My Backyardnews FroM earthrace conservation around the world

Thank you all for your hard work over the last 12 months. I’ve spent much of the last year travelling, developing plans that will see us back out on the ocean again soon, thanks to our new Sealegs amphibious vessel!

In the meantime, I feel humbled by the incredibly strong core crew of people that are on board with Earthrace Conservation, working every day for no money, growing our chapters and taking action against everything from ocean pollution, illegal fishing and hunting and shark finning, to seal culls, the preservation of endangered species and the continuing captivity of marine mammals for profit.

They are all responsible for keeping the name of Earthrace out there, which in turn is attracting thousands of other amazing volunteers all over the world willing to give up their time and expertise to help too.

2013 will be a brilliant year when we collectively make some seriously good stuff hap-pen. I’m thrilled to have you with us, and am looking forward to working with you all over the next year. Let’s get ready for some action!

Issue 1 l My Backyard

Seal shame The previous year saw the first suc-cessful Earthrace mission carried out, to protest against the Na-mibian seal ‘cull’. In 2012, the team continued efforts to help stop the annual slaughter of 90,000 seal pups and 6,000 bulls around Cape Cross and Wolfe Bay by submitting documentation and video footage about this on-going atrocity, and by meeting personally with the Ombudsman, John Waters, who was officially tasked with inves-tigating the way in which the ‘cull’ is carried out.

The resulting report was a huge disappointment to Earthrace and all the other groups committed to seeing an end to the killing. Although Waters put forward recommendations that kill-ing methods used should be improved upon, he had little else to say likely to change the status quo. To date, none of these recommendations have been acted upon, and we will continue to pressure those who carry out and condone the cull.

Clean up crews The Africa team will be

getting down and dirty on the beaches around the coast, hoping to

work alongside mega-crew, Durban Beach Clean Up, who organise

monthly clean ups. Apparently, our Durban-based crew, Eleanor

and Larry, collect at least a dustbin bag full of plastic every time they

go there already so more hands are always needed!

SHARK NET SCANDAL Spanning South Africa’s KwaZulu Natal coastline are a total of 17 shark nets, each 305 metres in length.

Placed there years ago to protect the long gone whaling industry, the nets now pose a threat not only to sharks – many of which are now endangered – but also to sea turtles, humpback whales, dolphins and other marine life. Earthrace will be actively campaigning to see these nets removed in 2013.

Pirates raping African seas Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU fishing) is destroying life in Africa’s oceans as well as the lives of millions of people depen-dant on the legal fishing industry.

Over 50% of fish are caught illegally in Africa. One industrial vessel catches as many fish as a thousand local fishermen, whilst taking out many other sea creatures that get captured in the driftnets, long lines and trawlers.

These guys don’t care about unsustainable fishing activities or the fact that they’re stealing from one of the world’s most vulnerable countries. Often heavily armed, they force local fishermen away from their own waters with threats of violence. Expect some hard-hitting action from Earthrace as we take on the pirate poachers this year.

Shut it down Ushaka Marine World is the only remaining place keeping captive dolphins for profit in South Africa. Sharks are also on display almost inside one of the restaurants – ap-parently it’s fun to eat whilst watching something that could eat you!

Our team recently worked really hard alongside other groups to try and stop uShaka from holding a massive New Year’s Eve bash only 250 metres from the dolphin tank that risked the health of the dol-phins and sharks.

They’ll be doing everything and more to ensure that never happens again, and with all our teams, will be passionately advocating to see an end to captivity for all marine mammals around the world.

Earthrace reached Argentina in May 2012 to start local campaigns for marine life and our oceans.

After a two-year period working as the Coordinator of Sea Shep-herd Argentina, Fernando Labaronnie, our new Chapter Director, along with other ex-SSCS volunteers, decided to support Pete Bethune and Earthrace.

Killing the Captive Industry There are two remaining aquariums in South America that will be targeted with campaigns to encourage the public not to pay to visit them.

Mundo Marino in Buenos Aires holds 13 dolphins as well as lonely killer whale, Kshamenk, who has been held in his tiny pool, since being ‘rescued’ from a stranding in 1992.

Mar del Plata Aquarium has seven dolphins that spend their days ‘entertaining’ the public and lining the pockets of their owners.

Earthrace Argentina will join our other teams around the world in campaigning against cetaceans in captivity. If we can stop the prof-it, we can stop the shows.

Rocking it! Already, Fernando and his crew have organised beach clean-ups during a kayak competition and had an information stand at a huge rock event when Pennywise, an infamous band, played to more than 4,000 people in Argentina.

