RABBI AMY BERNSTEIN [email protected]

In November, your Board of Directors and Senior Staff spent two days at Camp Hess Kramer (we were the last to meet

there before the fire) to discuss ways that KI can address the many challenges facing Jewish institutions and what changes and innovations that might mean for KI. Later that month, 12 of us from KI attended the Reconstructing Judaism Convention in Philadelphia. It was remarkable to be with 700 people from the Movement learning, praying, eating, talking, laughing and singing. I was reminded of the power of belonging to this movement and moved by the values and ideals I heard from speaker after speaker.

In her address to us Shabbat morning, our President, Rabbi/Dr. Deborah Waxman said the following about the complicated times in which we live:

“We can choose wonder and gratitude and love, in so doing, we can cultivate resilience as we live out our values. We do this most powerfully in community in which we are celebrated and supported, educated and challenged, embraced and, at times, corrected. It is in community that we willingly submerge our individual interests to join ourselves to something larger. As Reconstructionists, we are building communities that honor difference and make space for it, this is profoundly Jewish and, at the same time, profoundly countercultural to the American commitment to individualism. This individualism in the digital era is growing ever more radical and ever more isolating. To remember our interconnectedness, to be open to awe, to choose love and praise—this is essential to our humanity. Jewish living, Jewish practice, Jewish teachings, Jewish community are all pathways toward deepening our humanity, deepening our connection to the divine and to each

other. Reconstructing Judaism is here to help you do this, to mirror it back to you, to amplify your experiments, your hopes and your successes.”I was reminded over and over again during the convention of the ways that the tenets and practices of Jewish living are essential to deepening our humanity. Those of us who attended the convention came back excited to explore the ways we can make these more accessible and more prevalent at KI. One way we will do this is to offer an alternative spiritual experience once a month at 5:30 p.m. before our regular Shabbat service, with the first one taking place on Friday, February 22. Using Jewish chant, meditation, mindfulness practice and other techniques, we will begin building a Jewish spiritual community together which we hope will evolve its own practice and become a thriving monthly gathering.

Rabbi Michael Strassfeld defined Judaism, in one of his talks to the convention, as “a technology that allows us to live our one life with meaning, awareness and purpose.” To explore how we can use the technology of Judaism to do just that, we are offering a series of learning sessions entitled “Jewish Mindfulness and Spirituality: Creating Lives

of Depth and Meaning” which will take place on March 6, March 13, April 3, April 24, May 8, May 15, May 29 and June 12 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Our learning will be practical, philosophical and experiential. We hope you will consider joining us for this exciting new series.

Three young adults from KI were accepted as Shapiro Fellows and attended convention. They all came back fired up and eager to begin Jewish young adult experiences and community here. We are so proud of their commitment and participation and are thrilled to hear that they want to create their young adult community here at KI!! Stay tuned for news about what they create!

Rabbi Strassfeld quoted a midrash that has God congratulating Moses upon the breaking of the tablets containing the Ten Utterances. He then said, of the current challenges to Judaism of meeting a rapidly changing modern society, that “this is a time of breaking the tablets not carefully preserving them.” He charged us with being brave and creative enough to break out of our habitual ways of “doing Jewish” and believes that this is the only way Jewish life and Jewish community will flourish in the near future. What is at stake, said nearly every teacher and expert we heard from, is the survival of non-Orthodox Jewish life. Please help us make that Jewish life and community a reality by helping us break the tablets. Bring us your ideas, your suggestions, your ideal spiritual experience, ideas for how to put our Jewish values into action and anything else you dream about seeing happen at KI. Everything is up for discussion, and no idea is beyond consideration. Together, let us recommit to building a strong and exciting Jewish future.

BERT KLEINMAN [email protected]

Sometimes the tradition spoke clearly to me. Other times I needed to tap into reconstruct-ed tradition to find personal meaning. Some things worked for me, some did not.

Kashrut was particularly challenging. There are some foods that are specifically forbidden in the Torah (like pork and shellfish). There are some combinations of foods that were specifically forbidden by the Rabbis based on their interpretation of Torah (meat and dairy). And there are some foods that need to be prepared in certain ways, again based on interpretation of the Torah.

Modern interpretations of the spiritual essence of kashrut emphasize ethics and concerns of today. Is kashrut about not eating specific foods? Or is it about the ethics of how the food is raised? Is food which destroys the earth or depletes resources kosher? Is food raised through the exploitation of workers kosher? Is food which damages our body kosher?

As Jews living in the 21st century, we each need to decide if ethics and our tradition have anything to do with what and how we eat… or not. For me the answer is they do, but what that means in terms of how I live is evolving. I no longer eat foods banned in the Torah and I don’t mix meat and dairy at the same meal. But I’ve yet to apply broader environmental and political criteria to my eating. What about you?

