For those of you new to KOTR June is the month of our founding back in 2015. Three years of a different type of old car club. We went through a few changes over that time. We first had monthly meetings to get ourselves organized with by-laws and such. We had some big parties back then but we lost our venue. Now we find that we don’t need a venue, as such, we meet on the road. After all we are King Of The Road, KOTR. Our regular monthly gathering is an “Ice Cream Run.” Every now and then we throw in a dinner too and call it a “Double Header.” Mix with that some very special events such as our annual “Chowdah Fest” and garage tours and museum trips and you find that we have a lot of fun without the

traditional monthly meetings. Let’s face it, no one really likes all the “reports” and minutes stuff. This is a car club, an antique car club to be specific and the real fun is the trip to a food source. We try to mix up the style of “joints” we visit, from simple to elegant. We try to keep the club fresh and more spontaneous. We do need to have input from the membership as to what you would like in the future. Simple outings with good friends and old cars is not a bad thing. By getting out and about, help-ing the special needs of some folks, that is one of our missions. It’s fun, we get to drive our cars, meet lots of people and talk about the good ol’ days . It’s a win-win for everyone. This

is the vision we had when we formed three years ago. Be of service to our self, be of service to others and of course have a good time doing it. We have another season ahead of us as we enjoy the Summer “slack season” here in central Florida. We are well into setting plans for the AACA National Winter Meet in February 2019 in near by Ocala. Here is an opportunity for you to get involved with a national event either showing your car or helping with the many chores required to stage such an activity. Better still do both, show your car and pitch in helping out. We will be staging the finest Ice Cream Social in all of AACA. Come on, let’s have some fun together, all of us. Until next time, keep on driving.

We were right in our own back yard for the May 11th, KOTR Ice Cream Run. Sonic’s Drive In, Summerfield. While a smaller crowd than in “High Season,” the birds are gone, the fun was still there. A beautiful, late Spring evening, warm with a gentle breeze. Ideal for ice cream with good friends and old cars. We even had “Chico,” our official chapter mascot join us. Chico is catered to by his staff, Ron and Virginia Storzbach. Some came for dinner as well as the ice cream, we met some new prospects for the club and we did a lot of laughing. That’s always good for the soul. Where would we be if we couldn’t laugh with our friends? If you missed this you weren’t having as much fun as you could have. Finally it was time to head home into the sunset. Later alligator!

A special surprise for everyone on tour to the Stafford ‘s home was an ice cream treat of KLONDIKE bars courtesy of KOTR. We were in “The Klondike Territory, ” as promised. Here Jack and Pat Armstrong enjoy the cool, creamy treats among the thousands of collectables of Pam and Frank Stafford.

The KOTR Magical Mystery Tour, April 29th, was a “High Season” finalé for the chapter before all the snow birds flew back home for the Summer. We traveled to the spectacular collections of Frank and Pam Stafford in their Ocala home. They too were preparing to flee to the mountains of North Carolina. The pictures show a glimpse of our spectacular drive and afternoon among those bits of nostalgia from our days of youth. There was a lot of oohing and aahing heard throughout the house and grounds. All this followed by a short trip to MOJO’s in Belleview for a great, if noisy meal, with friends and guests. This is the best way to attract new folk to the fold of AACA. Some returning to the fun.

Our hosts, Pam and Frank Stafford graciously welcome our 50+ group to their home, explaining the scope of their collections. And other people want to know why they need to join AACA. It is for outing such as this and the people and the friends we make along the way. That’s why!

Jim and Dee Murray chat with Jack and Pat Armstrong in the enchanting gardens at the rear entrance to the Stafford’s home. Nary a square foot of space was not involved in the collections.

The fabulous tour ends with old friends and new ones too sitting down together for a little chat to review the day and of course a good meal. The cars are great but the new friends are even better. That’s the way we like to do things in KOTR.

On June the second 2018, the

Antique Automobile Club of America

held it’s Annual Grand National Meet

In Greensburg, Pennsylvania. This show

is for those members that have already

won their Senior class honors.

KOTR/TVR member Jim Murray took

his 1936 Ford phaeton, “DeeDee,” to

Pennsylvania and came home with a

Grand National first in his class, 21F.

With over 500 cars to judge, the many teams made their way

through the fields to make their assessments. The team

Assigned to class 21f spent approximately 10 minutes going

over and under the car from top to bottom. Checking the top

and its fit and trim while another was looking underneath at

the chassis. A third judge was assigned interior trim while

yet another evaluated the engine compartment for authen-

ticity and quality of restoration. They only speak to the

owner if they need a door opened or have a question. It was

interesting to note that after the initial judging a second

team from the national awards committee inspected the car

three times and then conferred for awhile. It will be

interesting to see what that amounts to. Stay tuned!

