2 Bargain of the Month Record of the Month – Your Featured Selection 3

Like Prince Hal in Shakespeare’s Henry IV plays, Alfred Deller leaves the more refined environment of the court and its attendant musical institutions for the streets and taverns of London. This 2 CD set combines the two volumes of tavern songs plus the album The Cries of London that he and the Deller Consort recorded for Vanguard. This is the first time these three marvellous LPs have been issued on CD in the U.S., and what a welcome return to the catalog they are! A wonderful, life-enhancing collection of baroque revelry.

“The performances are for the most part vivid and humorous, with none of the stuffiness associated with ‘old music’. A purist might find some of the accents more redolent of Mummerset than of London (even seventeenth-century London), but that’s all part of the fun.” (Gramophone – The Cries of London)

“I don’t think anyone could rightly come away from the music …without an appreciation of the vast talents and accomplishments of that pioneer of early music, Alfred Deller…” (Fanfare)

Tracks: Cobb: These are The Cries of London Town; Ravenscroft: New Oysters; A Bellman’s Song; The Painter’s Song; Brooms of Old Shoes; Dering: The Cries of London; Savage: Muffins Ho!; Dering: Country Cries; Anon: A Quart a Penny; I Can Mend Your Tubs and Pails; Amo, Amas, I Love a Lass; I Am Athirst; Troll the Bowl; We be Soldiers Three; He That Will An Alehouse Keep; Inigo Jones; Summer is Icumen in; Nelham: Have You Any Work for the Tinker?; Weelkes: The Cries of London; Atterbury: One a Penny, Two a Penny; Purcell: Man is for the Woman Made; Sir Walter; To Thee and to the Maid; Once, Twice, Thrice; When the Cock Begins to Crow; An Epitaph; The Ape; The Lion, the Fox and the Ass; True Englishmen; Purcell or Blow: Chiding Catch; Earl of Mornington: ‘Twas You Sir; Savile: Had She Not Care Enough; Turner: Young Anthony; Cornyshe: Ah Robin; Hoyda, Jolly Rutterkin; Lawes: Bess Black; Sing, fair Clorinda; The Captive Lover (arr. With Henry Purcell (1659 - 1695) English music achieved a new height of sophistication and emotional intensity. This is most apparent in his one and only opera, Dido and Aeneas, and in his Odes and Welcome Songs, the greatest of which are Ode for St. Cecilia’s Day and Come ye Sons of Art.

Dido and Aeneas (1689) is a consummate fusion of drama and music made doubly astonishing by the fact that Purcell, as in much of his vocal settings, had to work with an uninspiring text. Few Baroque operas contain such a succession of beautiful arias and choruses. Famous moments include ‘Shake the cloud from off your brow’, ‘Oft she visits’ and the greatest of all, the immortal Dido’s Lament, one of the greatest moments in all of opera.

Ode for St. Cecilia’s Day (1692) sees Purcell in celebratory mood as he pays tribute to the Patron Saint of Music, St. Cecilia. Purcell is not the only composer to offer his thanks to Cecilia, but his Ode, in particular, is a triumph of vocal and instrumental scoring, with daring use of chromatic harmonies that was the composer’s trademark.

Being a composer for the royal court Purcell had to produce an endless line of obsequious odes and songs but it is an achievement that he turned each one into a genuine pearl that rises above the context in which they were set. It helped that Purcell had a genuine affection for Queen Mary II for whom he wrote Come ye Sons of Art (1694). Again Purcell displays here his ability for creating a masterpiece out of a relatively humdrum text. It would be his crowning achievement in the genre, Mary would die in December of that year; Purcell the following November.

Alfred Deller and his Deller Consort did much to revive interest in the music of Henry Purcell in the 20th century and we are pleased to offer you here a unique chance of purchasing three classic recordings of music by Henry Purcell drawn from Alfred Deller’s classic Vanguard catalog in one superb set.

These recordings date from the 1950s and 1960s but have hardly dated at all. The line-up of singers features the very best performers from that era, including Honor Sheppard, Helen Watts and Robert Tear in Dido, and of course Alfred Deller. The composer Sir Michael Tippett is the conductor of Ode to Saint Cecilia.

This offer is exclusive to Musical Heritage Society and should be acquired for music enthusiasts who want to witness the results when a great composer and equally legendary performers meet.

“An unexpected and highly valuable recording from the earliest days of stereo … with Sir Michael Tippett, no less, directing an inspirational version … of Purcell’s Hail, bright Cecilia. The splendid soloist in the part which Purcell sang at the first performance is Alfred Deller. The Ambrosian Singers and Kalmar County Chamber Orchestra give excellent support.” (Gramophone)

J.S. Bach: Cantatas – Ich habe genug BWV82 & Gott soll allein mein Herze haben BWV169Scholl; Kammerorchester BaselAndreas Scholl has done nothing but release very fine recordings since he first emerged in the 1990s. One of the leading countertenors of his generation, Scholl has picked his repertoire with care to showcase the best qualities of his beautiful voice. Here he has personally chosen to record two of J.S. Bach’s cantatas. Accompanying him is the highly regarded Swiss group, the Kammerorchester Basel. It represents a return to a composer who has always brought out the best in Scholl’s singing.

