Our staff does not grant permission for participants to leave the program facilities, nor do we insist that they stay. The decision as to when a child arrives at the program or when and with whom they leave, is a matter arranged between the parent and child. Please speak to the Program Supervisor regarding our supervision policies.

ABOUT KIDS UNIVERSITY Continued Kids University is an out-of-school-time recreation program offering educational and sports oriented classes to elementary age children (kindergarten through 6th grade). Participants must be enrolled in a specific class to attend.

WHEN AND WHERE Our Hours and Locations:

Fernwood Elementary: 3:00–6:00 pm

Transportation for a maximum of 14 students from Canyon Creek Elementary is available, as well as a maximum of 13 students to off-site class locations.

Typical Afternoon Schedule:

PROGRAM MEMBERSHIP Children must have a current Program or Facility Membership to register and participate in Kids University.

PAYMENT, CREDITS AND REFUND POLICY Payment is due on the 25th of the month prior to classes. If payment has not been made as of the 1st of the month you will be contacted to pick your child up and will not be able to attend until a payment arrangement has been worked out or the payment has been resolved.

For cancellations or transfers, we require two weeks written notice prior to the date of change. Failure to do so will result in no refund or credit. Deposits are non-refundable but can be transferred and used by other family members or for other programs. Exceptions to this policy will only be made by the Program Director in extreme emergency situations, and documentation mustmustmustmust be provided to support the request. Please contact Tiffany Feist with any questions about payment or payment break down.

TRANSPORTATION Transportation in the afternoon will be provided after school from Canyon Creek. Transportation is limited. Maximum 14 students per day. No transportation will be provided for children attending classes at a later time in the afternoon. Children from any school are welcome to attend but transportation will not be provided by the YMCA.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS Continued

IT’S MY BUSINESS Geared towards and older group, this two-part class will be focused on teaching students about economics and to enjoy the world of commerce. During the first hour, students will run and work at their own business. They will have the choice of what products they would like to sell, and will be responsible for the financial aspect of big business. Students will also have opportunities to shop at other businesses using money they earn from working at their own. The second hour of class will focus more on the accounting and financial aspect of being a business owner. Students will learn about bank accounts and how to balance a checkbook..

Mon 3:45–4:45 pm Cost: FM $253/trimester PM $275/trimester GROUP MANIA If you enjoy group games and team challenges, join us for Group Mania! This Class will give students a chance to not only build a strong team, but increase their group interaction skills. We will enjoy group games inside or outside depending on weather!

Mon 3:45–4:45 pm Cost: FM $132/trimester PM $143/trimester SPACE EXPLORERS! Come and explore our solar system and possibly even create your own! During Space Explorers students will learn the ins and outs of how our planet and others revolve around each other. A few things we will learn include details about planets, stars, black holes and comets! Once the children have become experts they will have an opportunity to create their own planet and solar systems!

SPEED STACKS Based on the curriculum designed by Speed Stacks Worldwide, students will have a blast while not even realizing they are expending energy and building concentration.

KARATE (Ages 7 & Up Only – 15 Students Max) Presented by Evergreen Karate, students will learn the ten core concepts. This class is offered as a two-day package and is open to skill levels from beginners to advanced. First-time uniform is included in price.

YOGA Do you enjoy the relaxing practice of yoga stretches and meditation? In this kid-level yoga class, we will learn different yoga poses, practice relaxation, build our muscles, and learn a little about the history of yoga!


DRAW ME A PICTURE Beginning with first steps in drawing to developing technique, learn how to create cartoons, illustrations, realistic drawings, or how to sketch just for fun.

ROCK CLIMBING (13 Students Max) Rock Climbing is an exciting adventure activity that challenges students physically and mentally. Requiring more flexibility and balance than strength, rock climbing is a sport for everyone. Students are invited to participate in this two-hour class no matter their past climbing experience. This class will be held at the Northshore YMCA rock wall, weather permitting. Students will travel by mini-bus and return to Fernwood by 5:00 p.m.

Wed 1:35–3:10 pm Cost: FM $276/trimester PM $299/trimester Y-5-2-1-0 It's time to help kids take their first steps toward a healthier mind and body! Y5210, is designed to teach kids healthy choices and remind them that every day, they should consume at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables, have 2 or less hours of “screen time,” 1 hour of exercise and 0 sugar-sweetened drinks. Students will enjoy learning about different exercise and food ideas as well as receive take home challenges to share with their family!

Wed 1:35–3:10 pm Cost: FM $120/trimester PM $130/trimester DODGE • DUCK • DIVE Ready to dodge, duck, dive, dip and dodge? Kids will get great exercise while playing different variations of this classic game.

Wed 1:35–3:10 pm Cost: FM $156/trimester PM $169/trimester CARDS FOR ALL AGES Plan and win popular card games in this fun and exciting class! Learn classic cards games and build numerical skills, analytical thinking, and strengthen your strategic planning. A few games we plan to learn include: Go Fish, Phase 10, Speed, Frustration, War and much more!

ALL ABOUT ART Do you enjoy painting, drawing, sculpting, and other elements of the arts? Join us for an hour of hands-on activities where you’re sure to further your knowledge and skills in the realm of art!