My mother, of blessed memory, made me great scrambled eggs and bacon for breakfast. The

bacon was crisp, tasted great… even better than the eggs. She poured the bacon fat from the pan into a Maxwell House coffee can and kept it in the refrigerator. Friday nights were special. She made my father, of blessed memory, his favorite: over-cooked pork roast. Often we’d go out to a neighborhood Chinese restaurant for another family treat: shrimp with lobster sauce.

My parents were very Jewish, culturally and ethically Jewish – what I like to call “orthodox secular” – but they had little use for the Jewish religion. They spoke a bit of Yiddish in the house and almost all their friends were Jewish. But we certainly didn’t eat Jewish… except for our frequent trips to delis in my native New York City. At the delis it was hot pastrami, salami, bagels and lox, and kasha varnishkes.

So why, as an adult in my 40s, did the idea of kashrut attract me? To be honest, I don’t recall. But I think it was part of my investigation of Jewish tradition at KI. One of the first things I learned at KI, in classes with Rabbi Reuben and the Holiday Workshop, was how broad and rich our tradition was, how there is so much to learn, so much to try out. I tried out going to services. I experimented with praying in English and in Hebrew. I started to explore the spiritual treasure called Shabbat.

from our INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTORNew staff welcome

Jerry Scharlin Interim Executive Director

I graduated from Kenter Canyon Elementary School, Paul Revere Jr. High School and Palisades High School. I am enjoying being back in Brentwood and Pacific Palisades, seeing the beautiful trees along the road and smelling the wonderful sea breeze. My family includes my wife, Elana, my daughters Michal and Talia, my son-in-law Rabbi Moshe and my grandchildren Ashira and Lev. When you see me, If you insist, I will show you pictures of the grandchildren. I’m looking forward to meeting and working with the Kehillat Israel Community.

I have come to truly appreciate the uniqueness of KI in just the few short weeks that I have been here.

The thoughts that immediately come to mind are warm, non-judgmental, thoughtful, uplifting, neighborhood hangout, musical treats, child paradise and friendship. KI is a hidden gem that I suspect would meet the needs of a great many of our increasingly diverse and searching community if we were more visible. In the time that I will be with you, I hope to be able to make modest contributions and help set the stage for the next meaningful period in the history of this beautiful community.

May the light of the Hanukkah candles we just lit inspire us to remember our people’s tradition to bring light where there is darkness, courage and comfort where there is fear.

education JEWISH EXPERIENCE CENTER

6 KI Newsletter | ourKI.org

During Veterans Day weekend, Jewish Experience Center teens participated in an Immigrant and Refugee Justice Trip to Phoenix, Nogales, and Tucson led by the Los Angeles-based social justice organization, Tzedek America. The experience

was framed by the words repeated throughout the Torah, “Love the stranger because you were once strangers.” Below are excerpts from our teens’ powerful reflections:

• “This year, on Veterans Day weekend, myself and other KI teens, along with teens from Leo Beck Temple and Temple Israel of Hollywood, were fortunate enough to go on a social action trip to Arizona with Tzedek America. Our trip focused on the current conflicts and issues in immigration to the U.S. from Mexico, Latin America, and South America. On our trip, we talked to a Rabbi, an immigration lawyer, a Jewish ICE agent, college students who are DACA recipients, an Arizona state representative, border patrol agents, volunteers, and immigrants. This experience opened my eyes up to what is going on in the world.”

• “The activity that affected me the most was the desert walk. I had no idea how many people are abused, injured, and even die before they make it to a place with people. I did not know that many people walk in circles for days until they die of dehydration. I was completely unaware of the items that people leave behind when they are running from a helicopter they see or a dangerous person. Another moment that we saw made me stop and think about what was going on happened at the border wall. We were walking parallel to it and we saw a family separated, with one half on the American side and one half on the Mexican side. These people were living less than a mile from each other but they could barely touch pinkies with one another. It amazed me how such a small line could have such a great impact on one’s life. This trip inspired me to want to do more, not only for this cause, but for many others. I feel like I have an obligation as a privileged person to help those who are not given the same opportunities as I am. I now understand just how much we need to do, and how much I individually can do.”

• “This trip gave me so many impactful experiences but the one that touched me the most and really made me understand a fraction of the hardship these courageous people go through was the desert walk. Led by a guide who spends her life helping undocumented people in our country, we walked out into the desert for only a couple miles. In this short time almost all of us got injured by cacti in some way and we all drained water bottle after water bottle.”

• “Everyone has a story, and yes, there are a lot of people to listen to, but each and every person deserves to be heard, deserves a chance to improve their life. Dehumanization at the border and in this country is a major issue, and too many people are unaware of it. This trip to Arizona was a reality check. I’m not living in a bubble. Nobody is. Unfair and inhumane treatment of immigrants is all over the country and chances are, it’s probably not that far away from you. So, make the effort. I’m glad I did, because the more people that know what’s going on, the sooner things can change.”

