Identifying Subject and Predicate

Types of Fragments

• Phrase– group of words that has neither

subject nor predicate

• Dependent Clause– group of words that has both subject

and predicate, but that does not express a complete thought

Examples of Phrases

• walking quietly along the corridor• to believe everything seen or heard• the writings on the wall• millions of miles apart• beyond the seven seas• understanding a difficult person• washed, dried, and folded

Examples of Dependent Clauses

• because they love each other deeply

• unless he talks to the manager• although their families were not in

good terms• while Sharmaine waits at the

cafeteria• wherever the mother went