Thurs 3:45–4:45 pm Cost: FM $144/trimester PM $156/trimester

ROLL & BOWL Come and spend an afternoon at the Kids U lanes. Learn bowling technique and how to score through bowling games and activities. By the end of the trimester, you’ll be throwing strikes!


ACADEMIC HOUR Kids University has partnered with the teachers of Northshore to ensure your student is reaching their full potential academically. We will communicate with teachers about lesson plans and homework, as well as provide worksheets based around what your child is learning in school. Students will also have support from Kids University staff as needed. Separate classes offered on Tuesday and Thursday.


BUILDING BOOM Build, Bang, Boom! Each week this class will let you use your imagination to build your very own structures. Working in small groups and individually, using different materials such as Lego's, blocks, recycled materials, kenex, and more. You will be challenged each week to make something bigger and better.

FANTASTIC FITNESS Stretch your mind and body in this fitness class. We’ll do more than just a few laps around the gym here! Get active and have some fun with your classmates during hula-hoop contests, Capture the Flag and even Yoga!

SPORTS OF ALL SORTS The perfect class to get moving outdoors; we’ll have fun playing a new sport each week. No matter what your skill level, every student will learn some new tricks for old favorites like baseball, and kickball. We’ll also explore some new active games, plus get outdoors every chance we get!


BOARD GAMES GALORE The perfect way to wind-down a school week, we’ll simply have fun in this class. Students will have the opportunity to choose between active group games, free gym time, and other simple activities.


FOLLIES At the end of each trimester, we invite our families to a talent event, celebrating the accomplishments of the Kids University children. There will be a performance or display from each class. Snacks are provided.

CLOSURE POLICIES NON-STUDENT DAYS AND BREAKS Kids University will be closed on Non-Student Days and during breaks. Licensed Child Care is offered at selected Northshore YMCA child care sites. Please call Northshore YMCA Registration to locate a site near you at 425-485-9797. Registration and payments must be made at the Northshore YMCA. Payments are not refundable or credited for unused days.

SCHOOL CLOSURES Kids University is closed when the Northshore School District has closed the school. We follow the Northshore School District closure policy found on their web site (www.nsd.org). There is no refund or credit if school is closed.

If the District sends students home midday due to snow or inclement weather, Kids University will be closed. If it begins to snow during Kids University, the program will remain open until all students have been picked up.

POLICIES LATE POLICY You must pick your child up at the end of your child’s last class. For example, if your child’s last class ends at 5:00 pm you must be there at that time. There is a five-minute grace period before being considered late. Three late occurrences will result in suspension or termination without a refund or credit. If you are late, your child will sit in a class for supervision purposes, but will not be allowed to participate in a class.

SPECIAL NEEDS ACCOMODATIONS YMCA Staff members are encouraging, patient and helpful in paving a pathway for children with mild and moderate disabilities to succeed at the YMCA Youth Programs. We are not equipped nor staffed to work with children who need significant assistance with personal care, constant one on one support or have great difficulty managing their behavior in a classroom setting. Reasonable accommodations will be made on request for persons with disabilities.

YMCA CODE OF CONDUCT The YMCA is committed to providing a positive atmosphere that is safe and inclusive for all in our community. Therefore, the YMCA of Greater Seattle has adopted a code of conduct to govern the actions and behavior of all people while in our facilities and while participating in YMCA programs. Individuals are expected to:

• Uphold the YMCA core values of respect, responsibility, honesty, caring.

• Provide an atmosphere free of derogatory or unwelcome comments, conduct or actions of a sexual nature, or actions based on an individual’s sex, race, ethnicity, age, religion, disability, sexual orientation or any other legally protected status.

• Be respectful and cooperative with YMCA staff and others. The following will NOT be tolerated at YMCA facilities and in our YMCA programs:

• Abusive, harassing and/or obscene language or gestures. • Threats of harm, physical aggression, violent acts, or bullying. • Weapons of any kind. • Smoking. • Damaging or defacing YMCA property. • Possession, sale, use or being under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs.

• Offensive and unlawful conduct.

YOUTH PARTICIPANTS EXPECTATIONS Please review with your child prior to attending our programs.

RESPECT • Staff and other participants at all times. • No name calling, swearing, teasing, hitting, fighting, or bullying. • Listen and follow directions. • Pay attention. • The YMCA’s equipment and property by not abusing, stealing, vandalizing, or destroying it.

• Other people’s property.

RESPONSIBILITY • Be responsible for your actions and your things. • Clean up after yourself • Put everything back where it belongs. • You are responsible for the loss, damage to, and damage inflicted by your personal items that you bring to the program.

CARING • Share with others. • Exit all classrooms, activity areas, and other facilities in a quiet and orderly manner.

HONESTY • Be honest with yourself, your parents, YMCA staff, and other YMCA participants.

• Talk to a staff member about conflicts with others.

DO NOT BRING ANY OF THE FOLLOWING: • Weapons (real or fake) • Drugs • Alcohol/Tobacco • Money • Valuable toys and cards (including Walkmans, cell phones Gameboys, CDs, etc)

In the event that your child is causing a danger to themselves, to others, or to the YMCA property, we will request that you pick up your child immediately.
