RECTOR PESET
The name of the Rector Peset Hall of Residence of the Universitat de Valencia is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Joan Baptista Peset i Aleixandre who was the Principal of the University of Valencia from 1932 to 1934 and dean of the Faculty of Medicine from 1930 to 1931.
Dr. Peset actively dedicated his investigations to different public health issues, including fighting meningitis and smallpox epidemics among others. He worked for the City Council where he organised vaccination campaigns addressed at the eradication of epidemics in the town of Valencia. Grown up in a liberal atmosphere, he was a republican in favour of the left and as such was chosen MEP in February 1936. In July 1936 a “coup d'état” headed by Franco led to a civil war that lasted up to April 1939. During this time Dr. Peset continued his work as MEP that he combined with humanitarian tasks and the supervision of several war hospitals. Along with other 15.000 people, the last days of March 1939 he awaited a boat in the port of Alicante to go to into exile. The boat never arrived and all the people there were sent to prison and concentration camps. As it happened with so many professors, he was dispossessed of his Professorship and judged by the new authorities. Dr. Joan Peset was sentenced to death and finally shot in Paterna the 24th of May 1941. That morning he had performed a hernia operation on another prisoner.
