The  reviewers  tried  to compare  Tarantion's  other movies such as Pulp Fiction ,Jackie  Brown  and Reservoir  Dogs  with  Kill Bill.According  to  them  Kill Bill  was  not  as  good  as those movies

The  director  used  black  & white  cinematography  for grim and fight scenes. This helped  the   movie  to receive an X rating (instead of R) for violence

Positive WordcloudLooking at the reviews one can make out that the reviewers were expecting some sort of backdrop to the main character for Kill Bill Vol1. Director must have realized this ,so he introduced a back-story in Kill Bill Vol2 which was liked by the audience ,particularly because it was a new way(using anime) to tell a story
