Kindergarten February 2019 Readers Workshop In this unit, “Bigger Books, Bigger Reading Muscles” Kindergarten students will be reading fictional stories that are more challenging. They will pay particular attention to patterns in their stories. These patterns will help students read more smoothly and better understand the books they are reading. Students will learn strategies to figure out unknown words: first by using the initial letter, then by using beginning consonant clusters (blends and digraphs), and by using ending sounds. This unit will focus in on the comprehension of texts. Students will learn to ask and answer questions about what they are reading. The priority standards that will be addressed during this unit are: Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes). With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text. With prompting and support, retell familiar stories, including key details. With prompting and support, identify characters, settings, and major events in a story. Writers Workshop In this unit, “How-to Books: Writing to Teach Others”, Kindergarten students will write informative books that will teach the reader the process of how to do something. They will add detailed information to their writing by labeling their diagrams. At the end of this unit, students will publish their story and celebrate their writing by sharing it with their classmates. The priority standards that will be addressed during this unit are: Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic. With support, respond to questions from peers to add details to strengthen writing as needed. In the Go Math program, Kindergarten students will be reading and writing numbers to 20. They will learn to count forwards to 20 and then back to 0. They will also learn how to compare and order numbers to 20. Towards the end of the month students will begin counting past 21. They will even count to 100 using a 100s chart. The priority standards that will be addressed during this unit are: K.CC.A.3 Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0–20 K.NBT.A.1 Compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each composition or decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 18 =10 + 8); understand that these numbers are composed of ten ones and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine ones.
