Fixed Fire SuppressionAn overview
Kidde Fire Suppresion
Kidde History
1877 – Walter Kidde is born in Hoboken, NJ on March 7
1917 – Walter Kidde Company is founded
1917 – Kidde takes ownership of the Rich patent for the use of carbon
dioxide for suppression of large fires, particularly aimed at ship fires
1918 – Produced the first integrated smoke detection and carbon dioxide
extinguishing system for use on board ships
• All suppressants extinguish fires by heat extraction
• Two groups:

Kidde Fire Protection
Carbon Dioxide Fire Suppression
System
Basic
Information
Kidde - a history with CO2
• World Leader in CO2 Fire Suppression
Technology since 1930s
• Use originated from protection of ships’
engine rooms & cargo spaces
• Approvals in place; USA & European
• Extensive list of installations in all
industries
The Basic Properties of CO2
• A colourless, odourless, non-corrosive gas
• Density 1.52 times that of air
• We exhale CO2 at 3-4%
• Inexpensive & readily available
• Effective on wide range of fires
• Versatile: high pressure / low pressure & total flood / local application
• Clean - no mess, CO2 dissipates to atmosphere
Environment
The Environment
• CO2 is normally present in the atmosphere
at 0.039%
• Zero ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential)
• GWP 1 (Global Warming Potential)
• It is a by-product of the combustion
process, e.g. fossil fuels
• Produced as a by-product of industry
Safety
Concentration by Volume – Likely Effects
Concentration Likely Effects
3%Gives rise to deeper breathing, reduced hearing ability, coupled with
headache, an increase in blood pressure and pulse rate.
4-5%
Stimulation of the respiratory centre occurs resulting in deeper and
more rapid breathing. Signs of intoxication will become evident after
30 minutes exposure.
5-10%Breathing becomes more laborious with headache and loss of
judgment.
10-100%
When the carbon dioxide concentration increases above 10%,
unconsciousness will occur in under 1 minute and unless prompt
action is taken, further exposure to high levels will eventually result in
death
Individual tolerances will vary widely: the effects of inhaling varying concentrations of
carbon dioxide are likely to be;