GoALS foR 2013 Among our goals for 2013 is to deliver more information to many more people through more rock music events, and to organise more beach clean-ups alongour coastline.

Shocking shark fin record While Argentina banned the removal of shark fins at sea in 2009, it still manages to hold a shocking 5th position in the world ranking for exporting shark fin.

That’s not good and our Argentina crew plan on doing plenty in the next year to get this country off the list of those dealing in shark fin altogether.

Arty argentina We’re very lucky at Earthrace to have many talented people on board, and Fernando is another of them.

Not only a passionate believer in conserving and protecting the oceans, he’s a great photographer and has designed many, many great Earthrace posters using his pictures…Fernando, please may we have more this year?

Issue 1 l My Backyard

2012 proved to be a successful year for the Earthrace Aus-tralia chapter thanks to the team led by Alan Winstanley and Iztel Castillo.

They worked alongside Bob Irwin and Colin Riddell in a campaign that aimed to change indigenous hunting laws in Queensland to protect the region’s sea turtles and dugongs.

After a successful rally in front of the Queensland Parliament House in February, the first stage of the campaign was accomplished af-ter the Queensland government changed the cruelty laws to in-clude indigenous hunting methods of dugongs and turtles.

Thanks to our Aussie team, other Earthrace chapters organised rallies in support too with good crowds turning up outside embas-sies in New Zealand, the UK and the US.

No-one really knows how many dugongs or endangered sea turtles are being slaughtered cruelly each year or how many are left but a 2012 report stated it might be as few as fifty in the region.

Although the Australian Government continue to downplay the issue

and might feel they’ve done enough for now, by still allowing them

to be killed even for ‘ceremonial reasons’ to keep indigenous pop-

ulations appeased, and a lack of enforcement against poachers is

nothing to celebrate.

CULL THREAT To GREAT WHITES A number of politicians called for a cull in late 2012 of Great White Sharks in response to attacks off the Western Australian coast with a potential A$6.85 million allocated towards the plan.

Earthrace joined with many other concerned groups and individual in protesting vehemently against this course of action.

According to The Australian Shark Attack File, in the last 50 years

there have been 55 recorded unprovoked attacks, which averages

at about 1.1 attacks per year.

As one of the petitions stated, “To put things in perspective, on av-erage there are two to three deaths per year from bee stings in Australia”.

We’ll continue fighting tooth and fin against this until we get reassurance

that it won’t be happening!

Plans for 2013 The Earthrace Australia chapter is excited about this year as the team make plans to work vigorously on a campaign that will target proposed coal ports and the damage they do to

the Great Barrier Reef and the marine life that exists there.

The Abbot Point coal port expansion ignores the 2012 United Na-tions Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation report recom-mendations not to develop new ports outside those already existing adjacent to the Reef.

africa

The year started out slowly as is usual north of 60 degrees latitude.

As winter gradually loosened its grip on our weather beaten islands,

activity began to manifest itself again after hibernation.

Realizing how much time needs to be spent raising awareness and

educating “fellow” activists about delicate matters about the Grind

and Faroese island culture can lead even the most hardened astray.

Then again, we are tireless Vikings - and summer was approaching

fast, a time when little and no sleep is needed, bathed in endless

sunlight and bright nights. Bring it on!

Seminar connects activists In June

last year, the Nordic Councils Bio Ethics Committee hosted a two

day seminar about Marine Mammal matters in the North Atlantic.

The topic was how to make environmentalism, whaling and whale

watching co-exist.

The Earthrace Faroe Islands team attended and made a lot of

new connections. Among them was Andy Ottaway from Campaign

Whale and we have since started working on a joint project – all will

be revealed later this year.

Speaking up on TV Faroes Chapter Director, Runi Nielsen, was in a live debate on prime time Faroese TV repre-senting Earthrace on the daily national news. Facing him was long time whaling enthusiast Hans Jacob Hermansen and a somewhat biased TVhost. Needless to say, Rúni gave them hell and came out on top.

Travelling the islands together In the wake of these events, the team continued to travel around the Islands with long-time fellow environmentalists, Leah A. Lemieux and Hans Peter Roth and others – much of this was done in the eve-

nings as with all our volunteers, day time jobs continue – so there was little sleep!

Dolphin Advocate Ric o’Barry sharing his knowledge In July, following in Pete Bethune’s footsteps, renowned dolphin advocate, Ric O’Bar-ry, visited the Faroes as a guest at Vitan (Knowledge) 2012, when he gave a lecture about marine mammals, mercury poisoning and related matters.

