Statistics made a big impression in 2009 as �nancial facts and �gures took pride of place in the media. With times tough for most businesses and in many cases pro�t ratios swaying the conceptual concerns of a project, it’s unsurprising that statistical representations have found their way into design communities. Heavily used in graphic design towards the end of last year, 2010 sees stats becoming more apparent in other creative disciplines.

London-based jewellery and accessories studio, Super Fertile, has taken inspiration from the economic downturn for its Summer 2010 collection, Cra$h, a literal interpretation of unemployment, debt and national spending ironically celebrated in jewelled medallions. Bold and vulgar, the range makes a dual political and fashion statement.

Danish studio Hvass&Hannibal recently presented its latest project, Losing The Plot at Kemistry Gallery, London, which seeks to express cold statistical information as illustrative, often abstract works.

Taking the edge o� everything from probability theory to geographical data by using wooden sculpture, simple patterns and joyful, slightly muted colours, viewers are encouraged to address how factual information can be reinterpreted; a skill that will prove useful in a culture where this micro-trend is increasingly data friendly.

Dutch artist Willem Besselink’s >RE:ID is an interactive piece completed in connection with the Rotterdam Museumnight Foundation, which uses physical changes such as relaying pacing stones on top of one another to signify the walking of people across a space. All happening live, it turns the venue’s physical attributes into monolithic bar charts and carefully mapped diagrams showing foot tra�c �ow.

Stockholm-based Bigert & Bergström takes a digital approach in Tomorrow’s Weather, which shows statistical predictions from the Danish Meteorological Institute as a double helix of illuminating globes. Making full use of the height of Danish media �rm Aller’s central foyer, the spiralling orbs change colour with the changing readings, translating statistics into a medium that is both useful and architecturally beautiful.

With regards to interiors, we are likely to see information coming to life in both fun and austere ways. Although not relating to a speci�c set of data, the aesthetics of Josselin Zaïgouche’s Miam table hint at what could be to come as furniture and product designers begin to represent a bigger slice of the statistics-in�uenced pie. Look out for this trend in large corporate spaces, public spaces and in the subtle details of minimal interiors.

The recent ARC Show, the annual architectural, retail and commercial lighting expo in London, o�ered a spread of creative lighting design that could be divided into two very obvious camps; LED and non-LED based products.

Traditionally casting an unfriendly light, Inspired By Design’s hand-blown glass solution softened the e�ect of the LEDs encapsulated within its shell, resulting in something that e�ortlessly brings this lighting technology into the home. The Lighting Bible presented new pieces that were mainly discreetly wall-mounted, creating soft, inviting illumination, as predicted in Mix’s previous article (December 2009) discussing skin-friendly lighting trends.

Student representation was mainly from Brunel University, which o�ered a selection of work that focused on 3 watt LED usage. A keen trend for the projection of images and logos was spotted in student’s contributions, showing the shift in lighting’s commercial usage to include more branding and advertising applications.

Also at the ARC Show was Kinetica’s satellite gallery, giving visitors a peek at what was held at its main space o�-site. Although more of a digital arts festival than a lighting exhibition, big names such as Jason Bruges Studio were amongst the contributors, using the opportunity to create explorative light, sound and interactive media pieces.

Of note were Roseline de Thélin’s 3-D portraits, Interactive Agents’ Hydro Acoustic Big Bang Filter, which allowed users to ‘play’ giant tubes containing light refracted through liquid and Thames Valley University’s Olympic Games themed piece. Architectural applications were a key interest; Jason Bruges discussed using programmed lighting to temporarily divide spaces and turn buildings into 4-D experiences.

The ARC Show and Kinetica Art Fair neatly dovetailed into each other providing something for every lighting enthusiast, whether their interests lie in high-quantity bargaining or mind-bending experiments.