Volume I: A Time for Planting: The First Migration, 1654-1820 by Eli FaberIn the autumn of 1654, 23 Jews aboard the bark Sainte Catherine landed at the town of New Amsterdam to establish the first permanent Jewish settlement in North America. In A Time for Planting, Eli Faber recounts these earliest days of Jewish life in America, as Jews from Lisbon to Amsterdam to London extended the wanderings of their

centuries-old diaspora. This is the first volume in a series we have in the library. Read them all. (771.1 FAB)

The Jews in America by Arthur Hertzberg A controversial examination of the Jewish ‘’success story” in American that questions notions of identity, assimilation and ethnicity. (771 HER)

The American Jewish Album 1654 to the Present by Allon Schoener Over 500 illustrations document the Jewish contribution to American politics, commerce, industry, finance, labor, and the arts and highlight this survey of daily life and great Jewish personalities (770)

The Secret War Against the Jews by John Loftus and Mark Aarons Using thousands of previously top-secret documents and interviews with hundreds of current and former spies, Loftus and Aarons, both veteran investigators, Nazi-hunters and authors, present a compelling case that numerous Western countries, especially the United States and Great Britain, have conducted repeated and

willful spying missions on Palestine and, later, Israel over many decades. (772 LOF)

The Rest of Us by Stephen Birmingham Birmingham, better known for Our Crowd about the arrival of German Jews in New York, writes now about the wave of Eastern European Jewish immigrants who swept into New York in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by way of Ellis Island. Not welcomed by the settled German Jews, the new arrivals were tough, passionate, and

determined, and in no time they were moving up from the ghetto tenements of New York’s Lower East Side to make their marks and their fortunes across the country in a variety of fields, from media and popular music to fashion, motion pictures, and even organized crime. (771.5 BIR)

The Downtown Jews by Ronald Sanders A history of the 1880s through World War II told mostly from the standpoint of the Jewish Forward. (771.5 SAN)

Chutzpah by Alan M. Dershowitz Dershowitz wrestles with the ideas of what it means to be a Jew in America today. (770.9 DER)

The Deadliest Lies by Abraham H. Foxman The former head of the Anti-Defamation League shows how old stereotypes associated with the most virulent forms of bigotry have been resurfacing and taking subtle new forms, particularly around Israel and the so-called “Jewish Lobby.” (770.9 FOX)

Jews and the New American Scene by Seymour Martin Lipset and Earl Raab The authors discuss the Jewish success and acceptance in the United States, as well as the problems of assimilation and the erosion of Jewish identity. (770.9 LIP)

The New Country: Jewish Immigrants in America by Abraham Shulman Over a period of 20 years around the turn of the century, over 2 million Jews left Eastern Europe to come to the United States. This book gives a picture of what they did when they got here and how they adapted to

their new country. (771.5 SH)

Number Our Days by Barbara Myerhoff When noted anthropologist Myerhoff received a grant to explore the process of aging, she decided to study some elderly Jews from Venice, California, rather than to report on a more exotic people. The story of the rituals and lives of these remarkable old people will enthrall you.

(777.1 Myerhoff)

Profiles in American Judaism by Marc Lee Raphael This book provides perspective on the historical development of the different branches of American Judaism. (770 RA)

Tough Jews by Rich Cohen Tough Jews traces a generation of Jewish gangsters from New York City’s Lower East Side to its Upper East Side. This is a (sometimes) gruesome but funny history of the Jewish gangster. You can almost hear the squeal of tires and the rattle of gunfire as you read. (770.9 COH)

Philadelphia Jewish Life 1940-1985 edited by Murray Friedman This book contains over 250 illustrations - from the Urban Archives at Temple University and the Philadelphia Jewish archives at the Balch Institute – and 14 essays

on Jewish life in the urban Eastern city of Philadelphia from 1940-1985. (774.3 Fr)

A Hidden Gem: Our KI LibraryThere are a lot of things going on in the United States now. Perhaps this is a good time to figure out our Jewish history and place in this country. This has been a subject of ongoing scrutiny since Jews first arrived in the U.S. Below are some books from the KI Library that might help with your study.

• Thanks to our congregation's extraordinary advocacy and generosity, KI will provide 210,000 pounds of food to the Westside Food Bank, a nearly 8% increase over our initial goal of 195,000 pounds! As a result, this year alone, we will provide over 168,000 meals to those in need.

Since KI's inaugural High Holy Days Food Drive in 2001, we have distributed 613 tons of food through the Westside Food Bank. KI can truly be proud of the role it plays as a faith community in helping to end hunger on the Westside.

• The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum will be honoring KI members Linda and Tony Rubin at its What You Do Matters: 2019 Los Angeles Dinner on March 6, 2019.