Keeping a grip on the grinds A surveywas organised by WSPA and Planet Whale (Faroe Islands Whale Watch) to document marine wildlife in the Faroe Islands during August and September 2012. Its main aim was to understand the distribution of cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) around the islands using

previously tagged animals. Using information from tags is good news

as tagged animals are not allowed to be hunted.

2012 proved to be an interesting year for the ECONZ crew. With protests, awareness events, car accidents and crisis points for some of our rarest marine animals, it certainly proved to be a challenging year but we managed to cover a lot of ground.

Race against time for the Maui dolphins Most of the year was dedicated to raising awareness to the plight of the indigenous Maui’s dolphin. This spe-cies – currently estimated at a total population of only 55 – is only found in a small area of ocean around New Zealand.

every opportunity was taken to educate the public, put pressure on the government and support other organisations in the fight to get these critically endangered mammals greater protection from commercial fishing.

Over 39,000 people and organisations made submissions on the threat Management plan currently being reviewed by the New Zealand government.

‘Let’s face It’ Earthrace Conservation, not just in

New Zealand but every other chapter around the world, entered into and encouraged others to join in with a creative visual petition cam-paign started by American skateboarder, surfer, artist and environ-mental activist Peggy Oki.

‘let’s Face it’ has now gathered almost 6,000 photographs and is still growing! www.lets-face-it-dolphins.com

World Wide Anti-whaling Day! We’re very grateful to the medical and scientific healthcare community for putting earthrace operations director, scotty Bowman, back to-gether after a serious car crash.

But we hate the so-called ‘scientific whaling’ that the Japanese per-petuate each year in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.

So no surprises that Scotty didn’t let his accident and several remedial operations get in the way of supporting World Wide Anti-whaling Day!

fINISH THE fINNING Toward the end of the year, Earthrace officially joined the New Zealand Shark Alli-ance which has been formed with the intent of banning shark finning in New Zealand waters.

Over 1/3 of the world has banned shark finning, New Zealand hasn’t!

focus in 2013 Moving into 2013, dolphins,

Devastation in the Baltic ocean Our very few coral reefs are being trawled on a daily basis by foreign fishing fleets, leaving total devastation behind them. There are pro-tected zones and no one is allowed to fish there, but there is barely anyone actually protecting and patrolling them. That is one of the reasons why we decided to launch a chapter in the far north.

Once, several years ago we had a thriving number of Atlantic blue fin tuna along the coast. Due to the number of big blue fins, in 1939 fishermen arrived from all over the world to join one of the biggest tuna fishing games in the world. It didn’t take long until all of the blue fin tuna was completely gone.

We are still facing these very problems today. The thriving fish are being fished out. The Baltic ocean has turned into a swamp due to pollution.

Currently there are few organizations in Sweden that are confident they can make a real impact on defending the oceans surrounding us.

Earthrace is one that does believe we can make a difference, another is Djurens Rätt Malmo, with which we are now working against shark finning.

Since we began there have already been ten articles in the Swed-ish newspapers about the shark finning industry. We’ll soon be an-nouncing an easy way for everyone in Sweden to participate and take action, so keep your eyes on our facebook page!

Anti-captivity actions There are elev-en captive dolphins at Kolmarden Djurpark and Zoo in Sweden, where they invite you to ‘enjoy a world-class dolphin show or expe-rience a breathtaking ride on the Dolphin Express roller coaster”.

Working with our chapters and groups around the world, Kolmarden

can expect a roller coaster ride this year courtesy of our anti-captiv-ity campaigning.

Widening our borders In addition to our work in Sweden, we’re gradually working our way around Scan-dinavia into Denmark and Norway.

The Faroe Islands, where the pilot whale Grinds take place, is un-der the sovereignty of Denmark of course – not that Denmark does anything to try and stop it happening – while Norway continues its whaling traditions.

20 vessels registered for last year’s four month whaling season in Norway, which starts in May each year. There was a total number of 1,286 minke whales allowed to be harpooned.

Join in, join us Our Swedish chapter is actively looking for hard working and passionate volunteers to help us with everything from reporting on restaurants serving shark fin soup, up-dating our facebook page and translating. So please get in touch if you’re interested.

We protested for dugongs and sea turtles, then outside the NamibianEmbassy as we do each year and will continue to do so every year that the seals are slaughtered. Our numbers outside the Embassy more thandoubled this year which was great to see.

