Kindy Best Prepares your Child for School

Give your 4 year old the beststart in life with a QueenslandGovernment-approvedkindergarten program.

They will be taught by qualifiedearly childhood teachers fortypically 15 hours a week, 40weeks of the year.

Children who take part in aquality kindergarten program inthe year before Prep are betterprepared for school thanks tothe learning opportunities, experiences and friendshipsthey enjoy at kindy.

Kindergarten programsdevelop children’s abilitiesthrough a world of carefullyplanned and managed play.

Children's entertainer JayLaga'aia is supporting theQueensland Government'scommitment to ensuring all fouryear olds across the state havegreater access to agovernment-approvedkindergarten program.

He is a proud father of eightchildren and passionate aboutthe value of a quality earlychildhood education - all ofJay's children have participatedin a kindergarten program.

"I've experienced, first-handthrough my own children, theimportance of a kindergartenprogram," Jay said.

"As parents, we all want thebest for our children so I'mexcited to help educateQueensland parents on the

value of a quality early yearseducation."

Here are some key points aboutkindergarten programs:

· children are at least fouryears old by 30 June in theirkindy year

· Health Care Card holders canaccess kindergartenprograms at low or no cost

· kindergarten programproviders have access toculturally appropriateresources to support children, including culturally-specificstories and toys

· approved kindergartenprograms have the ‘kindy tick’(see below) and are deliveredby qualified early childhoodteachers

· fees apply and are set byindividual services.

What to look for in akindergarten program

Approved kindergarten programshave the ‘kindy tick’, whichmeans they meet thegovernment criteria for a qualityearly childhood educationprogram.

Programs with the kindy tick are:

● taught by qualified earlychildhood teachers

● run for at least 600 hours ayear, such as 15 hours a weekfor 40 weeks

● offered at kindergarten andlong day care services to giveyou more choice.

● aligned with the QueenslandKindergarten LearningGuideline or QueenslandStudies Authority accreditedlearning program.

It is important when choosing akindergarten program provider thatyou consider your child's needsand your family's circumstances.

Before deciding you should checkwhether:

● the service's operating hours,

days and kindergarten

program times suit your family

● places are available for new

enrolments

● the fees suit your budget

● there are any costs over and

above the fees

● there is a fee to be placed on

the waiting list

● the service offers before

and/or after kindergarten care

● how children with additional

needs are supported to take

part in the kindergarten

program.

Once you think you have found aprogram provider that meets yourneeds, you should visit the serviceto meet the teachers, see thegrounds and facilities andexperience the atmosphere. Thisprovides a great opportunity to askany questions you may have andshare information about your child.

Aspiring actors and engineers are among the year twelve students who have made it through a rigorous selection processto be named Moreton Bay Boys’ College captains for 2013.Bayside local, Thomas Thorne, has been selected to lead the school as College Captain along with Vice-CaptainAshleigh Dorman, Service Captain Steffan Mitchell, Cultural Captain Yianni Sines and Sports Captain Kyle McCann.Thomas Thorne, 16, who has been at the college since 2005, said he was looking forward to working alongside the otherleaders and had already set a number of goals.“It was very exciting when I found out I had been chosen as one of the school leaders but now the selection process isover it’s time to deliver on the promises we’ve made,” he said."I aim to ensure each student feels like they belong to the school as a whole rather than differentiating between the junioror senior schools.

“It’s a college where everyone knows each other andyou’re not just a number, but of course there are alwaysareas to improve on and that’s why we’ve set an agendafor what we want to achieve this year."Helping Thomas achieve these goals will be Vice-CaptainAshleigh Dorman who has also attended MBBC since2005.“Communication between all the grades is definitely thekey to making sure all the boys at the college are part ofour community,” Ashleigh said.“I'm very excited to be a part of the school’s leadershipteam and I don’t under-estimate for a minute thechallenges ahead.“I have made great friends at MBBC and I’m lookingforward to going through my final year of study with boyswho I’ve known since year eight.”

Thomas and Ashleigh both have university in their sights for 2014 with Thomas hoping to study civil engineering andAshleigh aiming to study acting.MBBC graduating students from 2012 who were eligible for an OP rank received 100% OP scores from 1-10. 2012NAPLAN results recorded MBBC as the best performing boys’ school in the area and the most improved.Moreton Bay Boys’ College is an accredited IB World School on Brisbane’s southern bayside offering internationallybenchmarked programs, multiple learning pathways and a broad range of opportunities for boys.

NEW CAPTAINS ARE TOMORROW’S LEADERS

Page 10: Kids To Do eMag - March

Articles of Interest Education

Five bayside girls have made it through a rigorous selection process to be named as the new Moreton Bay College

captains for 2013.

Hannah Russell will lead the student body as College Captain and will have the support of Anwen Thomas who has

been selected as Vice-Captain, Sport Captain Mia Cunningham, Cultural Captain Sarah Lambourne and WorshipCaptain Elizabeth Tuckett.

The process of attaining one of these coveted roles is a thorough and lengthy one. Written nominations are called for

and feedback from staff and fellow students is collected to assist with short listing. Interviews are held, with questions

which focus on leadership capacity, and offers are finally made after extensive consideration of the accumulated data.

Head of Moreton Bay College, Dr Deborah Priest, said

this year’s leaders all demonstrated quality leadership

skills and she was looking forward to working with them.

“They’re a great group of girls who will do a fantastic job

leading the entire college and strengthening ties with the

community,” she said.

College Captain, Hannah Russell, who has been a

student since 2009, said while she had hoped for a

leadership position she was still very surprised when it

was announced.

“I was really shocked. There were so many worthy and

capable girls who applied for the position,” she said.

“Knowing that I have the full support of all students and teachers has given me a boost in confidence to carry out the

duties expected of me in my new role.

“As College Captain, I want to encourage every girl at MBC to reach their full potential in every aspect of college life.

“We’re all ‘Bay Girls’ and it’s really important that we can join together as a strong body of young leaders to build on the

solid foundations of past captains.

“I’m looking forward to stepping back at the end of this year and seeing positive changes that have been made for the

college and its community.”

Hannah said she was excited and prepared for a challenging year ahead between her studies and sporting

commitments.

“I’m heavily involved in touch football and swimming so it’s definitely going to be tough but I think it’s important to get on

top of tasks early and prioritise,” she said.

“I’m hoping to go on a gap year and study in the United Kingdom when I finish school.”