At the moment Andreas Scholl is on tour in the U.S. and due to appear at the Metropolitan Opera alongside Renée Fleming and directed by Harry Bicket, in Handel’s Rodelinda which sounds like a guaranteed critical and popular success.

Mozart: Horn Concertos Nos. 1 - 4Allegrini; Orchestra Mozart; AbbadoMozart’s Horn Concertos are always a joy to listen to and this release from virtuoso Claudio Allegrini, the Orchestra Mozart and Claudio Abbado adds another excellent recording to the many fine ones that have gone before. The performances lean more towards period perfor-mance, with feather-light textures, although orchestra and soloist don’t use period instruments. This is the first release in a series by the Orchestra Mozart and Abbado who aim to record all of Mozart’s concertos for wind. This CD represents an auspicious start to proceedings.

“Alessio Allegrini...is certainly a suave instrumentalist, while once again Abbado conducts with a wonderfully light touch. The orchestra and Allegrini all play modern instruments, but there’s a period sensibility about the way the textures are balanced and the phrasing shaped...” (The Guardian - London)

The Liszt RecordingsZimerman; Boston Symphony Orchestra; OzawaIn this bicentennial year of Liszt’s birth it is good to be reminded of these recordings by Krystian Zimerman which have maintained their place at the forefront of Liszt interpretation on record for over twenty years. Deutsche Grammophon has now reissued them in a complete 2 CD set.“…as one listens, one feels this music could not be played in any other way – surely the mark of a great performance! (Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 2; Totentanz)” (The Penguin Guide)

“Perfect piano playing…(the Concertos)”(Süddeutsche Zeitung)

Works: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 2; Totentanz; Piano Sonata in B minor; Nuages gris; La notte; La Lugubre Gondola; Funérailles

Mozart’s GardenErdmann; La Cetra; MarconMojca Erdmann is a German lyric soprano who is set for great things. On this recording she sings a selection of well known Mozart arias alongside those of his contemporaries, J.C. Bach, Holzbauer and Paisiello. While the Mozart items are delights in themselves, it is the work of the other composers which provides the most fascinating aspect of this rewarding disc.

“Erdmann’s spirited, impeccably tuned soprano is a delight to hear, and this unhackneyed recital is richly enjoyable.” (Gramophone)

“Erdmann is certainly an interpreter of major gifts.” (BBC Music Magazine)

“A ravishing recital. Erdmann really shines on her solo debut…” (Limelight)

Radu Lupu – The Complete Decca Concerto RecordingsLupu; Various ArtistsThis marvellous 6 CD set, including an “outstanding cycle” (Gramophone) of the Beethoven Piano Concertos with Zubin Mehta, gathers together all of the concerto recordings made by the great Radu Lupu for Decca over the last 40 years. A fine tribute to a truly great artist.

“The Lupu-Previn performance suits the music admirably...Lupu’s clean boldness of approach in the outer movements is appealingly fresh…(Grieg & Schumann)”(Gramophone)

Works include: Beethoven: Piano Quintet; Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 12 & 21; Piano Quintet K452; Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 1; Grieg: Piano Concerto; Schumann: Piano Concerto

Vivaldi: MasterworksArtists include: Accardo; Manze; Coin;

Music; I Musici; New London Consort; Australian Brandenburg

Orchestra; Preston; Hogwood; Pickett

Vivaldi was amongst the most prolific composers of the Baroque era. He composed hundreds of concertos for violin, cello and winds as well as countless chamber works, not forgetting the choral and operatic music.

Happily the Vivaldi Masterworks box set does all the hard work for you by selecting all the most important compositions by the Red Priest in performances of the highest quality from the Decca, Philips and L’Oiseau Lyre back-catalogs.

So what we have are period performances by some of the finest artists working in the genre over the last thirty years – violinist Andrew Manze, sopranos Catherine Bott and Emma Kirkby, countertenor Andreas Scholl and conductor Christopher Hogwood to name just a few. On modern instruments Salvatore Accardo, Heinz Holliger and I Musici also contribute to the proceedings.

Here you will find all the major concerto collections, L’estro armonico, La stravaganza, Il cimento dell’armonia e dell’inventione and La Cetra, the key sonatas and the most glorious Venetian choral music since the time of Monteverdi.

If that wasn’t enough the set comes with a detailed booklet, which includes full track listings, sung texts and an essay by esteemed Vivaldi expert Michael Talbot. So even if you already have some Vivaldi in your collection, the Masterworks offers you the chance of acquiring the best in period and modern instrument performance at a very special price.

Cuckoo’).” (Fanfare)

“It is unlikely that Salvatore Accardo’s performances...could be surpassed in terms of sympathetic fluency, musicanship and sheer beauty of tone (Violin Sonatas Op. 1 & 2).”(The Penguin Guide)
