, Ben Folds, The Beach Boys, The Pointer Sisters, Dianne Reeves, Glenn Frey, Randy Newman, Clive James, Conchita, The Two Cellos, Alfie Boe, and Olivia Newton-John.

He is also the host of Concert Hall on Qantas Radio.