When showing a car in an AACA show there is so much more than just a field full of cars. To me the extra-curricular activities are just as important as the show. A chance to meet and greet some of the finest people in this hobby of ours. The 2018 edition of the Annual Grand National Meet in Greensburg, PA had a number of Activities for participants. The big draw for me was a tour to the world famous “Falling Waters.” The stunning 1936 design home by Frank Lloyd Wright for the Kauffman family

of Pittsburgh. Two bus loads of old car folks took the one hour trip to Ohiopyle to view this masterpiece. Our group #5

waits for the docent to escort us through the home and explain the wonders of its design. Above, on the show field, a participant gets his Ford ready for judging. Everyone was busy making last minute detailing chores to get the cars just so for the judging team. Lots of fins in class 27b, production cars from 1956/1957. There were plenty of awards to go around for the owners and their cars, remember these were all winners previously.

For those of you newer members of AACA, each year the club holds a very special show for the best of it’s members cars. To be in this show a car must have won it’s senior ranking in judged events of AACA. These cars gather but once a year, this year the show drew in excess of 500 cars to Greensburg, Pennsylvania. This is a three day affair as are all AACA shows. The Western Pennsylvania Re-gion, with the help of other local clubs, put on a fantastic event and show for the good folks of AACA. The friends, the tours, the food and of course the cars made for a fun filled weekend. Cars came from as far as Colorado to participate and earn their AGNM ratings.

It has been months since Culver’s opened in The Villages. With the Winter crowd clamoring to experience this eatery we thought it best for the “KOTR family” to bide its time. With June most snowbirds have flown the coop and now we “FROGS” can once again enjoy the many restaurants here at our leisure.

Although this Friday was a day of off and on rain a crowd of over 20 members and friends came out for ice cream, the universal treat. Some came for dinner as well and some came for the specialty desserts. We had long time AACA members, 55 year veteran of AACA, and we had some “wanna bees” too. This is a great way to show just what AACA is all about. Great folks, gorgeous cars and good times. Next month, July13th, it’s going to be Ollie’s Fro-zen Custard.

Above left, Rich Courmettes and Ellen Harcourt show us their flavors. There was a lot of laughing going on so it must have been a good time for all.

KKOTR’s emphasis is to spend quality time on the road with our wonderful cars. Occasionally we do cruise-ins to let people know who we are. Then there are times when we take our

show on the road to those that cannot get out and about as we do. We like to visit the assisted living centers in the area so that those residents get a chance to relive the good old days as we do each and every month of the year. On June 11th we visited Summerfield Suites for a special Father’s Day treat for all the Pops and Moms there to enjoy.

KOTR had a nice turn out for a “Father’s Day” treat for the residents of Summerfield Suites. We had nine cars including two from a guest, Frank and Dee Odonnell from The Villages. Frank and Dee just moved to The Villages just four months ago and are anxious to get going on the local AACA scene. In addition to lunch each car was presented with a detailing kit. A big thank you to Anita Pepin and staff at Summerfield Suites.

The first activity under new region president, Jimmy Cipollone, was a come out and meet the new AACA. An out-reach to all of the old car enthusiasts in The Villages. The time for fussing over members is in the past, that we can all work together for the good of everyone and have fun doing so. As everyone is fully aware AACA is all about driving somewhere for dinner. TVRAACA made it easy going, just a short trip to Odell Recreation Center for some great hotdogs and delicious burgers. This was a pot luck dinner with the side dishes pro-vided by the guests. DJ AL Brady kept the tunes flowing for the evening and had the crowd doing the “electric slide” 60s style with “Long, Tall Sally” as well as the slow dances too.

The evening was all about getting out in our cars for a simple dinner with our friends. There were plenty of cool cars for the viewing. More than enough hotdogs and oodles of burgers to satisfy the hungry crowd. Most everyone had their own slant on the menu as well with additional side dishes for all to

share. We made many new friends this evening, some may even decide to come on board with AACA. We love to share the good times and welcome their participation. As you can see we had a nice display of old cars ranging from originals to customs. AACA isn’t all about show cars, it’s all about the good people that enjoy each other and their cars no matter what their style. After all it is still just a hobby for us.

This is the second year that KOTR held the honor of being the feature club at the June Spanish Springs cruise in and it rained once again, putting the kibosh on our tailgate party. We had to proceed as planned however. This being our third anniversary it was decided to offer our members and guests an upscale choice for munching on, Arby’s sliders. Add to that some chips and ice cold water for hydrating on a hot afternoon. Al l participants were surprised at the fare, not something that is done by other clubs. But then KOTR is not just another old car club, we do it with style. While The Villages cruise ins during “high season,” January, February and March, can draw as many as 250 cars June generally brings out just over one hundred automobiles. With majorettes and the drum corps along with the cheerleaders and the live band, Mpire, there was plenty of entertainment for the crowd.

In spite of the early rain just as we were going into the town square and lasting until nearly 6:00 p.m. we did manage to have a good time and met many new folks. Some of which have decided to join our little chapter, just for the fun of it! Seems as though what people want to do is drive their old car to dinner or ice cream or what ever to be with friends that like old cars too.

We had plenty of sliders to go around, 100 to be exact. But do to the weather several of our members chose to stay home so the extras (17) we took to the firemen and EMTs on the way home. They always like the extra goodies when we have a party. Not all the spectators in Spanish Springs were car folk. Some were real dandies like Charlie above strutting around in his high-top PF Flyers, sun-glasses and visor. What a dude!