We also protested outside the Canadian embassy against their seal hunt, and outside both the American and Russian Embassies against the potential import into the US of 18 wild caught Beluga whales destined for the Georgia Aquarium and other marine entertainment theme parks.

Dolphin Day The first of two Japan Dolphin Day pro-tests against the dolphin drives in Taiji was at the start of the season in August and we were lucky enough to help organise this one alongside activists from many different groups. Shows what can be achieved by working together.

In all, 96 protests happened around the world on the same day!

As well as all of that, we managed to get out and talk to loads of young people, send out 10,000 anti-captivity posters to UK schools, and collect lots of visual petitions for Peggy Oki’s Let’s Face It campaign to protect the New Zealand Maui’s dolphins and more for the Free the Atlanta 11 visual petition against the Beluga import.

SAY No To THE DoLPHIN SHoW! 2012 saw the release of ‘ The Dolphin Song’ by Earthrace UK Chapter Director Lucy Byrne’s 4 year old daughter Leela B in collaboration with ‘We am Legend’.

The song is helping us take the anti captivity message to a younger audience. http://youtu.be/kNtNPBnwEjs

Our ‘anti captivity death sticks’, graphically illustrating all the cetaceans that have died in captivity, have also proved to be a valuable tool in our campaigning.

All 5,500 sticks were taken to Camber Sands beach to be photographed, and to Whalefest in Brighton in October where they drew in large num-bers of people and were talked about all weekend - even the legendary Ingrid Visser mentioned them in her presentation!

Save the Whales Reloaded We joined the exciting new ‘Save the Whales Reloaded’ campaign launched at Whale-fest, met some amazing people, saw old friends and had brilliant feed-back from members of the public. Brighton rocks!

The Team 2012 has been a great year for us. The core team of Lucy Byrne, Joyce Cheung, Rob Barrett, Dan Green, Rob McCafferty, Bev Bailey and Paul Ransley have all worked really hard, so thank you Earthrace UK peeps and all who have supported us in 2012 - we look forward to a truly awesome 2013.

Earthrace screened an exclusive preview in LA of the pilot for the TV series that will follow Pete and crew on future missions. IIt created a huge impact on everyone who saw it. We can’t tell you much more here, but let’s just say, we should ‘seal’ the deal soon!

Protest at Sea World San Diego February saw the first of the bi-monthly protests that are always supported by Earthrace outside Sea World San Diego. Woe betide anyone trying to ignore our crew!

Namibia Protest, San Diego Earthra-ce USA supported our global call to action against the Namibian seal slaughter with a protest at La Jolla beach, an area that has had its own fair share of seal issues too so it was more than appropriate!

Combined efforts at the fundrais-er for Save the Malibu Lagoon

USA co-director, Gina Bryant, spoke at a fundraiser for Save Malibu La-goon. A half-dozen Earthrace vol-unteers were central to making the event a monumental success.

Malibu celebrities such as Anthony Kiedes of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers (left, with Gina Bryant) co-sponsored,

and the band signed a guitar they donated for the silent auction. Sad-ly, despite all this, the bulldozing of the Lagoon began in May 2012.

Maui’s dolphin ‘Let’s face It’ visual petition

Beginning in March and still going, ECO Ju-niors’ director, Ally Banks, started collecting vi-sual petitions to add to Peggy Oki’s Let’s Face It collection (now over 5,500 strong).

Monster shame on Martha’s Vine-yard! In July, a group of Earthrace volunteers from the US and Europe went to protest against the annual Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournament - the same team that went to the Faroe Islands in 2011. They created quite a stir as they distributed shark conservation information to the sport-fishing community. A brave mission by Sandi Sullivan, Maare Liiv and Donald U. Newe.

Eco goes to Hollywood In November, Pete joined L.A. and San Diego members and some other familiar faces on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame to protest the dolphin slaugh-ters of Taiji, Japan.

A Conflicted Relationship Ally Banks represented Earthrace at the 13th Annual American Cetacean Soci-ety Conference in San Diego, where there were was an interesting presentation on Whales and Humans: A Conflicted Relationship. You can say that again!

orca Nakai hurt at Seaworld In September, horrific injuries to cap-tive orca, Nakai, were seen for the first time thanks to pictures taken by orca expert, Dr Ingrid Visser. It didn’t take long for protestors, including our Earthrace crew, to get back out there and tell Sea World they weren’t happy.

From way back during his world record journey, Pete has always seen young people as being crucial to saving the world’s oceans.

