IN ‘When God Was A Rabbit’ by Sarah Winman young Elly’s world is shaped by those who inhabit it: her loving but maddeningly distractable parents; a best friend who smells of chips and knows exotic words like ‘slag’; an ageing fop who tap dances his way into her home, a Shirley Bassey impersonator who trails close behind; lastly, of course, a rabbit called God. In a childhood peppered with moments both ordinary and extraordinary, Elly’s one constant is her brother Joe.
Twenty years on, Elly and Joe are fully grown and as close as they ever were. Until, that is, one bright morning and a single, earth-shattering event that threatens to destroy their bond for ever.
THE Grainne Mulvey School of Ballet And Modern Dance (formerly Aedeen O’Hagan School Of Ballet) returns to The Watergate Theatre with three performances of ‘Adventures Under The Sea’.

THE Kilkenny Rhythm & Roots festival is only around the corner and a number of shows are close to selling out including the one by the brilliant John Grant. The former singer/songwriter with Bella Union cult favouritess ‘The Czars’, recently released an extraordinary debut solo album made with Midlake.Everyone has a favourite band or singer they reckon is subject to criminal neglect. That John Grant’s eff ortlessly rich, expansive baritone, couched in
typically heartbreaking, lush melody, hasn’t found a wider audience many would consider a crime. But no longer. Because Grant’s fi rst solo album is so undeniably great that the world will surely listen.
He plays The Watergate Theatre on Sunday, May 1 and it will surely be one of the talking points of the festival. Get your ticket from Rollercoaster Records, St Kieran’s Street before they are all gone.
THIS coming Sunday as part of the ‘Music in Kilkenny’ programme pianist Hugh Tinney plays a special concert in Calista Hall, Ballytobin, Callan.
The award winning pianist will perform three recitals of European piano masterworks including Debussy ‘Estampes’, Fauré ‘Nocturne No.6 in D fl at Op. 63’, Raymond Deane ‘Mezzotint and hitherandthithering (from Noctuary)’, Debussy ‘Images Book 1’, Tristan Murall ‘Le Mandragore (homage to Ravel) and Ravel ‘Gaspard de la Nuit’.
Since winning fi rst prize at the 1983 Pozzoli and 1984 Paloma O’Shea piano competitions in Italy and Spain, Hugh Tinney has performed in more than 30 countries throughout Europe, the US, South America and the Far East. Festival engagements have taken him across the globe and he has broadcast in more than 15 countries.
Tickets €15 (€10 concession oaps and students). Further details from Susan Proud (056) 7761497 or email [email protected].