Our Junior Activists come from all over the globe from Spain to Singapore and South Africa and from New Zealand to the Netherlands. Every year, since the Juniors was launched in 2010, we reach more and more young people with messages about ocean conservation and protection.

The Juniors page on facebook is the place where young people can share their thoughts as well as their photos and art. It’s where Ally Banks and Na-talie Borghardt, who look after the Juniors, keep ev-eryone up to date with what Pete, Earthrace and all the inspirational young people we know get up to.

This year, we can reveal our brand new logo for the Junior Activists…remind you of anything? A world re-cord breaking, anti-whaling green machine perhaps?

save the whales: reloaded

Earthrace, with over 75 other leading animal protection and environmental groups and busi-nesses have committed to this campaign.

The new global alliance was announced follow-ing the World Whale Conference in 2012 at the same hotel in Brighton, UK where the original moratorium on whaling was signed in 1982.

The Alliance has identified three key areas that it will work on initially:

The Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary

New Zealand’s Coastal Waters – save the Maui’s and Hector’s dolphins

Loro Parque, Tenerife – where orca Morgan is held

www.savethewhalesreloaded.org

the new Zealand shark alliance

The NZSA is an umbrella group of NGOs unified in a campaign to prohibit shark finning in NZ waters.

The alliance, which includes Earthrace, is fight-ing to bring New Zealand shark legislation in line with other countries.

Over one third of countries around the world have banned shark finning. New Zealand is one of the few countries that condone this barbaric practice, and remains one of the top twenty ex-porters of shark fin to Hong Kong. Globally, there is real concern that shark finning is contributing to a serious population decline of sharks.

rowing 4 reefs

In 2014, 27 year old Brit, Daryl Farmer, plans to row, single-handed, across the Pacific to raise awareness of ocean issues including threats to sharks, coral reefs and from pollution. He is also raising awareness of the early signs of

kidney cancer.

Pete says, “I know in Earthrace we managed 23,497 nautical miles in 60 days 23 hours 49 minutes to take the world record for circumnavi-gating the globe in a powerboat.

Believe me, Earthrace was not a comfortable boat to be in, stripped down for speed as she was. At least our remarkable engines did most of the work and I certainly wasn’t on my own.

Darryl is rowing, single-handed, across the Pa-cific Ocean, between California and Hawaii – a distance of 2,400 nautical miles. I rowed 24 miles the other day and was totally bushed.

It took a fraction of the time Daryl expects to be at sea – anywhere up to 90 days apparently. I can’t imagine how unpleasant rowing that far and being on the ocean alone for that long will be like.

By taking on this challenge, I reckon he’s got 10 times the courage I have. Either that, or he’s nuts.”

Everyone in Earthrace Conservation supports him wholeheartedly and we’ll be following him every step of the way.

Everyone who works for Earthrace Con-servation is a volunteer. No-one receives a salary, we don’t have an expensive of-fice to run and we certainly don’t travel first class or stay in swanky hotels. We can promise you that all donations go di-rectly towards enabling us to continue with our missions and cam-paigns to preserve and protect oceans and marine life around the world.

Become a volunteer Why anyone would charge people to volunteer their time, heaven knows. If you’d like to work with us, it’s easy – and free. Just fill in the form on our website and we’ll introduce you to your nearest Chapter (www.earthraceconservation.org/volunteer-form). Welcome on board!

Please consider a donationWe plan on having a new ‘Earthrace’ at some stage in the future, and you can help us build it. With our own ships, we can get right into the middle of the action, wherever it is. In the meantime, we need donations so that we can take our new Sealegs vessel and her crew wherever she is needed.

Crucially, we need the right kind of equipment to make sure our mis-sions succeed and to protect our teams. Clothing, hi def and cam-eras for stills and film so that we can document missions as they happen, and communications tools so that our teams can share what they’re doing with each other, and with you.

We want to reach more young people through our education plans and through our Junior Activists Club. Producing educational re-sources that are relevant to many different age groups and pro-fessional enough to be used extensively by educators around the world is not cheap.

There are always conferences, rallies and other events happening around the world where we can make a difference by speaking out. Last year, our core crew paid out of their own pockets to get to some of the really important ones, and to produce flyers and post-ers to take with them, but we’d like to be able to fund more people to do more this year. Can you help?

you can donate direct to us through paypal (you don’t need an account): [email protected]

If you would like to donate by cheque, please make it payable to Earthrace Charitable Trust and send it to Earthrace Conservation, 394 Wairere Road, RD2, Henderson, 0782, New Zealand.
